Ho*

[–]WatchYourTone 93 points94 points ago

Yes. So many assasses don't get that this is a colloquial usage of the word "whore" and it's properly written as ho' with an apostrophe just like in "po' boy sandwich" for "poor boy". I don't get why rappers aren't familiar with their own vernacular. Ludacris got it right.

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points ago

Well, aren't you a smarty smart pants.

If you want to create a contraction of whore, then you would have to spell it like this:

'ho'

just like how the 'n' in rock 'n' roll is a contraction of "and."

[–]ShagCarpetting 22 points23 points ago

Don't use that tone with him!

[–]WatchYourTone 5 points6 points ago

You're magical. Both are acceptable.

[–]shmishshmorshin 1 point2 points ago

Speaking of 'n', one of my coworkers uses it in substitution of "in", and in drives me bonkers. Besides the fact that it's incorrect and she doesn't use any apostrophes, even if it was correct it saves you one letter. One. And it's the shortest letter to write, what the fuck?

[–]JustJonny 3 points4 points ago

I think that given its wide vernacular usage, it's permissible to drop the apostrophe. However, there's no excuse for throwing an E in there for no reason.

[–]WatchYourTone 0 points1 point ago

Word.

[–]fuckingcreep 1 point2 points ago

Now I want a po' boy. Thanks so much for wrecking my fucking life!

[–]SqueamishCow 0 points1 point ago

Maybe you should go inform all the rappers, im sure they'd respect advice from a white guy

[–]WatchYourTone 1 point2 points ago

White? I'm not a whitepeople.

[–]BlazeOrangeDeer 4 points5 points ago

Or as she says it, "how"

[–]AxelPrime 289 points290 points ago

That video makes me want to lobotomize myself.

[–]Drunken_Economist 61 points62 points ago

Link? I know that picture is Nicki Minaj, but I don't know what video the reference is to.

[–]AxelPrime 161 points162 points ago

I can't in good faith recommend that you watch this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6j4f8cHBIM

Also, all joking aside if you are prone to epilepsy then definitely don't watch it as it can (and probably will) trigger a seizure.

[–]iamjakt 85 points86 points ago

i'm like "the fuck is this garbage? this song is terrible, i mean the images are kinda nice. colorful. but this song is just fucking terrib- DAT ASS HOLY SHIT - terrible. i mean she is a multi million dollar artist. you'd think there would be quality control before she - OMG DAT ASS IS UNREAL - made a music video, let alone one that no doubt cost so much money."

[–]lapo39 16 points17 points ago

OMG DAT ASS IS UNREAL! exactly

[–]uneekfreek 4 points5 points ago

Subliminal boner achieved

[–]popejupiter 8 points9 points ago

The ... "music?" Is retarded. I, honestly, kind of liked "Friday", in an ear-wormy kind of way. But this... It's noise. What's not her voice is a dumb ass siren or a drum beat. And her voice is pitched just above legibility for me, so only when she slowed it down for the chorus was I able to understand what she was saying.

I now have a headache. Thanks, Nikki. Bitch.

[–]PatAunces 95 points96 points ago

That's like a bad salvia trip. Do people actually like this crap?

[–]crimsonsentinel 44 points45 points ago

When I first saw Nicki Minaj, I was almost certain it was a parody.

[–]AxelPrime 140 points141 points ago

I try really hard not to judge personal choices like music, movies, books and T.V.

But it's hard to legitimately respect people who call this music instead of noise.

[–]PatAunces 47 points48 points ago

Same here, but this is just straight up annoying.

[–]Revoletion 7 points8 points ago

they said the same thing about Jazz back in the day

[–]RoflCopter4 146 points147 points ago

Because black people made it, not because they thought it sucked.

[–]Mr_Titicaca 25 points26 points ago

To be fair, the Jazz play in a mormon state so people still don't like them.

[–]Jumin 20 points21 points ago

Jazz never had a 10 second pause where someone said, "uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"

God I cannot believe I watched the video that far in.

[–]YamiSilaas 3 points4 points ago

I watched the whole thing. It gets worse towards the end.

