You feel like a Jags fan? I'm so sorry.

You won't be laughing next year. We have all the building blocks in place to, with a little luck, go 8-8.

With how awful the division is, that might be playoff material.

[–]jmanpc 2 points3 points ago

Yes, everyone will still laugh at the Jags. Perhaps just not as hard.

(I'm a Jags fan, too. A fan with very little confidence)

Blaine Gabbert is your quarterback...you are not going 6-10 let alone 8-8

[–]Darth_Corleone 0 points1 point ago

Everyone was on his nutz after the Combine last year, and he was considered a steal where the Jags drafted him on Draft day. He'll pan out just fine, but greatness is never guaranteed (nor out of the question... the kid is like 22 yrs old).

[–]deaft -1 points0 points ago

The defense has pieces. The offense only has MJD. With a whole new coaching staff and keeping Blaine Gabbert at the helm? You're lucky to get 6 wins next year.

As an American living in the Netherlands, I gotta say that shit ain't much better here. Idiocy, greed and general douchebaggery is a global phenomenon, especially among elected officials.

[–]russiangn 25 points26 points ago

That's why I HATE the I am European and I'm awesome and American sucks posts...

[–]Upvote_I_will 30 points31 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, besides the PVV and Wilders in particular it isn't that bad right? On the other hand, most Europeans probably get their share of American politics throught the Daily Show, which just points out the stupidest things.

[–]jesamdeco 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The fact that the PVV and Wilders have any popularity should show you that things here are headed in a bad direction, away from social consciousness and more towards being focused on the bottom line. Dutch health care and transportation used to be the gold standard in Europe but now is expensive and though not completely inefficient has taken a huge dip. I WISH people here were getting their American news from the Daily show, at least then they'd see that many Americans recognize how absurd things are and demand a little more sanity from the public discourse. Most Dutchies that I know have barely heard of the Daily Show and if they do it's generally only because they've tried a few failed Dutch versions of it, but now just air the US episode the following night on Comedy Central, which is more like Nickelodeon than the CC I'm used to. Dutch news shows cover American politics the same as the Daily Show does in many ways, pointing out the stupidity of the Republican candidates and their debates as a measuring stick of the general populace for instance, as though we want politics to resemble American Idol more than an intellectual exchange. The difference is that with Stewart commenting on it, I feel (and think foreigners would be too) that there are plenty of intelligent people calling bullshit, they just don't get far in politics because what corporation would back that? I can't tell you how many arguments I've gotten into with Dutch people who try to give me shit for the state of affairs in America with an air of self-satisfaction, and whereas I can't argue that shit's not fucked back home, it seems very clear that the Netherlands is following the same blueprint to self-destruction.

[–]cyco 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When it comes to the Republican candidates, I think it's important to note that turnout rates in presidential primaries are anywhere from .6% (Maine) to 31.1% (New Hampshire, a major outlier due to its early status) with an average of 9% (so far, source). It's a little unfair to judge an entire country by such a small number of people.

[–]jesamdeco 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's my point, and thank you for the stats; here in the Netherlands, all you see on the news are 30 second clips here and there talking about how crazed Americans are over the next idiot from Texas, without in-depth analysis over who is actually paying any attention. I think that knowing that a good portion (more than turn up at the primaries no doubt) of America enjoy if not agree with the opinions of The Daily Show and laugh/shudder at the garbage that Fox News dumps daily would help our image in foreign lands.

To be clear, I don't mean to say that you can't find good information here, American political discourse is just not a huge portion of the nightly news, so you can't really blame people for making these snap judgments based on the little info they have.

[–]kialna 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I understand you completely, but honestly, do you in america even hear about news in The Netherlands? And I'm not talking about huge disasters like the moerdijk fire. Or Enschede. I do, on regular basis, see dutch media report about american, african and asian stuff. Short, mostly lopsided, but it's there. And there are always different media reporting the 'other' sides. Do you guys in america even get news about NL? Or Austria? Or Sweden? And I mean in no way any offence, but I'm just curious.

[–]jesamdeco 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

More so with the Eurozone crisis, but not much. It's comparable really, passing snipits of European news, but we hear about specific EU countries about as frequently as you hear about specific states in the US, and seeing as the Netherlands has only 16M people and is roughly 2x the size of New Jersey, Nederland pops up only when something huge goes down or there's war criminals to be tried, and even then it's brief.

[–]kialna 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh I see. We can be proud. Ahem. Oh well I always remind myself of he fact that 80% of the population isn't very smart. To put it nicely.

"Do you guys in america even get news about NL? Or Austria? Or Sweden? And I mean in no way any offence, but I'm just curious."

