What Christians do when somebody questions their beliefs. (2.bp.blogspot.com)

what most people do when somebody questions their beliefs.
FTFY
[–]YeNdEz 17 points18 points19 points 5 months ago
For my part, I answer their questions . . .
[–]goeraz 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago
Some people, Answer those questions . . .
[–]mercurialohearn 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
and most of their answers consist of variations of this basic formula:
"shut up," he explained.
this goes way deeper than a belief, or lack of belief, in gods. it appears to be a fundamental way that we relate to virtually every opinion or notion we hold about anything at all.
edit: at least, in the west. i wouldn't presume to know, for instance, how asians or africans handle a conversation in which one of their cherished convictions is called into question. i don't even know if they have cherished convictions, but i suspect they might.
[–]goeraz 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
Humans, scientifically speaking, are more absurd and dark than most people think, One doesn't simply "convince the other", Morality is subjective, so, whoever has more power, imposes his morality, it doesn't matter if you understand it or not, it doesn't matter if it's against your own morality, whoever is strongest, survives and imposes his morality, natural selection at its best.
If you morality is that it's better not to believe in anything not proven to exist, And the other person' morality is that science can't answer every question i have, including morality, then there isn't really a way to get to into a middle agreement, as no one of you is wrong, and no one is right, it's just that the strongest imposes his morality.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I do as well, but I really suck at it in real life. On the internet I can back someone into a corner and brand their beliefs with a red hot iron until they end the conversation, but in real life even the simple questions elicit a, "Well lets just agree to disagree," from me because I can't think on my feet very well.
Definitely something I need to work on.
[–]Sloppy1sts 10 points11 points12 points 5 months ago*
One thing the internet has is the ability to quickly research your opinion and back it up with facts. In real life, even if you know you're right, if you can't remember your shit perfectly, you're boned.
[–]MisterMcDuck 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
This is my problem. My memory sucks.
[–]TheMarshma 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
I can't converse because I start to feel like their brains are broken and get too angry. I mean I couldn't convince a girl the bible viewed women as inequal. She kept saying women are equal they just can't do the same stuff, or speak in church because god is a god of order, he wants them to be obedient to their husbands, but that doesn't mean he thinks they aren't worth the same.
Like what? Can you date me then, so I can order you around and you can tell everyone how fair I am? Like where the fuck is your brain?
[–]sorenk99 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
God gets to use a different definition of equality because he's "God." He gets his own definition of justice, love, etc., too. He plays by his own rules when his believers want to protect their idea of him. It's really that simple to most believers: if he created the universe, he can do anything and everything he wants, no tough questions asked.
[–]aP1atypus 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
Most thinking on your feet is being clever, and well, "Those who are clever, never understand anything" -Pooh. So don't worry too much about it.
[–]OryxConLara 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
Wear socks. Makes your feet warmer, stimulates the thinking muscles.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
I smile. I think my beliefs are interesting, so I'm always happy when someone else wants to talk about them. When someone denies evolution, then it usually means that they will find evolution the most mind blowing themselves (and that they are more resistant to understanding it).
[–]dispellado 39 points40 points41 points 5 months ago
Anyone from any walk of life tends to do this. This is simply a personal attack to make one feel superior in some way. Not every christian has an answer to every question but the same goes with atheists. And sometimes they simply parrot what they've heard from /r/atheism or hitchens or dawkins. All sides should be critically thinking and questioning their beliefs.
[–]breadrising 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
All sides should be critically thinking, however, the religious side tends to not only dismiss it, but deam it evil in some cultures.
I wish everyone would take everything critically; if that were true, Rick Santorum would not be as high up as he is on the polls. Sadly enough, most will believe exactly what hits their ears without giving it a second thought.
But you're right that we can't simply say "atheists are critical thinkers and religious folk are not," for there are plenty on either side that mesh. But, for the most part, the critical thinking majority is on the non-believing side, for the moment a lot of the religous begin to adapt critical thinking is the moment they begin to dismiss the beliefs that never required that sort of mind set.
[–]aua101 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Yeah, I dont think you should stereotype but the fact of the matter is there are a lot more intelligent and reasonable people on the athiest side. Thats just how it is I guess. (Religious btw_
[–]christmasbonus 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago
Yeah, cause we know all sides have the same deficiencies in critical thinking about their beliefs.