[–]qwb3656 1 point2 points ago

At the end she said "I AM THE FEMALE WEEZY" for some reason this just blew a circuit in my brain. I dont like weezy that much but damn if i was him id be seriously pissed off.

[–]polerawkaveros 31 points32 points ago

That's what is so frustrating about hip hop music. In one moment, an artist can have an awesome song, and then their next is terrible.

If you go watch her music video Superbass it's really not that bad. Hell, I like the song, and I like the video more. I think Ms. Minaj is hot as hell.

But then she pulls this stupid ass 'Stupid Hoe' song and it's just... stupid. I didn't couldn't even watch the whole video that you posted.

[–]HandBanana22 31 points32 points ago

Saw this posted before on here. Niki Minaj is actually Jay-Z sped up.

[–]Roaning 3 points4 points ago

wow, that's just weird how that works out.

[–]brandoneius 11 points12 points ago

Yeah my girlfriend likes the superbass song and although I will never admit it, it does get stuck in my head.

[–]kittycuddler 38 points39 points ago

It's one of the songs that I would love in a foreign language. I love foreign pop music specifically because I have no fucking clue what the lyrics are, so I'm blissfully ignorant of how stupid it probably is.

[–]Yomigami 4 points5 points ago

I honestly thought she would be a kickass MC. Not as cool as Missy Elliott, but at least a viable rapper...how wrong I was. Feels bad, man.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

Her earlier stuff with young money before she was really big actually wasn't too bad. Once she started those weird accents/voices and trying to sing...it all went down the shitter.

[–]laddergoat89 1 point2 points ago

That was fucking torture.

[–]stuckboy 1 point2 points ago

Everyone's entitled to their own opinions. Some people might be of the opinion that this is good music, but they'd be wrong.

[–]akunin 2 points3 points ago

Upvote for a contradiction in two lines.

[–]AxelPrime 1 point2 points ago

I said I tried, not that I always succeeded...

[–]glitterlok 1 point2 points ago

It's an exercise in rhythm, like much of her music (and other pop music in general)...and it's quite entertaining and interesting in that light.

Seriously, I know it's all personal, but I can't imagine how you don't find this entertaining in at least some way. It's pretty bad ass.

[–]Teep 13 points14 points ago

Not really, I just watch for the ass.

[–]meh-aidez 13 points14 points ago

look how many dislikes it has

[–]GARBAGEDAYY 2 points3 points ago

Actually, no. People are hating this "song" like crazy atm.

[–]illvm 23 points24 points ago*

The thing that baffles me is that someone thought that:

  • This "music" was good enough to be performed
  • This "music" was good enough to be recorded
  • This "music" required a video to accompany it
  • Dozens of people directly contributed to making this... whatever the fuck
  • Executives thought it was good enough to invest money into it
  • And most frightening of all... people actually consume it and think it's good

WHAT THE FUCK

[–]ryan_m 4 points5 points ago

You're looking at the first part all wrong: music doesn't succeed based on how good it is.

[–]TedKord 2 points3 points ago

Music Industry: "Ok, so we can pander to and exploit the profitability of every demographic...let's sell a black, rapping version of Katy Perry!"

Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Kei$ha...they're all just different flavors of the same shit. Music for people with double-digit IQs.

[–]Forbizzle 1 point2 points ago

If you start with your last point everything else makes sense.

[–]dmcnelly 0 points1 point ago

Don't forget, that Rolls Royce from that half second snippet of the video?

This bit, right here.

$1,800 per day to rent that thing.

.5 seconds of video; $1,800. That blows my mind.

[–]ShagCarpetting 13 points14 points ago

The eyes. ಠ_ಠ

[–]GarMc 24 points25 points ago

What's with her trying to look like a plastic doll or something?

[–]moarroidsplz 4 points5 points ago

It's a reference to Gaga's eye-trick.

[–]dylansan 2 points3 points ago

Not to mention the pink/blond hair in the same style.

[–]ShagCarpetting 14 points15 points ago

They're called Circle Lenses, and this is what they do to your eyes.

Basically, they're like a magnifying glass that you stick in your eye to make the iris look bigger.

[–]GarMc 19 points20 points ago

I didn't quite mean just that part...I meant everything. The way she sits, the way she makes her lips in a pseudo duckface, just everything about her is like she's trying to mimic a mannequin.

