This is why I love my astronomy class.

Your markup wouldn't validate: Your end tag would need to be </christiantroll>.

And there's no proof to say he didn't.

We don't know, therefore god.

I love that this is the theist's most common argument.

And the beauty is, it could be correct!

Sure, maybe. But that claim didn't work out so well the last 20 things it was applied to.

But let's say this claim (finally) turns out to be true: which god?

Who's to say it's a god we've even heard of?

[–]xdzgor 1 point2 points ago

Haha - GOD, silly.

So the universe has a lot of order, I get that, but can I get some examples of things that are not perfectly ordered?

Dark matter, anti-matter, worm holes, and past the observable universe?

I'd refrain from using the phrase "perfect" because of its subjectivity. It used to be that "perfect" mean "perfectly circular orbits" which is not the case, they are elliptical. If you want some beautiful chaos, look up pictures of colliding galaxies.

[–]Repealer 0 points1 point ago

hmmm true, when I used the word perfectly I meant we know some of the laws of the universe, like for example gravity, and can model perfectly how distances travel etc, and follow this routine perfectly.

Do colliding galaxies not follow the laws of gravity and inverse laws etc? I don't really know.

[–]bambam93 0 points1 point ago

They do, put they simply aren't neat, they are very chaotic and unpredictable is what I meant.

These are magnificently beautiful constructs.

WHO'S THE CONSTRUCTOR, SAVAGE??

[–]JimDixon 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's fair to say all of mathematics is a human construct, although it exactly corresponds to reality in certain cases.

Therefore mathematicians are the constructors.

I'm not sure why he calls the genome a construct; it's not a mathematical concept, if I understand correctly what he's referring to. Maybe it's because the discovery of the structure of DNA involved a lot of geometry?

I saw a post in askreddit a while back about physics and the speed of light. One thread boiled down to defining exactly what momentum is. And apparently momentum is just a "thing" that we defined as being conserved. It is how people observe the universe, not how the universe views itself.

I'm excited for the next season. Adam has stated that he wants to use everything in his power to educate people on evolution. He said he's tired of 40% (I think) of America not believing in evolution.

Unfortunately, I'm sure it's a lot higher than 40%...

Strange how he talks about the "order". I understand he means the "laws" of gravitation etc. But what I see in the universe is wild chaos - from weather systems to exploding stars, colliding galaxies, competing and evolving lifeforms.

Adam Savage: I am unsure of his theological views, but I find him charming either way.

Science operates in the quantifiable and the physical.

If a non-physical, non-quantifiable phenomenon can be shown to have any effect on existence, then we should by all means go after it with a magnifying glass and lab coats.

However, this quote seems to indicate that there are non-materialist arguments to be made in the realm of science. It also seems to imply

• science hasn't improved our quality of life (two words: Norman Borlaug).
• science accepts unsubstantiated stories (members of the science community love proving their colleagues wrong, and they do it often.)

Never mind the bit where the speaker claims that it's important to accept that some things go "against common sense", then damns science for the "patent absurdity of some of its constructs."

Harvard or not, this gentleman is either misquoted or misinformed.

Jesus, really? Have any of you watched mythbusters? How can anybody think that this guy even respects the scientific method, let alone utilizes it?!!?!

Mythbusters is fun pseudo-science for newbs, but their method of deliberation is inherently flawed and based in heavy assumption. It would be a gross incompetence if it were considered a science.
