I like that this image makes fair comparisons to current stars and former stars.

Instead of the typical Justin Bieber is less good than Hendrix. You don't say? Thanks, people that don't know how to talk about music.

Exactly. Guess what, there have been manufactured pop stars as long as there has been popular music! If music from the past seems better, it's because we stopped listening to the bad stuff.

This reminds me of last Christmas, I was back home and my little teenage cousins were lamenting about how music was so much better in the 90s and how "lucky" I was to grow up then. I had to remind them that for every Nirvana, there were 10 Shaggys or Baha Men. We never did find out who let those dogs out...

Don't worry, Shaggy seemed to do a pretty good job of leaving himself out of his own songs, considering at least the two songs I've heard only seem to feature like 30 seconds of his Jamaican bullfrog impersonation.

I wouldn't even say Bieber is "manufactured" in the way of, say, Danity Kane or something. He was discovered through his own YouTube channel, if I'm not mistaken.

[–]TheBigYello1isTheSun 145 points146 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think he's manufactured in a sense seeing as how he is actually an incredibly talented kid who learned to play quite a few instruments from sheer practice at a very young age, not to mention he was vocally talented, however, upon being discovered the industry turned him into a pop star rather than furthering him as a serious musician. So when I consider how such a talented prodigy turned into a tween crooner repeating the words "Baby" in skinny jeans, it's easy to hate the kid, and the industry in general..

[–]rootR 96 points97 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The bieber hate is so silly. So what? He and a team of writers and producers pinpointed a very lucrative sound. I'm sure the guy rehearses multiple times a day and works hard. I don't like the music... but why would I? It's not marketed towards me. It's manufactured, duh. So is, to some extent or another, every band that's topped charts. They all had a very industry-knowledgeable team behind them to craft a sound and image. Shit, even the almighty Nirvana was manufactured. They were marketed by the label to a certain segment.

[–]claytoncash 35 points36 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Being marketed does not mean being manufactured. I give an example: Tool.

A very successful band who has maintained complete control over their creative process and end product. They (like the other examples) are marketed, though very little compared to other acts of the same level of success, but this does not mean their art was manufactured.

Beiber? Manufactured. Not that there is anything necessarily wrong with this - people are going to listen to what they want, and the industry is going to try to make money by providing the public a palatable product.

Not every big band is manufactured, though.

[–]DrexlSpivey420 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nirvana was NOT manufactured. They were the first ones to set a bar for what became popular. Then out of success, bands from the area also became popular (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains) and bands that had a similar sound (Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, Janes Addiction) ALSO became popular. These bands all existed in one form or another way before the success of Nevermind or Ten. Then around the mid-nineties we started to see MANUFACTURED bands that only existed due to the success of grunge/alternative rock like Candlebox, Puddle of Mudd, Staind,Days of the New, 3 Doors Down and of course the critically acclaimed NICKELBACK. These bands were manufactured purely on cashing in from grunge. There is no early Justin Bieber demo tape from the early 00's in his humble beginnings where only the hipsters knew about him. One year (2010) it was BOOM LISTEN TO THIS SHIT PRETEENS and BAM success. This is what makes him manufactured and what makes Nirvana REAL. Other than that you'll find Nirvana and Justin Bieber to be quite similar......

[–]DanBresson 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Shit I don't care what anyone has to say about pop music, if those people can make that much money off of something they love, good for them. As an edm producer, if someone offered me some retarded amount of money to write a beat for a pop artist I would be more than glad to.

Who was the manufactured pop star in Beethoven's day?

[–]aradraugfea 446 points447 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You just listed him.

He was the son of a minor noble taught from a very young age to play and play well, he was groomed for a career as a composer back when you were likely still toilet training. If anything, he's probably more manufactured than Beiber, as Beiber didn't have ridiculous money behind him until his teens. Back in the day, if you wanted to make music at all, guess what, you HAD to be manufactured. Your normal guy on the street couldn't afford to quit doing real work long enough to become a musician, and you can kiss the thought of getting music lessons goodbye unless your goal was to be the timely equivalent of the guys who play subways. And there weren't agents going around subways looking for 'the next big thing.' There were other nobles looking for nobles to play their parties.

[–]DeliciousMoments 48 points49 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No doubt he had plenty of monetary support (and his father was a notoriously strict music teacher), but doesn't erase the fact that he's one of the most influential and brilliant figures in Western music. Even people who don't "know" Beethoven doubtless would recognize the 5th or the 9th Symphonies if they heard them.

