I have come to find that I write my best papers when I have the least amount of time in which to write them.

[–]appropriate-username 412 points413 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Amen. This is why I write all my papers after they are due.

Some say he once won a duel by letting his opponent shoot first and then returned fire by crushing him with the weight of his massive balls...

All we know is, he's called appropriate-username

Well, you're my new favorite novelty account.

[–]okmkz 10 points11 points ago

I find your novelty account to be shallow and pedantic.

[–]iverific 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not as shallow and pedantic as this meatloaf I'm having.

[–]I_BREAK_REDDIT 10 points11 points ago

Hm, yes. Meatloaf.

[–]retmit 5 points6 points ago

The appreciation that Reddit has for slightly surrealist responses makes one wonder how an account such as novelty_stig_intro has not been used to good effect before. Whether this will sink or swim comes down to can the user work within a very strict formula to deliver consistent laughs? It's been done before, and so far the ability seems to be there, but is this a novelty that can be sustained month in month out? Let us hope that this account has plenty of creativity with its intros, it could be a massive hit.

Often times I've made a genuine attempt to write a decent paper while not under pressure of some kind, it doesn't seem to work. I find that days of stress leading up to the paper and an imminent deadline produces the right brain chemistry to activate intelligent turbo mode.

[–]Captain_Generous 23 points24 points ago

I do that with porn. Begin fapping, stop, check a link. Go fap for another 5 minutes. Check a few more links. Continue this for about an hour before I finish up.

This is a trick though. Do it enough times, and your body becomes used to lasting longer than 3 seconds. Now I can go 6 seconds. No, but seriously. It works great of lasting long. Just dont let your erection go down.

Wait, this isnt /r/advicemasturbating . Sorry.

I'm okay with this. Is it going to offer advice for masturbation or pictures of penises with colorful backgrounds and captions?

[–]Captain_Generous 8 points9 points ago

I cant promise there wont be ictures of penises with colorful backgrounds and captions..But ideally we will stick to advice on masturbating.

just alternate pics of penises, with then NSFW women pics thus confusing the penis while the person faps, and then hopefully improving the stamina between flaccid and erect. (going on the west compton theory of fapping)

Junior year. Philosophy of religion. The professor said "just get those weekly papers into me whenever." The only hard deadline was the last day of class. I wrote about 30 pages of all the course assignments in 48 hours of straight work powered by red bull and fear. A- in the class.

The best is in a speech class. We spent the whole last month of class "preparing for a final." Got up the day of and BS-ed the whole thing reading off of a couple notes I wrote on my hand. Told the teacher I forgot my transcript at my house and that I'd hand it back to her within 2 hours. Just got home and typed up everything I say.

Got an A in the class and felt like a motherfucking god for a day

[–]mrcnja 1 point2 points ago

I think it's more because there is no time to get distracted, so you pour 100% of your entire being into pumping out gold.

Basically what that means is if you could maintain this level of concentration for the long-term, you would be collecting your Nobel prize in a year.

Damn you Reddit!

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe this is exactly how Nobel prize winners hold themselves all of the time. So instead of sprinting 100m at the end of the semester, they are aways sprinting at at that pace, putting them at 100km of progress per year instead of just 200m like lazy college senior.

Third year English: wrote a one hour presentation on the trickster element in Native American (Aboriginal) culture throughout B.C. and the interior. Started at 2am, drank a pot of coffee, a pot of tea, and dropped about 8 pharmated. Did my final draft at 6am, and revised, had it ready for 7:30, slept for 1.5 hours then went to the 9 A.M. class. Got an A+ and told the teacher about having it done a few hours before... she said, "You didn't tell me that," "but it was true!", "no, really, you did not just tell me that." That's how most of my work got done in third and fourth year English and History. Needless to say, I took my degree and worked for a call center for 5 years there after in the front lines of tech support; these skills came in handy when they released XP in August 2001, and we were not trained on anything about it until October (the trainers were stuck across the border due to 911).

I typed up two 6 paged papers for an AP class I had in high school with a day left. I read 20 pages total from both books, which totaled about 600 pages of reading. I got a 199/200.

I think many teachers who say this don't understand that when we put off a paper until the night before, it's not like we scrap something together in, like, 2 hours. We spend a 10 hour period furiously typing.

[–]rufud 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

this. It's not that I spend less time on it than others that didn't procrastinate. I stay up all night working on it for 10 hours in a row instead of an hour a day for 10 days.

[–]kilgoretroutt 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the reason they say this is because they want you to actually take something away from writing the paper. It's completely possible to write a paper the night before on almost any subject, but I find that if I research at least a few weeks in advance for the paper, then I take away a lot more than improving my bullshitting abilities. It goes back to the whole thing about if you are just going to university for the degree, or if you are going in order to become a more rounded out individual by expanding your mind and abilities.

I remember when back when I took Eng 1A. Our teacher was pretty cool but she was incredibly anal about late papers, not having a rough draft, and outlines. The end project was a 12 page research paper that was worth 30% of our final grade. We were supposed to spend the final 2 months of class writing, editing, and bringing in what we had for peer criticism. It was due the last Thursday that class met by 10pm on Turnitin.com. I started it that morning, went to school for a final in another class, and then finished up my paper. It was turned in at 9:58pm, was only 7 pages, and received a 60%. I had known as soon as i signed up for that class before fall that a research paper was due and that i would not be doing it. (at least not like it was supposed to be done) I did an extra credit essay the week before because it was a short 2 page rewrite of a Orwell short story called 'A Hanging'. I rewrote it and made it about some man guy having sex with a dog. It gave me enough to slack on my research paper and still get a 90% in the class.

