Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

False! In actuality, the giraffe half of this bear is also a vampire, so its physical manifestations in the creature cannot be seen in reflections.

It's an evolutionary thing. Polar bears have long necks to help them swim and hunt more efficiently.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Eh, isn't that for triangles?

[–]CreativeRedditName 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Its the equation for both. Triangle and circles are essentially the same thing.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What? No, not really. x2 + y2 = r2 does use the Pythagorean theorem to create a list (an infinitely long list) of ordered pairs (x,y) which all are equidistant (r units away) from the origin. Which is a circle. Or a 1-sphere. Whatever.

The "equation" for a triangle would have to be something different. The easiest way would be to have a line with a nonzero (and non-infinite) slope and to plot vertical and horizontal lines for the bases.

I understand it helping them swim, but hunt? How so? Something to do with chasing after seals I presume?

(Sincerely, if you (Or anyone) has got any insight, I'm quite curious.)

[–]commoncourtesy 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Polar bears mostly hunt by camping the surfacing holes that seals create and use to surface for air and rest. These holes are usually much smaller than the bear, so their long sleek necks help them snare the seals more easily before they can escape back into the water.

[–]dnalloheoj 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Gotcha, thanks for the CommonCourtesy :)

I assumed as much, I just wasn't quite sure. I figured that if it was for any other reason besides chasing seals up holes that more animals would've developed similar traits.

Thanks for the insight :)

I love it when zoos have underwater windows in the polar bear exhibit. When you see them on land you have no idea that they could be such graceful swimmers.

You all know how badass polar bears are. But walruses are actually tougher. I saw a video recently of a polar bear attacking a walrus pack. The adult males formed a tight circle around the females and young. After slashing and biting at one male walrus's back for a few minutes, the polar bear walked away defeated. They can use those tusks offensively too.

I don't know for sure but I have heard stories about grizzly bears actively hunting people.

[–]tling 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Only at the end of the season if they're not yet fat enough to hibernate. See the movie "Grizzly Man" for details. But all bears that live near people (ie all but polar bears) will actively run away from humans, because those are the only bears that have lived. Man-made selection.

[–]dnalloheoj 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

According to this extremely qualified, likely PHD response from the greatest source on earth the other animal is a Crocodile.

[–]skodi 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For those wondering, Black bears are much more apt to do a predatory attack on humans than grizzlies. That's why it's a better idea to fight a black bear and play dead with grizzlies.

[–]MarkTwainsMoustache 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, you have a slight chance of convincing a starving black bear you are enough of a threat that he/she leaves you alone. If a grizzly bear decides you are food and you don't have a very large firearm or a well-trained and unusually loyal attack hippopotamus, you are food pretty much no matter what you do.

[–]pants75 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

attack hippopotamus!

[–]joeanon 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Throw your backpack and run or look for a confined spot the bear can't get into.. like some kind of rock niche or such. I'm not sure it takes a large firearm to take down a grizzly. They are large, they are not bullet proof. A couple shots in its head with pretty much any caliber should kill it. Maybe a 22 wouldnt, but I think it would.

Shut the fuck up, Brett. No one cares about your shitty trip to Churchill.

EDIT: The only reason I opened these comments is that I knew you would be in here, "Hey everyone, look at my Churchill pictures."

EDIT2: Remember how Johnathon told us how if a polar bear attacked him he wouldn't run, instead he would kill it with his bush knife? SURE, OKAY FATTY, YOU'RE GOING TO TAKE ON A 1,200 LB KILLING MACHINE WITH A SHORT PIECE OF SHARP METAL. Then he fell off the dock at low-tide and broke his leg. My only regret is not being there to see it happen.

[–]Ecocide 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But.. but.. I care.

You missed the last Churchill post then, cause I posted in that one too.

Yeah he wanted to walk out to the Ithica shipwreck with polar bears roaming around. So badass because he had a 6 inch knife with him to kill any bear that came at him. I think everyone who knows him regrets not being able to witness that fall. I still have yet to find out who it was that stood over the edge right after it happened and took a cell phone pic BEFORE helping him.

[–]cptcliche 6 points7 points ago

I wouldn't risk my life for a close up look of a polar bear on the gamble that it is already reaching as high as it can.

[–]Black_Apalachi 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ugh... I'm the one guessing as I can't see the whole bear. I'm going to assume the guys there are researchers who know shit about polar bears and therefore are fully aware of its capabilities and behaviour.

In any case, whoever is taking the picture wouldn't need a masters degree to notice whether or not its legs are bent or its feet are flat.

[–]Sigma34561 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The logic is flawed. Anyone who knows shit about polar bears wouldn't place their unprotected heads anywhere near them. Therefore, this guy does not know shit about polar bears.

[–]Black_Apalachi 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]Sigma34561 -1 points0 points ago

That beast is powerful enough to tear his body through that tiny window with one claw. This isn't daring, but rather training for an eventual Darwin's Award.

Polar bears are half-ton instinctually-driven death-marauders. It might be cool to see one in the wild, but I'd be too busy shitting my pants to enjoy it.

Did you guys know that polar bears can be actually very friendly because they live alone most of the time? It is hard to find other polar bears so they get lonely. D:
