Pfft. Quitting is easy. I've done it five times in the past year.

Electronic cigs. Wife and I were pack a day +. We both quit in 2-3 months.

Totally agree. I switched to an eSmoke just to test it out, but once my mind realized I was just "smoking" a placebo, I dropped it without a second thought. I still get the urge, but who doesn't?

See proof smokers are the worst quitters....they can't even quit quitting...

I quit nearly two years ago, and I've had nearly a pack of cigarettes "relapsing" over the course of those two years. I don't think the desire ever goes away.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Where do you find cigarettes in smaller denominations? When I relapse (about every day of the week) I have to buy an entire pack and the smallest pack I can find is 20 (which is okay, because it's my last pack I will ever buy) which lasts me until the next day.

[–]xyzornat 0 points1 point ago

When I absolutely cannot avoid the urge, I find a random smoker to give me a cigarette. If I bought a pack, the whole thing would come crashing down around me. Also, I don't go to the bars much anymore, and all of my friends watch me like a hawk. However, and I don't suggest that you go this route, I had to quit because I have heart problems, and smoking is one of the leading causes of heart disease. I had to choose what I really wanted most out of life.

I was a 3.5 pack a day smoker (Export A Green King, if you know Canadian cigarettes. Otherwise known as Green Death).

Quit in 3 weeks due to Champix, and barely had to work at it. If you're serious about quitting, talk to the doc.

My whole family uses me as an example: "if he can quit, ANYONE can quit".

It might take years, but that feeling does subside. You get to the point eventually when you don't want a smoke even when you're drinking. Hang in there.

[–]fiszch 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've been quit for five years now. I still dream about it from time to time, and I always want one when drinking, and I think I always will. It's just that I'm stronger than the urge these days.

No doubt it's different for all of us.

[–]kungtotte 4 points5 points ago

My grandpa hadn't smoked for 20 years and he would still find himself reaching into the breast pocket on his shirt from time to time because that's where he used to keep his smokes.

[–]bindtortureandkill 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought that would never end, but now, i can get all but the drunkest and not feel the urge, if i'm out on the town drinking the cravings come earlier, but i can drink quite a lot in the home and not feel the urge (and then nicotine inhalers get me through that rare occasion).

You have to train yourself to think you dont want one, and you believe yourself after a while.

[–]weebeasties 2 points3 points ago

I quit about a year ago and the thought of smoking a cigarette makes me ill. Don't think I'll ever have the urge again.

[–]Subhazard 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, you're just lying to yourself... it'll come back to bite you in the ass later.

Better to approach the addiction honestly. It's a demon. Defeat it.

[–]weebeasties 0 points1 point ago

Maybe, but so far so good. If the urge does come back, I wish I didn't give away the e-cig kit.

I quit in January after about 5 years of smoking. I was kinda suprised that it was such an easy task for me. Now I have no desire to smoke whatsoever, even when drinking alcohol.

[–]bindtortureandkill 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Congrats!

Some people have smoked for 20 years, its much more a part of their memories and habits, associations with things, it takes longer to kick it the longer you smoke. Especially if you smoked heavy the whole time. Not so much if you were a sporadic smoker.

[–]bluke123 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks! I'm glad it "only" took me 5 years to realize how unnecessary smoking really is, when it wasn't already damn near impossible to stop.

All the nicotine is out of your body already so you are done with withdrawals. Everything from here on out is behavioral. Keep in mind that cravings last a max of 3 minutes each. Get through it one craving at a time. Also, every time you do something that triggers a craving and you don't smoke in response to that trigger, you break the association so it gets easier and easier the longer you go without smoking. For me, it took about 3 months to be pretty much normal and I smoked for 15 years. You can do it- you just have to commit fully to NEVER smoking again. You know that part of your brain that just freaked a bit reading that last sentence? That is what you have to learn to ignore. Ignore it long enough and it will go away and you can join the ranks of those of us who can't believe we ever smoked.

smoked 2 packs of marlboro red a day for 8 years. gave up cold turkey in the middle of the day 3 years ago. haven't had one since. the only real advice anybody can give you about quitting is, either you are man enough to do it, or you aren't. if you fail, don't bother trying again until you are less of a pussy.

