This is actually relatively simple. The machine is laid out on a grid, and in each square, there are three inputs, at the top, upper left, and lower right, and three outputs, at the opposite corners. The balls can take any path through that square, so long as they all exit and enter at a precise moment, so that it can link to the next square. This is completely modular.