Before recorded music, ALL music was live music, so there was not actually a huge shortage of people who could perform on instruments. Most children of wealth learned some kind of musical skill at a young age, and most of them never made anything great and have faded into obscurity. Beethoven's popularity would not have persisted for over 200 years if he was just another rich kid. He was ludicrously talented and visionary.

How music was created and disseminated 200 years ago is so drastically different from how it's done now days, it's not really fair to say he was "manufactured" in the exact same way your Biebers and Keshas are.

[–]Sloppy1sts 197 points198 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except, you know, Beethoven was absurdly talented.

[–]banzai33 248 points249 points ago

[–]ElMoog 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You do know that there a huge different between having a nice voice, and being able to compose whole symphonies in your head, while being deaf?

You cannot manufacture this kind of talent in the same way that you cannot manufacture the likes of Newton or Einstein.

[–]Say_Ocean 128 points129 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Okay let's be real though: millions can sing, but there aren't too many Beethovens that literally change music for hundreds of years.

[–]sedsnewoldg 149 points150 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The point is not many were given the chance.

I'd also challenge your last point just based on sample size. Fewer given the opportunity to change music, so one persons affect is easier to observe as more significant. If you look at the rapid progression of music over the last 100 years you'd be able to find many people who had drastic changes, but because of a more diversified "market", the changes are less pronounced and observable today.

[–]stryder3323 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And I guess, then, the problem is that we don't have a current-day Beethoven to be made into a popular star.

[–]Say_Ocean 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah. I would honestly say that there are Bachs and Beethovens out there potentially, or at least definitely Bachs, but the way contemporary music like that is nowadays it's never going to take even 1% of the market share.

[–]stryder3323 21 points22 points ago

[–]sanph 2 points3 points ago*

Bachs and Beethovens out there potentially, or at least definitely Bachs,

I dont understand that phrase. You make it sound like "bachs" would be more common, which implies its because Bach was on a lower compositional/musical level. Bach was the grandfather of harmony (Beethoven's own words) and he mastered the art of counterpoint and brought it to its apex. Beethoven consistently sought out his work in order to learn from it. There is a story of him desperately seeking out an original manuscript of Bach's Mass in B Minor during his time composing his Missa Brevis.

Mozart also referred to Bach as "the only teacher I've ever learned anything from". Bach had been dead for years before Mozart was even born.

Brahms also encouraged his contemporaries to study Bach because "in Bach, you will find everything."

It is not a stretch to say, that among all the old great masters, Bach was probably the leading figure in terms of how much influence he had over music theory and over the composers that followed.

[–]sordfysh 35 points36 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Beethoven didn't sing. He produced music. Singers don't change music, producers do. Here is your modern day Bach/Beethoven:

Before I got to know a lot of musicians, I didn't realize what when into it. It's not a field of auteurs. There are songwriters, composers, producers, engineers, orchestrators, and that doesn't even get into performance. Maybe increasing specialization has something to do with it.

[–]banzai33 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Did you read aradraufea's post? Millions don't get that either.

Putting someone's success down to "talent" is usually a mixture of making excuses and/or wishful thinking.

It's a fraction of what you may need, and a far more common trait than the rest of the requirements, such as upbringing, access to the things you need, connections, immense perseverance and luck.

What exactly is "talent" supposed to be, anyway? where does it come from? It's not magic.

[–]fodrox04 58 points59 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Absurdly talented or willing to challenge the idea of compositions? He was very talented and will be remembered for a long time, but what sets him apart from other composers isn't his talent, but the fact that he was willing to challenge the rules that compositions had followed for a hundred years. He single handedly paved the way for the transition from the Classical to the Romantic period by saying "Fuck the system; I'm writing whatever the fuck I want." and he did and it was good.

TL;DR Beethoven wasn't so much talented as he was a rebel. There were other composers that were 'better' (in terms of composing classical pieces), but NO ONE had the balls to do what he did and that's why we remember him to this day

[–]rdiss 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's pretty much what I think every time I listen to the last movement of the Hammerklavier. Fugues are old hat, but fuck you, I'm motherfucking Beethoven and I'm going to write a motherfucking fugue.

Oh, and "I'm deaf, too." (LVB, not me). I hear so much anger in the 2nd and 4th movements.

[–]Semajal 46 points47 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bieber is talented (not Beethoven levels) but still, he is talented. It takes away from music as a whole with people who insist he has no talent simply because they do not like his music.