Sounds like an ad for a cigarette company. Never stop trying to quit smoking, you are doing really well this time. Every time you try to quit you are preparing for the time you are successful. There is no reason not to try to quit. You will quit. Nearly everyone does. If you are coping on willpower alone then good for you. If you need help then do whatever it takes. The cost of quitting is always less than the cost of smoking.

If you only knew how wrong you are about that. In 2009 I suffered a heart attack caused by 35 years of smoking.

I had a few days in the ICU to think about how much better off I would have been had I stopped earlier. It was a real treat explaining to my 4 yo son that his Dad was unlikely to ever be able to play sport with him again.

So Fuck You and your expert advice.

It took an awful lot of Valium ( great way to do it but very addictive also) to give up smoking. Best thing I ever did? Yes. Do I still crave? Occasionally, but the fact that I can taste food, excersize and don't fucking stink like a tramp helps! And yes, (before someone asks) I do tell people to quit and if anyone smokes near my kids they get asked once to stop and after that the cigarette and packet get tossed into the nearest bin - there's nothing quite like an ex smoker.

Btw what's with the personal attack onononon? Too fucking lazy to actually give up the cancer and start to live yourself? You are losing the argument here - never stop giving up, one day it will stick.

Ex smoker of 3 years and smoker for 31 years. Still cancer free (touch wood)

[–]onanonanonaonon -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yeah, if it took you a heart attack after 35 years to quit smoking. then you actually don't have any idea what you are talking about. some of us aren't pussy ass pieces of shit and we have the balls required to quit before it gets to that. some of us have the will power required to run our own lives. perhaps if you weren't such a pussy, you'd be able to play ball with your son every day.

Sorry, I missed the part where you told us when and how you quit ...

To anyone trying to quit the ciggies, ignore superman/supergirl above. He/she's got absolutely no idea.

Nicotine is an addictive substance and willpower does not work for many people. If you rely on willpower alone you are likely to fail.

BTW onandon I did a lot of rehab. I'd whip you any day!

[–]onanonanonaonon -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

After I decided to quit, I didn't smoke any more cigarettes. That's how you quit. If you need people to constantly hold your hand, then you are just enabling yourself to fail. And you're right, quitting is not easy for many people. Unfortunately, those people are simply not fit for survival of the fittest. It's simple biology.

BTW all internet tough guys are full of shit, gtfo.

Have you ever considered a job in social work or psychology? With your in depth understanding of the human psyche you'll go far. Actually, better still, something in drug counseling. If that doesn't work out, you could always try a stint in the Messiah business, you talk like your Gods gift. Apart from quitting smoking, what else did you do on your 16th birthday?

I quit smoking for Lent. I could not possible agree more.

I've never been so cranky. I've seriously considered killing my wife four separate times today. (Stupid non-smoking spouse, can't understand the pain of this!) I've even been plotting where to hide her body and whatnot.

Query, for those who have managed: how long will I be this, erm, homicidal?

