Actually, make the DPad not be balls for fighters...

But leave the rest of it alone.

[–]Frigorific 95 points96 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They actually can't make a good DPad because all the best designs were patented. Just another example of how crappy patent laws are.

[–]garrisonc 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've been blaming these patent issues for a long time, but the patent on the actual NES has expired at this point; surely the d-pad should be fair game by now?

[–]LATINO_IN_DENIAL 97 points98 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The only thing I ask is they make it bluetooth and lithion battery.

[–]03Titanium 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They will because that will make the 360 controller now useless. They could have easily shoved a bigger battery into the 360 controller and made it last much longer but the price would take a bulge and then they couldn't sell the accessory pack. The new consoles will have so much potential but only time will tell how much of that potential is used up. It's not like batteries,Bluetooth, or even a normal sized hard drive are expensive anymore.

This is the one and only reason i still prefer the PS3 controller. The xbox d-pad is awful.

[–]NoxiousStimuli 165 points166 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The newer model controllers are fucking amazing in comparison. The 4way d-pad mode is almost as good as my PS2 controller.

[–]atatassault 64 points65 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I tried the feel of that, and its still an 8-way switch, you just have more leverage on the cardinal directions. Still doesn't work for older games that freak out with diagonal input.

[–]IR_DIGITAL 31 points32 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. The cardinal directions aren't any sharper than anything else and it makes the whole thing feel like trying to do a fireball motion with your thumb in a bowl of pudding.

[–]tofagerl 16 points17 points ago

Still costs 100 USD where I live. Bought a new xbox in november, and only got the old one.

[–]criscothediscoman 31 points32 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The improvement is only marginal at best. Let's say the current D-pad is %100 shit, the new one is like %90 shit. It feels a little better under your thumb, but if you're even slightly off center with your button press it's still gonna register a diagonal movement due to the type of switch benath.

The Razer Onza is a much better buy.

[–]greenyeyes 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i went to 3 onza's in 2 months, i honestly was very upset, because i WANTED the Onza to be better.I babied the damn things, yet they still broke, the analog stick mechanism breaks, or the button etc. The xbox original controllers i would step on or throw at a wall, and they never broke.Even now i have my original 2 controllers,4 yrs old, still going strong.

i love Razer but their quality is pretty bad.

[–]Lamedog 24 points25 points ago

[–]Samen28 57 points58 points ago

The PS controller is way to small for me. :/

[–]saaking 41 points42 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't understand when people say that, now I'm not hating but I'd say I have pretty big hands and the Ps3 controller still feel perfect. In fact, both controllers have roughly the same dimensions

The misconception that the 360 controller is somehow larger is just weird to me and, perhaps, a poor excuse.

[–]bigshrimping 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd say it's more the shape than the size. To me, the Xbox controller feels more comfortable in my hands. Whether that's just me being accustomed to it or what but I like it better than the PS3 controller. It's all personal preference though I'm not gonna argue with someone over what controller feels better

[–]platipress 41 points42 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's just the positioning of the analog sticks on the PS3 controller. My thumbs will get a bit crampy after a while of using it. I think if they moved the analog sticks a little bit farther forward, it would alleviate this a bit.

[–]nitetrip 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My thumb cramps up too when I use the ps3 controller. I fucking hate it.

[–]FracOMac 94 points95 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Its not the size of the controller's themselves, but the size of the grips. The xbox one fills out my palms better.

Source: I own both systems.

[–]jerrrfy 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. I don't own a PS3, but I have a PS2 and the controllers are basically identical (at least in size) and my pinky fingers wrap around the bottom of the grip in a weird way that always makes half of my hand get numb if I play for too long. I've heard the PS3 controller might be a little more responsive and the thumbsticks are less likely to get loose, but the 360 controller just feels right in my hands.

[–]Dr_Gats 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This. Also the weight. The PS just feels like something I'd get out of a cereal box.

[–]skc132 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yes yes. The dualshock 3 ones are a lot better but they still feel super light and flimsy. The xbox ones just feel so solid.

[–]ZsaFreigh 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes! When I'm sitting on the couch, wondering what I would do if an intruder were to break in right now, I look at my xbox controller and think "The guy's skull would probably break before this controller did" and I feel a strong sense of comfort and safety wash over me.

