Typical Top Gear: James nearly shoots his face off, and Hammond's first reaction is shock, while Jeremy's is to laugh.

[–]DarkCc 54 points55 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yes... but Jeremy does has a blank expression at the very beginning. he only starts laughing when the guy puts the gun away.

Was.. no more Steve Carell makes the show a lot less amazing.

[–]wewtaco 67 points68 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I disagree. I thought I'd really miss Michael, but Andy works surprisingly well as the boss. The only thing that's really wrong with the show is Robert California.

[–]ConspicuousUsername 38 points39 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I do still watch the show, and I do still enjoy it, I just think Steve Carell just brought a special kind of awkward along with him. In my opinion, the show will never be as good as it was with Jim chasing after Pam, with Michael as the boss.

[–]pomegranati 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know why but the character Michael pisses me off with his childish behavior. I guess that's what they wanted to do.

[–]mudkipzftw 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought Robert was really cool when they first brought him in for the interview, but he's not so great as a recurring character. It changes the whole dynamic of the show because Michael was walked all over, but since Robert is so dominant that whole aspect is gone. Watching an episode from seasons 1-4 and then one from the latest season is like watching an entirely different show. I wouldn't say it's necessarily worse, but it's definitely not better.

We've gotten really off topic... LOL THATS NOT HOW U HOLD A GUN

[–]Patass 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I shed a few tears during Michael's proposal in the last few eps of 7.

[–]Xiaz89 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I got as far as end of season 7, since then I've been rewatching every episode with my roommates(they're loving it), we're getting close to season 8 now.

I'm scared.

[–]RopeBunny 1 point2 points ago

Shhh shhh shh...

It's okay! Just breath deeply and start slowly.

[–]slipperyfist 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm still watching it, but I really don't know why. The middle of season 6 is when I noticed a decline in quality, season 8 is like a completely different show. The characters act differently, the plot progresses differently, it's just different. Idk if it's worse from an objective standpoint, but I think it's gone down the crapper.

[–]Th3_Hegemon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The first season, Carrell played Michael in a way that just made the show unwatchable for me. I love the show but I can not watch the first season because of him (the 2nd was better, but by the 3rd he really had it nailed).

[–]RDandersen 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Office was remade because the melancholy and darkness of the original is not a kind of humour that has a very large following in the US. Sure, making money was a motive as well, but that applies to pretty much every entertainment everything everywhere.

[–]dfw-guy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just so you know there's an Australian version with some interesting cars we don't get in the US :P

[–]RDandersen 2 points3 points ago

The German one is fun to watch in German when you hardly understand the language and the Australian one is okay.

Seperate parahraph for emphasis: Nothing will ever come near the current UK Top Gear though.

Don't worry about it, there have been plenty of English takes on American shows that turned out... questionable.

I got so excited when I saw the History Channel was going to show Top Gear, thinking it was just going to be re-runs, but of course it wasn't. Of course I think most of the reason people don't like them is because they aren't the British guys. People tend to throw real big hissy-fits when they experience something they are unused to.

[–]Radico87 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, the entire reason people don't like them is because they're not funny, they're awkward, and the show is garbage.

[–]boobers3 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't understand what is keeping him from pointing the weapon towards a source of light and looking through the breach.

[–]isprant 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A good point. I actually went shooting today with my 870 and I didn't see an impact from the slug so I checked for a squib by the method you just described. It's pretty difficult to get the angle right, and sometimes you don't see a lot of light anyway. Also (I'm not from up north, so I can't verify this) I would imagine that there's a possibility that the barrel could be partially blocked? So some light could come through? Not sure about that, though... All I know is that what he did is a known method for checking the barrel in extreme ice conditions.

[–]DreadPiratesRobert 46 points47 points ago

As has been discussed every time this has been posted, this is a legitimate way to check your gun, presuming you have already cleared it.

I understand most people (including myself) operate under the "A gun is always loaded" mindset, but this is still a legitimate way to do things.

