Considering his job is "be most likely to get shot" there was no chance in hell he was doing the officers job as well. So instead he kicked the door to remind the lazy slackers that he might die today to keep them safe so they better wake the fuck up. I think that is also possible.

if you look at the door, it is most likely a "push" door, there are no handles on it. must have been stuck or locked. the door next to him (the "pull" door, with appropriate handle) is being blocked by the cop looking dude
