  1. The more karma a comment gets, the more visible it is to other readers
  2. All controversial posts are downvoted to an extent
  3. Frivelous posts, such as pop culture references or memes, are not downvoted nearly as much

9/10 times, a pop culture reference or meme will be the most visible post in a thread, simply because it is not weighed down by people who "disagree" with it.

Reddit is not a place to have dissenting opinions, or controversial discussions. It is not a free and open forum for your opinions. It is a meme aggregation website by its very nature. Post shallow content that no one can disagree with, and your comment will be seen by the masses.

In my honest opinion, the karma system needs a huge overhaul. I'm tired of shallow comments floating to the top of a thread simply because they aren't being mass downvoted by an army of people who don't agree with them. When I sort comments by "controversial", all of the legitimate opinions without downvotes that I might want to see disappear. If your comment has more upvotes than downvotes, the downvotes shouldn't be counted at all toward its karma score (for purposes of visibility).

This website needs to stop stacking the deck in favor of Pokemon references and Rage Faces. Allow honest opinions to have a fighting chance at seeing the light of day, and maybe reddit will be more than a a giant circle jerk.

It depends on what subreddits you subscribe to. Also, I'll frequently open the comments to some sensationalist article to see the top voted comment being the 'voice of reason' as to why the event is not as stupid or scary as its made out to be.

Self hate of reddit is popular, as evidenced by the number of upvotes you got from this post. I don't hate the self-hate anymore, because that self criticism is what makes reddit more than just a meme aggregation website.

Personally, I'm tired of people not being banned on here for harassing others. I am being stalked on here by a family member and I know damned well who it is. I have downvoted her to hell, I have reported her to the mods but nothing has been done about it.

I have been a Redditor for almost a year (this time) and I am not going to let her run me off from here. This is my third user name because of her.

I don't care about the votes. I do upvote people and rarely downvote anyone. I don't post to get votes. For me, Reddit is entertaining, interesting, educational and fun. It isn't about karma.

People like the person who is harassing me ruin it for everyone by posting hate-filled garbage that doesn't relate to anything other than a family dispute that will never be settled.

I feel that anyone who sees this type of garbage should report it to the mods. Everyone should run people like this completely out of the community. That will be their karma.

You said you don't care about the votes , but your complaining about down votes and karma points. Reddit members can not get "ran off" of reddit. You either delete your own account or reddit themselves delete or suspend your account for whatever they feel the offense may be.

Here is a simple solution: If you have an issue about losing karma points, buy your own. If you don't like people responding to your comments, don't post a comment. If you don't want to be on reddit, close your account. If you don't want to continue a thread, don't reply or continue the thread. It's very easy.

It isn't an offense on reddit for someone to comment on someone's post, nor is it "harassment" or "stalking" when someone responds to what you post within a topic. It is, however considered "abusive" when a redditor cusses another redditor out, when a redditor asks a question or makes an observation about what someone has commented upon regarding a topic...or the redditor responds with an offensive image such as one you posted on another link showing a man jerking himself off. It was quite uncalled for and very unnecesary. This type of behavior is why reddit moderators will ban your account or causes the "mods" to ie... suspend an account.

If you...or anyone for that matter does not like a comment that is posted...simply don't respond. That usually ends a discussion..ie...thread.

I think this is the double-edged sword of reddit's comment karma system. The best or most entertaining comments are usually moved to the top, and trolls are quickly ignored. But at the same time, anyone who goes against the mob is also downvoted and silenced.

I sort of wish there was a way to view comments by absolute karma, meaning the sum of all up votes and down votes. I'd rather read a comment that received 50 up votes and 50 down votes than a comment that received 10 up votes and 2 down votes. Or maybe there is a way to do it, and I just don't know it.

Wouldn't make much of a difference.

MY beef with reddit's karma system is that the top posts remain at the top simply by virtue of being the most visible, not the best/most entertaining.

It also causes discussion to stagnate quickly in a thread because any new additions to the discussion are instantly buried.

Edit:

Opps, never got back around to my point.

Because of this effect, the top posts getting more votes because more people see them, they will always outpace everything else ... including heavily downvoted stuff. You generally won't see anything different than you would now.

This is an awful, awful idea. It's a self-perpetuating system (more visible comments get more upvotes because more people will see them, adds to their total karma) and new users would never get any of their comments seen. After a short time, you'd only ever see the same couple dozen user's on the tops of the comment pages.
