Oscar Wilde had it right (imgur.com)

Oscar Wilde, strangely enough, flirted with Roman Catholicism his entire life and was baptized a Catholic on his deathbed, probably at his own request. He was a big fan of the Pope at the time (Pius IX), and was impressed and enjoyed a lot of theology and religious literature during his life.
[–]Melnorme 17 points18 points19 points 7 months ago
Well, it did house the world's largest gay community at the time.
[–]rufud 7 points8 points9 points 7 months ago
It's true, he was hardly a champion of atheism. Not only that but the quote isn't necessarily anti-religion. Think about it. I do not, however, know the actual context of the quote.

On the other hand, his De Profundis isn't awful by any mean. Many even consider it to be his magnum opus.
[–]Augrills 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Just because it's influenced by and heavily delves into Christianity does not mean it's awful. There's no way of saying anything Wilde ever wrote is "awful" in the technical literary sense.
[–]IgosduIkana 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
Why not?
It's stylistically a children's book. A children's book is intended to be ham-handed.

Shut the fuck up you don't know anything.

[–]regalnerd 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
I'll admit, I was dissapointed when I realized that /r/gonewilde wasn't about Olivia Wilde.
[–]Murrabbit 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
I'll admit it, I could not be more delighted that it's Oscar Wilde.
[–]mightyjake 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
TIL that that's a thing.
[–]oscarwildecat 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
I love basically everything about Oscar Wilde, which is why I picked this username even though I'm a chick.
[–]nickohlus 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
I think Oscar Wilde was a genius.

How do you make a table in a reddit comment?
[–]SimilarImage 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
It'd probably be easier to look at an example, go to KarmaDecay and click one of the recent images. Next, find and click the link that says 'share on reddit'. That should open a box of text, it's a table when submitted. The first line is the head, the rest are rows. Hope that helps.

You really don't need to be a dick about it
Oh god this is hilarious.
[–]bindtortureandkill 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
I upvoted you for being hilarious. New to reddit?

This quote is fascinating because it appeals to confirmation bias on both sides:
Atheist side: The cat is imaginary and the blind man found it because he's using his imagination. I like this quote because it shows that religious people are delusional.
Theist side: The cat is supernatural and the blind man found it because he has a connection to the supernatural. I like this quote because it shows that atheists can't see the truth.
[–]flabbigans 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
If he's blind then the blackness of the cat and the room seems irrelevant.
[–]inikul 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
I wondered this on the last post of it. Never found out and just got downvoted lol
[–]f3n2x 5 points6 points7 points 7 months ago*
It's called a hyperbole and is a literary technique. You're welcome.
And since the man finds the cat that isn't even in there anyway, it's also irrelevant whether he is blind or not, the room is dark or not or he is even looking for it or not.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
He was a cool looking dude in that pic. He looked totally hip.
[–]robbor 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Schrödinger's cat!
[–]Purpole 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Oh look, it's Naniwa
[–]Gothars 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
Thats actually not thoroughly thought through. In a dark room a blind man would have a better chance than a seeing man to find a black cat. In fact, the seeing man might even deny the existence of the cat, because he can't hear and feel it like that blind man can.
I think we should not use this specific quote anymore.
[–]tsjone01 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Considering religious claims are of matters outside the physical realm, that's surprisingly astute. The idea that something outside of our existence created reality, and that the soul transcends that reality would fit cleanly with that.
[–]BigBreakfast 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
As far as I know, Oscar Wilde was actually a very religious man. He certainly wrote a lot on the subject.
[–]Nessie 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
By that measure, Bertrand Russel was a very religious man, and Sam Harris is too.
Oh I didn't mean to imply that BECAUSE he wrote about religion, he must be religious. Sorry about that.
Though, I would say the tone with which he wrote about religion speaks volumes about how he felt. There's also the rumor that he was baptized on his death bed. Though, I don't care whether he was religious or not, even if he was, I still love his writing.

He looks like Howard from Big Bang Theory! :)
You mean Howard from the Big Band Theory looks like Oscar Wilde. I don't really see it, but my brother dated a guy who looked just like Oscar Wilde. Ended with domestic abuse. I miss that guy. He always served fancy cheeses, and would get high while we stared at his 40 gallon fish tank for hours.
You are correct, Howard looks like Oscar Wilde. Cheese, doobies and fish tanks are a good match. :)
[–]Divinar 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
No, they claim to have found the cat - but no one has ever seen it!
[–]3M0N1C 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Oscar Wilde is my husbando. <3
[–]onlychildsyndrome 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
He looks freakishly like Howard from TBBT...cannot unsee.
[–]Iron-Charioteer 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Don't read De Profundis. It's Wilde at his worst and least whimsical and most religious. An atheist might try and point to cause and effect - let me do so now. He got boring when he got Jesus.
[–]Ragnalypse 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Pretty sure you misinterpreted this quote.
