Firefox, Chrome, and IE9 does this. Three of the most popular browsers used works like this, now what browser was your friend using?

Did not test Safari and Opera as I have neither installed.

EDIT: Opera has this functionality too (Typhzorz), and Safari will have it in its next update (ThatOneOverWhere)

[–]Typhzorz 11 points12 points ago

It works on Opera.

[–]FappingAsYouReadThis 1 point2 points ago

Opera often seems overlooked. It's my favorite browser (among the fastest, stable, some nifty features, etc.)

[–]hairy_eyeball 0 points1 point ago

...it works on Opera with bells on. <3 having single-character prefixes to search whichever sites I please (wolfram, urbandictionary, images, tineye...).

Oh, and duckduckgo with its !bang thing is pretty cool as default search, since that adds a shitbucket more sites to the puny list I've got set up.

[–]Shoemakb[S] 12 points13 points ago

safari

[–]ThatOneOverWhere 2 points3 points ago

Funnily enough this exact functionality is coming in the next main Safari update iirc.

Though personally I haven't used anything but Chrome for about 2 years, and carry it around along with a bunch of other useful program's and stuff on a small flash drive just incase.

"New revolutionary feature"

[–]robin5670 5 points6 points ago

Apple's new revolutionary multi touch gesture touch pads No. Nobody really gives an entire flying fuck about apple's new touchpad... Try getting your most expensive product above a 3 ghz processor and then we'll talk.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Tell him to not be an idiot. It's way worse than IE9, and hate to admit it, but IE10 will actually be good.

[–]Massless 0 points1 point ago

If firefox implemented pinch-zoom and rubberband scrolling I would change in a heartbeat. I'm always so disappointed by Safari.

[–]rustid -4 points-3 points ago

Safari sucks anyways

[–]Nocturne9 4 points5 points ago

Safari...my friend adamantly uses Safari and I do this all the time.

I wanted you downvote you

[–]YOUR-UNCLE -3 points-2 points ago

I use safari.

[–]SensualAtelier 2 points3 points ago

Can't go to IE9 on XP. We still have XP machines at work. I do this all the time. It drives me nuts.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

IE9 is actually pretty good (hurts to admit), and IE10 will be worth using.

[–]DoneRedditAlready 0 points1 point ago

yup.

[–]Mustkunstn1k 0 points1 point ago

That's only the case if they actually have updated their browsers.

[–]Mustkunstn1k 0 points1 point ago

What exactly am I supposed to do with that? People still have older browsers all the time. Not even IE, but also old Firefox'es and so on. Some people don't care about newer versions, because they don't have any issues.

And I'm not gonna do a upgrade if I only need to use the computer for like 30 seconds and it doesn't bother them anyway.

[–]Virtureally -1 points0 points ago

Just saying that your point was already made and discussed and the top comment, which said the same thing as yours was downvoted so much that it was hidden.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points ago

Opera ftw. Fantastic browser!

[–]gridlinked 11 points12 points ago

I don't get it. I use chrome, opera, Firefox, and ie on a daily basis and they all use the address bar for searches.

[–]Patagonicus 4 points5 points ago

For me it’s more the keywords for other sites. Especially "w search term" for Wikipedia and "wa search term" for WolframAlpha.

[–]bastard_thought 9 points10 points ago

Opera is my favorite. Any takers?

[–]FetidFeet 7 points8 points ago

When I do is on my wife's computer it brings up Comcast search. Makes me want to puke.

[–]yung1522 6 points7 points ago

I believe you can setup static DNS addresses to bypass that dumbass comcast search.

Google Addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

"By using Google Public DNS you can:

Speed up your browsing experience.
Improve your security.
Get the results you expect with absolutely no redirection."

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]m42a 1 point2 points ago

Are they preconfiguring connections to the DNS servers, connections to the sites, or connections between the DNS servers?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]m42a 0 points1 point ago

So it appears they don't do any preconfiguration at all, they just do really aggressive caching. But that was an interesting article, so thanks.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

have google track your every click

Add that. Oh wait, you have chrome anyway. Never mind.

[–]FetidFeet 0 points1 point ago

Thanks. I will try that on the router.

[–]rokic 5 points6 points ago*

if it's firefox do this

type into your address bar

about:config.

type into the filter

keyword.URL.

once you have found it there, modify the string in there and replace it with:

http://www.google.com/search?btnG=Google+Search&q=

[–]_lemons 0 points1 point ago

Thank you so much!

