Stanley turned out to be sort of a loose cannon.

The show lost its edge a while ago. Characters are doing stuff they normally wouldn't do and everything in general no longer seems as realistic as it used to be.

[–]ins4n1ty 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be honest, the past few episodes have been just about edgier than anything that shows done. It's more than likely an attempt to breathe some life into the show since it's become very stale in terms of humor and storyline. But I have to admit, there's been some pretty funny points lately. I'm not sure about characters doing things they "wouldn't do" as much as the character egos just being a bit more inflated, but I have to say the edgier side is pretty funny.

[–]Urbano35 0 points1 point ago

I think the new stunts that the cast keeps pulling are pathetic attempts at reviving the now deflated humor that made the show what it was. Stanley dismissing others by doing crossword puzzles is no longer funny, so they had to make him eat a pizza. Of course, the benefits of this are my only my opinion, but if you ask me, they're beating a dead horse that only die-hard fans can look past.

[–]ins4n1ty 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can definitely agree to a point - it feels like they've been beating a dead horse for at least 3 seasons now, and I wouldn't say much hope is left for the show's longevity.

This is a symptom of the majority of tv shows today, I think. Keeping a show alive is extremely difficult - and in Office's case, keeping a show going for several seasons like this means that the characters have to become more dynamic, and change throughout the show.

So, I don't look past the obvious nature of this show now - I don't watch it weekly anymore or anything like that for that reason, but I will watch the occasional new episode to see what they're doing with the show.

[–]Urbano35 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. The renovations don't really make it bad - it just pales in comparison to its past self. This is why many consider Seinfeld's finale to be a smart move because they could've gone on for at least three more seasons. Once you run out of ideas, you gotta resort to taking the show apart and they saw that coming.

[–]ins4n1ty 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Totally agree there. If you really get into the nature of a certain show, you can spot right away when it's starting to become diluted, and I think Office is honestly one of the best examples of this. It's a show that gained a huge following, got itself a bunch of seasons, and yet material-wise, didn't have that many places left to go.

Part of me wishes they planned something of an ender, like the British Office had, just something where the show would finally be put to rest. Because I think the British Office executed that idea with a lot of grace, and never once did it feel as though it hit a lull.

[–]Urbano35 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think lack of money helped keep the British version at bay because it's never made much commercial success or popularity during its running time. American version, on the other hand, was loved by everyone. More viewers means more money and it can be tragically difficult for execs to look at so much cash and still wanna end the source of it.

[–]c_hand 30 points31 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's... a comedy show.

[–]Urbano35 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, just because it's a comedy show, characters can have no limits? You gotta understand that creative brilliance is found within certain frames that artists must work within. Without boundaries, there's no establishment. The Office used to have such a discipline where out-of-character behavior was rare enough to be really entertaining and acceptable when it occurred. Now, it happens so often that you can't even draw much of a connection between who the characters are and what they're doing.

You say "comedy show" as if it's all part of the act, but there's quite a lot that goes on beneath it all. Seinfeld could've gone on for another five seasons if they wanted to, but they called it quits because they knew they reached that same limit The Office hit around season three.

[–]Supercluster 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was never all that realistic.

[–]Urbano35 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I disagree. While the show wasn't obviously a perfect portrayal of real-life occurrences, the creators made an effort to make The Office relate-able, but slightly exaggerated (hence the label "mockumentary"). The only reason you can feel the awkwardness from the situations in the show is because everything's been set up so it's as if every scene could be something that would actually happen. The only real exception to this is Steve Carell's character (which makes sense since many of us don't picture our bosses as normal people). Otherwise, the characters, cameras, sound, and sets are all very definite attempts at realism.

[–]StratJax 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

False. If Jim did this it would be out of character. However since it was Stanley it is definitely in character for him.

[–]dboti 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. Stanley cheated on his wife. He definitely always had the possibility to have a wild side out of the office.

[–]Urbano35 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He "cheated on his wife" during the show's decline; an obvious attempt at keeping things interesting.

[–]Kurise 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well I think it kinda gives the show life. Makes the characters seem more real, as they change over the series.

That's just my opinion though. I absolutely love Andrew Bernard as the office manager.

[–]tcpip4lyfe 2 points3 points ago

I think it's kind of settled down again. I like Andy as the new boss and I fucking love Robert California. Stanly is really the only one they kind of did a reboot on.

[–]klutch2 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, Robert California is gone by the end of the season. Show producers said it was great having him on board for just one season.

[–]steppinonthabeach 0 points1 point ago

how is a documentary crew following them around all the time realistic? especially to their homes like the episode with michael's dinner party. look elsewhere for realism, look to the office for awkward laughs

[–]Urbano35 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're missing the point. Realism doesn't require that much perfection. The sole reason awkward humor can be found in this show is because the creators did a good job at making things seem relateable. Even normal documentary directors make an effort to hide the presence of camera crew to allow audiences to immerse themselves. If you want examples of realism, pay attention to character reactions, camera angles, props, etc (Jim's character has an authentic business card with an e-mail registered to dundermifflin.com).

The latter remains strong throughout the seasons from what I can tell, but character behavior sort of goes to shit if you ask me.

[–]C0mmun1ty 0 points1 point ago

Fine, I'll be the nice guy... It's from last nights episode of The Office. The guy pictured is Stanley Hudson, a salesman at Dunder Mifflin-Sabre, and they're at their new "Sabre Store" for the grand opening. It's the company trying to become hip and cool like Apple is....

The triangular pouch on his chest is a carrying case for Sabres tablet that's called "The Pyramid". It's like an iPad, except it's triangular... Yeah... There's a picture of it here... They have a phone now too, also triangular. I believe it was called the "Arrowhead".
