Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

It works a lot better with smaller, less popular subreddits. Say a picture of Pikachu fighting Agumon would be perfectly reasonable to post both in /r/pokemon and /r/digimon because its likely that not all the people in one subreddit are also in the other one.

Still, its kinda bull here with them being /r/pics and /r/trees, both of which are huge... But its a little bit reasonable since people that are subscribed to only one of the two would only see it once.

Here's my intuitive non-expert pulled-out-of-my-ass educated guess at why these things look more 3-dimensional to our eyes than looking at, say, a normal photo or video footage of 3D things:

When we sit/stand still and look at a 3D object, we aren't really still. Our heads wobble a little bit, and our perspective wobbles slightly. Even though we may feel like we're keeping our heads pretty still, our brains pick up on the slight changes of perspective and use that information to construct the depth information of the object we're looking at. It sort of builds a mental 3D model of the object.

When we see a flat picture of a 3D object, our brains aren't fooled: it sees that the image is actually flat, because the objects in the image don't react to our changes in perspective the way a real 3D object would.

However, the OP's image is taking advantage of how our brains build 3D models of still objects. The image itself appears to wobble slightly, and the objects in the image change perspective the way a real object would as our own perspective wobbles. Even though the image might not be wobbling in sync with our heads, our brains still react to it the same way, using the changes in perspective to form a mental 3D model of the object. This only works if the wobble is subtle, because otherwise our brains figure it out.

Does anyone have more information on this phenomenon, or maybe the name for it? Or an alternative explanation?
