Hell yes. I use university internet because the paid one provided by the hall of accommodation is also slow as fuck, but not free. The problem is, the signal strength is not great, and as a consequence I experience constant disconnects, slow speed and all other pleasant things.
The fun thing is that they block the access to all porn, torrent and proxy related sites. But they did it kind of strange. For instance, only r/gonewild is blocked, while all other nsfw subreddits are ok to access. On 4chan they blocked every board EXCEPT for 18+ ones. Morons.
All restrictions are easily bypassed using proxy, but torrents and steam are unavailable because the ports necessary for their work are blocked and there is no way around it.

My university is the exact opposite. They make it a point to tell you at orientation that we have the second fastest internet in the nation because no one is allowed to be faster than the Pentagon by national law. There are seniors here who refuse to live off campus because they enjoy the wi-fi too much. Makes going home for holidays a pain...

One thing I never complained about in college was the Internet speed - especially coming from my dial-up access at home. Throw in Napster, AIM and ICQ, 1998 was a glorious year for me.

I have a similar problem, except they use Blue Coat hardware to censor the internet. Minus, tor, and torrents are censored, among many other websites.

This usually ends with me cursing IT for throttling my connection whenever I hit 3000 connections (I've been up to 19,000). Which I seem to be able to exceed easily even though my router is set for far less than 3000 connections allowed (i.e. their counting method is fucked up).

I have my wifi router plugged into the wall and a cable plugged into the router and my computer is connected to both. Maybe it speeds up my internet, maybe not, but nobody on my floor can tell either way and I forgot how fast my internet was at home so haters gonna hate either way

Go to a real university?

From 2002-2006 we had so much bandwidth it was crazy. Everyone had a static, public IP, download was uncapped and we'd usually max out the 100Mbit Ethernet connection (11+MB/sec downloads were common). Upload was capped at 500KB/sec (yes ~4Mbit).

We'd all run torrents, directconnect i2hub, and various game servers from the dorm rooms.
