That is what I was thinking, you know. Show them the definition of religion . It just makes no sense when I see people post things like this.

There's so many possible replies, I can't narrow it down to one...

"Do you know your boyfriend got his own mother pregnant?"

"Little miss Daddy-issues is looking for a Father Figure here, isn't she?" (or "Girl, Jesus is totally old enough to be your Father!")

"And Captain Picard is my commanding officer, not my favorite character from TV."

Everyone has invisible friends. Then they grow up.

Ask her if she should really be posting about her affair with her gardener, Jesus Gomez, on FB.

Why not just leave them alone and respect their beliefs? I know that this will not be very popular on here, but do you really have to jump on anything that mentions God and spout some comment that is just trying to be clever, and is unlikely to change anything about their beliefs?

[–]greenzephyr1986 1 point2 points ago

I was gonna say the same thing. as an atheist myself we shouldn't seek to insult peoples beliefs, that will only serve to create a further rift between the religious and non_religious. if you still feel the need to make a comment on the matter seek instead to educate the girl and perhaps convince her of our perspective.

Why not just leave them alone

Maybe because you feel an obligation to help your friend avoid nauseatingly unctuous public expressions of piety?

and respect their beliefs?

Because that would be patronizing. We should never respect their beliefs. We can respect their right to believe whatever they want, while still thinking that it's a crock of shit.

Saying "lol gay", or "Do you know your boyfriend got his own mother pregnant?", or "is your name mary magdalene and i didn't know you was a hooker?" is hardly going to help them.

They are doing you no harm by believing and saying what they are. Just realise that people believe different things for different reasons and leave it at that.

[–]scornucopia 0 points1 point ago

First, I would never say any of those things.

Second, their belief may not directly do me any harm at the particular instant that the pious pronouncement is made, but that doesn't mean that the belief is harmless. There is too much tacit assent to religious stupidity, in my view, and challenging it, without attacking the person if possible, is to be encouraged. Believing that you "have a relationship with Jesus" is patently moronic for any reasonable definition of "relationship". I might be inclined to ask "What do you mean by 'relationship'?", for example, which challenges the stupid statement without being directly insulting. If the person infers insult, that's their problem.

[–]ImChristian 1 point2 points ago

I would accept that your response, "What do you mean by 'relationship'" would be much more acceptable than the other suggestions on here. Personally, I am always willing to have a civilised discussion about my faith, but posting a clever comment to try to make the person look stupid is just immature.

"lol gay"

Or if it's a girl, tell her that's lamer than saying she has a boyfriend in another country. Canada is the go-to one for Americans, right?

[–]ganner 3 points4 points ago

Downvoted for "gay" as insult

It was more of a character thing than anything else, hence my deliberate misuse of English.

[–]GordontheGiraffe[S] 0 points1 point ago

Haha, I'd imagine it'd be one of those European countries, if I had to pick. But its very similar to the girl who has a boyfriend in insert state next to current state and it is hard to visit him sometimes.

If it's a girl she's a necrophiliac, if it's a guy he's gay. End of story
