that is beautiful

[–]meowbitchmeow 36 points37 points ago

I totally agree, this is amazing.

[–]Nosferatu616 23 points24 points ago

And not the slightest bit WTF.

[–]Faniz 12 points13 points ago

It could even be on /r/aww. I think cicadas are cute though.

[–]darkkittykatt 7 points8 points ago

no it's nature, it is beautiful because it is now a new bug, and probably very happy to have wings.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

I like this thread, you guys are very correct on how stunningly beautiful this is. Also, when I was a kid I would always collect the left-over "shells" of the cicadas.

[–]thats_not_wtf 0 points1 point ago

Thank you for saying that so I don't have to.

[–]Lucifers_Friend 1 point2 points ago

I don't get why people are weirded out by this. It's super cool!

[–][deleted] 31 points32 points ago

It's probably not gross to anyone who was a kid in a place where they swarm. The 17 year cicadas came when I was like 8 or 9, and we used to throw handfuls of them at each other the playground at recess. They blanketed the ground for days or weeks. I remember my bike wheels making a constant crunching noise when I rode down the sidewalk. You can't really be grossed by something that ubiquitous, I think.

[–]PricklyPricklyPear 3 points4 points ago

Yeah I came here to say this. Where I'm from, you couldn't leave the house sometimes if a few cicadas grossed you out. They are fuckin loud, tho...

[–]BenSe7en 3 points4 points ago

I live in Houston Texas. I think the cicadas are the only redeeming part of the disgustingly hot and humid summers. I can sit out on the patio and listen to them sing for hours.

[–]KillaPeas 4 points5 points ago

that may not be gross to you, But I feel like I need a shower.

[–]rmphys 1 point2 points ago

I was camping that year (one of many). We fried them up and ate them, not too bad IIRC. ProTips: Take off the legs, they stick on the way down. Also, more crunch->wings on, less crunch->wings off.

[–]jondissed 1 point2 points ago

Love these guys. They come out every summer in Chicago, even non-"brood" years. Some people freak out because they're big, noisy, and tend to bumble around stupidly when they fly into your kitchen. I like them for precisely these reasons.

[–]shaker28 3 points4 points ago

Well, where I'm from insects have the common decency to either stay the same or become butterflies.

[–]MrsMadHiggs 1 point2 points ago

Actually that is the "butterfly" phase of the cicada. They live underground in the larvae state for up to 19 years until adequate conditions are reached for them to surface and reproduce. Beautiful animals, just to think that cicada might be older than most redditors should inspire some respect.

[–]4vradrmr 0 points1 point ago

How old are you now? Is it time for their return yet?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I'm old enough for them to have returned, but my family moved to a Cicada-free zone before they did.

[–]harmedgreen 0 points1 point ago

Actually I got to see the 17 year swarm thing. Still not gross. Still really really cool :D

[–]Self_Hating_Liberal 0 points1 point ago

1997?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Northern VA in 1985 or so.

[–]a3wagner 37 points38 points ago

And that's how we get Shedinja.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

you need at least one pokeball.

[–]JanitorMaster 6 points7 points ago

I find this rather interesting.

[–]widdle 0 points1 point ago

I would have said fascinating, but close enough. :)

[–]multiplesifl 17 points18 points ago

Those wings are a very pretty color.

[–]MFchimichanga 11 points12 points ago

Now imagine that coming out of your ass.

[–]Tarheb 25 points26 points ago

No.

[–]neotheism 3 points4 points ago

what a cute baby..

[–]4vradrmr 3 points4 points ago

I thought I might let you know that you posted in the wrong subreddit. Nature is NEVER wtf. Humans are WTF. Not only have we removed ourselves from the natural selection process but we have apparently made it our mission as a species to fuck up the rest of the intricate web that is nature.

[–]darkwavechick 1 point2 points ago

That upvote was for you and so is this; <3

[–]4vradrmr 0 points1 point ago

:0)

[–]megabetty 6 points7 points ago

Is that a cicada?

[–]nameandnumber 0 points1 point ago

I think so.

[–]PricklyPricklyPear 2 points3 points ago

I know so.

[–]maquila 0 points1 point ago

If you scroll down to "Life Cycle" the gif above is there.

[–]TheAccountWithNoName 2 points3 points ago

The miracle of birth..?