[–]Sloppy1sts 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, I agree, the kid can sing. And I think the hate is stupid too. He's writing for 16 year old girls and 16 year old girls are his audience. I could understand hating if 20 and 30 year olds were listening to him.

[–]EquinsuOcha 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's not writing at all. It's written for him, and he is a figurehead of a multi-million dollar marketing machine. It's like saying the Mercedes Benz hood ornament is really powering the car.

[–]coffinoff 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's a good point. Bieber's stuff is generally terrible because he's marketed to an audience with simplistic tastes.

Where as I'm sure the expectation of Beethoven throughout his career was that he would make sophisticated music for a sophisticated audience.

[–]Aiyon 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nobody remembers, because he / she vanished due to their being "manufactured". It's what will eventually happen to people like Bieber. Only it won't happen to him because the internet won't stop talking about how they want him to go away.

The music of a few years ago will always look better that contemporary stuff because we've had time to forget all the shitty and mediocre musics from them and tend to compress the gems that we do remember into a shorter period in our mental time line. This makes it feel like there was a higher density of hits 'back in the day' and that good records now are few and far between by comparison. That said there does seem to be a genuine decline in the average quality of mainstream music or maybe thats just my mental timelining...

I remember reading something about how the royalties from MMMBop have kept Hanson going for years, allowing them to focus solely on their music and not worry about getting kicked from record labels or where their next pay check was coming from.

Their recent stuff is actually pretty good, definitely a lot better than a lot of the popular stuff from their genre at the moment.

I'm actually having a hard time thinking of a single Jonas brothers song. Honestly when I think Jonas brothers, I just think Miley Cyrus' counter parts. And I can't think of any Miley Cyrus songs either.. Why are these people famous?

[–]IDriveAVan 82 points83 points ago

It's so weird how people shit on how today's musicians for just pressing play on a Macbook or being media created cookie cutter shock monkeys who autotune everything, and yet one of the most hated bands ever is a couple of siblings who play their own instruments and write their own songs.

[–]plinky4 81 points82 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think anybody hated Hanson.

It was just millions of teenage boys who thought they were straight, and then Taylor happened and suddenly nobody was really sure. Inevitably you're going to get weird reactions when you confuse people like that.

[–]LifeFailure 17 points18 points ago

Is it wrong that I read "weird reactions" as "weird erections"? No? Okay, move along, people.

The Grateful Dead used the phrase MMMbop in "Not Fade Away" and they toured for like 40 years.

That shit is gold.

[–]geenaleigh 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. Their newest studio album is very catchy. I saw them while they were touring for it it was a great show. Beyond that its hard to not like these guys. The moment their first label tried to bend them into some boy band they walked away, did their own thing and eventually opened their own label and funded their own album. They clearly care about what they're doing and put their hearts into it.

Yeah that's a far more obvious connection I feel. Sure, all three of them beat their famous singer girlfriends/wives, but Ike didn't dance and sing like Bobby did and Chris does.

[–]Platypuskeeper 4 points5 points ago

Yeah, just an authentic 14.4 sound was a bit hard for me to find. Most were just mislabeled 56.6 or 28.8 sounds. Kids these days just don't know their modems.

The onslaught for skrillex really will never end. Am I the only one who thinks he really got people into dub step and helped other bands flourish who would otherwise probably not be known?

[–]mossyskeleton 106 points107 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think this particular reference is funny whether you like Skrillex or not... it really isn't offensive or anything.

And people hate on dubstep for the same reason they hate on hipsters: it's different, it's weird, and people who like it claim to be cooler than the people who don't like it. That's a recipe for nerd-hate.

Also, it's a bandwagon thing. A lot of people are jumping on the dubstep bandwagon, and with every bandwagon situation, there are people who jump off of the bandwagon when they find out everyone else is jumping on the bandwagon. Plus the people who didn't get on the bandwagon on the first place in order to stand at the sideline scoffing at everyone on the bandwagon in order to maintain their own sense of superiority.

[–][deleted] 68 points69 points ago

[–]SuperSoggyCereal 4 points5 points ago

If you mean he made people get into a certain type of dubstep, then yes.

But to be fair, the people who like the music he makes probably never would have liked actual dubstep (or much electronic music in general) if it weren't for him.

This. I get that he was a bad person, but Ike was one of the most important innovators in R&B and early rock 'n' roll. Chris Brown is a pretty good singer and dancer and I enjoy some of his songs, but he's ultimately just a disposable, transitory industry-pushed face.
