the fog is absolutely terrifying; you never know what's coming and how it's going to promptly rape you

I love that half the time they're just fucking with you, so you never know for sure if there's a boss on the other side, but you expect it every time.

Then OH GOD A HEALTH BAR FUCK FUCK FUCK

[–]Eldritchsense 5 points6 points ago

I've found most of the fog doors that didn't contain bosses were either there to activate a one-time event (hellkite landing on the bridge then taking off to his next location, at the very start of undead burg), or to mark off different areas for each location (you can throw down your summon sign on one side, but cross this threshold and it'll disappear because it's a new part of that location)

But my first play-through? Absolutely terrified of each and every one of them.

I swear to god I'd pay $60 for Dark Souls on PC even though the game is already beaten. Fucking bonus if they add in extras.

My console is offline so I don't get to have the full experience on console :( :(

I'm still hoping that either Dark Souls comes to PC, or the likely sequel will.

Namco Bandai did say they took notice of the "Bring Dark Souls to PC" petition, and thought it was a wonderful idea. Didn't say if it would happen, though.

[–]mafaraxas 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I love it when developers phrase things that way.

"Oh, we just realized there's a relatively large market over here that we could be selling units to! What an excellent and original idea that we might make some more money and fans. We couldn't have possibly already thought about this."

[–]Endymion86 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be fair, Namco Bandai is not the developer of Dark Souls, but rather the Publisher. From Software is the developer.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Actually, in this case, I expect it's more along the lines of "we can either fit a mediocre PC port into the standard release cycle... or we can spend a bunch more time on it after the console release if the game isn't a flop, and do a second release and get way more free marketing."

[–]hubilation 14 points15 points ago

Someone should show them how much the guys who made Alan Wake made in like three days on PC.

I know how you feel. I suspect that Dark Souls is the game I have been so desperately looking for in the bleak, post-WoW wasteland that my life has become, but I can't justify purchasing a console for one game.

Or can i?

As someone who has played it on PS3, I wish it would too. The frame rate can be abysmal in areas, I don't know how they could be happy with the final product.

[–]chairback 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm there right now on my first playthrough, but luckily found the shortcut through the Valley of the Drakes. it doesn't seem that bad going this route, but it sure is annoying to be poisoned and toxic as much as I am here. People seem to be pretty genuinely grateful for help with Queelag, so that's been cool! i feel like the minimal amount of emotes you have available really make those interactions meaningful. having another creature bow or wave in the midst of all the darkness that the game throws at you is some of the most meaningful communication i've ever experienced in a game :>

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Queelag is one of the best to assist with, and a great way to get Humanity if you're good enough to assist. It's great as well since you can post your sign right next to the Bonfire and have such a short way to travel.

Poison and Toxic are rife in that area - it's a blessing that the dart shooters do not respawn though! And they're worth it for the Fire Keeper's Soul beneath them.

You're absolutely correct about the interactions. I feel being invaded, bowing to each other and then battling out for five minutes until the victor is decided is really one of the most rewarding things possible.

[–]Yenzin 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, the director of the game actually apologized for the frame rate issues after the game was released. He said something like "we want to make a new game in this series but we don't think the consumers will forgive us". Good guy.

[–]kylebutts 9 points10 points ago

Good Guy Hidetaka Miyazaki.

[–]PoopyMoosh 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While the frame rates are awful in places, they are not gamebreaking and I'd bet it took lots of tweaking to get them were they are. They probably felt that they would need to sacrifice too much to reduce it any further on console hardware. So ya, pc release pls.

[–]Zeldr 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This.

The game's great though.

But when the frame rate drops, it never really effects anything for me.

[–]RockHardRetard 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I rarely experienced the FPS issues my self...

[–]PoopyMoosh 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They are rare for me in the sense that they really only happen consistently in Blighttown so far. FYI I play on a ps3 slim I got about a year and a half ago. It is possible it runs better on xbox idk. It was not unheard of for Demon's Souls to experience similar drops in fps, so I imagine they see it as a reasonable calculated cost for a more expansive world. I almost never experience similar drops in any other ps3 game I own (15 games or so).

After the massive success of Alan Wake after it's release a few weeks ago on PC, which was released TWO years ago on the Xbox 360, I think Namco will take a much closer look at the possibility of a PC port.