[–]kirbyfood 2 points3 points ago

anyone else just start hearing the cicada sound in your head?

[–]MysteryLie 2 points3 points ago

I think it's cool, doesn't bug me at all.

[–]barden1069 0 points1 point ago

Karma4puns

[–]agent0fch4os 2 points3 points ago

What the hell is the point of shedding your body just for a pair of wings? Why cant it just grow the damn wings without having to shed its body? What does it think it is, A transformer? Whats it gonna do next change into a yellow camaro?

[–]koala_overlord14 2 points3 points ago

don't let it absorb android 17

[–]ChatGarou 4 points5 points ago

We have cicadas all over the place here in East Texas. When I was a kid I'd find them on the ground about to molt and put them in an aquarium so I could watch it. Takes about an hour for them to get out and their carapice to harden enough for them to fly again.

[–]Ferniff 1 point2 points ago

And this is what they sound like. The sound of summer

[–]Nosferatudamus 1 point2 points ago

I'm shedding the skin off my horror boner just like that!

[–]desenagrator 1 point2 points ago

Shouldn't have left the Redbull out.

[–]BubbleWrapZen 1 point2 points ago

I immediately heard "Vicarious" by Tool after viewing this.

[–]drlemonberry 0 points1 point ago

I like Tool. Have an upvote!

[–]immapizza 1 point2 points ago

It's face makes me think of jabba the hut, I'm not sure why.....

[–]Vikaroo 1 point2 points ago

As a southerner, all this does is make me think of their summer music. I live too far north to hear them in the summertime, and I miss it.

[–]lokcyn 1 point2 points ago

When I hear someone speak of rain on a tin roof, I immediately think of cicadas and their music... I would surely miss their "summer music."

[–]Vikaroo 1 point2 points ago

It took me 4 years to figure out what was missing up here. 4 summers wondering what exactly kept my brain skipping over and over on some unnoticed scratch in my summer record. Not the thick, sweltering heat or the snow cones they do so well out there, not even the sweet tea or watermelon. I was watching some random youtube video, some person outdoors in a southern summer and I could pick out that constant thrumming and chirping in the background. Now I miss it properly, instead of just wondering what was missing.

[–]lokcyn 0 points1 point ago

I've read that up north, cicadas only molt every 17 years... in Texas, they molt EVERY year and we are lucky to see and hear more often.

[–]Vikaroo 1 point2 points ago

Depending on the Cicada it's a 13 or a 17 year life cycle. If I understand what I've read about cicada's correctly then the reason you see them more or less frequently is just which brood (or generation) you are seeing. So you have a brood emerge every year, but they are all still 13-17 years old and so it appears that they have only a 1 year life cycle when they in fact have a 13-17 year life cycle.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicada

Unless there are some 1-year Cicada's that I've never heard of, if so please feel free to correct me.

[–]lokcyn 0 points1 point ago

I believe they all have either a 13 or 17 year life cycle. I'm just glad to hear and see them in the same abundance every year where I live (Texas). I thought that all adults were of generally equal size but several years ago there was a brood with some that emerged not much larger than a penny.

Thanks for the reply. I'll do a little more research on them.

[–]kissy_re 1 point2 points ago

In elementary school, I used to find their old casings all over the trees and on the ground and proceed to stick them to my clothing. I would chase all the boys around during recess with them stuck to my clothing and they would be little pussies and tell the teacher.

[–]Stuckinaloop 0 points1 point ago

Those are good bait.

[–]Look_at_that_Fetus 0 points1 point ago

Wow, that's kind of beautiful in all honesty.

[–]JessHWV 0 points1 point ago

I used to find their little exoskeletons on trees and I would put them on my hands like finger puppets.

[–]joeyurso 0 points1 point ago

Was it a butterfly, Clarice?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Your username makes me uncomfortable.

[–]PureMDC 0 points1 point ago

It's a cicada bug. When I was younger I was climbing a tree when I all at once realized there was one in my face. I panicked and let go of the tree, bad idea, I fell to the ground maybe 15 feet into my mothers garden which she yelled at me for ruining. I went back to look at it after and it was the shell left behind. I felt like a fool, a very sore fool.

