Yep, it's time for a GTA: Dubai.

[–]WarPhalange 231 points232 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Mission Objective: Go pick up Abdul on the corner of uhh... and ummm...

Dubai has no street names.

[–]Moath 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are street names, no remembers them but more accurately there is no unified address system, except for the suburban areas.

[–]brp 80 points81 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hahahha. Current eating breakfast in dubai and this made me crack up and almost spit honeydew everywhere.

Actually, im staying right off Umm Sequiem street now by mall of Emirates. =p

[–]WarPhalange 86 points87 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, well, you still don't have a sewer system, so there.

[–]SwampySoccerField 208 points209 points ago

There's a slave for that.

[–]Tamil_Tigger 20 points21 points ago

Is that like the UAE version of "There's an app for that"?

[–]khalaban 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, there is a sewage system. It just doesn't extend throughout the whole city yet.

[–]brp 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Haha, for many of the people here it's out of mind and doesn't affect our daily lives.

Hopefully will be on a flight home to US tomorrow and enjoy some good vegetation... although not looking forward to freezing my balls off.

[–]esssssss 8 points9 points ago

Don't worry. Winter was cancelled this year.

[–]chasemyers 9 points10 points ago

I've been to that mall. It's, by far, the largest one I've ever been to.

[–]wdhurt 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

then you need to visit dubai mall - MUCH bigger than the mall of the emirates

[–]chasemyers 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Shit, now I'm confused. It's been 7 years, I'm not sure which one it was that I went to.

[–]wdhurt 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

if it was seven years, it must have been MoE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mall_of_the_Emirates

dubai mall didn't open until 2009. it's massssssssive.

[–]chasemyers 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're right, it was definitely MoE. Thanks for clarifying. Ah, memories...

[–]massifjb 31 points32 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Incorrect - Dubai does have numbered streets; Abu Dhabi's neighborhood non-arterial roads however don't have names of any kind.

[–]moltenlead 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used to live there back in the mid-2000s and I remember that whenever I had to go meet a friend, he would just say Interchange 1/2/3/4/5 and that would be as close as I got to a street. Beyond that it would just be #30 Greens or whatever :)

[–]Hegs94 10 points11 points ago

Well I'm assuming it's like it is in country areas in Ireland and other countries (I specify Ireland because it's the same story for my family there). You either have a PO Box or a local postman who simply knows where everyone is/enough about the area to find you.

[–]6times9is42 6 points7 points ago

PO Box is the right answer. I used to use my work address though. Office buildings are usually known by name.

I'm really resisting making a snarky comment along the lines of "The ability to sustain itself once the oil dries up?". It's a chore, believe me.

I could clearly count 99 trucks lined up (I'm not counting the one facing sideways right at the end of the video and at least two heading back, I presume, into town). At 10,000 gallons each, that works out to be a train snake holding 990,000 gallons of poop* If that was boxed up, you'd need a container three quarters the length of a cricket pitch in length, height and width to contain it all. OR you'd need to fill the equivalent of 7,350 average refrigerators** to get rid of it all.

*if each was filled to capacity
**Average capacity, 0.51m³

He also says there is a constant loop of trucks running around Dubai and that one driver's beard had turned orange because he was soaking in it. Oh, and one was drinking the poop water.

I don't know if you want to take his estimates of how long they've been there at face value.

Try building a complex piping system on a foundation of sand. Engineering nightmare. But they are working on it.

[–]Gortos 59 points60 points ago

Try to build a massive city on a foundation of sand, that would be stupi- oh.

[–]RedditorFor5Minutes 20 points21 points ago

If they can build massive buildings, they can build a few pipes...

[–]redmongrel 2 points3 points ago

They should just build giant catapults and shoot it all into the desert wasteland. Who knows, might eventually grow a new rainforest.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

If they can build massive islands than they can build a sewer system.

[–]ayeright 6 points7 points ago

Yes but they can't even do that. Those islands are eroding away already.

[–]XS4Me 7 points8 points ago

That is a sorry ass excuse for lack of city planning. There are lot's of cities with much more complex sewage system out there. Mexico City sewage services 10 times the population of the entire kingdom and is located on swampy land.

Was this not in the planning process of the city? I mean how do you forget on how to add a sewage system, along the line someone must have popped up and said, dude where's my shit going to go?

[–]DubaiCM 44 points45 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They didn't forget. The sewer systems are under construction. Remember that most of the city is less than four years old. It takes time to build infrastructure.