[–]GARBAGEDAYY 1 point2 points ago

She likes the plastic barbie look. She calls her female fans barbz and her male fans kenz.

[–]ShagCarpetting 12 points13 points ago

Oh. I apologize for the miscommunication. That was my fault.

It's called your mom.

[–]Hamlet7768 12 points13 points ago

I'm still amused that has a Wikipedia article.

[–]BlazeOrangeDeer 4 points5 points ago

And it's named "Maternal Insult" in true Wikipedia style.

[–]SpermWhale 4 points5 points ago

look at this man-cat.

[–]killersnowtiger 1 point2 points ago

I thought it was just an editing trick. I guess they did the same thing in GaGa's Bad Romance video.

[–]polerawkaveros 4 points5 points ago

One of her nicknames is Black Barbie.

[–]Patsson77 1 point2 points ago

It's not Black Barbie it's Harajuku Barbie! GOSH!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

[–]BelugaTaquito 4 points5 points ago*

That was....something.

I totally get the hate, and the fact that I kind of enjoyed it has me very worried.

[–]lancerevo98 7 points8 points ago

WHO THE FUCK LET HER NEXT TO AN AVENTADOR?!

[–]BimmerAddict 7 points8 points ago

It was pink too... I cried when I saw that. Then she says something about a Rolls Royce Phantom and the video shows a Rolls Royce Ghost.

[–]Helen_Damnation 4 points5 points ago

I think my brain just broke...

[–]salsa_de_tomate 8 points9 points ago

I never thought I'd say this but I think...I think I'd rather listen to Rebecca Black than that song. That's how bad it is.

[–]theramennoodle 2 points3 points ago

Im kind of surprised there isnt some sort of warning there. For instance Jay-Z and Kanye's Niggas in Paris video actually has a warning for this reason infront of it. Kind of is scary if someone didnt know what they were getting into there.

[–]AxelPrime 3 points4 points ago

I honestly don't know enough about light triggered seizures to make that judgement call, but better safe than sorry.

[–]dmcnelly 2 points3 points ago

Off topic: Was I the only one disappointed they used a live audio clip, and a rather weak performance at that?

[–]BimmerAddict 1 point2 points ago

What in the fuck of all fucks... was that....

[–]glitterlok 1 point2 points ago

Dear reddit music purists...grow up.

Music is fantastic. It's amazing. It's beautiful. It's entertaining. Etc, etc, etc.

Maybe I'm just old and tired, but I approach music these days with a default positive lens. When I hear a song like "Stupid Hoe," I'm listening for the things I can enjoy about it, not what I can hate on.

Is it a substantial song with poetic meaning? No. Does every song need to be?

Is it a melodic masterpiece? No. Again...does every song need to be? Check out Bjork's "Volta" album for some examples of non-melodic works of art.

"Stupid Hoe" has some definite strengths. I've always loved Nicki's sense of rhythmic contrast. Each section of this song has a unique groove to it. She builds tension and releases tension throughout. It's f*cking banging, honestly.

The video is typical Nicki stuff, but the beginning is especially interesting for me, with its longer-than-typical-these-days shots of relative inactivity and the fact that a majority of the time, she's staring blankly off at an angle. Again, there's a contrast there (considering the high tempo of the song) that's very stark and jarring.

That was a conscious choice someone made when creating this video. God knows why, but it puts a definite "stamp" on the whole thing...and that's art to me.

I don't know why I'm writing this. I'm just sick of all the musical hate. Are we really that limited that we can't try to see something good in the stuff that doesn't necessarily appeal to us?

I'm not saying you have to love Nicki Minaj or this song. You don't. I don't love it. I know a lot of the public is rather upset about it.

But damn it all, I'd rather enjoy music than tear it apart and analyze its "worth" constantly.

Enjoy ALL music while you can still hear it. After all, you might have to get cochlear implants someday.

(Disclaimer: This is not a direct response to AxelPrime, but rather a response to the conversations stemming from his posting of the video.)