[–]yukidomaru 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Out of curiosity, was it a Dualshock 3 or a sixaxis you tried? The Dualshock is much heavier.

[–]Samen28 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, the 360 controller is larger, by a bit. That's not a misconception, though most of the difference does come from the size of the handles (with the 360's handgrips extending all the way up to the triggers) and not the body of the device itself.

Personally, I wasn't trying to speak for anyone else - or even pass judgement on the design of the PlayStation controller. I just have unreasonably huge hands. Like a bear on steroids.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My beef with PS3 controllers is that when I strafe around a left-hand corner my thumbs hit each other and I lose my grip on the sticks. I like the way the Xbox controller has them offset.

[–]alle0441 41 points42 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Modern controller design is the one thing I really can't produce a strong opinion on.

360 controller is pretty comfortable, but the offset analog sticks are a bit awkward and Dpad sucks.

PS3 controller isn't very ergonomic, but the light weight + battery life is damn impressive.

[–]danimal2011 94 points95 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This might be weird, but I actually prefer the heft of the Xbox 360 controller over the PS3 controller. Just holding the PS3 controller in my hand, it feels cheap and flimsy to me (even though I know it's not).

[–]Grafeno 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah, the good old iPhone vs Samsung argument. "The iPhone feels more hefty, more quality, whereas the Samsung phones feel cheap and flimsy".

You're getting an upvote for adding "even though I know it's not" though. And yes, I think we are simply used to thinking of lightweight as cheap and flimsy, it's the natural response which many people have, while this is not necessarily true.

[–]gheis 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've always had this issue with the Playstation controllers. My favorite PS2 controller was a third-party one that actually had some weight to it and a better stick-contour for my thumbs, and that's part of why I like the 360 controller.

It doesn't need to be ponderous, but I do like my electronics in general to have a little weight to them. As a psychological thing, we often equate weight with sturdiness.

[–]ShastaMcShasta 31 points32 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a psychological thing, we often equate weight with sturdiness.

The original Xbox controllers took this to the next level.

360 controller is pretty comfortable, but the offset analog sticks are a bit awkward

I went from Dreamcast to Gamecube to Xbox before picking up my first analog Playstation controller and I cannot stand having both joysticks placed close together and both so low like that, especially when your left thumb spends most of it's time on it's joystick so having to hold it down towards the stick instead of it resting on it just feels... wrong to me.

[–]CheckOutMyVan 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have large hands and with the PS controller my thumbs will hit each other quite a bit. I like the offset joysticks on the 360.

[–]stationhollow 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How the hell are you using the controller if your thumbs hit? The PS3 controller is meant to sit high in your hands and use the tips of your thumbs instead of the ball or joint like the 360 controller.

[–]MatsuzoSF 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your thumbs hit? What, are you resting your joints on the analog sticks or something?

[–]toThe9thPower 158 points159 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That offset analog stick setup is actually superior. When you have so many games that make you click so often to sprint, having the left analog stick up further is a smarter idea because you are simply pressing forward when you click. When the analog stick is off to the side it creates much more strain when pressing down. ALSO, the shape of the PS3 controller is a joke, it does not fit in your hands the way an Xbox controller does. Also lets be reasonable, Those "triggers" are a fucking joke, they are a button pretending to be a trigger, and it is so shitty that every shooter actually uses the L1 R1 as default. Which goes to show just how badly that design is. You cannot beat real triggers and a slightly rounded design that actually fits your hands

[–]ViceMikeyX 99 points100 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah - here for this, PS3 "triggers" are absolute garbage.

I'm an avid gamer, but how the fuck do you get that moist while playing a video game?

[–]counters14 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Something to do with nerves. While they may be perfectly fine in other conditions, some people handsweat profusely while playing with a controller.

Very embarrassing when passing the controller around with friends.

[–]JShabs 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Its really about the person. The ps3 controller for me is perfect and so is the xbox controller. Though I prefer the ps3 controller much more because it fits my hand and feels great. Plus I like the L1 and R1 for the ps3 controller as the shoot button it feels right. Its simply about opinion.

[–]Ajzzz 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Offset analogue sticks are better for some games and worse for others. The d-pad is incredibly bad on the 360 pad. Much prefer the weight and triggers on the 360 pad to the PS3 pad. I played with a dual shock on ps1 and PC for a decade, with the xbox-s pad and xbox 360 pad for about 8 years, I don't have a preference for "comfort", they're both great. The front facing buttons on the PS controllers have always been better in my opinion.