Especially after Kingdom of Amalur bringing fun combat to the RPG genre on PC, I think the audience is very primed for a full blown action RPG. If they don't release a port soon, they're going to miss a great opportunity.

Dark Souls is awesome and I'd rather replay it than demon's souls, it fixes some things (moon grass farming anyone?)

[–]Bloodredsandman 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Played both on Xbox, and can't decide which one is better. Best things about Skyrim are the freedom you have and time you can spend in its world. Best things about Dark Souls are the enemies and the obvious fact that the game is way harder and more challenging. In the beginning it felt really weird playing Skyrim after Dark Souls. fuck, this is easy will be the thought of many playing a 'normal' game after Dark Souls.

[–]antonbe 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I couldn't get past the 30 hour mark in Skyrim because the combat just bored me so damn much. Even though every new dungeon was exciting to discover, the thought of slogging through repetitive combat really drove me away from the game. Kingdom of Amalur, which is not as pretty or detailed, kept me entertained for far longer because of a great variety in combat.

I started out with a mage in Skyrim. I want to cast about 10 different spells every battle. I really hate all the pausing to select different spells.

[–]reducereusereanimate 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can hotkey spells, if you're bringing up your menu each time then you're doing it wrong.

[–]shadowhunter22 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you're playing on console the hotkey list is still a menu, still have to "pause" to change spells. Just takes away from the immersion in my opinion.

I picked up a 360 controller for my PC which makes the rest of the Skyrim UI much more tolerable. Now I have to decide if I want to go back to mouse + keyboard for my mage. I remember doing hotkeys for Oblivion. Will have to figure it out again for Skyrim. Thanks :)

I actually used the whole arsenal that was afforded to me except for two handed. I used magic, swords, shouts, bows, sneaking, etc... it's just, it all turned into the same thing over and over. The story just wasn't compelling enough for me to continue; for example the reasons behind the dragon's just weren't executed properly, IMO.

I'm not don with Kingdom of Amalur yet, must become level 36 first so i get the achievement, but man, it was a long time ago i wanted to replay a game once i finished it just to try out the other classes.

[–]jacobuj 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was in the same boat, but after 120 hours of Skyrim and just as much playtime if not more in Dark Souls the award goes to (drum roll please!)

Dark Souls!

The combat, the challenge, the beauty of it, but overall the polish is what put this one in the lead for me. Don't get me wrong, I love Bethesda's games, but I'm also tired of having to replay parts because the games are released with a lot of bugs. I don't hold it against them because of the amazing amount of content packed in to one title. It must take an insane amount of man hours to go through all that, but Dark Souls man.... Dark Souls...

[–]Deddan 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is what has stopped me playing Skyrim.. Keep finding unplayable quests, due to bugs, which kills the mood for me. :(

[–]jacobuj 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I didn't find as many as I thought I would, but I ran into a game breaking bug near the end of the main quest line where it conflicted with the civil war quests. I had to go back 10 hours to a previous save to be able to complete both quest lines. It was pretty frustrating. The smaller bugs I could easily dismiss, but that one was a deal breaker for me.

Dark Souls: Fantastic story and lore that isn't thrown in your face and leaves room for speculation, great combat, atmosphere, music, great everything basically. There are framerate issues in some places and the AI can be sketchy. Skyrim has mediocre writing, awful combat, it's buggy as fuck, dungeons are all copy+paste samey shit, there are a shit ton of NPCs you can't kill (big deal in an open-world RPG when you're supposed to be able to choose your actions).

[–]lysdexickovahdiin -1 points0 points ago

Intially thought you meant both souls games and was gonna down vote you. Thank zombie Jesus I kept reading, now I have to upvote and agree. Although, on a seperate note, of you start skyrim on master from the get go it has a few minutes of it being not too hard. Also if you don't exploit it or level blacksmithing

[–]TheMagicToolBus 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's a reason it was my personal GOTY instead of Skyrim.

Don't get me wrong, Skyrim was amazing. It took what Bethesda does best, and made it even better. Still, it was a very familiar game if you've ever played a Bethesda title before.

Dark Souls brings back that feeling you had the first time you played a game that completely changed your perception of what games could be. Super Mario 64 and Portal come to mind as examples. Even if you've played Demon's Souls, it's still such a unique experience.