[–]Squarish 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's interesting because you would think they would get all the underground shit(no pun intended) sorted out before putting record high buildings on top of it.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

let me point something out, this country is only 40 years old. before that there was NOTHING. NOTHING I TELL U, just sand and tents.

the country is STILL in the process of getting built. i dont think any of you realizes this.

[–]benisnotapalindrome 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, but I'm going to counter that with New Songdo City, a city that is literally being built in what is currently water. A whole city, from nothing, and there is tremendous focus on sustainability, pedestrian friendly movement, a sense of community, and innovative solutions to infrastructure problems.

In addition to recycling all gray water so as to cut down on freshwater usage, the city will utilize pnuematic waste tubes to dispose of garbage and recycling. No garbage trucks. Contrast that with miles of shit trucks.

I get what you're saying, and yes, it's important to remember that Dubai grew up in what history would call the blink of an eye (as recent as 1991 it would still seem unrecognizable...a few small buildings in the desert). But the city has squandered opportunity after opportunity to solve many of the problems that plague older established cities, who can't change their infrastructure. Starting with a blank slate and all the benefits of technology should be a boon.

[–]Oatybar 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Public planning requires a development mindset that the city is intended to be a public place instead of Billionaire Disneyworld.

Hey guys,

I live in Dubai (Aussie expat) so I guess I'll chime in here.

First, thanks for sharing OP, great shot.

The buildings on the bottom of this shot all look the same because they were built at the same time, by the same developer. Jumeriah Beach Residence (JBR) was the original development along the beach there, then they decided to build that man-made marina along the backside, and eventually filled it in. You can see the other side of these buildings if you want to, my building is pictured in the OP (the building directly to the right of the yacht club with all the boats on the water) and I go kayaking in front of JBR every week.

The lack of greenery and "nature" is something we miss, but the light doesn't really show off much in the shot, each side of the yacht club there are grassy areas with a tiny garden, and across the road is a nice (but small) park, this was one of the draws for living in our building as we have a dog. Otherwise, as noted, you will only see the odd bit of landscaping or palms out the front of buildings.

I think an interesting point here though is there is actually some amazing "nature" in and around Dubai, it's just not what expats are used to. As I mentioned before, I love to kayak on the calm waters of the gulf, fishing is great fun and its lovely and quiet out there.

An hours drive into the "proper" desert gives a stunning landscape, with roaming camels and enormous rolling dunes. Theres the hatta mountains another 30 mins inland, and Oman (a three hour drive) is unbelievable too. Last weekend my buddy and I took the kayak down to abu dhabi (hours drive) and visited the mangroves there, caught barracuda while listening to birdsong, then got up close to a big group of flamingoes before they took flight - there is some impressive nature hidden away amongst all the sand and skyscrapers here.

The "slaves" ... yep, as someone noted, many countries around the world use migrant workers that work for a small fraction of what locals demand, this is true enough. And yes, many come from India where they could flat-out find NO work at all so its a good "opportunity" for them. Clearly we can all relate to this, with taxi drivers, waitstaff, cleaning positions commonly being low paid jobs that locals dont find value in, and are being filled by migrant workers. But the slave moniker is closer to being accurate with the building labourers.. these blokes work through summer, forget health and safety, long hours, tough work, and sometimes (from they people I talk to this is a low percentage, but still) developers will hold employee passports until their yearly vacation, so if they get here and dont like it, they are "held hostage" (im sure a developer would say they are enforcing their employment contract or something) to continue working till then.

To end on a positive, Dubai is incredibly safe, you see no drunks, fighting etc - crime is incredibly low. There is plenty of nature if you look for it, and it's really cool to mix with such a wide variety of locals and expats (my basketball team is made up of nine nationalities for instance). Nine months of the year the weather is brilliant, the other three are nightmarishly hot, and you live inside, but I'm fine with that ratio to be fair, and we are lucky enough to take our holiday in this time. I thought it would be a bit shit before I came and had no knowledge of the place, but it is actually a pretty interesting place.

Wow great post, Dubai seems like a truly interesting, almost other-worldly place. Do you mind me asking what made you make the move to Dubai?

Also, I know you described the issue of migrant workers, but what is the business culture like over there for the more "white collar" types of jobs?

[–]reivax 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, whats the deal with all the buildings on the lower part of the picture? If this is an early morning photo, I suppose that would be the East side. They all look almost identical, designed and built by the same firm clearly, with the identical window construction, same rooftop patterns, same exterior materials, and almost cookie cutter footprints.

