It took me a long time to realize it. But now, in my 20's I realize how good and real and accurate King of the Hill is.

Same here. I always thought it was boring as hell. Then I stopped paying attention for a few years, come back around age 19, 20... And I want to go back in time and slap my younger self.

Kind of a catch-22 that if you're not familiar with Texas, you definitely don't take it as accurate.

I didn't, anyways.

My question always was: do Texans actually love their lawn as much as Hank Hill?

[–]meowtiger 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it's hard to maintain a decent lawn in texas, but if you take pride in your home it's kind of a big deal - a house just doesn't look as good without some healthy grass in front of it

Texan and atheist here, and I am with you good sir. LOL My mother used to rush out to buy every new cd released at Family Christian Bookstore "Look Clay, it's like Green Day" is what she said about MXPX

[–]phanboy 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

98% of MXPX has nothing to do with religion. They are openly Christian, though.

[–]Golden_Kumquat 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sounds like they're about as much of a Christian band as The Killers, then.

[–]oddmanout 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They were on a christian label for a long time. (Tooth & Nail) I'm not sure what the requirements are, but for a christian label, they actually had some good bands, and most of them never talked about god or anything. Generally, though, the more they talked about God, the more awful the music was.

Sometimes bands pretend to be christian because they get a lot of exposure. For example, my band was definitely not christian, but there were christian shows in this town about an hour away and they were huge. So we pretended.

Then we had enough. So with permission from the rest of the band, the singer, towards the end of the set tells his favorite joke. "Why was Jesus so popular with the ladies? Because he's hung like this" (then put his arms). They shut off the mic and never asked us back. It didn't matter, we were heroes, (a lot of punks went to the xian shows b/c it was the only shows there were). We had gotten really popular, and helped start up a non Christian scene around there. We'd go back and play shows about once a month there.

[–]GandalfTheFunky 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

MXPX puts on an amazing show. When the lead singer who is also the bassist throws his Ernie Ball Music Man twenty feet into the air between lines of the song it's a good show.

I also heartily enjoy their music.

[–]ibjeremy 2 points3 points ago

TIL... To be fair, I only know "Move to Bremerton"

[–]claybfx 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They are more in the vein of POD in that their music generally isn't in-your-face preaching, but they are very open about their faith. I didn't dislike the band, just wasn't into the music.

[–]ToraZalinto 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most christian rock isn't very preachy at all. Some of the songs have more obvious religious implications. But opinions like the OP's are just...bleh. The content does not belittle the genre. TFK, Demon Hunter, Red, Skillet, and others are all testament to that.

[–]stellarfury 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Keep in mind that I haven't heard of any of the bands you just mentioned, but I think your definition of the genre might be a bit broad.

If it isn't preachy, most people won't classify it as "Christian Rock." If it isn't the kind of thing you'd hear on the radio played right before or after Our God Is An Awesome God, it isn't really "Christian Rock."

The term doesn't mean "Rock played by Christians," it means "Rock with a Christian message."

High school for me as well. My mom bought me the first Five Iron album at some Christian bookstore. I left it laying around unopened 'cause I knew Christian music sucked. A friend of mine eventually unwrapped it and played it and I was shocked. From there I found Supertones, Insydersz, One Eighty, and The W's.

They hysterical on the albums and on stage. The "These Are Not My Pants" rock opera really moved me.

Also, one band member was called Jeff the Girl.

[–]Geeraff 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What about Project 86? I got into them when I was more religious; I still listen to them... they're christian, but their lyrics are pretty dark.

[–]Calebar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They have some very critical music about mainstream Christianity as well, with songs like SMC (Sunday Mass Consumption) and more or less Truthless Heroes as a whole. I haven't heard anything since the album after that (Songs to Burn Your Bridges By I think?) but hopefully they kept that up.

If they made another album like Drawing Black Lines I'd definitely listen to it.

