This is the Andromeda galaxy.

It is the closest large galaxy to the Milky Way. It is larger than our own. It has two distinctive satellites, and the more distant Triangulum galaxy, in orbit with it.

In five billion years, it will collide with our galaxy. The conglomeration that is created will be an elliptical galaxy of some sort.

You won't get to see that.

But you know what? That hardly matters. It will happen, with or without anyone watching. Five billion years is a long time; it took somewhere between 3 and 4 billion years to get life to what it is today, and only a few hundred million of those with anything complex. If we don't annihilate ourselves, humans might be able to see the collision of galaxies in the front yard.

Of course, not the humans that you know now. Evolution is a logical constant, and will not stop if reproduction continues to work as it does today. I can assure you, you probably would not recognise those humans.

But again, this matters not. Life is something that happened to The Universe by chance, and you are a product of a whole lot of chances. Your life is, too, governed by chances, whether you like that or not. So, make the best of them. Live.

Tip your waiter.

"Tip your waiter." That put the icing on the cake.

[–]Shellface -1 points0 points ago

Maybe "waiter" was a metaphor for "mortality". Okay, that makes no sense.

Isn't it possible that human evolution has largely halted? There are a lot of evolutionary pressures that we counter with technology and medicine rather than letting natural selection take its course.

[–]Diplomjodler 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Technology and medicine are creating new evolutionary pressures. At this point, we can only speculate how they will influence our development.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What Diplomjodler said. Given our socially ingrained expectations of what humans are supposed to look like, and the fact that visible mutations negatively affect one's chances of reproducing, it's unlikely that our species will undergo much in the way of drastic cosmetic change for quite some time. Current evolutionary pressures will likely lead to more "behind the scenes" types of evolutionary changes. A prime example would be lactase persistence (the opposite of lactose intolerance, essentially). Mammals naturally begin to lose their ability to process milk as they age; individuals living in cultures which rely heavily on cows have been put under significant evolutionary pressure to continue to be able to process dairy. For this reason, over 80% of those with European ancestry have evolved lactase persistence, while in some areas of the world the rate of lactose intolerance is as high as 90%.

That is why we have resistant bacteria.

it'll glide through (since it's mostly space, to have a clear image, picture our neighbourhood), distort, then come back like a sling and we'll all be dead.

I wish we would have evolved to have wings or gills or stronger skin. Humans really weren't made very well. I hope future humans have cooler features. _^

It took me much longer than I care to admit to actually get this to be my wallpaper. I haven't changed my wallpaper in something like 3 years.

That's right its motivational for me and could be to all. There is no need for religion. We have the universe. One life to be thankful for.

[–]DarrenBurton 4 points5 points ago

We are the universe.

I stand corrected. We are the universe

[–]taterbizkit -1 points0 points ago

[–]taterbizkit 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nah. I was but I decided to quit. you all can go be a universe if you want.

[–]AGaW 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You are the universe, whether you accept it or not. You are made of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen---the stuff that exists all over the universe. You are atoms that have come to consciousness.

[–]taterbizkit -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

OK, if you say so. I don't have any black holes or galaxies in me, and I don't subscribe to deliberately kitschy twists of language like the rest of you all do.

I am part of the universe. I am not the universe. I detest such stupidities.

[–]AGaW 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The universe is everything that exists, including matter. We exist, and we are matter, so we are the universe.

A bicycle is two wheels, a seat and a frame but that doesn't make a wheel equivalent to a bicycle.

[–]taterbizkit 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sticking with "I don't subscribe to deliberately kitschy twists of language."

I'm not the universe. I'm part of the universe. You can go stand over there with all the kitschy people and make up all kinds of cute sayings and have a whole cute saying party. I'm just a guy. Guy is not equivalent to universe, no matter how you construe them.

Christ.

u·ni·verse/ˈyo͞onəˌvərs/ Noun:

All existing matter and space considered as a whole; the cosmos.

You guys are saying "We are the universe," and mean "The same matter which makes up and was made by the universe makes up my body." Taterbizkit is saying is saying "I am not the universe," meaning "I'm not the entirety of matter and space." I'm sure he/she has absolutely no issue with the assertion that he/she is made of matter.

You guys are speaking poetically, he's speaking literally. Don't berate someone for preferring semantic precision over catchy phrases.

I've thought carefully and determined that the universe is a beautiful place and it's eternal expansion is very provocative. The countless years this must have taken to create only goes to prove that not only are we not alone is this vast universe, but the notion of made up entities controlling it is laughable at best.

Interest in Astronomy as well as other sciences usually correlates to lack of belief in deities. Intent is irrelevant.

To those who do not understand, no explanation is possible. To those who understand, no explanation is necessary. If you can look at this and miss the point, you are not capable of any intelligent discussion. I think you're either blind or totally and irretrievably ignorant.

Okay, 400 billion stars, give or take, going to collide with our galaxy momentarily, so? I know where to find 200 billion more very much like it.

[–]DoxBox 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It would take more than 6000 years just to go from one side of our galaxy to the other, at light speed, an ostensibly unreachable goal.

To get there, to that galaxy, would take over 2.6 million years, at the same speed.

Barring some catastrophe in the next few hundred years wiping out the planet, we will get there.

I love this, the picture on its own reminds me of a Buddhist Koan, the parables and stories they use to reach enlightenment. I feel like really pondering the majesty of space can only lead you toward a more open, atheistic mode of thought.

[–]4-bit 0 points1 point ago

Your caption is confusing.

It could mean this should push you over the edge into atheism.

It could mean you believe something divine had to create this.

It could mean 'aliens'.

Due to my poor caption, I will say this: This is a picture of the universe, okay thats obvious. What I was trying to get at is that because of the magnificent wonders of the universe, this has led me to my full atheism. It opened my eyes to so much more. Much more than religion could ever give me. All I am doing is showing part of of story. I apologize for it being confusing to some. So I guess my message is this: learn about the wonders of the universe its much more rewarding and beautiful than any religion.
