Who says you're supposed to give up what you love most for Lent?? Then people would give up their families or pets or something. No, they give up things that they are unnecessarily attached to, like chocolate or TV. It's an exercise in willpower in amoral matters to prepare your will for moral ones.

No that's wrong. For lent you give up meat. Giving up anything else is entirely meaningless, but no more so than the entire concept of lent to begin with. Inexplicably, fish are acceptable and not considered meat. Biology has no place in religion...

Especially when "fish" includes beavers, capybaras, sea turtles, iguanas, and I'm pretty sure whales and dolphins.

So the meat of a beaver is considered equal to fish.

And your point is?

actually lent is about giving up a worldly possession that is deemed by you unnecessary. So looks like it's not just insane Christians not checking their facts....

Good work on creating the least convincing argument for atheism of all time.

Stephen Colbert already did that last year :)

The idea of giving things up for Lent for Christians is to give up things that you are consumed by in order to give yourself more time for God. Source: Former Christian.

Ok, I was "born Atheist" in an atheist family, in a country that's mostly atheist. What's this "lent" thing?

[–]hellcrapdamn 4 points5 points ago

It builds up in your belly button or clothes dryer.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

yes but HOW do I give it up? (I'm sorry I asked a question easily google-able)

[–]hellcrapdamn 3 points4 points ago

You're never gonna give it up. Never gonna let it down. Never gonna run around and hurt it?

[–]BlazeOrangeDeer 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, you're never going to run around and desert it. You aren't going to make it cry or let it say goodbye either. You also won't tell a lie to it and hurt it.

Thank you for correcting me. I'm not that familiar with the gospel.

The gospel according to Rick. In the beginning he created the heavens and the earth, for he was no stranger to love.

Seriously, as far as I know it's a Catholic ritual. I guess they're supposed to give up something they love for a month. I'm clearly not an expert on it, but here's some more info. As far as the HOW, I suppose you just stop doing something you like for a month. It could be chocolate, television, or heroin. I don't really know.

I'm not 100% on this, but isn't the idea to give up a material thing or a habit? Or anything OTHER than God?

[–]izmeister 1 point2 points ago

Lent isn't about giving up something you love, it's about giving up something that separates you from god. Although, I'm pretty sure most Christians just use it as an excuse to go on a diet (like the people who give up soda).

I think Wikipedia pretty much sums it up in a sentence, "The traditional purpose of Lent is the penitential preparation of the believer—through prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving, and self-denial."

If people were aware that they were bigots... they wouldn't be.

[–]The_Painted_Man 1 point2 points ago

I respectfully disagree. Some people enjoy being bigots.

If Christians had God #1 then they would not need "forgiveness" of their sins nearly as much lol. Hell even the military has God 3rd. Unit Corps God Country right?

Edit Spelling Thanks Malinterian!

You give up coveted things, not what you love the most. If you're going to make fun, then do so accurately. Otherwise, you make us all look bad... But mainly yourself.