[–]SpoutsLazyOpinions 0 points1 point ago

yay - relatively few insectophobe comments

[–]Doktor_Rob 0 points1 point ago

Cicadas are quite interesting in that they use Prime Numbers to their advantage. They hatch out in prime numbered cycles of 3, 5, 13 and 17 years. This puts their predators at a dissadvantage because they cannot rely on a hatching each spring or each other spring or even each fourth spring. This means that cicadas are unlikely to have a natural predator.... All because of MATH.

Except for the cicada killers... I'm too drunk to post a link tonight but will post a video tomorrow of one dragging a cicada from ground to up a tree!

[–]nickyd123 0 points1 point ago

[–]mspinkyy 0 points1 point ago

As soon as it started moving I noped out of there. Jesus Christ. Glad to live in England.

[–]lokcyn 0 points1 point ago

As a child, we'd pick up cicadas and feel the magical flutter of their wings in our closed hands... I was 30+ and working a night shift before being blessed with the opportunity to see one molting... that night, I held my camera for about an hour to get in-progress pics of the event... from the inverted bat look to the super fresh wings being uncurled... I have photographed their lost wings using the macro setting and have sold works of art of merely the veiny wings... I was recently lucky enough to video a cicada killer dragging a cicada from ground up a tree... what a sight that was!... the cicadas in asia are much more colorful and I hope to visit during mating season to see them there some day.

[–]abom420 0 points1 point ago

My god, This is spiders all over.

I couldn't be in a room a spider was till I realized one day in my garage they eat mosquitos, now I love the fuckers and leave their webs up.

After 3 summers ago, these cicadas replaced spiders on my list.

but as you said this is so damn beatiful they are now off. I wish I could just evolve into flying one day, that would be the shit.

Are cicadas real life pokemon? (image of that dude making shocked face)

[–]NDORHKS 0 points1 point ago

what? caterpie is evolving!

[–]barden1069 0 points1 point ago

I've watched a cicada do that IRL (albeit very slowly lol). It's incredibly cool.

[–]brianpepinski 0 points1 point ago

I kill so many cicadas in the summer, I fucking hate those things

[–]hamguin47 0 points1 point ago

I hate cicadas luckily for me I rarely ever see them being that they stay in the trees but I can definitely hear them

[–]SuperMalley96 0 points1 point ago

It looks 3D...

[–]Lecrazycatlady 0 points1 point ago

It saddens me that nature is scary to people.

[–]ballsack66 0 points1 point ago

I watched this process in person as a child and it was fucking awesome.

[–]rieldealIV 0 points1 point ago

That was awesome.

[–]pomegranati 0 points1 point ago

If you've ever seen one do it in real life, it's pretty cool. I saw one in boy scout camp. I watched it. Its wings came out soft and vibrantly colored like that one. It was neat to hold it on my finger, and watched as the wings extend, harden, and changed color.

[–]tongue__punch 0 points1 point ago

This is what my nightmares are made of.

[–]ohsnapitsrags 0 points1 point ago

WHOA. NSFL TAG PLEASE. AND DON'T BITCH ABOUT MY CAPSLOCK. I'M SCREAMING AT YOU.

[–]darkwavechick 1 point2 points ago

Oh quit being a whiny ninny.....

[–]Scarlet- 0 points1 point ago

That's the best time to eat them by the way. When they're soft skinned and a little moist.

[–]merc908 0 points1 point ago

that is cool

[–]Corrugo 0 points1 point ago

So I'm the only one who hears a tiny voice saying 'Freedom!'

[–]Little-Nicky-lover -1 points0 points ago

I don't want to click it. What is it?

[–]iamthedisk4 7 points8 points ago

A cicada transitioning into adulthood.

[–]Little-Nicky-lover -3 points-2 points ago

Yuck.

[–]iamthedisk4 9 points10 points ago

I'm a minority in that I love insects, so I find this pretty awesome.

[–]quedfoot 0 points1 point ago

it' pretty cool actually

[–]saywee123 -1 points0 points ago

I would do this if I could. No lie.

[–]heiliger82 -1 points0 points ago

Very cool. Now kill it with fire.

[–]SolidBlake -1 points0 points ago*

Interesting? Sure.

Beautiful? It's a god damn cicada. Even so, If I broke through my skin with a newly-grown pair of membrane-thin wings and left a dried carcass behind, it would not be beautiful.

[–]ExcessiveRetardation -1 points0 points ago

Kill it with fire. Or a shoe