[–]Geeraff 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I started listening to them during Songs to Burn Your Bridges By. Then I backtracked to Truthless Heroes and kept listening till Rival Factions. I thought most of those albums had some pretty good songs on there. But I'll check out Drawing Black Lines. They were definitely one of my favorite bands because of their lyrics and their sound. Despite being christian, I still have a lot of respect for them because of, like you said, their music talks about a good amount of things that the religious community might question them for.

[–]Tfish 49 points50 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know about that. The show was on for thirteen years. I'd have to say people responded well with the central character, or else it wouldn't have lasted so long.

[–]hallowedsouls 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Considering that for a brief point of time in '97-'98 it outperformed the Simpsons, I'd say that the show has a pretty solid standing and probably owes a lot to the main character.

[–]redditgolddigg3r 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I just think in the grand scheme of good television characters, Hank Hill is often overlooked. Its not a Simpsons-type fandom, but he was a pretty complex guy, I still enjoy the reruns.

[–]bluegrassandbooze 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The show was consistently good for all 13 seasons. It never really experienced that "jump the shark" moment where it started to decline like most other shows that have lasted half that long. That is obviously due to the genius and workmanship of Mike Judge.

Coincidentally I also watched that episode last night, but on DVD. Fun fact from that episode, the group of skaters and the teen pastor were voiced by Sum41.

[–]csonnich 4 points5 points ago

[–]Tfish 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Pagan" has more than one definition, and is also synonym of "Heathen". A heathen is an unconverted member of a people or nation that does not acknowledge the God of the Bible, or an irreligious, or uncivilized person.

Pagan used in the context where Heathen would apply would be to further imply that the person not only doesn't believe in God, but takes pleasure in sensual, or material goods.

Contemporary Christian music actually used to have some really good bands. dc Talk, earlier Newsboys lineups, and Audio Adrenaline to name a few. Then the bands of that era ceased to exist about 10 years ago (for the most part) and were replaced by super cheesy crap. Only Jesus himself can save Christian music now....

Thanks Hank, couldn't have said it better!

On a side note, i have always been uneasy with the commercialization of religion. Does it not seem odd that, that under the flag of faith, a person or band would seek fame and fortune?

[–]hows_this 4 points5 points ago

I think you have the wrong idea about music and bands. I doubt most people get into it for fame and fortune.

There are plenty of non-religious people who are shit at music, but still play it. However people don't listen to them. If you want to be annoyed at someone, be annoyed at the people who enable christian rock to suck. Religious music doesn't actually have to be bad, if standards were raised it could be musically fine.

I don't fault people for taking advantage of the lower standard though. Hell, they may actually get better at music because they can support themselves while playing music.

I don't agree that nonsecular (specifically, Christian) is synonymous with crappy. Take Wovenhand for example. The majority (if not all) of David Eugene Edwards's music is deeply religious (in this case, again, Christian), but only a shy bit of it is a departure from brilliant. Saying that such intrinsically peerless music 'weakens rock' is entirely a fallacy. I would argue that only popular Christian bands gets the press as "Christian bands" due to how indescribably droll their lyrics typically are, allowing for even a quick listen to overextend the worn-out and obvious imagery of songs from bands like Creed (which represent the genre in no way more than Nickelback represents rock, or Lil' Wayne and Rap, etc.).

An example of his work.

[–]kaizerjd 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Kindly informing that secular means "not affiliated with a religion," and not how you have used it in your first sentence.

I wouldn't really call Justice a Christian group. The only connection between religion and their music is that they have a neon crucifix as a stage prop..

I'm a Christian but there's few things in this world that I despise more than Christian-themed music (aside from Hymns).

There's just this weird, oxymoronic pretentiousness to it. It's intolerable.

[–]Leezus 3 points4 points ago

I think it's the mindset that says the artist has to revolve their music around their religion. There's many many great songs inspired by faith, but these people don't sound like they're being inspired, they sound like they're writing jingles for God.

It's really sad when a great artist like Matishyahu is almost unlistenable for how cheesy all the lyrics end up sounding.
