Little known fact: in Ohio, "the floor is lava" is not a children's game. It's a lifelong commitment.

Ah, the state motto. How could I have forgotten?

[–]FenrirIII 85 points86 points ago

For me it was the open sky at night. I was born and raised in a small town surrounded by flat farmland and no big city lights. You could go outside and lay in a hammock and just look at the stars all night. Having nothing much to do and the universal light show going on above you makes you dream of going there.

I assumed something like this was the case. I believe that's also part of what got Neil Degrasse Tyson interested in space. [citation needed]

And then you have people like me who live just outside of Cleveland.....

Forbes Magazine's 2010 most miserable city, where you encounter more homeless people than actual people on your daily walk to CSU, and where probably some of the worst sports teams in the world reside.

TL DR; I hate Ohio....

Edit: OH I forgot about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That's about all there is.

Edit2: Apparently I've hit a couple soft spots in the hearts of some Clevelanders here. I apologize for stating my opinion, but how about this, instead of making a sudden breach of redditquitte, and down voting me just because you don't share my opinion, give me examples. Tell me WHY you think this city is so great. I'm bored as hell of living here because I think there's nothing to do here. Do you think otherwise? Give me examples! So far I've seen none.

Hello fellow north coaster!

I still prefer Cleveland to Columbus. Our weather does generally suck though.

[–]Omnifarious 5 points6 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I love Cleveland and I love our winters some people just can't cut it for our winters though.

Growing up my grandfather and I had to drag a snow-blower up onto the roof some winters and blow it off when it started getting too heavy, eventually he installed heating in the roof to just keep the snow/ice melted on it.

As bad as people claim Ohio is as someone born/raised here I've lived in FL, GA, NC, CA, PA, IN and DC and I keep coming back here.

As someone from Ohio, I can tell you that if I was ever given the choice, I'd leave this planet so fast I would travel back in time.

[–]jntwn 40 points41 points ago

I drove through your state on the way back from Ft. Knox to Canada. People from Ohio were really nice, and the girls were much better looking than in Louisville. It was almost like Canada, except less snow and the Tim Hortons was really inefficient.

Overall A++ Would drive through again.

As someone from Ohio, I can tell that you probably live somewhere in the 80% of the state that is boring and flat. Cleveland, Cinci, and Columbus however are actually pretty nice cites.

[–]jntwn 8 points9 points ago

Stateside, asking for a whiskey will often get you a bourbon, as it's really the only distinct American whiskey besides Tennessee whiskey, and that market is basically just Jack Daniel's.

People who live in Ohio but hate it are the "grass is always greener" type of people. They are boring people who can't find ways to amuse themselves so they blame it on the state and assume that if they lived somewhere else their life would suddenly be amazing.

I love Ohio.

[–]powderdd 1 point2 points ago*

From my own experience I agree. I used to not do shit and called my city (Dayton) boring because I think it's a lot easier to blame it on something external. It's different now I'm actually developing talents and investing in things. Not that I really want to stay here much longer, but I certainly don't hate Dayton anymore.

[–]azizabah 1 point2 points ago

Amen. Other states are for visiting. Ohio is for actually being a decent place to live.

[–]postmodgirl 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As an Ohioan who moved away and back, I find that people who bitch about this state only do so because they never bother to get off their ass to find the cool shit. All they see is football, beer, and republicans.

But, there is a great undercurrent of weird here. You actually need actual effort to find it. It's not commercialized west coast burning man shit, or east coast hipster shit. It lays low, and it thrives.

It helps when you don't have a blanket negative attitude. There is a lot wrong about the politics of this state, but there is a lot to like about it too.

[–]mrzambaking 7 points8 points ago

I was born, raised and live in Ohio. Having been to at least 20 other major US cities on both costs, down south and out in the mid-west i have to agree with this. Ohio has what you want, you just can't be a lazy ass fuck about life.

and about the astronaut thing, we used to hold a significant percentage of the country's population before everyone moved out west and down south. So that's why.

Listen. Here's the thing about Ohio.

It's a goddamned trap.

I was born in Ohio and grew up there. It is a FANTASTIC place to grow up. There's very little in the way of danger (at least where I lived).

The problem is that it's too comfortable a place to live. You get used to life in Ohio way too quickly because of how...Well I don't really know how to describe it. It's just...pleasant.

People who come to Ohio and weren't born here forget where they've come from. My old AP Chem teacher back in High School told us he's from Southern California. We were astounded that he liked life better in Ohio.

Now in terms of deciding to leave or stay in Ohio, you're faced with opposing extremes. The people who stay in Ohio stay there for good. You're born in Ohio, live in Ohio, and you die in Ohio. And that's fine, because it's a nice enough place that you'd be content to live there forever.

