I imagine there are hundreds of 14 years olds out there who think being a sniper is like being some kind of super awesome action hero. "I want to be a sniper!!"

Sure thing, try it out. Go into the woods, lay down and stay still for 2 days. Then go bang and come back. Bonus if you can convince a friend to come with binoculars, but you cannot speak with them except sparingly and in whispers.

Snipers often wait for hours before they make one shot. Factor in wind, bullet lag, and drop and sniping almost becomes like a math problem.

[–]deadstump 29 points30 points ago

In the Iraq war snipers did much less of this infiltrate and wait and much more of the go to counter force roll where they would counter ambush. Or they would set up as a defensive position again to ambush the attackers. In both cases they would be much more likely to engage multiple targets rapidly. There are also the designated marksman who would act as a counter sniper for patrols, and where as not a sniper by definition they share many of the attributes.

And just as a note: I am no no way saying that snipers do not engage in the stalk, one shot, one kill, and out type of activity.

TC's right. I've played every COD since COD4 and noticed how maps are getting smaller and smaller, with less cover/grass fields/buildings/sniper spots. If IW/Treyarch are going on an anti-camping campaign, then they are also forcing out quality "marksmanship" (quotes because, hey its a video game). But now it just seems like COD is a host of kids jumped up on caffeine running around with SMG's. It's true what they said.. "No matter how much you like COD, once you go Battlefield you cannot really go back."

But most of the time, they just get sent out to sit in the woods for 3 days watching cows in a field whilst pissing in a bag for training and combat-readiness (and because, well, they've got to do something).

Though it reminds me of a time I was talking to a Royal Engineer who said when there was no work to do, they weren't allowed 'time off', so would disassemble and reassemble vehicles for practice/morale/fun/betterthandoingnothing. That was in Afghanistan so not a pretend warzone either.

[–]Bob_Munden 2 points3 points ago

Snipers often wait hours for one shot, but that shot authorization isn't guaranteed, you can sit in a bush for a week, have sights on target and be denied the shot.

[–]LayzeeH 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I met a former Navy Seal sniper instructor a few weeks ago, and he told me about all of the crazy factors that must be taken into consideration when taking a shot. He said that the way you pull the trigger can have an effect on the flight path of the bullet - jerk the trigger, and the extra vibration from that can alter the flight path of the bullet. Also the humidity must be taken into account. When it's more humid, there is more hydrogen in the air than there normally is. Because hydrogen is the lightest element on the periodic table, the air will be less dense, making it easier for the bullet to fly through the air. Additionally, the internal temperature of the round is a huge factor. The Seal said that when he was in sniper school, they were often made to hike up to the top of a cliff on freezing days, and then fire one round at a target below from a cold weapon. He started to carry his one round in his glove to keep it warm on the hike up, and he ended up hitting 3-4 inches higher on the target than anyone else.

TL;DR Navy Seal sniper instructor confirms that sniping is more math and science than simply shooting.

Game developers also like to highlight AK-47 as superior to modern rifles, which is far from true.

[–]dtza 226 points227 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, the AK-47 is generally given the most recoil yet most damage of all the assault rifles in the game, which somewhat correlates with real life. The thing is that engagement distances in games like CoD are rarely over 50m, so recoil isn't as big a factor as it would be in longer distances, giving the AK-47 an edge over other ARs.

[–]Sloppy1sts 98 points99 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, most recoil doesn't mean much when there's barely any to begin with. I've shot an AR-15 (civilian semi-auto M16) and the recoil, while not crazy, is clearly more than enough to make holding the sights on a target while firing full-auto very difficult (No, I'm not claiming to be a firearms expert [though I do own a fair amount of guns, myself] but I'm sure any veterans can verify this).

[–]StarWolfe 160 points161 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't soldiers almost never use full-auto?

[–]Sloppy1sts 118 points119 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. Even with an M4 capable of F/A fire, you nearly always fire in short bursts or semi-auto.

[–]5thAccount-LostPWs 224 points225 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In my entire career in the Marines, there were only two times I used full auto. Once in combat suppressing fire for myself charging towards the enemy, and the only other time was doing training with FBI SWAT teams that had firing a mag on full auto part of their basic shooting drills.

So it's very true, you almost never use full auto. The M16s that our grunts in the Marines get don't even have full auto as a firing mode. The M4s do, and with some training it's definitely within the realm of possibility to stay on target while firing a full mag on full auto. You wouldn't be any further than 25 meters away, though.

[–]whyoulittle 204 points205 points ago

Did you just go check, or do some math? One is much cooler than the other.

[–]5thAccount-LostPWs 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah it takes no time at all, so it's easy enough to just get used to the way it feels when it's firing and control the stream of bullets.

In the context of what I was talking about earlier, I was giving out about 7 or 8 round bursts directed towards the guys shooting at me. Went through a few mags... It's damn near impossible to hit anyone while you are running and on full auto, so I was just keeping their heads down basically.