[–]zgh5002 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

IIRC this is how they are taught in Canada to check a firearm. After you are certain the chamber is clear, you look down the barrel to be sure there is nothing lodged in the barrel. I do the same thing, but with disassembled firearms, however out in the field this is perfectly acceptable, again provided you clear the chamber.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You put your finger in the breach and look for it down the barrel.

It's in the handbook for the PAL course but I doubt many instructors will tell you to actually do it. It's just a bad habit.
Using a flashlight or your cleaning rod is much better (assuming it's not a bolt-action in which case you should obviously just take it out).

It is. There's a higher quality version around and you can see the stock position "phase" (digital manipulation, albeit poor) from one position to the next when it goes off. Also the audio of the "missed shot" strangely cuts off while all previous shot reports echo long and fade out.

[–]Igloo444 36 points37 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bud Dwyer, the details on this may be a bit fuzzy because I read about it so long ago, but basically he was a politician who was falsely accused of accepting bribes and was facing a career shattering media shit storm, so before the trial, he went on live TV, then read his suicide note and pulled out a gun, stuck it in his mouth and shot himself on camera.

Filter wrote a song about it called "Hey Man, Nice Shot"

[–]OuttaIdeaz 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Imho, Dwyer was a man who did the absolute best he could given the circumstances he was thrust into.

I don't mean to casually condone suicide. To me, it's often a selfish opt-out that's bound to leave your loved ones feeling betrayed and hurt.

In his case though, he was an innocent man fighting for his freedom and to clear his name. He even asked President Reagan to pardon him, but to no avail. Rather than leave his family in a state of financial ruin due to his accrued legal fees, he decided to die in office so that they could claim full survivor benefits. The way he did it may have been seen as tasteless, senseless, and purely as a sick form of exhibition by some, but it got the attention that he felt his case deserved and it allowed him to provide for his family even after he was gone.

I'm sorry, but to me that's about as honorable as it gets. It should never have had to come to that, but there it is. I'm sure there are plenty of dissenting opinions out there, just thought it was worth sharing mine.

[–]jules_serenityPi 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would call this modern day Harakiri. No shame in that, rather shame on the Leader and government who ideally stood by as this man took his life.

[–]Skitrel 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People need to stop calling suicide selfish, a lack of understanding of the mental issues that cause suicidal tendencies is what causes this. It's not right to label them as doing something selfish when it is really not them making the decisions, they are not of their right mind, they are often entirely different people.

Do not blame the person, blame the disease.

[–]OuttaIdeaz 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You make a good point. I guess it's the emotional equivalent of a knee-jerk reaction to be angry with someone who decides to take their own life. The human experience is subjective, and we tend to look at the world from the point of view of how it affects us. I think this misconception stems from the thought process of "so-an-so killed themselves, but I'm left alone, and I'm the one that's hurt." Maybe we're the ones being selfish instead?

[–]Skitrel 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe we're the ones being selfish instead?

In essence this is often the case. It's far easier to change the negative feelings we have of ANY situation into anger at the person rather than truly understanding the situation and wallowing in the sadness. An easy example for this is relationships, look at the number of people that will childishly make themselves hate an ex in order to get over a relationship, as opposed to being sad. Converting to anger is a natural reaction we use.

For the bystanders of suicide it's also much easier to deal with it this way than to feel racked with the guilt of having not noticed, or not done anything when they did notice something was wrong, or in the case of knowing fully that they were going to try something - not doing enough to stop it.

I was close to someone who was successful in their suicide, I do not blame them for the negative feelings it caused me though, they were not to blame for the complete mental clusterfuck that caused them to carry out those actions. I've been through proper depression myself when I was a little younger so I have a little experience myself in understanding exactly what it's like to have the chemicals in your body not mixing right and for your mental state to just not be "you". It is an incredibly difficult thing to convey to anyone that hasn't experienced that kind of imbalance, the kind of mental influence it has on you.