No. At least not in the mainstream media, last I checked. You can find it if you look for it, but unless it's a major natural disaster, or somehow relates to some war we're fighting, it's not going to be on the TV news. And not even all of the natural disasters make it. The state of the news media here in the US is fairly dismal.

[–]kialna 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ok. I'm fairly interested in the world though. So.. One day I will find out about all those things myself and be either surprised, shocked or neutral

[–]mostirrelephant 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Natural disasters, wars human interest stories and major directions in major countries. no offense, but it makes a bit more sense for dutch news to follow american politics than american news to follow dutch politics. I don't mean this in a jingoistic way, but the us is still the big swinging dick on the works political stage, mostly because nobody else really chooses to be.

[–]kialna 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I laughed at the swinging dick part. I do understand, but what about germany, france and such? Or just the EU in general?

[–]mostirrelephant 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We get news about them, sure. But you probably get more new about us than we do them. After all, we are a country of over three hundred million people, we are involved in multiple violent conflicts, likely to get involved in at least one more and to to it of we have a circus side show of a primary season going on.

[–]Fionnlagh 0 points1 point ago

We don't get much news about anything over there. I have to go to BBC for any European news. Any suggestions? Any good English language stuff? Or at least French/Spanish?

[–]kialna 0 points1 point ago

French: TV5 English: BBC 1,2,3 German: ZDF, WDR (I thought) For more I'd have to go down and look for them. Righr now I'm just lazy in bed.

[–]Taniwha_NZ 0 points1 point ago

To put this in context, following from my earlier reply, TDS viewer numbers of 2.3m people is almost exactly 0.6% of 350m people, so it's about the same as the lowest turnout for these primaries.

Just FYI.

[–]jesamdeco 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is much smaller than I thought, but it would still help our image immensely. I wonder if that number takes in to account web views. Or what the number would be if you accounted for illegal dl. Still smaller than I thought I'm sure, but with the demographic in question, it could be considerably higher.

[–]kialna 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because our politics want to be the US lapdogs. I'm glad that Mark Rutte doesn't want to be that anymore, however, we're still shooting ourselves in the knees. I agree we're going downward, but I still say it's better than what I hear from all my american friends.

[–]jesamdeco 0 points1 point ago

We'll see. From what I can tell, y'all are just 20 years behind.

[–]-Toil- 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The daily show isnot a good source of news. It is satire and as such only reports on things that can get laughs don't get Mr wrong, I love it but it should not be viewed as a compass for the direction we are heading.

[–]jesamdeco 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I see that you read the boiled down version. Of course I fully agree and wasn't saying otherwise. For the most part Europeans (Nederlanders at least) have a basic idea of what's happening in the states, all I mean to say is that The Daily Show exemplifies that much of America shares the opinion that 24 hour cable news networks, if not the American political system in general has become a joke, more intent on getting ratings (Nielson and approval respectively) than doing their stated tasks.

What I was saying is that it would be good for our image to make it know that we can be critical and laugh at ourselves. I didn't realize before moving overseas but in general Americans are viewed as not having a (good) sense of humor, especially when it comes to ourselves, The Daily Show is a great example of how we can look at our reflection and honestly laugh at our flaws.

[–]Taniwha_NZ 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think you are overestimating the popularity and cultural reach of TDS. Their audience is tiny and they are only on basic cable, so tens of millions of US citizens can't see it even if they want to.

EDIT: To be clear, TDS is currently enjoying it highest ratings and averages just over 2m viewers. In Free-To-Air television, every night the winning show is around 15m to 18m viewers. Considering the population of 350m, it really is a very small number who choose to enjoy Jon Stewart.

Besides which, on the conservative side Stewart is pretty much despised and ridiculed, while the few that watch Colbert seem to think he's actually a serious conservative making jokes about liberals.

Also, you are making a mistake that is common from people who live in a particular society - you think things are worse than they are, or are getting worse more quickly than they are. The popularity of Wilders & Co is disturbing, but the general political and social atmosphere in Holland is so much more enlightened than the US, it would take a century of degradation before it got to US levels. Holland has been the center of global tolerance and openness for a thousand years, it's not going to turn into a right-wing hate-camp in a single decade.

[–]jesamdeco 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't really think that I'm overstating the popularity of TDS, at least among liberals. Even (intelligent) conservatives seems to respect Stewart. Granted, other than just about every person in my life (from either camp) I know loving TDS, my thoughts on it's popularity is based almost solely on the admiration and attention that Tery Gross (of NPR's Fresh Air) gives it, and I feel that she speaks for a good portion of the left. Even if I am wrong about its reach, it represents a more appealing American viewpoint than that of Fox News, so even if it's an inaccurate portrayal of the general consensus, it might still keep me from having to frequently make clear to Europeans that I am from northern California, not America, so as to shut them up about how I personally am contributing to the downfall of civilization.