Symptoms of withdrawal for me: I get jittery at first, agitated and I don't know where to put my hands. The reasonable voice that once told me all the reasons that told me why to quit is muted. The desire is like a very convincing guy who just makes the entire choice of whether to smoke or abstain emotional instead of rational. The upsetting of the chemical balance in my body's motoric and proprioceptive nicotinic receptors leads me to become clumsy, and this is not entirely attributable to Murphy's Law, I will have more accidents in withdrawal. I will bang my head, stub my toes and bang my knees on table legs. And I become infuriated. I will yell, punch surfaces of higher density than my fist and I will feel alone and misunderstood. No one understands me, and they don't see how reasonable my anger is. When I punch the kitchen counter so the skin of my fists cracks and bleeds profusely, my SO refuses to admit that it was a rational reaction to having over-fried whatever i was cooking. I feel like my heart is racing, pumping too much blood, I get no good boners that aren't made for fucking, because I can't attain the appropriate level of pleasure. If I beat off, my dick feels rock hard in the shaft and uninterested in the tip. My hands and feet are unreasonably warm, and I need water. Lots of it. Gallons, I've never been so thirsty, wait, I'm sick, I drank too much water, the urge wasn't thirst! Must've been hunger. Eat almonds, sausages and bread. God, this is the fourth meal today and it isn't even lunchtime! What have I forgotten? There is something nagging at the back of my brain! Something I need, but I'm too full to eat or drink and I have a blister on my Johnson. You need a cigarette. This isn't the time to quit, you can quit tomorrow. When you made the decision to quit, who knew you'd have this kind of day today? You just had bad luck and quit on the wrong day. Better quit tomorrow. If you just smoke then everything that went wrong today will magically seem to not have happened. Postpone it. Have one. Buy a pack, enjoy yourself... You owe this pleasant habit a final good bye... Yeees, tomorrow is better. My lungs feel fine now. My heart is obviously capable of beating a mile a minute, I should choose a better day. Just one more, then I'll quit.

You know that feeling you get when you know there's something you have to do? Something you're procrastinating?

Kinda feel it in the back of your head and neck?

Imagine that feeling, multiplied by about 10.

A nicotine buzz feels like an electric blanket surgically inserted into every nerve. You only get them if you're a light smoker, and usually once in the morning and that's about it.

[–]Teotwawki69 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It may differ from person to person, but I've found that my addiction was entirely psychological, and not physical. I started by deciding I was going to quit and leaving the cigs at home and, without having them within physical reach I had no desire for them. Of course, after a day or two, I realized that not smoking left me in a constant state of "cranked up higher than fuck," as in energetic and perky, and that was a lot more fun -- so, I suppose, I may have discovered an alternate addiction by becoming addicted to not smoking and, rather, feeling like I'm on high doses of caffeine and speed without any of the negative side effects of actually being on caffeine and speed.

Your mileage may vary, and I'm still waiting for my bowels to rebel in a truly ass-ripping bout of constipation. To be continued...

[–]DeepRoot 0 points1 point ago

It's a terrible feeling of your body wanting to do something that your mind knows is bad for it, talking yourself out of it, and then having your body start the feeling all over again. Logic goes out of the window and the need for nicotine becomes overwhelming. The mind only wins when a conscious decision is made and quitting is the verdict.

I am 35. I started smoking when I was 12 and quit January 2010. It wasn't easy but I did it with nicotine gum. I still chew a few pieces a week when I have a bad craving. My dad quit nearly 40 years ago and he says he still wants one from time to time.

You just have to be tougher than the want. Just imagine if every time you saw a beautiful woman you pulled out your dick and jerked off right there. You wouldn't do that so why do you have to have a cigarette just because you would like to have one right then.

I decided to quit smoking and caffeine at the same time, and yeah - the first week was rough. Crazy ass dreams, panic attacks, constipation, mood swings like crazy.. To top it off my fiancee was several months pregnant with a boy and had regular pregnant rage fits. Once the first week was over, bad things slowly stopped happening. Now (2 years later) I might smoke one every once in a while when I have had enough beer to give me a strong buzz, but there is no other situation I face that brings about any urges or cravings any more. I find myself generally annoyed when my fiancee smokes now, but never envious. I basically quit because I was tired of blowing money on coffee and cigarettes every day and getting virtually nothing out of it but bad breath, a cough, and the sudden urge to shit.