[–]Gothbot6k 12 points13 points ago

Have you tired the new ones on the new controllers?

[–]SovietPretzel 31 points32 points ago

They're still crap. Anyone that plays fighters in the least bit seriously can tell you that the d-pad is still utter shite. PS3's d-pad is at least usable.

[–]Butterbemme 12 points13 points ago

1000 times yes. It's like the SNES controller and I can NOT understand how you use both without getting your thumbs destroyed. I (somehow have to) press very hard to get a reaction out of the D-Pad and it's just very straining and uncomfortable.

To me, a good disc-shape d-pad is so much better.

[–]Gothbot6k 7 points8 points ago

Thats true but the new one is a step up. Why not use a third party controller for fighting games? I have a Razer Onza for everything then I use a fighting stick to play fighting games.

[–]Knapperr 7 points8 points ago

the perception that stick > pad is dying for fighters. wolfkrone, who is one of the best c.vipers on the planet, is a pad player. he's just one example among a number top tier pad players. it's more about preference instead of one being better than the other.

[–]Butterbemme 3 points4 points ago

[–]theamazingroberto 9 points10 points ago

Nintendo's lawyers. Or possibly the US patent office.

[–]Twizinator 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

imho if you are going to play a fighter, get a fightstick/arcadestick (whichever you call it).

[–]MasterBistro 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As people have said before, the idea that fightsticks are the best controllers is dying out in favor of the idea that it's preference. Arcade sticks are nice, but they are expensive at $150 and there's no way to prove that it's better than a fightpad at about $20. Your wrist may move a bit faster but it won't be much of a problem unless you want to do standing 720s or something.

[–]juice_crew_all_stars 224 points225 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The dpad is a little weak, I like the newer models better.

[–]THANE_OF_ANN_ARBOR 131 points132 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why did they make the buttons monochrome? It looks like a more unified design, but surely the functionality will suffer for those that aren't familiar with the colors. When they see a white A surrounded by a green circle in a tutorial, they will have to lift their fingers off of the controller and actually find the A instead of simply glancing over and seeing which button is green. This is immersion breaking and unnecessary.

Also, I think that a certain amount of color is necessary to add a playful look to the object. You're playing video games, not creating excel spreadsheets.

EDIT: Also, it looks too chrome-y for my taste. Is that a metallic-gray coating on the front of the controller and a faux chrome coating on the d-pad? Looks kind of tacky to me, almost like MS is trying too hard to be sleek. This may be only my opinion, though.

It was useful for a few games. I had the Namco arcade collection thing, and some of the games just felt better with a D-pad instead of the analog stick.

Though you had to hold the controller at a much wider stance, which did feel a bit awkward.

[–]reallynotnick 4 points5 points ago

They need to fix the fucking d-pad.

Also the play and charge cable occasionally refusing to charge.

Also if they could somehow invent a feature that stops the build up of gunk underneath the sticks that would be amazing.

I got a small nylon brush, which works great for clearing gunk from all kinds of handled devices - controllers, mice, keyboards, remotes, etc. It even gets the build-up that accumulates in the seams.

They're like long-bristled tooth brushes and I found a similar 5-pak for about $3 at my local hardware store.

[–][deleted] 105 points106 points ago

No. Add bluetooth so that you can use it with ANY BLUETOOTH DEVICE. PS3 and Wii controllers work on so many many things with the right drivers, because bluetooth is a standard built into so many things.

Also, make the USB cable actually connect it to the device and usable, instead of just working as a charge cable. You can plug a DS3 into a PC via the USB, and it gets recognized as a controller right away. And is usable without even bothering with Bluetooth if you don't want to. Because you can use the damn wire as an input method (and charge at the same time).

And fix that stupid D-Pad.

How is the dongle buggy? You plug it in, you connect your controllers, the same way you do to the console? It even works in linux!

Improvements we can all agree on:

  • Make the d-pad not shit. This seemed to be resolved by the model where you change how the d-pad works.
  • Rechargeable batteries built in that don't die within a year.
  • Charge through USB (which in turn would make it work on PC without needing an adapter or wired controller like the PS3 controller.)
  • Make the bumpers less clicky.
  • Smaller "Home" button to make accidental presses less likely.
  • Bluetooth.