[–]lanzapan 7 points8 points ago

Fuckin chrome users thinking they're so damn perfect

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

THANK YOU

[–]ShandoRaynor 1 point2 points ago

Is there any easy way to block all ( or at least 99% like AddBlock Pro for FF ) in Chrome? By "easy", I mean as easy as it is for FF. It takes less than a minute to set up in FF. I guess I would be happy if I could just add a facebook filter.

[–]whats_goin_on 1 point2 points ago

I believe this is what you are after.

[–]abstract17 0 points1 point ago

So on my friend's computer, adblock on chrome doesnt handle pandora or youtube. These are the two biggest benefits of it on firefox, it's not quite the same.

[–]halalburgher 1 point2 points ago

Worse at work. Type in search terms in IE, comes through on Bing *shivers

[–]Clockian 1 point2 points ago

Silly Chrome user, thinking his browser came up with this stuff first.

[–]Zaitsev11 1 point2 points ago

Happened to me 3x last night at a friend's house. Sad thing is I kept doing it lol

[–]RESET-REWIND 1 point2 points ago

FUCK YOU SAFARI AND ALL Y'ALL MACBOOK FAGS!

/s

[–]FlyingSkyWizard 0 points1 point ago

Does Chrome have a goddamn bookmarks sidebar yet? no? - sticking with firefox.

[–]Rrtard_Picard 0 points1 point ago

And they always say something condescending, like poorly explaining the difference between browsers and search engines.

[–]yurf 0 points1 point ago

Legitimately have a friend whom I went to his house, got on his computer, and he uses IE. He also had no idea what VLC was.

Oh, he also has built 2 computers worth $1000+

[–]babyzeeps 0 points1 point ago

I die a little inside when I use a browser without hoverzoom.

[–]monkeyfett8 0 points1 point ago

This is why I hate that I have IE7 at my office. I mean really IT? Really? 7?

[–]Masturdate 0 points1 point ago

So this pirate walks into a bar with a steering wheel in his pants. Confused, the bartender asks "Hey bud, why do you have a steering wheel in your pants?"

"I don't know" the pirate says, "but it's driving me nuts!"

[–]nimbril 0 points1 point ago

What's worse is when you search and it takes you to bing. Seriously WHY do they do that to themselves...

[–]hj17 0 points1 point ago

I just use the search bar in the upper right corner.

[–]disharmonia -1 points0 points ago

It drives me nuts when I sit down at any computer that doesn't have Opera. Not being able to do short searches is awful.

I hate when my friends point to their drop down search bar and say "Oh, just click on that...now click on YouTube...now you can search YouTube! Neat, huh?"

Bitches, on my machine that's just y in the address bar.

[–]gheis 1 point2 points ago

And w for Wikipedia and sw for Wookieepedia and r for Reddit and imdb for IMDB and ma for Memory Alpha and gfaq for GameFAQs and d for Demonoid and eve for Eve-Wiki and and and and and and

I love keyword searches, especially integrated into the address bar.

[–]Wally_B 5 points6 points ago

hate to break your bubble but firefox, chrome, and even older versions of IE have short search.

you are not a unique flower because you use opera

[–]Shoemakb[S] 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me of when I was at school and borrowed a friend's computer to show our table a youtube video. I did what I always did on my machine, typed in 'you' and hit enter. Ends up his most frequently visited 'you' was YouPorn, and everyone involved had a good laugh at his expense.

[–]_pulsar -1 points0 points ago

It really drives you nuts?

I'm guessing this happens like once ever few months at most, and when it does it adds like one second to what you're doing.

[–]disharmonia 2 points3 points ago

...the...the title of the post is "This drives me absolutely nuts" >>;;

[–]anothermonth 0 points1 point ago

The difference between a decent browser and chrome, is that every single key press in address bar is not being sent to google. This is default behavior. I don't give a shit that you can change it in options. The fact that google defaults to this demonstrates what kind of scumbags are developing this browser.

Remember all those IE toolbars in early 2000s trying to record your activity? Since when does this not counts as spyware anymore?

[–]seruch 1 point2 points ago

Since google.

[–]HeroofDarkness -2 points-1 points ago

Yes!!!! This a billion times over!!!