[–]hakhno 1 point2 points ago

you. i love you. reddit hates this song so much, it's nice to hear someone not just going "hurr durr this song sucks"

my personal favourite was a guy who threw down that he could make a better song in an afternoon. never did. (and his work struck me as nothing more than generic post-rock, doing nothing that hasn't been done more itnerestingly by others a decade ago. but to each their own, i guess.)

[–]glitterlok 1 point2 points ago

Haha! Thanks.

I just wish people didn't think so much of their identity was wrapped up in what music they approved or disapproved of.

It's one of those things I really couldn't care any less about when I meet someone, and I'm OBSESSED with music! I just don't care what anyone else thinks about it, really - it doesn't affect my opinion of a person at all if they're a Bieber fan or a Rush fan - so it's always struck me as odd when people form these concrete opinions about it.

Anyways, I'm rambling. Godspeed!

[–]apmihal 0 points1 point ago

Separate the artist from the creation, the intent from the product, and this is a work of art. Holy crap I think this is where post-postmodernism turns into post-post-postmodernism. It's glorious.

[–]kevlo 0 points1 point ago

That link belongs on /r/WTF

[–]The_Insurance 0 points1 point ago

god damn. I had only heard one other song of hers (super bass) and thought it was decent. This was fucking AWFUL.

[–]cumshot[!] 13 points14 points ago

I think its funny that the person who she is dissing in this vid is an actual gangster bitch that would wreck her shit.

[–]Drunken_Economist 14 points15 points ago

Who is it directed at?

There seems to be a lot of hate for this song in the thread, but apparently I'm the only one who can see why people would like it. It has an awesome beat, and while I don't much care for Minaj's voice, I can imagine that others would. It's obviously a song made for clubs and parties, not for relaxing or "background".

[–]cumshot[!] 19 points20 points ago

Lil Kim. You're right too, its a club song for sure.

[–]AxelPrime 5 points6 points ago

I think it's the high beeping in the background, I'm not expecting Nicki Minaj music to be calm background music, of course this is a club song, it's just that on this song, specifically the background beeping noise makes me want to kill myself. (Reminds me of an alarm clock).

[–]AlSpeer 7 points8 points ago

It's just the "stupid stupid" interposed on "you a stupid hoe you you a stupid hoe" in the chorus that gets me. She's looking right at the camera and it implies that we, the viewers, are who she thinks are stupid.

And she's probably right.

[–]falousco 1 point2 points ago

An awesome beat? Really? It's pretty weak to say the least.

[–]Mr_Titicaca 3 points4 points ago

I don't get why the general reddit tries to act cool and diss pop music when all it is meant to do is get my head poppin at the club. But I forgot reddit doesn't go out...

[–]kittycuddler 12 points13 points ago

It's not reddit that tries to dismiss all pop music as awful. Most people seem to have a gang mentality of complaining about pop music, even if they like it. It's like when the BSB, Nsync, Spears, etc were popular in middle school/high school and everyone just said how shitty they were constantly.

[–]GARBAGEDAYY 6 points7 points ago

I'm a big pop music fan and I'm all for an unusual minimalist track designed for clubbing. But this is no Whisper Song, now that was a stroke of genius. This is just trying way too hard to be as outrageous as possible, same goes for her Grammy performance. Reeks of desperation.

[–]OIP 20 points21 points ago

Reddit's understanding of pop culture is not the greatest.

[–]Stanlezz 2 points3 points ago*

So what's pop culture then? Is this pop culture?

Pop music included in pop culture is aimed at masses, simple tones, am I right? What's pop about this?

[–]AlSpeer 1 point2 points ago

HAHAH EVERYONE ON THE INTERNET IS A VIRGIN.

1990s called, they want their stereotype back.

[–]Drunken_Economist 17 points18 points ago

Oh, I should have just searched for "Nicki Minaj Stupid Hoe". I really didn't anticipate that she actually had a song called that

[–]jasmaree 13 points14 points ago

What the fuck did I just watch?

[–]keepinithamsta 22 points23 points ago

You watched Hype Williams trying to figure out how shitty of a video he can make before people stop hiring him.

[–]ihaveacalculator 2 points3 points ago

Seriously Williams used to be a great director. His Kanye West videos were top-notch. I don't understand why he would sell out like this.