TL;DR My power-level is too much for a deadline to handle.

I had a teacher in high school my junior year (this was in the mid 90s) assign a 10 page paper that was due in two weeks... I fiddle and fiddled and fiddled and didn't do it and the day before it was due she went around the class and had each person talk about what they were going to write about... being a generally cocky ass when she got to me I said, "Eh, I got no idea... I haven't started it yet." her response i don't precisely recall but it was along the lines of "This is a serious paper that is a significant portion of your grade, I think you need to take this more seriously." not being smart enough to shut the fuck up at that point I made the remark of "I type at about 120 wpm, if I know what I'm talking out I can spit out a 10 page paper in an hour or so... I'm not concerned." as soon as I saw the look on her face I knew i was right fucked and she said something along the lines of "Then you shouldn't have an issue with yours being required to be at least 40 pages then and believe me I will check every citation."

That was a long long fucking night... I slept through my first two classes but got it turned in, she never forgave me for it either and beat the shit outta me in the paper, I got a b though so I wasn't bitching... they changed up english teachers my senior year and I got her for my senior english as well and when I finally went to get my graduation she was the one handing them out and she flat told me quietly that people like me didn't deserve to pass and if it had been her choice I'd have been failed.

What a bitch. /rude

I wrote a literary analysis on "Taming of the Shrew" for AP English, senior year of high school, that was to be presented by a group of 5 the night before the presentation was to be done. I think I was up till 3 or 4 a.m. which compared to college was not that bad, but for a high school student was torture. The next day, I handed a page to each member, told them to just read what I wrote and ad-lib a little, and so they did. They each started off sounding robotic, but eventually they mixed in a little of their own BS and we had a pretty confrontational discussion with the class over whether the play is sexist or not, so it didn't feel completely unnatural.

At the end of the year, my teacher told the class that, out of all the presentations, the "Shrew" presentation was by far the best, as it actually did analysis in an organized and mature way. I think the discussion over sexism contributed to that observation. I felt redeemed, especially since in the last group presentation I did, the group leader acted cunty when I said I wanted to be leader, and then even my dickless friends in the group voted against me, and the presentation ended up being mediocre (it was on King Lear). And that was a presentation we actually met several times to put together as a group.

Whereas the best presentation in the class was done in one night, the night before...

So while it may be unlikely that you can do anything the night before, it's not impossible, as long as you try.

p.s. the Internet helped.

I've written about four papers literally the day they were due and received As/Bs. Not particularly brilliant work (the assignments were quite simple) - the point is that when teachers use that phrase this is my default reaction. Oooh, we shouldn't understimate your material because it's so challenging and stuff.

Then again, it is a lot easier to finish them at least, like, two days in advance. Saves one many a midnight nope.

I did this throughout my high school career and I still do this for college.

The only time I don't do this is when I have a very big research paper that really needs plenty of time for research.

The teacher liked it so much that he read it aloud to every class he had in the day.

Same, was sitting in class one day and realized a paper was due next period. Teacher obviously wouldn't let me go to the library to write it, so I sat in class and typed the entire paper on my phone, emailed it to myself and ran down to the library to print it. Wound up getting an A on it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago*

You're not pulling a fast one on your teacher. They're not reading these papers thinking, "Wow, they clearly spent weeks on these!" as you dance into the sunset thinking, "Ha, she totally doesn't know I pulled this out of my ass the night before." She knows. She keeps telling the class this because she's hoping one day people will actually use the time they have to develop and refine their ideas, go through multiple drafts, and produce something really well thought out. Instead, the whole class does it the night before thinking they're so clever. She sadly reads through them, seeing all the potential they had and could have fulfilled if everyone had just taken their time and used a healthy process. She marks everyone pretty generously, because...well, these things are always relative to overall class performance. The next year comes and she tells the new class, "This isn't a paper that you can write the night before." Maybe these ones will get it, she thinks wistfully.

Edit: Oops, angered all the students who are up late writing papers for tomorrow. Sorry everyone, I take it back, your professors are fools and you're all geniuses and special snowflakes.

[–]Growlizing[!] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hehe. I have a somewhat better technique than these guys at least. I usually write a first draft two days before delivery, with at least 75% of the required length. Then the night before, I rewrite it so it flows nicely, cut a lot, then cook up new bullshit to reach the required length on the line number. Usually gets me an A-.

But what I write is still bullshit. I just discuss the matter both ways then never conclude anything. It is glorious. I also think a lot of teachers appreciate something a bit short, yet very well written. The A+ is reserved for the girl that spent a week on the essay, writing 5 drafts and actually giving a shit.

My two best papers in English last semester were started 12 hours before they were due. Sad thing is I can actually write a good paper.. I just can't get started and I'm also a perfectionist. So.. I think that's why starting it last minute works out the best. I make myself get started and I don't have time to pick at all the little things.. only have time to get it done and power-edit when it's actually done.

Had a teacher say this three times last semester. But I only started the assignment four hours before class started the date of my deadline. It was a nine-page paper that looked more like an annotated bibliography (teacher's preference), so it was less rigorous than it sounds. My teacher gave all like 18 people in my class A's. I probably could have submitted two hours worth of work and gotten the same score, smh.

The following comment does not apply to all audiences.

Neurons in the brain are more active when the human is pressured into an important activity, as small amounts of adrenaline increases have been known to happen during these situations. In a nutshell; you think faster, more logically, and are more in-tune to your assignment/task under pressure.