Edit: Found a video with someone laying it on with the M4.

[–]razqel[!] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Curious, would faking suppression fire (via sound system or shooting blanks) have the same psychological effect on the enemy? Or do they actually need to feel the bullets impacting near them to know to take cover?

My dad (a great marksman) owns an AR-15, there is something called bump firing, where you rock your finger on the trigger, making the rifle fire fast. My dad is still quite accurate when using this method. Yes this is on your hip, but it is still accurate at high fire rate :)

[–]Sloppy1sts 12 points13 points ago

Ah I see. Then perhaps those people should keep their mouths (or keyboards) shut on the issue until they do proper research or have first-hand experience firing the rifle platform. Video games will always fictionalize firearm performance in an attempt to keep the game fair for the players. In real life, firearm designers are not trying to keep it fair for the enemy.

[–]StruckingFuggle 4 points5 points ago

One of these days, a game needs to have an "unbalanced" mode where guns have as accurate a performance as can be modeled, for better or worse. Just because it'd be interesting.

[–]adlp 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]Magnon 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's more that in games bullet caliber often dictates damage, and with most modern rifles firing 5.56 the 7.62 of AKs comes out ahead in damage.

[–]singularissententia 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Although it may seem counter-intuitive at first, having a higher caliber and more muzzle velocity doesn't necessarily dictate killing power.
It's somewhat well known that the 5.56 is actually more lethal in most cases than the 7.62.
The reason is that the 5.56, upon entering a body, will tumble, which will transfer a lot of energy to the target.
However, the 7.62 has so much energy, that it will often go right through the target, which is actually less preferred because less energy is actually transferred.
I can't recall the caliber at the moment, but rifle manufacturers in Russia actually recognized this and created a new, smaller caliber for a newer rifle that would be comparable to the 5.56.
Of course, despite what I said, there are other factors, like armor and cover. But if we're talking just straight up, a bullet hitting a body, the 7.62 is usually at a disadvantage.

[–]Benjaminrynti 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The 5.56 won't tumble like you think.

All military ammunition is ball ammunition (Full Metal Jacket). FMJs will punch through a human body and keep on going. Things get interesting when you add gear, clothing, etc., to the mix.

Hollow Points or Jacketed Hollow Points will enter a body, expand, and transfer a great majority of its kinetic energy into the body.

The caliber you're probably thinking of is 5.45x39mm which the AK-74 (yes, 74) is chambered in.

A 7.62 is not at disadvantage either. It is a bigger bullet and it will create a larger wound in a human body. 5.56 NATO and 7.62x39mm are well capable of killing, but the advantage of stopping power goes to the 7.62x39mm.

Although the 5.45x39mm has better terminal ballistics.

[–]singularissententia 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah yes, the round for the AK-74 was exactly what I was thinking of, thank you.
However, the Wikipedia page seems to support my claim. Although there is still apparently much to debate on the matter, it seems that, if you ignore irregularities due to shoddy manufacturing, the 5.56 does exhibit a consistent, engineered tendency to "yaw," as the article puts it, which would pretty much allow it to match the energy transfer of the 7.62, but still allow for better control.
Disclaimer: Despite trying to argue for my side, I have to admit when I read the part where it basically says "The 5.56 does great when you shoot them in the head and the chest the right way" I had a "Well no shit..." moment. So, I suppose take the military info with a grain of salt.
Edit: forgot to add the link

[–]owdee 20 points21 points ago

Simply because the gun design is 125 years old means it should be less deadly? It shoots the same 12GA shell as any modern pump-action or autoloading shotgun. Shotgun technology for manual actions hasn't progressed as much as you may think in the last 100 years.

[–]Benjaminrynti 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also considering that there are modern re-makes of the 1887 design. Made with better steel and parts they'll be able to handle some of the more powerful modern shotgun loads.

It's not like they actually stab in MW, they just slice. Through clothing, body armor, guns, boots, helmets. Knifing in BF is so much more satisfying.

The new takedown animations are really cathartic, but I miss the old school super tense knife fights of BF2, where you and some poor bastard would square off in an alleyway with your blades out and then get pummeled into the dirt by a random artillery strike one of you comes out with a well-deserved kill.

[–]Andrewticus04 98 points99 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've never understood that. Somewhere along the lines the term "camping" got conflated with sniping.

Camping is hiding in a narrow corridor, waiting for people to come by, so you can gun/knife them down when they pass you. The only strategy to beat campers is to anticipate the camping and fire first, or avoiding them altogether. This is not fun.

Sniping is sitting in an area that allows you to see a great deal of the map, which forces players to react by either counter-sniping or flanking the sniper's position - you know, like in real life. That's why it's fun.

Seriously, newbs these days!

Your definition of fun may differ from someone else's.

When I play a game like CoD, I enjoy chaotic crazy battles, explosions, smoke grenades, lots of killing, lots of dying, K/D ratio be damned. Nice and personal.