[–]Mr_Titicaca 0 points1 point ago

I miss the days of Making The Video on MTV. Guys like Hype and Dave Meyers inspired a lot of young kids during this era to become music video directors...

This guy is pretty cool.

He mocked nicki minaj.

[–]happywafflez 65 points66 points ago

Okay I agree with this guy, a little bit of a hijack incoming but it makes sense here.

|disclaimer| I am not a Nicki Minaj fan but I am a huge hip-hop head. |disclaimer|

This song is intentionally bad. It's an ongoing feud between Lil' Kim and Miss Minaj. Basically this song is written about how Nicki can put out any piece of shitty music and it will still be better than anything Lil' Kim can come back at her with. The main point of this is that this music is not made for your teenager Redditor who only listens to Arcade Fire and Radiohead. Bottom line is it's essentially a shitty attempt at satire. Nicki is obviously not taking herself seriously (I think the song is shit) but she is trying to portray that her shittiest sounding song is still better.

Grain of salt gents.

[–]Semajal 10 points11 points ago

Interesting then. Did you see what she got up to at the Grammys? Is she also genuinely insane?

[–]14hatch14pool 5 points6 points ago

Just marketing mate.

[–]dmcnelly 2 points3 points ago

Is she also genuinely insane?

Oh my, yes, yes she is. Girl is batshit insane.

[–]benchmarke 9 points10 points ago

This guy is pretty cool. He mocked the guy mocking nicki minaj.

[–]SpringInJapan 45 points46 points ago*

I'm still amazed this got past dozens of producers/writers/artists and was still deemed worthy of release.

[–]Bubblebath_expert 6 points7 points ago

If you are referring to the quality of the song, they let it go because they thought it would yield money, and they're probably right.

If you are referring to the grammar, deletion of the copula is very common in African American Vernacular English. It's not a mistake, it's a dialectical difference. Simply, they let it pass because the song is (partly) in AAVE.

[–]christopherdlane 4 points5 points ago

In their defense, I don't think the song would work as well if she was saying "You're a stupid hoe, you're a, you're a stupid hoe". It doesn't flow right.

[–]Paul8787 23 points24 points ago

ummm how does it work at all now? It sounds terrible as is.

[–]Awfy 5 points6 points ago

However both you and you're are single syllable words so it wouldn't affect how it sounds.

[–]Sloppy1sts 8 points9 points ago

Also, "Ho". As in, short for wHOre. A hoe is a garden tool.

Not Hoe, it's Ho. A Hoe is a gardening tool. The plural of Ho has an E though: Hoes.

[–]Tigeroovy 1 point2 points ago

I have yet to see a compelling reason why this lady exits.

[–]fuckingcreep 1 point2 points ago

I don't really listen to Nicki, but I do listen to trance music and other electronic music, which people criticize as being too repetitive; and punk music, which people find too noisy; and rap music, which a lot of people like except on reddit where we generally, other than r/hiphopheads and related subreddits, seem to hate it. So, I can't really criticize anybody because rocks and glass houses.

[–]JayHChrist 3 points4 points ago

I'd rather listen to Justin Bieber than this crap. Atleast he sings instead of making these noises.

[–]jenntotheferr 5 points6 points ago

To me, she sounds like she's actually saying "You a stupid how."

And I'm just sitting there thinking "We'll you can't even say 'hoe' correctly. Jerk."

[–]miked1136 1 point2 points ago

because the rest of her songs use perfect english

[–]yemd 2 points3 points ago

I'm not sure how it is possible that she became famous.

[–]AlexanderDavidBand 5 points6 points ago

[–]KantLemon 7 points8 points ago

By a shit ton. I'd much rather listen to how everyone is looking forward to the weekend then listen to accusations of being a mentally impaired prostitute by a hypocrite.

[–]nadeemo 6 points7 points ago

It's funny that she made a song about herself.

[–]pizzaman42 4 points5 points ago

There is something deeply unsettling about Nicki Minaj.

This may sound strange but I have the feeling she will commit suicide within the next 10 years.

