Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

From the wiki linked below :/

Lichtenberg figures may also appear on the skin of lightning strike victims. These are reddish, fernlike patterns that may persist for hours or days.

[–]ced1106 86 points87 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

More wiki:

Lichtenberg figures appearing on people are sometimes called lightning flowers, and they are thought to be caused by the rupture of small capillaries under the skin due to the passage of the lightning current or the shock wave from the lightning discharge as it flashes over the skin.

Ouch.

[–]Xen0nex 51 points52 points ago

Ah ok that makes sense. My first impulse is it was tracing out the nerves, what with the electrical conductivity and all.

[–]stellarfury 72 points73 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When you're talking potential upwards of 1,000,000 V, the difference in conductivity between nerves and any other body tissue is pretty negligible.

Damn, only temporary?

Now all he'll have to show for his encounter with lightning is reduced motor function in his left arm. That's not nearly as attractive as a wicked tattoo...

[–]Reil 229 points230 points ago

It occurs to me that having someone trace over an area that was just struck by lightning might be a bit painful, and by extension, unwise.

"For over a thousand years, Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed the honor of a triumph - a tumultuous parade. In the procession came trumpeters and musicians and strange animals from the conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conqueror rode in a triumphal chariot, the dazed prisoners walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children, robed in white, stood with him in the chariot, or rode the trace horses. A slave stood behind the conqueror, holding a golden crown, and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting." -- Gen. George S. Patton

[–]MeloJelo 258 points259 points ago

I think most people who are struck by lightning end up with permanent damage to their internal organs, which usually leaves them with a shortened life span and a lot of medical bills and lost time for treatment of chronic issues. That's probably the tragic part . . .

[–]Golden-Calf 85 points86 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The sad thing is that a lot of people get chronic pain that can't really be pinpointed or treated. Doctors still aren't sure exactly why some people are in pain years later, even though technically their bodies are in perfect condition and you wouldn't be able to tell the person had been struck by lightning.

[–]cyberslick188 30 points31 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are a lot of other more common ailments that can do that as well.

Shingles for example can lead to permanent nerve damage that is borderline untreatable in many cases, unless you want a life long pain killer addiction.

I can't even imagine what it would be like to have had the pain I experienced during shingles last a lifetime.

[–]lurkersaurus 21 points22 points ago

[–]Cheese_Bits 42 points43 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually its common (admittedly among people who already have been struck) for victims to be struck multiple times through their lives, the record is seven I believe. It's assumed that they have less resistance in their body as measured by a multimeter, but that's just speculation.

Edit: Not my speculation, Shatner said it!

I read the story on this guy and he got lucky. It grazed him.

[–]flinteastwood 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Isn't the nature of a lightning strike, and electricity in general, that it enters the body only when it has a way to exit? Therefore, it can't really "graze" him? Can we get a scientist in on this?

[–]deathpunch5150 52 points53 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Grazed, in this case, sounds like it hit the shoulder and exited the forearm, by the look of the scarring. That, versus hitting the top of your head, through the brain/heart/vital organs, to your feet. That would be more of "Boom, headshot" status.

[–]Moofyman 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It all depends where it strikes him and where his body is grounded I suppose. In his account he says:

"I went outside to save my pumpkins. (I guess it was May 21.) After that, I was going back inside. I just know it struck in our neighbor’s backyard, and it was bright and loud. I didn’t feel anything. I just came back inside like nothing was wrong. Umm…my arm was sore. But I didn’t … I don’t think I saw any marks until 30, 45 … [it was] maybe an hour before I saw the marks. Didn’t seek medical help. There’s not too much else to it. I just watched it to make sure that it was alright. I don’t know. I just went about my normal life until [Daphne] got back here and started freaking out."

Maybe he was only hit by an off shoot of the main bolt because the scar is only on his arm.

[–]stellarfury 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Lightning has a high enough potential (voltage) that it "breaks down" the insulating barrier of air, allowing conduction through the gas. So, really, it could potentially enter and exit the body at any interface between skin and air.

I've spent time searching to no avail for a clip from a reality show of two men who were struck by lightning.

It was one of those programs where a camera crew follows some sort of emergency crew around, I don't remember which one.