[–]drjohnson89 4 points5 points ago

Dark Souls is the equivalent of Dwarf Fortress when compared to Skyrim. I absolutely loved Skyrim, but the hardcore aspect of Dark Souls keeps me coming back again and again.

Elder Scrolls fan here. Can anyone tell me about Dark souls? I may get it and I am interested in the basis of the story. Further, should I play Demon Souls first? Thank you for your time. Edit: I am totally getting this game.

[–]TheMagicToolBus 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

First off, no need to play Demon's Souls. There are a small handful of references, but other than similar combat / mood, there's no connection between them.

As for why it's a great game, there are many articles online that could probably sum it up better than I can. The best way I can describe it is the most visceral game I have ever played. The level design is superb, the combat is both incredibly simple and incredibly complex. The moment you get cocky the game punishes you for that. It's never cheap or random, but instead every single time you die you know exactly what you did wrong.

As for the story, which is probably one of my favorite design choices: The game world doesn't give a fuck about you. It's not an exhibit whose sole purpose is to accommodate you. It feels like a living thing that could do just as well without you. It is the epitome of the good writing convention of "Show, don't tell." There is very little dialogue, and the NPCs rarely tell you anything important outright. You never really feel welcome, but in a way that is fun and hard to explain. This may sound a little discouraging, but on the contrary it makes the world feel that much more real, because it's not a play being put on in front of you. It is something you are stuck in the middle of.

[–]god12 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually that totally sounds amazing! I am tired of being the star of the show! Getting the game. Thanks for your description.

[–]Antrix32 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Demons souls is set in a different lore setting, and you don't have to play it. However, it is a great game, and will get you into the combat of the game. However it is more frustrating.

Dark souls is an action RPG that relies heavily on being able to adapt to enemies, trial and error, and utilization of stats. The setting is dark and full of mystery, and is very nontraditional.

The game is single player mainly, unless you summon others to help in your game, or you start PvP(which involves you invading other peoples games to kill them, supper fun).

It is HARD. I would say i died at least 100 times within my first playthrough, and you will get frustrated. but from that frustration comes the best aspect of the game, defeating the challenges and finally overcoming them. Best feeling ever.

[–]god12 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]tenthousandvoices 1 point2 points ago

Its a dark, challenging, brooding game. It has a very well done combat system that gives way to intense and frustrating gameplay. The game has a huge skill cap, as people have done Level 1 runs of the entire game (to put that in perspective, I was level 90 at the end of my first playthrough). It's extremely atmospheric, and you will traverse the darkest, most foreboding areas you will ever experience, thinking to yourself "OH SHIT OH SHIT OH FUCK GET ME OUT OF HERE OH GOD WHY DON'T MAKE ME TURN THAT CORNER OH SHIT" (although Demon's Souls is a lot better in that aspect [which isn't necessary to play first, but definitely check it out if you liked Dark Souls]). The boss fights are tough, epic, and memorable. You can also play cooperatively online and take on the world of Lordran with a partner (or 2) in crime. You can also be invaded or invade others players worlds as a black phantom.

It's a fantastic game that I (and most other people who have played it) strongly recommend.

[–]sarpedonx 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You don't need to play Demon Souls.

Here's a quick summary: I spent about 3 hours one day reading up on Dark Souls in October, having never played demon souls. I bought Dark Souls that day. It was the only game I played for weeks. Logged over 200 hours onto it. I just now am playing Skyrim - which I have had since November.

[–]mikwest -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't really understand the need for these mods when localized damage doesn't exist.

Yes, making the game harder is nice and all, but when "mercenary" keeps charging at me with three arrows in the head, two in the stomach, and has about 75% remaining life, honestly, wasn't the immersion broken a WHILE ago?

[–]Harabeck 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why are you bringing up immersion when I suggest mods that affect difficulty? Some people just want a more difficult game, and immersion doesn't play into it (although I think raising the difficulty does also increase immersion just by raising the stakes of every fight). Besides, with the Deadly Combat mod I linked, your example situation would never happen (unless instead of "mercenary" you were fighting a powerful vampire or something).

[–]mikwest 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I play on master difficulty, and when beginning archery, some guy running at you with 20 arrows on his body is just ridiculous. It's not "difficult", it's just goofy... Videogame-y, and I'm talking about weaksauce humanoid opponents, not a vampire or boss character. Especially when the arrow sticks in a non-armor covered part. Damn, that riles me up. I might tone the difficulty settings down to expert on my next playthrough so that dragon shouts might be relevant this way around, as well.