[–]Hekki27 1 point2 points ago

We can only hope

[–]HummusBandit 0 points1 point ago

More like starting her all female version of Cash Money Records and getting stupid rich like Lil Wayne did. As her lover Drake said, "Never thoughts of suicide, I'm too alive."

[–]Ultra-ChronicMonstah 1 point2 points ago

It's also spelled 'ho'. A hoe is a gardening tool.

[–]johnshop 1 point2 points ago

i am still surprised by the fact that so much people actually think she is talented, even here on reddit...

[–]Dzerzhinsky 10 points11 points ago

The first time I heard this was the first time I ever went beyond personally not enjoying a song and into the realm of genuinely not comprehending how a song got made. It was also the first time I ever truly understood parents chastising their child for listening to 'noise'.

[–]mattfbasler 4 points5 points ago

For a long time, I've felt like there's a music industry "Price is Right" going on. All these music industry people get together and have to get the worst song possible that will still get famous. There's probably a complicated algorithm that figures who is the winner but level of terribleness, level of fame, and the gap in between are major factors (maybe stupid video gets you some points, or bizarre marketing).

Anyway, like the Price is Right, some people will just "bet the dollar" and back a really good song hoping everyone else picks a song that is just too stupid to ever be a hit.

[–]Ratava 5 points6 points ago

I mean, it's important to note that this song is not a hit. Check the like/dislike ratio on the music video, and note that it didn't impact Billboard at all. It's a buzz single that got critically slammed.

So there's hope yet.

[–]johnshop 1 point2 points ago

this is actually, talking songs wise isn't the worst there's one that goes as follows: Ass so fat, all these bitches' p-ssies is throbbin' Bad bitches, I'm your leader, Phantom by the meter Somebody point me to the best ass-eater I Tell 'im "Pussy clean!" I tell them "Pussy squeaky!" Niggas give me brain 'cause all of them niggas geeky If he got a mandingo, then I buy him a dashiki And bust this p-ssy open in the islands of Waikikiiiiii… Kiss my ass and my anus, 'cause it's finally famous And it's finally soft, yeah, it's finally solved! I don't know, man, guess them ass shots were off! Bitches ain't poppin', Google, my ass Only time you on the net is when you Google my ass

really? i really have no faith in humanity for thinking she is somehow talented... -_-

[–]Ratava 1 point2 points ago

She actually is. This song doesn't show it, but check out her verse in Jay and Kanye's "Monster."

Try to contort your voice, with such intensity, the same way she does. It does take talent.

This song though... meh...

[–]shedang 1 point2 points ago

Nicki Minaj's ass is way too big.

[–]msgiovanna100 0 points1 point ago

reminds me of this

edit: (looks like Steve_the_Scout posted this before me, sorry)

[–]beeng11 0 points1 point ago

this made me end up watching the video, I'm honestly scared that 34 million people have too

[–]that1machine 0 points1 point ago

I can't upvote this enough.

[–]Mxblinkday 0 points1 point ago

I was thinking that this was going to be a pic or GIF of a scene from The Cat In The Hat...

[–]Shippage 0 points1 point ago

She looks like a fucked up black asari with weird pink hair.

[–]GARBAGEDAYY 0 points1 point ago

I doubt we'll be seeing that little girl belting this song out on Ellen anytime soon. I actually don't know how Nicki can meet that little girl then want to release a song like this. Is it career sabotaging month or something? FirstNicki with this crap, then Rihanna working with Chris.

Also I think most of the views on the video were from when it first premiered and no one knew how awful it would actually be.

[–]Gilgaland 0 points1 point ago

In all honesty; when Nicki Minaj doesn't concentrate on her stupid and crazy alter-egos, she can actually sing relatively well (in my opinion)

Blah blah blah AAVE should not be disqualified because it makes use of unconventional, if still communicable, English sentence structures. /condensedrant

[–]sir-potato-head 0 points1 point ago

pretty depressing to know that this has more views than any song by, for example, The Black keys (or insert your favorite band here)

[–]sweetsweetcoffee 0 points1 point ago

That's reddit in a nutshell.

[–]Hu_dat 0 points1 point ago

I have a hard time thinking how she would justify calling someone else a ho

[–]ugotopia123 0 points1 point ago

I always hear "You a stupid how."