Which brings me to your next point: Holland is tolerant, yes, but that is a far cry from accepting. Not that the San Francisco bay area is perfect, but it is pretty damn accepting. Holland is at best middle of the road psuedo-liberal, and very conservative once you get out of the cities. Many people pay lip service to tolerance but you can bet they don't have the Moroccan family from next door over for dinner. I've heard more off the cuff racist statements here than ever at home, and these are Amsterdamers too, not farmers. Sure, they're jokes, but go a little deeper and you find that though the person is laughing, there is fear and ignorance there. I won't go too far into it, but being from a place that I consider to be a fairly good model for true tolerance, Holland (and even Amsterdam) is severely lacking, or at least not living up to its reputation. I know I must sound like a bleeding heart here, but don't mistake these sentiments as angry complaints, but just surprised observations that you might find interesting.

This got off-track, but my point was that Holland is not a hippy-dippy crunchy granola as you might think and the atmosphere here around immigration is pretty hateful, even from people who consider themselves to be fairly left-wing. I wasn't really even speaking to that aspect of Holland though, but more to the collective move towards privatization of once social programs. That's the blueprint I was referring to.

p.s. I cannot believe that people take Colbert seriously. I've heard it before, but have never met any. They must be so confused about his being on Comedy Central, and his friendship with Jon Stewart. I guess these are the people that cry when their favorite wrestler is robbed of his rightful victory.

[–]Taniwha_NZ 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's a very interesting observation about Dutch tolerance, or acceptance. Historically, I have always read about their tolerance of radical religious views, philosophies, and so on, while in my own time, it's the tolerance of drug use that has most commonly been discussed and admired.

I don't think I've ever read of Holland being particularly accepting of foreign cultures and races, and we should know by now that there's a very strong nationalist streak through almost all the western European countries - Germany/Austria, France, the Scandanavians... they have all been in the news over the years for really nasty racist acts, both by citizens and by the government, and having a tendency for neo-nazi groups to pop up and get a lot of news for a while before shrinking again.

This is a quite significant difference between the type of tolerance practised in Holland versus somewhere like the Bay Area. In the Bay, racism against foreign cultures is political and social poison, it's just not acceptable. But that is most definitely not the case right across the country.

I'm not sure what to learn from this, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Try visiting Portland sometime. I can't say we don't have racism, but it's easily one of the least racist places I've ever seen. I've had friends move from the South and New England, and they're amazed at the lack of barely concealed racism they're used to. People here are actually friendly.

About the P.S., Colbert even said in a college graduation speech that he plays a character, and people way too often confuse him with the character.

Let's face it, it happens everywhere only it's more reported in the US through reddit. Isn't that a good thing?

[–]no_more_jokes 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a bit overstated, police brutality isn't exactly a common and integrated part of American life, it's just that when it does happen it gets a huge amount of attention from reddit (and rightfully so). As for the politics, it's bad, but not very many other countries are much better.

I am ashamed to be an American. Please accept my most humble apology, almighty European. We, as lowly Americans, live in a backwards society where it requires a work ethic and initiative to succeed. Who knows, maybe with enough picketing and shitting on cop cars we can influence the United States to adopt a more advanced, progressive system characterized by complete dependence upon the government.

I just hope the rest of the world realizes that the vast majority of Americans don't take seriously whatsoever the current crop of Republican candidates.

[–]Robotochan 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So.... are we assuming that means that Obama will win by a landslide then?

[–]elmassivo 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Obama will get re-elected, but there will be a large amount of bitching and moaning from the conservative camp. The reelection will likely not be as large of a lead as it as it was in 2008 this time, however.

There is too much infighting and unintelligent discourse in the current list of Republican candidates for them to produce an even remotely viable candidate.

[–]DashingSpecialAgent -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pretty much.

If Ron Paul got the republican nomination I would have to think about not voting for Obama but other wise it's a case of "I can't wait to see who the republicans nominate to scare me into voting for Obama again."

What you should get from this is that I'm not exactly happy with Obama as president but when my choice is between a giant douche and being run over with a mack truck I'll take the giant douche.

Really funny how much Europeans hate the USA when most of their nations are bankrupt, and in much worse shape than the us.

[–]Ranzera 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, the U.S. is only better off before you start actually looking at the books. The U.S. debt to gdp ratio is actually worse than Greece's you know...