Also, I want to know what the slip fees are along the docks in this photo. I'd wager astronomical.

That's the Jumeirah Beach Residence, and those towers were built when property in Dubai was in very short supply and booming like crazy. They're actually really cool and the area around them, especially by the beach, has some of the most active street life in Dubai.

In terms of residents it's actually increased 11% from last year. And along with Qatar is actually experiencing a huge population growth.

In terms of Tourism, Dubai had over 8 million guests in hotels recently.

There are quite a few things to complain about with regards to Dubai, but it being empty isn't one of them. I should know, I was there over the New Years and every single mall and road was bloody annoying to be in because of the huge number of people everywhere.

This is funny because, much like America or anywhere else in the world, the UAE use a migrant workforce with lower salaries to accomplish much of their manual labor. But whereas Mexican manual workers are not seen as slaves in the US, it is acceptable to call the manual workers in the Gulf 'slaves'.

The US just offshores its low income slave labor to places like China so it doesn't have to look at it.

And the rest of the western world. Not just the US.

[–]Kerfuffly 28 points29 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is because of the difference in conditions that these immigrant workers are kept in.

Would Mexican manual workers be called salves slaves if:

  • the employer held the passport of the immigrant, releasing it at his will and whim?
  • there is no legal minimum wage and employers can pay whatever?
  • there is no medicare, state medical aid for immigrants, even if legal?
  • there are companies that do not pay the employee anything whatsoever - their salary "has been sent to your family back home"?
  • it is within the power of the employer to withhold or deduct salary for whatever without informing the employee?

All of the immigrant workers I've talked with there say that they're happy with their pay and that they're able to support themselves and send plenty of money back home.

Although I have seen South Asian workers sleeping on benches.

I've also noticed they basically allow rampant prostitution to keep them satisfied and content, so maybe I'm not getting the full story.

It's a very peculiarly interesting place...

I litrally live in a tower in the middle of this image. Its quiet because its early in the morning.

Dubai is definitly not empty nor is it easily understood by the outside world. All cities are built on "slaves" of some sorts, even if theyre not called that. Over the last few years laws have improved to protect the workers that the city has. Its just a real mixed up place cultrally with no real major majority (maybe indians).

The oil money has fueled its growth but as a tourist destination its great. There is a lot of money drawn to Dubai. Its very popular with CIS, Russian & GCC countries. With all the arab spring and trouble in Iran, afghanistan. A lot of people have made there homes in the UAE.

Personally i like living on Dubai Marina because its warm and i dont pay tax. It can be quite superficial & you feel a mix of poor and lucky. Everytime you see a chrome bugati you feel poor (which happens a lot) but then you will walk round the corner and see about 20 men working who littrally look at you like your a chrome bugati! Its a place of extremes...

This is why I'm glad that money isn't my motivation in life, the thought of looking at a group of people and thinking that they idolise you because of your comparative wealth is truly revolting.

[–]hipstersarepeopletoo 38 points39 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This whole Dubai-bashing thing gets SO tiresome.

It's like, as soon as you see Dubai in the title, you can predict the comments:

  • Slaves
  • Lack of sewage system
  • Incredibly expensive
  • Too many buildings

People see a picture like this and assume the entire city is full of skyscrapers, rarely realizing that this is the 'famous Dubai skyline' - it's just like when you search for an image of any metropolitan area and most of the pictures that come up are of skylines with the same few buildings over and over again. This is a picture of "downtown Dubai". See all that flat stuff in the background? That is what most of Dubai looks like.

I'm not gonna bother countering the other points because there's no point trying to reason with the hivemind.

[–]viglen 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It doesn't really matter what the topic is about. As long as it's about Dubai, then out comes the articles dated to 2008 about how empty it is, or the sewage thing.

I myself am not a fan of Dubai mainly because of the hyper-materialism that is on exhibition there, but that's just typical for any country with an influx of high standard living. If anything, we here in the Middle East like to always put Dubai as a standard of living we all wish to attain.

To come from absolutely nothing, while having relatively little oil, to becoming such a large hub of business and tourism with nothing other then smart investing and smart development is amazing.

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desart. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

The way people in here are rejecting the decadent and materialistic nature of Dubai kind of reminds me of the way third world cultures often claim to abhor the capitalistic western life style. It seems to me that this is a defensive reaction to something that might be perceived as better.
