Inefficient use of space

But you can vomit cleanly out of any window in the place. This promotes a harmonious community.

[–]mrpopenfresh 56 points57 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm guessing it's pushed out the back in reverse proportions. In that case you lose the common backyard, but everyone gets some sort of terrace in the back, wich in an urban environnement would be a plus.

[–]Janus_Grayden 124 points125 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It would be one thing if they actually used that space, but leaving it all vacant just highlights the useless design.

[–]Lokky 90 points91 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Even worse, the units on the bottom will not get any direct sunlight. It may look like a cool design but the more common terraced building (with the bottom unit being deeper than the one on top of it) are much better.

[–]mrHV 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it has been mentioned, not confirmed, that the opposite side of the building is terraced.

Like dance is a really inefficient use of movement?

[–]Cendeu 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually almost exactly like that.

Dancing is technically useless, but people do it for entertainment.

Same with this house. It's technically a waste of space, but IMO, it's art. I think it's awesome.

[–]davideo71 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's probably one of the better reasons to learn a language. Or as they say in Macedonia....

Одмаздата е јадење најдобар беше ладно, и секогаш со компири.

[–]HumanistGeek 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But it's not Japanese. There is no "L" sound in Japanese. The closest thing is their "R" sound, which is a combination of "R" and "L". Also, in Japanese one can't end a syllable with a consonant, unless the next syllable begins with that consonant or unless the consonant is "n." So the first syllable of his username, "Bil," is definitely not Japanese.

[–]NoFeetSmell 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I didn't put a ton of thought into it, I just went for a daft reply, really... The kokuya part sounds pretty Japanese, and that was all I latched on to. I'd like to apologise to my family, my friends, the Academy, the fine and upstanding people of Japan, and all those who may be studying Japanese, if my actions today have caused any consternation, confusion or loss of sleep. It seems like seppuku is probably the only way to retain my honour now. Goodbye cruel world...

Civil engineering student here. I think we can safely assume it's not real, based on these points:
1) This building would be extremely inefficient. Usage of space, function, building cost.. it's all off.
2) There is no real structure support. A structure like that would have to be supported on the sides, as there is no other way. The span is about 12 meters which is quite a lot for a horizontal support system. But the real issue here is that you can't really use the 2 neighboring buildings, since they are historical brick buildings and they don't really have that much spare capacity in their design and you can't just jam another construction between them. (Not just because of the bearing capacity alone but also because it would be almost impossible to incorporate such thing into already standing brick structures.)
3) You would have to bribe a lot of people to get the permission to build a monster like this in an obviously historical area.

4) This is a website of the artist who made the picture.
There are also pictures like this or this which are definitely not real.
5) ???
6) Profit

As I was thinking about the same thing, I wondered how cool it would be to put each level on its own moving platform so that you could reverse the indentation, or even line them all up. Yes, tremendous waste of space, but an interesting concept just the same.

[–]FakePlasticJayj 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The structure is fine. That floor system is very strong and suuuuper expensive. The waffling of the slab helps evenly distribute all of the forces straight down the vertical members of the building and into the foundation. That building just looks like a massive waste of space...

[–]skybike 61 points62 points ago

[–]foxmtbr 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't deny that the slab could be made sufficient, so long as you have some fat girders running across (though it would be expensive as fuck). But I don't see what load path you're talking about. There is no vertical support; there's no way in hell you can just attach those floors to the adjacent (dilapidated) masonry buildings. Have you ever tried building a massive dreidel with legos? You'd end up with a pile of bricks and corpses.

[–]notcoolbrooo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Couldn't you just implement the waffle slab into the other, more pyramid form everyone was talking about? Then you would have an even stronger structure.

All that wood was badly thought out and could not be maintained properly and so was badly damaged soon after construction. There is an interesting review of how this architecture fails to endure at famous architect blog: you don't have to be good.

[–]sleepwithafryingpan 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yeah but this way, the people who live at the bottom get even more fucked than usual. As a bottom-floor apartment dweller myself, I've long felt that I was permitted too much sunlight, considering the fact that the people above me pay $100 more a month. This design allows the hierarchy to be much more clearly established.

[–]mavere 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It also ruins the street wall without offering anything in return.