Debatable and no way to please everyone:

  • Stick layout.
  • D-pad layout.
  • Convex/concave.

Nobody did. It came with NiGHTS: Into Dreams (still one of my favorite games of all time) but it was a complete bastard to use.

Thank goodness for emulators now and that I can use a better (PS3 or X360) controller and still enjoy the game.

Did you ever actually use one? My friend got a launch Xbox and Halo. We played for 10 hours straight. At the end (in case you missed it, Halo for 10 hours straight), one of us realized our hands didn't hurt in the slightest. Not even a little pain or a blister...nothing. We concluded Microsoft had stumbled across the perfect controller design. Still the most comfortable controller I've ever held.

If they change anything, I'd like them to make the battery pack more reliable. It's bullshit that 3/4 of my controllers don't function unless I have the charge cable connected because the battery pack is loose or whatever.

I don't use the D-Pad enough to attest to it being comparatively good or bad, so if the popular opinion is to change it, go for it.

I would love to see the big Xbox live button in the middle changed to be a little more useful. Something like 2 smaller buttons - one that goes straight to your friends list and another the goes straight to messages.

AND make the dashboard/live menu more responsive! It is sooo slow to bring up the messages window when you get an invite or message. That shit needs to be instant when you hit that button!

[–]ThisNameIsOriginal 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That would be really useful and easy to do. Make the the same size but have two parts. If you press them together it acts like it always has. But press just one side or the other and it does what you suggested, goes to friends list or messages.

[–]rollcage 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

exactly, it was an amazing controller but the xbox one is better as it added onto it. Hopeuflly the new xbox controller adds onto the current one, why would you want something to stay the same forever when there are infinite possibilities of cool

[–]spartacat300 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is the most comfortable controller to hold for me. The only thing that would I would even consider fixing is the D-pad. Even then, only make is a small fix that does not affect the shape.

[–]altoid2k4 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

From the first time I held the 360 controller in my hand it was a match made in heaven, perfect size, weight, button spacing, everything. I hope they keep it the way it is too

[–]Ziltoid_ 50 points51 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Am I the only one that likes the PS3 controller more than the 360? People always rip on the thumbstick layout, but you're holding the 360 controller a different way in each hand for shooters, when the PS3 controller its the same way on both sides. Plus the PS3 thumbsticks seem to get less deadzone.

However, the triggers on the ps3 are worse.

[–]queenmaeree 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I owned a PS1 and PS2 before getting a 360. Now that I've gotten used to the 360 controller, I like it a lot better. My hands don't cramp anywhere as much.

[–]Griogair 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Granted I've spent far more time playing with a Playstation controller, but to me they just make much more sense. The fact that my hands are symmetrical when I use it means a lot and just feels more comfortable and natural. I have quite big hands and I've never had issues with cramp.

I also prefer the triggers, possibly due to the bigger surface area. I don't use my middle fingers though; just switch my second finger when necessary.

It's quite annoying when people state the Xbox controller is better as if it's fact. It's not. It's a matter of opinion.

[–]MatsuzoSF 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're not the only one. It's just that people who like the PS3 controller, on average, tend to be less fanatical about it. For example, " I prefer the PS3's controller design", as opposed to "The X360's controller is the correct design and anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong".

[–]h_chinaski 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or we just have less Japanese here. Ps3 is less sold in the US than the box. You are conditioned to like what you get. I have a PS3 and used to the pad, never had to complain about it. Never got cramp or what the fuck. All I can say is that Microsoft did a huge amelioration from the Xbox pad to the 360. Sony got it right in 1996.

[–]AXP878 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No I'm with you. Personally I think the PS3 controller is the most comfortable and natural feeling controller I've ever used; then again I do have baby hands.

[–]UNC_Samurai 66 points67 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No. Internal batteries charged by a USB cable. Quit nickel-and-diming us with separate batteries.

[–]Scarmasu 81 points82 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

User removable batteries allow you to keep using your controller for longer. and when the battery can't be recharged any longer/ or will only last 10 minutes theres an option for replacing them yourself. Well at least without taking the damn things apart. the only issue I have with the current controller is the Battery pack is quite large hopefully they use some newer battery tech to increase the mah and decrease the size.