"What arrogant people do when somebody questions their beliefs"
Some of the nicest people I know are Mormon or Christian and i've met some real sicko atheists.
Belief doesn't have shit to do with it, it's all about the person (im an athiest btw)
[–]daniel_hlfrd 10 points11 points12 points 5 months ago*
Sure, if you talk to ignorant zealots they'll do this. In reality Christians and atheists act exactly the same when it comes to their beliefs and actions. You have logical people who promote something positive/uplifting/thought-provoking, your everyday people who believe and could care less what everyone else thinks, and that one asshole who wants to make a giant scene out of everything. As far as actions go, most activist atheists and religious organizations wind up simply doing volunteer work (Think Doctor Without Borders and The Salvation Army). It's about the betterment of society not spreading hate/ignorance.
In reality most modern day Christians keep using the bible out of tradition. Their main goal is Christianity at its basics: promote peace and love, help others, don't be a dick. Most of those same Christians would be happy to discuss any part of the bible with you, even the crazy shit that goes down in the old testament, but not when it turns into a one-upping contest. Most of the time when I see friends of mine who are atheist trying to "debate" parts of the bible it turns into them quoting one "damning" line over and over again and acting like that alone proves their point.
tl;dr Christians and atheists often are after the same goal. Also, not all Christians are afraid of debate, as long as you want to discuss and not just start a flame war.
[–]swimblizz88 -1 points0 points1 point 5 months ago
What I find particularly aggravating when I am having a discussion with my father, is that anything 'bad' that is in there is tossed aside as no longer applying or we just don't understand it. He has already reached the conclusion that God CANNOT do evil things so there is literally nothing more to discuss when I try to ask him, would a good god destroy the whole planet in a flood? well yes a good god would because god did it and he is good. And I am the one who doesn't understand the bible
So that being said, i think it is safe to say the discussion is over as soon as you prove to me that you weren't led by evidence, but rather by the per-concieved conclusion,
just some thoughts. not saying you do this, but this is surely a debate ender if you toss away the supremely evil things a supposedly supremely good God has done. Is God good because whatever he does must be good, or is God good by doing good actions?

[–]cal679 5 points6 points7 points 5 months ago
Or claiming that a quote which mentions religion in no way is standing up for atheists.
"I am the egg man, they are the egg men. I am the walrus. Goo goo g'joob" -John Lennon on why all Christians are illogical, definitely going to use this one!
[–]godless_savage 6 points7 points8 points 5 months ago

We got owned so hard. Oh darn.
[–]breadrising -2 points-1 points0 points 5 months ago
If you present verifiable, solid evidence as to why I should believe any of the religions are true, or more true than the rest, and it checks out without a reasonable doubt, I will be the first to change my mind. My mind is always willing to be changed and I'm always ready to be convinced I'm wrong. That's the beauty of caring about what is true.