It can be quite annoying to play that kind of game and have someone sit in a dark corner somewhere and constantly pick me out with a sniper rifle. It's so impersonal. I understand it comes with its own rewards and I won't blame anyone for playing like that but it makes the kind of game I play less fun.

Each to his own.

[–]kettu 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I hate this because of their ability to one-shot. Sure it's logical for snipers to one-shot but I'd love to see every sniper to be able to one-shot. MW 3's Dragunov? A joke if you ask me. I don't bother using snipers in MW 3 because the only sniper I like (RSASS) is so inferior to other snipers...

I always laugh when people say "camping snipers," even though I've said it myself on several occasions.

Well yeah, that's what a sniper does. If he is harassing you then you must out-snipe him, or find another method to bypass his over watch or take him out.

Part of the reason I quit MW2 entirely was everyone running around with the Intervention sniper-rifle shotgun.

I don't find it that bad in MW3. MW3 is actually way more balanced. Quick scoping is an annoying way to die but often someone would have easily got me an SMG and I turn on em because they missed a shot quick scoping.

For clarity, "sniping" and "camping" are two different things to me. If there's a guy with a Barrett .50 covering a huge open area and he shoots me from across the map, that's a good shot and a clean kill. What I can't stand are the asswads that back up into a corner of a room and hose down everything that comes through the door with the MP9.

What's more, glitchers should be ass-raped by a million donkeys. Them and hackers.

[–]DoubleChocolate 6 points7 points ago

Depends on the game mode. Campers like that are really annoying in deathmatch, yeah, and even worse if you're supposed to be assaulting in demolition. However, if I have to defend an objective, better believe I'm camping the hell out of that doorway with my bullet hose.

Two different developers. IW brought it forward from MW2 to MW3 but Treyarch removed it from Black Ops.

I usually camp when I snipe. I just plop down the old motion sensor nearby, set up a claymore, and snipe whoever comes near me, using my trusty Five Seven with extended mags for close range. I was never a big fan of quick-scoping, and I find it funny when people bitch at me for "hard-scoping". It's not like snipers were designed in that game for people to sprint in the middle of the map and not even use the powerful zoom and aim that it has...

[–]dhvl2712 33 points34 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A lot of people will tell you that you've made a great choice but let me tell you the truth: you may not enjoy Battlefield at all. The game has jets, huge maps, excellent team features and beautiful graphics. But, if you're buying on PC then you'll need an absolutely amazing PC and will have to deal with Origin. If you're buying on Xbox, the graphics won't be that great, and the game will feel very, very sluggish after CoD.

Also, Yes the game has jets and all sorts of vehicles but you have to share them with 12 other people, 24 on PC. So don't expect to be in a vehicle all the time. Yes the game has a lot of interesting team based features but don't expect your teammates to coordinate with you all the time. Often you'll start flying a helicopter to the objective, and when you get there all your mates will jump out, leaving you in a helicopter without any weapons. Not all your teammates will be in good positions for you to spawn, and not all your teammates will spot.

And the worst part, is the camping. Often you'll be running for five minutes only to be sniped by some guy far, far away and you'll have no idea where he shot you from. This will happen a lot. So get used to it.

But despite all of this, when you see the "Your team won" screen at the end of a half-hour long battle where you busted your ass providing air support it'll be one of the best feelings you've ever had.

TL;DR: Play Battlefield, but it would be very stupid to sell off MW3.

[–]RedDaggerx 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, on my xbox BF3 experience, people still run around, and I find campers on the objective only, whereas CoD, they're everywhere. Also, I very rarely find long-distance snipers.

But the main reasons I prefer it is that I don't die as frequently, and when I'm bored, I can play some conquest on a large map and screw around with unused vehicles. On CoD, I don't find as much variety.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I never sell video games.

[–]dhvl2712 6 points7 points ago

That's great. You must have an amazing library then. But still, my point is that you shouldn't write off MW3 just yet.

[–]sexlexia_survivor 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I play both. They both have pros and cons as you said. I end up playing MW3 more because I always tell myself it will be 'quick' but still end up sitting there for 2 hours.

Both have problems with the spawning at times, and campers, and snipers. The only time I get pissed at either game is when I am sucking or there is a lag, niether of which is the particular game's fault.

[–]tintin47 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Three things:

You don't need an amazing PC. You can get medium graphics at 50 FPS with a relatively outdated card if you don't run it at 1080p and you are judicious about where you are spending your processing power in terms of graphics.

There are plenty of maps where vehicles are easy to get. Oman, Wake, Firestorm, and Caspian all have at least 2 tanks per side, a heli, and jets, in addition to AA and sometimes LAVs. You can easily get 20 people in vehicles if you want.

The PC version supports up to 32 v 32. :)

[–]_Gingy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't play Demolition on Treyarch's game if you really don't like getting spawn killed. I never really had a problem with getting spawn killed. With the new respawn system it spawns you on the opposite side of the map a good portion of the time. It also depends on what game mode you play and if you're teammates are good.
