I work at a zoo where there are several dozen free roaming peacocks and peahens. Every now and then there is a rebellious bastard who will fly over a fence and run away. We eventually get a call from someone in a close by neighborhood that is complaining of a peacock hangin out in their yard.

What I was listening to when I stumbled across this.

They can fly like chickens or some wild fowl can fly: short distances, usually just enough to get to tree branches where they roost at night away from predators.

Grew up at a riding stable in a regional park, where peacocks were an introduced attraction to the area. They breed easily, and every year a lot of babies were given to zoos or other parks to minimize the population. Even with coyotes and mountain lions in the area, their numbers were out of control.

Also, they're cocky assholes who will chase cats, approach people, and fly out of bushes when you're riding spooky horses in the arena. I learned firsthand, peacocks are the jerks of the avian world.