Imagine walking across a line of elegantly preserved historical buildings and then coming across this barren concrete plot flanked by grimy walls and shrouded in shadow. blech.

At first glance I had the same thought. But after reading a few comments, one suggesting a café at the bottom floor with tables out front, I realised that the area is perfect for a nice and somewhat private or secluded little park.

Have a café in the bottom floor, with one or two trees in that huge open area with benches and tables surrounding them. Offers some nature and privacy to the apartments and their balconies as well. Would certainly be appealing.

Yeah, except if it went the other way, those apartments would get light. And not cost so much to rent b/c the building would have been built with respect to natural forces. Other than that, it's a fucking awesome idea and I think more buildings should be built solely on the principal of fucking awesome ideas.

It appears the laymen wants to see terrible design.

[–]russman2500 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So I assume no elevators? Since its a building of upside down stairs.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I came here to complain about the disasterous use of space.

Complaint filed.

[–]RaoulDuke44 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yea, but that guy on the left parks like a dick.

[–]RsonW 1 point2 points ago

Am I the only one who thinks it's an illusion? Or am I just high?

[–]r4ygun 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How can you actually think that's the coolest building ever? Whoever designed is retarded. Anyone that lives there that is no on the top floor might as well live in a cave.

[–]DMacK12 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Anyone else see the fuckjob of a parking attempt in the lower left?

[–]lazyant 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

if it was real: ugly as fuck, waste of space, ugly side walls exposed, no light getting into lower balconies...

[–]moarbutterythantoast 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Live 2nd floor --> get zero sunlight on balcony

[–]appi 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm clearly not an architect; is that structurally stable? Also seems like everyone not on the top floor would fucking hate living there.

[–]iHeartCoolStuff 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

how it no fall over?

[–]Kukuzunumu 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

how is this even structurally possible???

[–]DarcyHart 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would hate to live there.

[–]didshereallysaythat 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, lets design a building in which all of the tenants get no sunlight.

[–]langleypeterson 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If this were real, it would be cool, and attract a lot of people.

[–]themightybaron 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

LOL ya if you hate the sun and good use of space. This is idiocy in architect form.

[–]miklaen 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Zoom in and scroll up and down really fast

[–]Nesquik41393 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]expedient 1 point2 points ago

Pretty cool, but I'm kinda partial to Habitat 67.

[–]cannotlogon 1 point2 points ago

I think that building was constructed on the underside of a soccer stadium.

[–]medicineboy 1 point2 points ago

[–]daywalker1882 1 point2 points ago

Cool, but why...?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's the reddit equivalent of a novelty account. Interesting but not really useful.

[–]thefloppydog 1 point2 points ago

I'd love to meet the engineer that approved of it.

[–]Radico87 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's as though they had a decent building plan, but made it upside down and backwards.

[–]madgeezer128 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i dunno .... it looks pretty shady to me

[–]thegadd 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This isn't a real building. Sorry guys. It's a piece of architectural photography manipulated by the photographer. He does some pretty awesome work. Check it out here!

[–]Everseer 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is a terrible idea. I would rather live in a much bigger apartment than one that just looks cool on the outside, but is smaller.

[–]knowone572 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The coolest part is when I scroll up and down repeatedly.

[–]haute_mua 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's actually the dumbest building ever. What a waste of space and sunlight.

[–]DrunkmanDoodoo 0 points1 point ago

I like how every other reply is an engineer telling us why it is inefficient. We get it engineers! Now go back to TF2 where you belong.

[–]InterPunct 0 points1 point ago

[–]danceswithknives 0 points1 point ago

[–]WodniwTnuocsid 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I like the un-building.

In Jersey City they'd park cars under it. Just like they ripped up their front lawns to do so.

[–]okaythisisit 0 points1 point ago

This is a digital illustration by Victor Enrich.. more about him here.

[–]ihavebeetus 0 points1 point ago

[–]DaffyMalYinkleYankle 0 points1 point ago

[–]overtheedge79 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not cool it's dumb. The top floor steals all the sunlight. I don't see why anyone would want to live there.

From the other side, everyone would get their own terrace plus the sun wouldn't be blocked out the apparent above you.

[–]reversekarma 0 points1 point ago