[–]McLargepants 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've had my PS3 controller since I got my PS3 years ago, I can say that I've never had any controller related issue, they last days of active use, and I have two controllers, so one is always charging just in case. Seriously I couldn't imagine going back to the 360 rechargeable/disposable AAs.

[–]casualsloth 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

PS3 controllers charge faster and last about 3-4 times longer than the xbox controller with the official battery pack in my experience.

PS3 controllers use excellent batteries, good for probably 1000 charges, which is done with a standard usb mini cable. This is a zero hassle set-up. I'm on the same controller as when I bought my PS3 3-4 years ago, and I've given the controller battery no thought.

Contrast that with my 360. Heavy battery pack. I went through two of the crap official battery packs over the course of 3 years, battery life was mediocre. I also had problems with the propriety charge cable connection, had to buy a new one of those too.

I eventually went to standard rechargeable AA batteries, slightly longer lasting, but still wasn't great until I switched again to the really expensive re-chargeable batteries.

So with the quick charger, expensive re-chargeables, the heavier 360 controller is comparable to the PS3 controller for battery life, but I'm left with the conclusion - Sony did it right.

[–]cluckles 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think a tradeoff would be nice actually. Removable battery packs (with one included with the controller) that can be charged by standard USB. You have your rechargeable battery, if it dies you can swap it out and buy a new one, and if your cable breaks you don't have to go buy a specific cable that was made specifically for the controller. Best of all worlds, IMO.

But nickle and diming takes priorty, so you know... we're probably gonna be stuck with "really just a USB cable, but with a funny plug to force you to buy it from us" cables.

[–]metaphysicalme 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I prefer using my own rechargeable AAs. I have ps3 as well with their internal batteries. I haven't had one fail on me yet, but I always eyeball it warily before I start playing.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Except also:

  • fix the dpad
  • lose the proprietary cord/battery bullshit
  • build the battery properly into the controller itself and lost the shitty lump on the back
  • make it Li-ion while you're at it.
  • use a better/more standard communication protocol like bluetooth so we don't also have to buy proprietary bullshit for wirelessness on PC
  • try some reasonably durable sticks that don't get broken and stuck off-center almost immediately (or actually immediately, straight out of the box brand new, like the last two I bought)
  • this is more console software, but let us fucking change controller numbers.

Other than that, don't change a thing.

Better d-pad, built in battery, and maybe a rubberized surface on the sides are a few improvements I can think of. As far as the overall design, I agree it should stay the same. Also fix the slow-turn issue that plagues so many controllers. Many people will never notice this, but in FPS games mainly it can be a huge annoyance.

[–]elias67 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The analog stick gets stuck off-center after enough use, meaning I'm slowly strafing when I should be standing still.

Other than that (and the d-pad) it's a great controller.

[–]Dante2k4 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

With the exception of the D-pad, yes, I agree.

Now if somebody could get Sony to update their hunk of junk, that would be even better. Seriously, controllers evolve for a reason... the dual-shock is NOT good. The D-pad is garbage, the sticks are too close together/don't feel right for shooters... bleh. The rest of the design is fine, but the sticks in particular REALLY need to be changed.

1) Improve d-pad.
2) Add Wii-style shaking controls, so instead of button mashing I can flail my controller about wildly.

Other than that, yeah, I'm good.

[–]Glass_of_Milk 1 point2 points ago

I really wish they'd come up with a new controller honestly. Something like http://store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/en_US/pd/productID.221675100 maybe, with a trackball instead of that thumb dpad.

Thumbsticks are really holding back consoles from ever competing with the precision of pc gaming. I think those trackball mice with the ball on the thumb is the best way to incorporate that.

[–]valleyshrew 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is bullshit. You might prefer the shape of the controller to hold or the left analogue stick position or the vibration strength but those are the only positives about the controller. The facebuttons are cheap and unresponsive, the bumper buttons are just terrible, the triggers are too springy and only good for racing games not shooters ironically, and worst of all, these 6 buttons are not pressure sensitive which is important in some games (sports games really should be using pressure sensitivity for quicker responsiveness but this generation's 360 controller has ruined that). The analogue sticks are also less precise than the ps3's over short distances which is why every 360 shooter requires autoaim adjustment because the stick does not give easily to slight movements.

[–]McMan777 1 point2 points ago

Make it bluetooth.
