"The white colorings help Arctic foxes to effectively hunt rodents, birds, and even fish. But in winter prey can be scarce on the ground. At such times, arctic foxes will follow the region's premier predator-a polar bear-to eat the leftover scraps from its kills. Foxes will also eat vegetables when they are available."

It's expecting you to kill something. Go kill something and let it eat.

It might also be that a polar bear is around or that the fox and polar has developed a symbiotic hunting relationship. The fox distracts and the polar bear hunts, then the fox gets some scraps.

Someone needs to photoshop in the shadow of the polar bear looming over the photographer. Someone with photoshop skills. I'm talking of course of ... PhotoshopMan. Not the hero Reddit needs, but the hero Reddit deserves.

Yeah, I came here to say just that. Those foxes, IIRC, are basically scavengers. So when you see him following you, think of a flock of vultures circling overhead.

[–]vahntitrio 9 points10 points ago

Doesn't mean a bad omen for the person; just that people tend to leave food for them. The bald eagle never leaves our lake in the winter. It basically steals fish and old bait people leave on the ice to survive the winter.

[–]JimmyJuice 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think he was looking to eat you, I think he was looking to eat your leftovers. These foxes are known to follow polar bears around to scavenge their kills. The polar bear mostly eats the blubber of the seal, there is usually plenty of meat and scraps left over for the arctic fox.

Foxes get rabies quite frequently. Two of the main symptoms are "craziness" and "fearlessness." Not saying he has rabies, but I'd be a little suspicious of a fox that wasn't afraid of me.

Don't touch him. And if he bites you, well... time for some vaccinations.

[–]somefgt 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I feel like... It shouldn't be called a vaccination post bite. I don't know though. This just seems silly to me.

I always picture vaccinations being precautions.

[–]RealRabiesFacts 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's called post-exposure prophylaxis. It is still a vaccine post-exposure because it prevents illness.

The word "prevention" has a wider scope in the medical world than in normal English. A post-exposure vaccine is a form of secondary prevention. See this chart for more info. Another example of secondary prevention is heartworm preventative, which only does anything if the animal is becoming infected.

You know, in a way, that would be comforting. That little time vulture would always be there for you like no one else. It'd see you through your whole life, even to the end. Time vultures won't break your heart. They won't divorce you. They won't care if you've taken to alcoholism or lost your job. They really will be there through thick or thin. When it's all over, time vultures would make sure that your remains benefit life forms more complex than plants, bugs, and worms.

I wish I had a time vulture.

How long did it take with the first dogs?

[–]OmAerial 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

From what I saw on the site, they've been domesticating them for the past 50 years, but they aren't fully domesticated so they'd be okay as pets but you'd have to be careful and realize they aren't normal pets like dogs or cats. It seems so worth it though, especially for those adorable Arctic Foxes. I want so bad.

[–]Doggiestylze 11 points12 points ago*

A study actually has already been done about that by a man named Dmitry Belyaev. He found that it only took 10 generations (50 years) of selective breeding before he saw some major results in both their behavior and physic. The foxes that were produced by his work are actually still bred by a team of his followers in Siberia, and you can purchase them Here

Edit: They are much more expensive then the ones in ThisOpenFist's link but they are also 100x more domesticated. .....I should be a fox salesmen.

Edit 2:I mean OmAerial.

[–]svejkist 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It didn't. Dogs domesticated themselves by scavenging in human garbage. Belyaev replicated that process in a breeding program over 50 years with thousands of foxes.

[–]MEANL3R 47 points48 points ago

He does, but "Continental US" is an outdated term that was used before Alaska(nor Hawaii) was a state, and was meant to refer to the US excluding outside territories.

TECHNICALLY, Alaska is part of the continental US. But a lot of places that offer free shipping to the "continental" US really mean "contiguous." That always pisses me off but there isn't really much I can do about it.

Did your friend say how long this fox followed them?

[–]khamza[S] 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

not really. he said that he was in his truck and noticed that this fox was following him. I presume he got out and took this pic.

[–]burntfrog 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Does he work on the slope? I see 5 or 6 foxes everytime I go up there.

So, hypothetically speaking I were a bajillionaire (scientific term) and could afford to buy one, would one of these make a good pet? Are they domesticate-able?

p.s. Making up words is fun.

I'm not sure about arctic foxes, but I've done research on raising a fox as a pet. If raised from birth and neutered/spayed, Foxes actually make remarkably good, easy to take care of animal companions, similar in care as your average medium sized dog.

National Geographic had these people on its cover a few months ago -- they breed the sweetest-tempered foxes with each other and get adoptable foxes. I remember a pic of a fox in a nicely decorated dacha -- it looked like an elongated Pomeranian.

Dude that is NO JOKE. I've been to a wolf preserve in NJ where they had foxes and bobcats. When the foxes came out I was like "HOLY FUCK WHERE ARE THE SKUNKS????" ..... and it was the foxes D:

That being said, they are still my favorite animal. Stinky as hell, but still my favorite.

Ahahahahahaha, I love how "Do foxes smell bad?" is in the FAQ.

"Yes."

The SibFox ones are domesticated. There's no kits available right now though. :(

I've heard Fennec foxes make pretty good pets too. In general foxes can be human friendly, because of the thousands of years foxes have coexisted near human civilizations. However the big problem with most is that they have such strong natural instincts for digging, running, jumping and hunting, that they're very difficult to keep as you would a cat or dog.

A lot of them hang around the area because the workers feed them scraps. They are pretty friendly. One of my friends used to have a pet fox.

Anyone remember the news story of the Chinese dude who thought one of these foxes was a dog so he took it home and he wondered why it kept scratching and biting him?

My guess is that he's trying to play hide and seek. He's pretty good.

Some foxes are known not to have fear of human beings. Sure, they could be rabid, but some of them seem genuinely curious. The little fellow is cute, but don't encourage him. The next person he tries to follow might just kill him.