Two guys were hunting in Big Bear, Ca when they got caught in a thunderstorm. They took refuge under a tree, and both were hit. Both were airlifted away, but both ended up sitting up in the hospital, talking, and with relatively minor injuries.

Several doctors gathered to see what it did to one of the men. A stream of lightning hit him in the forehead, traveled down his body, and exited out of his big toe. Along the way it partly traveled down his pants and burned them, and where it exited his toe, it blew the nail off.

It also blew the end of his boot off. He had a red line where it ran down his leg. Presumably that's his scar now.

Correction, the OP claims the man was struck by "lightening" which dictionary.com defines as: "the descent of the uterus into the pelvic cavity, occurring toward the end of pregnancy, changing the contour of the abdomen and facilitating breathing by lessening pressure under the diaphragm." A little girl and her sister were struck by lightning getting off the school bus about a week ago... they said they had "marks that look like flowers" on their arms at first, but they went away. I had no clue wtf that could be, but looking at these, I can see how a 9 year old and 12 year old could think it looks like a vine of tiny flowers.

[–]db0255 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True, however it doesn't look like a special scar other than the crazy design, so seeing as scars will get tender but not hurt A LOT, unless he is currently frying from the inside, he might be fine for all we know.

[–]stumo 14 points15 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

From my first aid training, we were told that industrial electrocution tends to run through the body's blood and nervous systems, doing all kinds of serious internal damage. Lightning strikes, however, tend to stay at the surface and are more survivable.

I don't know if this kind of skin scar is painful or not, but I think that in many cases, lightning survivors don't have serious lasting damage.

Winston never goes to the doctor for anything. He was broken limbs and been shot and still never saw a doctor. A “small” thing like a lightning strike wasn’t going to change that.

Yeah that's a little nuts.

The scar is cool, for all the reasons already mentioned. The permanent nerve damage is sad. But what is saddest of all, is the appalling ignorance of physics and anatomy exhibited by so many here.

No, the pattern is NOT in any way related to either nerve or vein patterns under the skin. It's purely a consequence of the behavior of very fast rise-time electrical impulse, distributing charge over a conductive surface. Ironically, this is also known as the 'skin effect', but usually referring to the 'skin' of a metal conductor carrying high frequency current. Also, Lichtenberg patterns, for these types of patterns left by fast electrical discharges: http://capturedlightning.com/frames/lichtenbergs.html

The strike hit near the top of his arm, where all the branches radiate from a point. It looks like he was hit by a minor side-streamer of the main lightning current path. Otherwise he's have a very much more severe main burn track traveling down his body towards the ground. I have a strip of wood about 5 feet long and half an inch thick, that was blasted out of a tree trunk by a lightning main strike. He didn't get that effect, and he's really lucky he didn't.

In lightning strikes there's a potential difference of several million volts, and the current rise time in the strike path can be as short as a few tens of nanoseconds. The result is that charge redistribution to objects near the strike path is driven by very fast rise-time electrostatic fields, while strongly constrained by the magnetic field of the current paths involved in discharging the electric fields. It's a kind of pushing match between the magnetic field constriction of the paths, vs electric fields due to the proximity of as-yet unequalized charge areas. Hence the branching Lichtenburg patterns, in which successively smaller fractal branches equalize smaller and smaller charge areas around the 'trunk' discharge lines.

Lichtenburg figures can occur as 3D shapes inside insulating or poorly conductive media (perspex, soil), or on the surface of good conductors. Where the material is a good conductor (metal, or salty flesh and blood) the current spike is mostly constrained to a thin layer at the surface since magnetic fields associated with the current are unable to move into the medium rapidly (induced currents oppose the movement.) The original current is unable to penetrate since it's own magnetic field is trapped at the surface and blocks progression into the material. See also 'Litz wire'.

tl;dr: He's really lucky. Lightning struck the ground within a few feet of him, and he copped a relatively small side-streamer because he presented a juicy chunk of available charge just on the border of the strike's electrostatic equalization sheath. Looks like he got only his own charge rapidly transfered to the strike, without any of the million-amp main strike going through him.

Thanks for the explanation, but this:

But what is saddest of all, is the appalling ignorance of physics and anatomy exhibited by so many here.

Is a bit harsh. Your knowledge requires either an advanced degree in a related science or significant experience in a niche field. Not knowing what you just posted does not automatically qualify someone as ignorant.