[–]summitrock 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah we are worse off than Greece.......

[–]Ranzera 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In fact, we are. You see, we're staying afloat by printing large amounts of money(Something Greece cannot do because they are on the Euro). The only reason this isn't hyperinflating our currency is due to the petrodollar system that the world economy uses(creates artificial demand for the dollar negating inflation somewhat). There is a trend that is just getting started (trading for oil in currencies other than the dollar) which threatens the status of the petrodollar system. If enough countries trade for oil in other currencies then the U.S. economy will implode.

This is why we went to war in Iraq(the real reason). Saddam was threatening to trade oil in Euros. It's why we got involved in Egypt and it's why we're sabre rattling with Iran. The U.S. gov knows if the petrodollar fails this country is wholey fucked. Things are just started to go out of control now that India and China are considering doing the same. We can't threaten them like we can with small time despotic nations.

[–]summitrock 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Interesting. Had to google petrodollar.

But if you walk into a bar full of economist and finance guys and tell them greece and the US equal economies they will laugh you out of the room right?

[–]Ranzera 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I imagine they would, though I don't see what relevance that has. The petrodollar is the difference between the USA and Greece. Take it away and suddenly things will start looking very similar.

love how reddit always turns into the same level of 12 year olds debating ps3 vs xbox in 10 seonds flat when posts like these come along.

It's not the people posting these that are the problem, it's the people upvoting and commenting.

[–]unstablxxx 4 points5 points ago

OP might want to get a least a part of his information from sources that aren't traditionally leftist, like reddit is. Leftists, in general, dispise the way the US has always worked so the info OP is getting is suspect.

[–]wookiesandwich 1 point2 points ago

leftist vs rightist, conservative vs liberal, you're a fucking idiot...go crack a couple beers and ponder on the wise words of Chris Rock:

Anyone who makes up their mind before they hear the issue is a fucking fool. Everybody, nah, nah, nah, everybody is so busy wanting to be down with a gang! I’m a conservative! I’m a liberal! I’m a conservative! It’s bullshit!

Be a fucking person. Listen. Let it swirl around your head. Then form your opinion. No normal decent person is one thing. OK!?! I got some shit I’m conservative about, I got some shit I’m liberal about. Crime – I’m conservative. Prostitution – I’m liberal.

Aye. Reddit has a very biased view against America. You don't see many stories here of cooperative and reasonable cops, for example, but they obviously exist. Likewise you don't see many stories of European police brutality, which Britain alone has a delightful history of and having dealt with French police I assume they do to.

the truth is, if ANY of the european countries had as much power money and global influence as we've had for the last half century or so, their policies would be EXACTLY like that of the U.S. and in some cases, looking at past abuses, would probably be even worse. /rant:one issue with police work today is that there is a stigma caused by how people treat police, and how police in turn treat them. this was created after a few bad officers abused their power repeatedly since the establishment of an organized police force. they say absolute power corrupts absolutely and that right there is the issue. (i would hope that) people who become police officers have an education to see what has been happening in society in the last 100 years or so and then learn from the mistakes made. i would also hope that people, such as myself, would attend school to become effective community-oriented police officers that work to help people.

the other problem comes from people with military background. and before i continue on that i want to stress that i have no issue with people in the military, people with military backgrounds or anyone related to anything involving the military. but as i was saying, people who go from the military to police work are never trained properly to see people differently than how they were seen in the military.

as the thin blue veil grows the shadow over law enforcement becomes darker.

proper police are there to help, and not to hurt. Ones that are hurting need to be dealt with more severely so that the ones who are helping are not looked down upon.

I like all the americans getting offended cause buddy pointed out how insane your cops and some of your politicans are. Hes not saying your inferior or anything, hes just pointing out all the severe "WTF"-ery feeling you get when you read about another cop abusing his/her power and getting away with it, and the politicians that outright say how bigotted they are. The Harper Goverment up here in canada is fucked up, but he doesn't try to use his misogynistic cult, his racism, etc as a selling point in his campagn ads. I'm not saying its better its hidden but don't tell me when first saw Rick Perry's "strong" video, or when you heard for the first time about a corrupt cop that you weren't in utter disbelief. Half the time I'm so shocked an dismayed I do feel half amused cause its the only thing you can do, since I'm hundreds r thousands of kilometers away from wherever I'm reading about. You either gotta laugh it off in disbelief, or get off the interwebs So stop getting butthurt, unless I should take it to believe you're all insane cops/politicians. Hes not dissing you, hes talking about the corruption. You don't hear Russians getting pissed when you point out the Putin election.