So yeah, a combat realism mod would be nice. I'm not asking for VATS, but for a game with an "arrow to the knee" joke, I don't see enough enemies limping (when they do, they stand on the injured leg sometimes...) or dropping their weapons when shot through the fucking arm.

Don't get me started on dovahkin being too retarded to stab someone in the back properly until you buy a perk. Cuz plunging a knife into the bit of exposed flesh requires years of fucking practice. Or a guy you stab in his sleep, you made a critical strike but his life bar is like 80%, he wakes up, and starts fighting as if I had stabbed the pillow instead. Kinda like that scumbag DM who would ask you to roll the dice for trivial bullshit every ten minutes.

And THAT'S why I bring up immersion. I'm not anti-more hitpoints for the NPCs, but feel that skyrim could've used ragdolls for something more than fucking around with fus roh dah. Also, the "difficulty" amounts to nothing more than more hitpoints for the enemy and less damage for you in vanilla. Completely irrelevant once you've maxed out/glitched the fuck out of your smithing skill, but still annoying. Does deadly combat even it out, or simply turn NPCs into 999hitpoint targets & your lvl 81.5 character into a bitch?

[–]Harabeck 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Deadly combat only effects health in that it ups the multiplier for master difficulty mode. The main point of the mod is to make the game harder in other ways. Weapon damage is raised and armor effectiveness is down (so in effect, you could see that as lowering health). Staggering or being staggered is more common, and blocking is much more important. Trust me, it's much more enjoyable than just having enemies have more health.

Neither.

They both get royally owned by Flamelurker.

I think Nito can still fit inside the ribcage in Flamelurkers, hence cheesing his way to victory like so many have.

I'm pretty new to the game and am currently exploring the Undead Berg and all I can say about the slow moving skeletons with shields is: STOP WAITING FOR ME TO ATTACK SO I CAN EXPLOIT YOUR WEAKNESS!

Kick them! Kick them in their stupid, defensive faces and it will break their guard for the win.

Haha thanks! I find that holding the long sword with two hands lets me get in some weak damage, then they will attack and I can roll at them and swing at them from behind. Proud of myself. I got in my first riposte and parrying night. Praise the sun!

What is so great about dark souls anyway?

Is it because it's more the dark horse of the RPG series that people support it with such conviction? Or is just a really phenomenal yet undersold game?

Personally I haven't seen or heard anything unique about it, maybe if it comes to PC I'll give it a try...

[–]applesforadam 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The difficulty has been the selling point, but it's not the best that can be said about it. The world design is gorgeous. The combat system is better than any action-RPG I've played. The amount of customization and equipment variation is great. All in all, it offers gamers a great experience where the progress is more internal. I'm a console player so I can't speak about PC games, but it has been the best gaming experience I've had in a long time. There's a few good articles about it, here is one

[–]nicesalamander 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i think it is a pretty great game, there isn't much instruction so you can find your way through the world. the combat is great, your swings have weight to them and if you rush in to a situation you will die. the game looks pretty great it has a great art style and a large variety of environments.

Dark Souls has some of the most intelligent level design I've seen in a game in a while. Yes, it is fairly linear; but not by force. You COULD go in the wrong direction, but you would most likely die if you tried it. So, the game forces you to go in the direction the developer's wanted you to go in without actually forcing it upon you.

The game is also entirely based on efficiency. Its not about how much you grind, its about taking things slow and using as few resources as possible until you get to the next bonfire.

The story is also some of the most unique I've ever seen in a game. The NPCs feel as though they are going through their own little adventures while you aren't around. While Skyrim feels like a play set for the player to poke at, Dark Souls feels more like a living breathing world that exists in spite of you.

And the online play feels justified. It adds a lot to the experience, rather than being a separate experience from the game (not to say that it's necessary for the game, just to say it doesn't feel added in. It's a part of the experience.)

I could go on longer if you're still unconvinced. But Dark Souls is the most solid I've ever seen a game be in a long time.

[–]Silvard 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dark Souls isn't linear at all, you can do a shitload of "sequence" breaking and you really have a lot of choices of several ways you can tackle something or get to a place or progress the story. It's just that the level design is so good that it feels linear, and it usually takes a veteran player to fully realize (and be able to survive) the "alternate" routes.