Every time I come to start liking this sub. someone makes a shitpost like this.
What are you, 12?
[–]Yekkers 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
I think ill un-sub from r/atheism. All I've seen so far is no posts to do with atheism or discussion about atheism but just posts about you guys bashing religion. If you choose to be atheist then no one stops you, but why do you pressure religiois people about their beliefs?
I think you should relook at the front page. There is a lot of good content. EVERY SINGLE FUCKING SUBREDDIT HAS A FEW GARBAGE/HUMOROUS POSTS THAT PEOPLE UPVOTE SIMPLY BECAUSE IT MADE THEM CHUCKLE. You might as well unsub from r/politics, r/gaming, r/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu, r/AMA, and many other subs.
People like to pick on r/atheism lately because calling r/atheism a religous bashing circle jerk has become the new circle jerk. I could care less. If you see a post you think is stupid, downvote it and move on to the next one. That's kind of how this website works.
Oh! And have a great day :)
[–]Yekkers -1 points0 points1 point 5 months ago
Nice response ~.~ You say each reddit has a garbage post every now and then but that isnt what r/atheism has. Every post here is just bashing religion.
Not necessarily. What you see as "bashing religion," most atheists see as inspirational. I'm not sure if you're theist or not, but regardless, I'll leave you with this.
When the billboards went up, that simply said "There probably isn't a God, so live the best life you can," or something like that, a lot of religious people flipped their shit. This, by no means, is bashing religion. Yet, the religious took it that way.
What theists think is "offensive" is not seen as such to a lot of atheists. When I was a Christian, I'd see Dawkin's quotes and think "what an entitled douchebag." Now I see them and think "what a brilliant man who cares about the education of this world."
Strange how perspectives change.
that was pretty irelevent to my point - the majority of the posts in this sub-reddit is a religious person posting something on facebook and then a bunch of atheists jumping into the conversation and questioning their beliefs. its pretty silly, i'm an atheist myself but i came here to see posts ABOUT atheists not people going "lol look at him, he's religious. what an idiot."
[–]breadrising 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Currently on the front page:
Out of 25 posts there are 2 memes (one Wonka and one Zap Brannigan) and 1 Facebook post (the one about people playing the board game LIFE).
I agree, I hate it when facebook posts wander onto the frontpage, and I too was getting sick of certain memes such as the Santorum ones, but saying that its the majority of the content is not correct.
And when I was a Christian, seeing humorous posts like memes, while they pissed me off, actually got me thinking about my beliefs. Sometimes people need things to be presented in different ways before they actually start to evaluate their thoughts. Of course, that is merely a personal experience, but I'm certain the same applies to other people who frequent this subreddit.
I think humor has its place. As for the facebook posts, some can actually be good discussions; I've spent a lot of time reading through some of the well rounded debates and think they do have a place here. The ones that are merely an insult to religion or a quick little smartass response to someone's prayer request, I simply downvote, tell them to post to /r/thefacebookdelusion, and move on.
[–]swimblizz88 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
Because often those belief's translate into political action. I'd rather have evidence go into why a certain political action should be taken rather than: "this guy is Christian - he gets me"
Inspiring critical thinking, although clearly not accomplished by this post, is why, in general, people should be pressured about their religion as well as other opinions as well that influence political thinking
[–]Dan_Acronym -1 points0 points1 point 5 months ago