I quit two weeks ago next Monday, and did it cold turkey, and learned something interesting... easiest times to not smoke -- when I wasn't at home, but when I was around co-workers to whom I said, "Hey, I quit." Still went on non-smoking "smoke" breaks, but had no problem not lighting up the morning butts on the drive in, or at the eleven o'clock break, or at lunch, or at four p.m., or on the drive home...

Then, home alone, fucking temptation, because there was no one there to give the look of disapproval. And the major thing I noticed was that I started to feel like I was on speed all the time, but decided that this was not a bad thing, because the hyperactivity made me breeze through work and not notice I had skipped my usual break time because, well -- remove cigs, add energy. "I would have gone out forty-five minutes ago to smoke, but I didn't and I didn't notice? YEEEEEEEAHHH!"

But... it would be much more helpful if I had someone to give me the Look of Disapproval if I'm tempted when I'm not surrounded by friends or co-workers. So... want to become Quit Buddies? PM me. Maybe we can help each other during those difficult points. But, jeebus, I'll tell you one thing -- my sense of smell has come back with a vengeance, which is both good and bad. Good side, food tastes 1000 times better. Bad side -- bitches in the office wear way too much perfume, and a couple of them really, really need to douche more. Neutral... I smell burning pancakes and cinnamon everywhere now. What's up with that?

Once you get past that first 7 days, the craving lessens quite a bit but I don't think the urge really ever diminishes. 2009 was my first cigarette smoke free year but I still get the, "I want a cigarette" feeling from time to time. After reading these comments I'm beginning to think that cigarette addiction is a lot more powerful than alcohol. I drank a herculean amount for almost two decades straight and stopped about a year ago (after it nearly killed me) and didn't give it much thought after about a month. These stories about still instinctively reaching for cigarettes 20 years later are fucking bonkers by comparison.

Quit myself about 6 months ago. You are going to find there are three stages in a smokers life.

Before they smoke: Smoke smells gross

While they smoke: Can't smell it

After they quit: Smells fucking great!

EDIT: Formatting.

The worst part is over. But it still won't be fun for a while, when I quit I ate baby carrots all day, this might help.

Wait until the dreams about smoking start, that will really mess with you. FYI I've been nicotine free for 19 months.

I quit 6 weeks ago. I still get cravings. Saying to myself that the feelings werent real, that my mind was only creating it, helped me get through the roughest times. whyquit.com has some good tools as well. It feels pretty good most of the time, but I still miss it while drinking, golfing, or in the morning.

Aloso, forgot to add but take it one day at a time. It seems like a much less daunting task when you are thinking every day "I'm not going to smoke today" versus "I'm not going to smoke ever again" even though the goal is the same.

The first 3 days are the hardest. After that, it's still fucking hard, about 90%. After a few weeks it's better, and after a few months it's easier.

The most important thing is to interpret setbacks as setbacks, not as failure, and keep going.

good on you. i've tried quitting myself numerous times in vain but I don't let it get me down. i have heard it takes an average of trying to quit ten times to be successful. don't know if thats true or not but it made me feel a little better when I kept going back

Here.

Skit in a nutshell: Man owns a concrete company. Customers call him to complain about his company's various fuck ups and tell him "Fuck you". Man says "No problem" and goes apeshit.

It gets better in increments, friend.

For months after I quit smoking (cigs), whenever I saw someone light up I would have the strongest urge to smack the shit out them and run off with their ciggie.

Now I just sit back and feel superior in every way...

I just started again about a month ago after not smoking for a solid two years :/ I'm gutted. Hang in there because for the longest time, even the smell of smoke made me feel sick.

Stay strong - I haven't had a smoke since about 4:30am New Years morning.... mind over matter! - also, if you have a smartphone, i strongly suggest an app that keeps you in tune with stats etc - it helped me - and gum, toothpicks, straws... that's about it

Stick with it. I smoked for over 20+ years and this June will be my 2nd year smoke free. It will get better. Get mad and don't let the addiction continue to control you. Take that control back.