The only way I've found to describe this is, you know those times where you just don't quite feel right? Like you're not inside your own head? You can't think clearly and your brain just doesn't feel under your own control? Those kinds of events pass after a good meal or sleep right? Well, mix that with the most gut wrenchingly horrible sadness in the world, stress, any kinds of things you can think of, concoct it all in a huge mess, then imagine all of that together in some huge clusterfuck, it's more than enough to make you do something stupid in the moment, let alone some people going through varying degrees of clusterfuck for weeks, months, years.

All it takes is the wrong concoction of crap, negativity and mental stress to break someone. And that's the best term I have for it, they are broken and need fixing, it is not their fault. When I had depression, "my body is broken" was precisely the way it felt.

Though I personally never had suicidal tendencies, understanding them I feel is difficult understand what ill mental health is really like.

Earlier today I saw a video of a young russian soldier being stabbed in the back and beheaded slowly while crying for his mother after having watched his friends/comrades get executed in front of him... posted in a thread here on reddit. This video of the guy shooting himself in the head is like eye-bleach by comparison.

I'd still advise people to just not watch this video or things like these in general. It sticks around in your memory longer than you'd expect/want.

This video seriously changed the way I looked at the world. It ruined a part of me I'll never get back. That part of you that thinks no one could do a thing like that.

This was the first video I saw when I realized video of people being killed could be watched on YouTube. I haven't watched the video in a long time, maybe a few years, but the image of his face with blood pouring from his nose is engraved in my brain. Very disturbing, especially when you read about why he did it.

[–]damsontree 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is it me, or is it kind of weirdly fascinating how his nose sort of turned into a tap of blood very very quickly? Instead of when someone cracks their head open on a rock or something. Where it sort oozes dramatically. Like at the end of a murder in an art film where the camera pans across the body, from the feet up to the site of injury across with blood creeping across kitchen tiles. In that sort of creepy way?

Congratulations on the repost. It has been posted before. This is from the Arctic/Polar Special for anyone wondering. Now I'm going to explain why what he did was not as bad as you all think it was.

The reason he pointed a gun at his face is because of ACTS & PROVE. What he had done was make sure it wasn't loaded by following ACTS then looked down the barrel from the other end to ensure that there were no obstructions in the barrel because firing a clogged gun is really really bad (worse than pointing an unloaded gun at your face). The reason he looked down the barrel from the business end was because you can't see down the barrel of a non-breech loading gun without taking it apart. This video has him explaining his actions.

[–]KarmakazeNZ 6 points7 points ago

Still it's hilarious to see him do it, and even more hilarious to see their reaction to it.

Alright, well I haven't seen it, and maybe other people haven't either. Not all of us have the time that you do to squander through Reddit. And it doesn't matter if it's fake or not, I'm not here to determine if that's a genuine (re)action. It's funny nonetheless.

[–]KarmakazeNZ 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, the closest any of them came to being killed was when May got hit by that tow rope and knocked the fuck out. I can't remember the exact episode, but they were doing one of those challenges and May was standing between the vehicles. When the rope snapped taught, it caught May's legs and threw him to the ground hard enough that his head hit with a very loud thump.

That was a "near death" experience.

[–]takanishi79 1 point2 points ago

That was the only episode where I honestly feared for any of their lives. Everything thing else ridiculous that they've done, I felt like they had sufficient security and safety around to keep something terrible from happening.

My family reunion every year is host to a firing range and target shooting, and last year a family member brought along some dolt who was walking around with the gun held straight out in front of her. I hightailed it back inside, because we had already told her once that she had to watch where sneeze aiming. My granddad recognized what the idiot was doing and he left with me. Maybe gun safety courses should be a requirement?

[–]AlphaEnder 0 points1 point ago

Even though it's been explained that this was after proper safety precautions, the gun safety side of me twitched my arm towards the computer screen during this, as if I could somehow save him.