Are the atheists on Reddit angry?
[–]Wordwench 9 points10 points11 points 5 months ago
Well, they are forever alone..
[–]CheekyMunky 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
Okay, that made me laugh.
[–]breadrising -1 points0 points1 point 5 months ago
There are just as many angry/happy atheists as angry/happy theists. Sometimes we are angry when it comes to certain things that our largely religious culture tends to undermine, other times we're happy, and other times we're completely indifferent.
People show emotions; it doesn't matter if you're theist, atheist, Replublican, Democrat, a tennis player, or like nachos.
[–]adapt2me 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
It just seems that most atheist I come across has hatred in their actions and language. Also, it seems most are always trying to get people to rethink their beliefs. Why don't they just mind their own?
We'd love to mind our own business, except for the fact that:
We'rehe most distrusted/unliked demographic in the US simply because of our non-belief in a god(s)
The rights of people are at stake when religious zealots (not all religious people mind you, but unfortunately, a lot of the outspoken ones) are trying to limit the use of contraceptives, ban gay marriage, and make abortions illegal.
Rick Santorum can get on stage and basically say "Women that get raped and get pregnant shouldn't complain, they recieved a gift from God," as well as other elitist, supremist, bigotted, hateful bullshit and all the while he's still winning in the polls simply because he has "Christian values."
People say we can't be good, live good lives, or even have a meaningful life simply because we aren't religious.
Our school system is in clear danger of allowing Creationism to be taught in the schools instead of evolution, which is a fact and a basic staple of biology. You don't learn evolution; you won't learn biology. Its scary to think that so many people could care less about the education of their children with garbage so close to being allowed in schools (and is already allowed in some schools).
So, honestly we would love to mind our own business. I'm a big advocate of "live and let live." Unfortunately, we are the ones who are not being left alone, and when the future of our rights/children is at stake, you're right that I'm going to say something about it.
[–]adapt2me -1 points0 points1 point 5 months ago
since when did evolution become fact? and you're worried about your children, all the while supporting abortion? marriage is sanctified by God, therefore gays dont have the right to marry. No one is trying to limit the use of contraceptives. The Obama admin. is trying to get everyone to pay for everyone elses contraception, abortifacients and whatever else they can think of in "Womens Health" as an excuse for big pharma companys to make losts of money of the new outrageous implants and ru48 pills.
since when did evolution become fact?
Evolution has been proven to be verifiable on all testable accounts. Saying that Evolution is "just a theory" is also the same as saying gravity or germ theory are "just theories." The science definition for theory is not the same as just sitting down one day, thinking of something, and writing it down. It involves a lot of testing and evidence before it becomes an accepted theory. You can read a lot more on it here since I'm no expert.
and you're worried about your children, all the while supporting abortion?
People who are "pro-choice" are not supporting abortion; they are supporting the right for the woman to choose what to do with her own body.
marriage is sanctified by God, therefore gays dont have the right to marry.
Well I don't believe your God exists and neither does a large community of people throughout the world, not even including those who believe in other gods. I'm sorry but just because you believe something does not mean it becomes mandated for everyone to follow it, especially when there is no evidence that any of it is actually true. If I said the purple flying dinosaur told me we must never eat pizza again for it is banned by his supremeness, you would probably ask for some hard evidence of that claim. Its my right to believe in the purple flying dinosaur, but it is not my right to inflict upon other's freedoms, no matter how much faith I have that it is true.
Here is Rick Santorum giving his stance on birth control. Whether or not birth control should be covered through health care is a different issue altogether, but the downright eliminating the right to use them is wrong.
Well im glad you're for Santorum. And with regards to evolution, you are saying that you came from a monkey and that you're ok with that? If so then that alone shows your lack of mental capacity.
Its my right to believe in the purple flying dinosaur, but it is not my right to inflict upon other's freedoms, no matter how much faith I have that it is true.
So why make me pay for a womans contraceptives?
Yeah, we're done here.
I figured as much. Thanks for trying though.
I just honestly can't tell if you're trolling or not. If you really want to know, I'm more than happy to do my best to explain things to you, or at least forward you to some great, reliable sources. However, if you're simply trying to get aggravation out of me, I'm not going to put anymore effort into it.
[–]snirol 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago*
A Christian lady who once randomly started debating me in a cafe literally made this face when I tried to correct her claim that Darwin had renounced his theory evolution on his deathbed. When I said that had never happened she kept saying "His children were there. His children were there, HIS CHILDREN WERE THERE, etc." (basically, plugs ears: "LALALALALALALALA")
Edit: This was also the moment I decided that I needed to be much better informed about my atheism. I'd never really been indoctrinated as a child. Went to sunday school and a catholic school, but it never really sank in as more than a story. I went out and bought a King James Bible, God Is Not Great, The God Delusion, On Liberty, On The Horrors and Absurdities of Religion, etc. I wanted to be able to hold my own the next time someone decided they wanted to publicly condemn me to hell while I'd simply been minding my own business.
[–]westyfield 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
If you want to give Christianity a fair chance, the KJV is not the way to go. It's chock full of translation errors and deliberate archaisms.
[–]snirol 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
I imagine the archaisms weren't deliberate... it's an old book. Unless you mean something other than how I took your comment. What would you recommend I read instead/in addition to?
[–]westyfield 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
No, they are intentional. It was largely designed by a committee, and one of the things they wanted was for it to sound impressive and poetic when read (partly to lend authority, and partly to make it more memorable). So they used phrases that were regarded as archaic, as well as thees and thous when you was in standard use (similarly for words ending in -eth when -s was common). There were some good books published on the subject recently, for the 400th anniversary of the King James Version.
With regard to alternatives; I use a Holman Christian Standard Bible. It's a pretty solid, easy-to-understand translation, and I'd recommend it. The English Standard Version and the New Revised Standard Version are also apparently quite good. Basically I'd stay away from the KJV - it's interesting and historically important, but there are (in my opinion) better translations out there.
Cool, thanks! One reason I bought it was to read with my Blake and Milton. I figured it would help me appreciate them even more. I'll check out one of those that you recommended as well.

