Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Awesome image but is there an (even) larger res version of this? Pretty hard to make out the details on this one.

[–]mylifeisanocean 5 points6 points ago

here is a zoomable map

[–]Lithandrill 1 point2 points ago

Sweet. Not quite a downloadable hi-res image but at least it allows for some in depth viewing.

The image from the guardian seems to be the primary source, but sadly it's the same resolution as the OP and still JPEG!

[–]NkafKe 0 points1 point ago

You wouldn't do that...

...would you??

[–]lt_toastyfishpants 1 point2 points ago

This makes me uneasy for some reason

[–]ElmertheAwesome 1 point2 points ago*

Pardon me for asking but what was the Alexandria Accident?

EDIT: Nevermind.

Who owns the cables?

[–]Pr4370r1u5 3 points4 points ago

Ownership I do not know, but I do know that they are funded by the world's great financial centers. In modern times, the ability to make a financial transaction milliseconds before someone else can make a difference measurable in millions of dollars. Note the major ties between NYC and London, and Tokyo and the west coast. The first major use of the first undersea cable (north Atlantic) was for financial transactions.

[–]anonymat 2 points3 points ago

I did contract work for a major cable landing station. In the case of the fibers I dealt with, the company I was contracted through OWNED the cables and leased specific bandwidth (WDM) to very large companies. I can say, for certain, Google owned some.

The work I performed was for the newest laid undersea cables. The reason for this build was to speed up financial processes between a large North American financial center and a large European financial center.

The company who is now the largest lessee of the cable was interested in the nano second differences in transaction times. Hope this helps.

Some cable are owned privately and capacity is sold to telecom companies wholesale or directly to customers. Many others are consortium systems, owned by a group of investing telecom companies and managed by them collectively based on their initial investment.

[–]LettersFromTheSky 1 point2 points ago

I'd wager some kind of government.

[–]dubnine 1 point2 points ago

I have a friend that works at Cisco and once he was telling me how the internet (or whatever they used it for, most of his work was over my head) would just go out in places overseas and part of his job was the redirect it through all these underwater cables. Until he told me that I didn't even know they existed.

[–]Jibrish 0 points1 point ago

Core BGP routers maybe?

[–]dubnine 0 points1 point ago

Dude, I have no idea what that is. Ha. I just know it was/is impressive.

[–]fancy-chips 1 point2 points ago

nobody believes me when I tell them the internet is actually a series of large undersea cables.

[–]_submarinecablemap_ 1 point2 points ago

Check out http://www.submarinecablemap.com from TeleGeography. It's a free, interactive map that's updated continuously.

[–]BigRobb 1 point2 points ago

so this is what wikileaks got in trouble over

[–]ApatheticAsian17 1 point2 points ago

We have undersea cables?

[–]mcartz33 0 points1 point ago

This is seriously one of the coolest images i've ever seen.

Cyrus West Field was a dedicated fukcer.

[–]crazymanc90 0 points1 point ago

Crosspost to r/MapPorn, they would like this a lot!

[–]zaimdk 0 points1 point ago

China is one there twice, and the cables are not similar?

[–]AngelicXS 0 points1 point ago

If you connect the dots A through P and magnify over 1000x the picture reveals who is really behind this madness. Illuminati.

[–]akmjolnir 0 points1 point ago

I work at the company that makes most of the fiber that goes into those cables. It's looks identical to fishing line, it's stronger, and if you could tie it in knots it would be a cheaper alternative.

[–]pebgc 0 points1 point ago

There is no way these can all be regulated from a terrorist attack....Imagine if a well funded program cut even a 10th of the wires...hmmm....Anonomous needs some mechanical engineers now.

[–]NakedOldGuy 0 points1 point ago

Infographic, not map.

[–]nathanlegit 0 points1 point ago

Wait a minute. You mean to tell me that something happened to those cables at the bottom of the ocean there would be no internet?

[–]Vsx 1 point2 points ago

You thought the internet ran on magic and fairy dust?

[–]nathanlegit 0 points1 point ago

Dammit, I knew Reddit would destroy my perception of reality.

[–]juggalonumber27 0 points1 point ago

oh wow, TIL....

[–]jeffp 0 points1 point ago

When Diplomats use cables to transmit messages are these the cables? Or are they referencing another type of messaging service?

[–]pipechang 0 points1 point ago

No wonder I get such a bad ping with Australia.(Peru)

[–]Stumbling_Sober 0 points1 point ago

Undersea Cable Engineer here, this is where I go:

[–]baaron 0 points1 point ago

Looks like Antarctica got the cold shoulder...

[–]jarkey 0 points1 point ago

But Alaska is hooked up alright

[–]spinlock 0 points1 point ago

King nerd here. My dad took my brother and I out of school to go visit the SS Long Lines before it left to run the first trans-atlantic cable.

[–]zanycaswell 0 points1 point ago

That's cool! Crossposted to /r/dataisbeautiful.

[–]-abcd 0 points1 point ago

This is good for the surplus of people who seem to think most data transfer in the world is via satellite.

[–]reverendball 0 points1 point ago

and thats why australians are the best gamers in the world.

they have to play with unholy ping at all times

[–]Hubris2 0 points1 point ago

What about the Kiwis? They have one pipe to Sydney, and one to Los Angeles.