Of course, compared to an Elder Scrolls game everything is linear.

[–]MrBlueberryMuffin 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thats what I was comparing it to ;D

Its linear like a metroid game is linear.

[–]walterpstarbuck 7 points8 points ago

This is the best article I've seen about Dark Souls: What Dark Souls is Really All About

I think it offers a very solid answer to your question.

[–]audiofreak 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wouldn't say Dark Souls is "undersold," since 1.5million units have been shipped worldwide.

For me, the difficulty is the drawing factor, but the fact that this giant world is a living being that desperately wants to kill you excites me to no end.

The combat controls are very very precise, and you can literally "feel" the difference between every weapon type, armor, etc. Every enemy acts differently and patience is key in order to learn when to dodge, block, parry or strike.

[–]Firewind 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It has more satisfying combat that skyrim, it's equally punishing to all play styles and then you have the added benefit of it not being a completely single player game. You can summon others or be invaded and do likewise.

[–]Neilfallon 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you watch Egoraptor's "Sequeltis" video on mega man, That will pretty much explain why retro gamers (and newer ones such as myself) love it. Also it's much more rewarding beating a Tough as nails boss after 20+ attempts trying to beat it rather than just seeing the big shiny glowing spot on the boss and beating them the first time.

Dark souls.

[–]Babrook 0 points1 point ago

I love Dark Souls/Demon Souls.

I don't love how many members of the community feel the need to put down every other RPG that isn't Dark Souls.

[–]TheMagicToolBus 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Odd, because I spend a lot of time in /r/darksouls, and it is by far the least ragey of any gaming subreddit I've seen.

If you're talking about the comic, it's called a joke, not a put down.

[–]Babrook 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I also post on /r/darksouls and constantly see OH GEE DARK SOULS TOTALLY RUINED [insert game here] FOR ME.

[–]Deddan 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is not so much putting down other games, it's bigging up Dark Souls.

[–]Eldritchsense 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have to second this. I post pretty much every day in /r/darksouls, and I don't see anyone putting down other games. It's actually a pretty cool community in general, and as far as gaming communities go, one of the more respectful ones.

[–]rmhawesome 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the comic was meant to illustrate how Skyrim is all about being able to do a million different various things, whereas Dark Souls is about brutal, grueling combat. The way he ran up to him and backstabbed is similar to how many players attack when they invade the world's of others

Also everybody is going to compare the two since they came out at the same time

[–]Antrix32 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't want to put down other RPG's, for example i love Kingdoms of Amalur right now despite it being a cake walk compared to dark souls. The reason dark souls stands out to me is, that even though i waited a year for Skyrim and such, dark souls is still the better game to me, even though i only bought it out of impulse and wasn't to interested in getting it prior to when i bought it.

Inb4 get a damn job (or a better one) and quit whining about not owning a console AND a pc. If you can afford skyrim, save up for a little bit and get an xbox or ps3.

[–]TerminalHappiness 1 point2 points ago

I love the games but I don't see why there has to be any competition with Skyrim. They're hugely different games.

[–]TheMagicToolBus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Where is this competition you speak of? The comic? As the name implies... it's humor.

This is something I see people say a lot, but I rarely see anyone actually act as if the games are competing. A vast majority of people enjoy both games, and frequently say so.

[–]TerminalHappiness 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not referring to any major competitiveness, just the hint of it from the comic.

Though I agree with your second point.

....Cute,tempting, but no. I can't believe they left that glaring bug in there, & I was giddy when they finally fixed it. I got a blown tendon at work & had to take time off. It pissed me off so much, but I kept playing, through the pain, through the injury. Totalling almost 350 hours. Thanks to Dark Souls I managed a serious injury without any pain killers & the rage twitches were like physio on my knee. I got up to New game ++++. Admittedly ALOT of soul came from PVP (I love people that would try me when they were sitting on 2 million + souls) God-dammed 4 kings (By FAR the hardest enemy once you start getting into crazy territory) that & people using the fog ring & trying to pvp (such a piss off)

Dark Souls: More curative then Jesus!

P.S. keep raging against the prissy little newbs. (Bitches need a fog ring to dodge my magic, but there is no dodging a kick off a fucking cliff)