Seriously, r/atheism? Even people sharing our beliefs (or lack thereof) do this, all the time. It's funny that in the course of trying to portray all Christians as stupid, primitive people and ourselves as lone bastions of intellectual superiority that we some how seem to come out looking like assholes. I wonder why that is.
[–]auntie_eggma 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago
I wonder why you seem to consider being an asshole as an equal crime to the things we're being assholes about. Smacks of tone trolling if you ask me. "gah atheists why can't you be NICE AND POLITE about how religious folk keep trying to take over every aspect of your lives?"
[–]Dyssomniac 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
No, it's more 'How about we not become the people we deride?' than anything else. Not EVERY Christian 'nope, nope, nope's when you question their beliefs - some of them hold their ground quite nicely in debates, far better than some of the teenage atheists on Reddit. And while we're at it, when was this post ever about some religious folk being assholes or trying to take over every aspect of our lives? Last time I looked, it was about "What Christians do when somebody questions their beliefs". So, please, stop putting words in my mouth.
It's just agitating that r/atheism is developing into r/christianbashing, which seems (at least to me) counter to the underlying idea that we're superior because we do not have theistic beliefs (which I don't think we always are).
[–]auntie_eggma 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
In order to become the people we deride, we would have to constantly try to pass laws requiring scientific education in churches, banning individual prayers, threatening the bodily autonomy of one gender, policing people's private sexual activity with other consenting adults, etc.
I am so fucking tired of people equating making fun of people with these things. So atheists are disdainful and mocking of religious beliefs. So that's not nice. So fucking what? People don't have to be nice. And you don't have to like that people aren't being nice. You have every right to criticise people for not being nice if you want. But to equate not being nice with all of the things I mentioned above is fucking asinine. You cannot honestly believe the two are equal.

[–]Nightmathzombie 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
I would attempt to debate Christians more if they would actually listen when I suggest possibilities. I hold my viewpoint pretty strongly, but I like to think if someone presents a logical argument I can at least consider it. Sadly I find most christians are simply unable (or unwilling?) to remove god from any argument and therefore cannot (or will not) actually "process" my argument. I am willing to view/hear YOUR logical arguments with the supposition that god exists, or that the bible is true but if you are unwilling/unable to view MY arguments with the supposition that god does NOT exist, or that the bible is merely a historical document then we can never truly have honest debate. My view of the universe is open to change, but the argument must stand up to logic and/or evidence.

One of these two things apologizes for perceived homophobic remarks.

Then they tell u to respect their beliefs although they say ur stupid for thinking there is no god.
[–]Nightmathzombie 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
They can call me stupid all they want...what I do find MILDLY offensive is the threat (and the look of self righteous pleasure on their face) when they say that I will burn for an eternity.
[–]Msmuffysmom 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I'm very offend when I tell someone I'm an atheist and they tell me not to make fun of their Belfies when I hadn't even said anything about it
[–]Nightmathzombie 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
My favorite is oh, "Atheism is a belief."
Mine is " how do u explain blah blah blah"
Ha ha ha! yeah, I know THAT one..."My uncle WASN'T a monkey, maybe YOURS was, but not mine."
Or I love this one "is it because ur gay? R u gay? Cuz if ur gay then u can still have a religion"
NO, your uncle was child molester! You DID say he's a priest right?
I actually think that when someone acts like that it's because deep inside they are already aware of the ridiculousness of their belief, but can't reconcile it within themselves because they've been so indoctrinated against questioning their own faith. The resulting internal guilt that they've been taught to have over-rides their intellectual honesty and they teach themselves to try and ignore the conflicting ideas within their minds. Faith = a blender for the intellect.
True. I also hate that I have to keep it in the closet from my parents cuz if I tell them I will be forced to church. And I really don't want that.
[–]Msmuffysmom 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
Or how they say do not judge then they turn around and judge gays and ppl of other religion.
Yeah, because being forced into church will somehow convince you of the existence of god... they really DO belief in magic!
Yes they do. But I don't want to be forced to go to church and end up hating ppl of religion.
LMAO yup "I'll pass on going to church, I don't need to be reminded of just how crazy you all really are".
[–]graphicgravy -3 points-2 points-1 points 5 months ago
Depends on the Christian, imo, but still....majority yes.
[–]h2sbacteria -4 points-3 points-2 points 5 months ago
