I prefer to ask for proof that I'm not god and then proceed to declare that I'm god.

"But you can't be god! You don't do good deeds and stuff" "FUCK YOU, I MADE THIS PLANET I'LL DO WHATEVER THE HELL I WANT"

Declaring yourself as "God" proves nothing because being "God" would result in being in a state of infinite, omnisciency, omnipotence, etc. The problem here is that a human cannot attain this level of grandure because a human is a flawed finite being.

Ahem...you mean like Jesus?

As god, you can refute any claim basically. It is actually kinda fun.

Well it's kind of pointless, that's my point.

Well, in one of my infinite states I happen to be just sitting at my desk typing this comment. Go figure.

I would call myself the god of apathy, but I probably wouldn't have responded at all.

Prove I can't fly? I would be afraid someone would throw me off a roof.

[–]DiscordianStooge 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That would just prove you chose not to fly in that moment, not that you don't have the ability to fly. Of course, you'd be dead or seriously injured, but you could still win the argument.

This plan sounds fool-proof. I'll choose not to fly when I'm tossed off the bridge. That way I both win and don't have to worry about arguing with them anymore.

The burden of proof isn't on us. End thread. Checkmate life!

[–]ncjenkin 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Logically and empirically, it isn't on us. But theists force it upon us. It's one of the pains of arguing the point of atheism; you don't prove a negative, you disprove a positive. That is to say, we aren't required to give evidence that there is no god, but they are required to give evidence that there is a god - which we would then argue against with counter examples.

Theists just cannot seem to wrap their heads around this.

You prove the position you want to convince the other person of.

If I happen to believe in a god, then I've presumably already satisfied myself of its existence. If I want to convince you that you should believe then the onus on me is to prove it to you. You don't need to justify your belief to me.

But the flipside is I don't need to justify my belief to you. If it matters to you that my god doesn't exist then the onus is on you.

There's nothing like waking up in the morning from the sound of your grandma pissing in a metal bucket.

I think the thing here is that they don't believe that they 'came up with' Christianity. Many of them think that we're all born agreeing with them and then move away from god later in life. So as far as they're concerned, we're the ones who came up with the funny idea.

[–]Legault 0 points1 point ago

Burden of proof arguments are weak. We all wake up in the morning and go to work/school, atheists and theists alike; we all believe our lives have some value. Religious folk have a clear, if childish, metaphysical basis for what they do. What about us atheists?

[–]Thaelros 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Some of those "childish, metaphysical" based doctrines are the foundations for many massively accepted ethical truths in both past and modern society.

[–]Legault 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No doubt. Call me crazy, but I believe that "God is the reason for everything I do" is a childish way to ground your worldview. Clear and consistent, but childish.

I like Ricky Gervais as much as the next guy, but this is a point that Sam Harris (or insert any atheist, ever) has pointed out no less than ten times.

What really grinds my gears is when people think that the evidence of the universe indicates that there is a god, and so they refuse to accept that the burden of proof is on them. Since they think the evidence is on their side, they question me as to why I am ignoring the evidence.

Sadly there is a way of proving it, which is throwing him out from top of a building. I really wish I can do this to the fundis from every religion, and pitch one liner from a cheap B rated movie like, "Who's gonna save you now?" But never the less, I understand this method is the other side of extreme as well, and it didn't work out during the cold war era... so... put down your pitchforks and torches please.

[–]Vaulker 0 points1 point ago

I think Ricky Gervais is great, but I find him one of the most fucking obnoxious of the well-known atheists.

His heart is in the right place but, whether or not he thinks his thoughts and conclusions are original, they aren't. And there are other people who have said what he says far better, with far greater eloquence, dignity and character.

He just seems a bit boorish and heavy-handed when it comes to atheism. And there are cleverer people, people whose lives are spent on the subject, to whom we should be paying this attention.

[–]milkentofu 0 points1 point ago

I've said it before, I'll say it again... Ricky Gervais is my favorite atheist.

I love Ricky Gervais, but despise the image quote trend on this subreddit. Downvote.