The people who leave Ohio, however, usually don't move back to Ohio. I left Ohio to attend college in the south because I knew that if I didn't leave Ohio, I too would probably become complacent. I knew I needed to experience the world immediately. And I'm glad I did.

Now I love going back and visiting Ohio and seeing my family and friends from back home, don't get me wrong. But I am very glad I moved away.

That's what's up with Ohio.

Also, if you want your mind blown, look at how many astronauts were boyscouts. If anything, id say the 1940s Ohio BoyScouts are the training grounds for our planets greatests explorers. Im kinda jealous.

Am i the only one whos impressed here? !!!

It could be that people from Ohio are more easily adaptable to different environments and are very competent. How many people from other states tried to be an astronaut and failed?

Since you reposted this picture, I'm reposting my comment ; )

In order to become an astronaut, it's necessary to have a degree in some scientific/engineering discipline AND you must have research/projects to complete during the mission. You could also be one hell of a pilot - among the best our armed forces has to offer.

No astronaut wants to permanently leave the earth (as that entails death).

Ohio State offers some of the best academics in its region of the country, and Ohio University was just ranked the #1 party school in the country. Ohio is also home to some of the best high school and college athletics in the country.

The dichotomy of "Work Hard, Play Hard" is definitely alive and well in many other aspects of Ohio life as well.

BUT by far: The best thing about Ohio is the PEOPLE!

I notice these general trends AROUND the 42 degree latitude line [not considering southern states]:

Western US: Strangers judge you by what you do (career), and will think less of you if they view themselves to be more important. People seem to care more about themselves than others.

Eastern US: Strangers don't really give a fuck about you or what you do unless you have a relationship with them already. They will think low of you regardless of many factors; they will avoid interaction if possible. People tend to focus on their success before all else.

Midwestern US: Strangers are genuinely interested in each other, they will strike up conversations that go beyond socially-awkward small-talk like the weather. People tend to give the benefit-of-the-doubt to strangers. People tend to focus on community values and use happiness (not $) as a measure of success.

Ohio will always seem like a winner to me, I may be slightly biased because I was raised here.

Yet, I have traveled to 23 countries and more than half of the US States so it is reasonable to assume that I may have a broader perspective than the average Redditor.

Sorry that this kind of turned into a rant, but I am an Aeronautical Engineer from Cleveland so this post was like a dagger pushed deep into my heart ; )

Talking about one state vs another is quite pointless. I live in Ohio, and when I cross a state border, nothing changes. People need to get over themselves thinking what's going on in their area is the worst thing possible. I never once thought "oh man, Ohio sucks so much, wish I could leave."

[–]coolest_username 2 points3 points ago

as an ohioan, i actually like it here. the hunting is great, and you can get as rural or urban as you want. it's a great blend of all kinds of people living different lifestyles. my one friend lives on a farm raising animals, yet 10 minutes down the road is a huge urban center. also 25 minutes away is Cincinnati, where i go to college. GO UC!

As someone raised on a farm in rural Ohio, I can attest to laying out in the hayfield for hours, staring into the vastness of space. We had no light pollution, no ambient noise, no traffic. Yeah, we might not have all of the conveniences of a city, but we got to learn what the word infinity meant, every night. That's something no snide marks about my geographic location will ever take away.

[–]HardDiction 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I came here to make this very point. Growing up in LA, you get to see the major constellations, but that's just about it. I went up to Mammoth and I had my mind blown -- and then I went to the observatory at Mauna Kea and saw the Milky Way with my own eyes and I realized how deprived I had been by the light pollution of the city :(

The one thing I've noticed being born and raised in Ohio is that everyone leaves, but they inevitably return when they realize they don't fit in with anywhere else. Thanks Akron.

Born in Toledo, I can vouch for this comment. Ohio is not the best. But of all Ohio, I'm certain Toledo is worst. The local government doesn't know it's own ass from a hole in the ground. And our local judges are constantly fighting like children (when they show up for work at all). Our Police are as bad as it gets. If it were not for family. . .

It's funny, I'm from Ohio and you're always hearing all kinds of random stats regarding something successful and how an unusual majority of people involved originally were from Ohio.

I've traveled the country so I'm not biased, and I will affirm Ohio does suck and it's probably no coincidence that people here strive to achieve that much harder just to get out of this shithole. No doubt about it. I would love to leave right now but I'm stuck here due to family.

See I don't understand this I have lived in a lot of places around the country for example I have lived in California, Michigan and I am currently in DC and Ohio is no better or worse than most places just depends on the city you are in. To tell you the truth I would much rather live in Ohio than DC.

Here in Dayton, Ohio, we have had the guy who invented the automobile engine (Charles Kettering [Kettering is where I live in Dayton], the guys who invented the airplane, and a bunch of astronauts. It doesn't matter if by car, plane, or spaceship, no one wants to live here in bi-polar weather (and politics) Ohio. Yesterday was 55 degrees. Today is high 30's.
