Another reason we should re-implement the letter "thorn." Þorn looks like þis, and allows for :Þ to look more legitimate, and makes for a good excuse when when you search porn, and your moþer checks your history, and you just say, "Oh, I typed the wrong letter, þey just look similar."

Þis way we can also avoid þe annoying use of "th." It neiþer sounds like a t or an h. We do we use it?

Capital Þorn = Alt0222 Lowercase þorn = Alt0254

Þe more you know.

You know, I don't have a problem with digraphs. If you really want to make an argument about changing the English alphabet, lets start by removing X, Q, and C.

[–]AnarchyAntelope112 20 points21 points ago

But X is so awesome

How else will we be able to tell whether something is "X-Treme" or not?!?

[–]Mikuro 0 points1 point ago

eKstreme? K is kind of badass...right?

[–]HeirToPendragon 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a worthless and confusing letter for those learning the language. It can easily be replaced with "ks" as in fox or "z" as in xylophone. "Qu" is just "kw" and "c" is either "s" or "k" (with "ch" being a problem, but it can be replaced with another digraph or a new letter).

After Þose ʃanges are implemented, we kan finally take kare of Þe troublesome "ph", and replace it wiÞ just "f". Þis will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

But why stop Þere? Publik akseptanse of Þe new spelling kan be ekspekted to reaʃ Þe stage where more komplikated ʃanges are possible.

To start we kan enkourage Þe removal of double letters, whiʃ have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre Þat Þe horibl mes of Þe silent "e" in Þe languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

I Þink we'r rely on to somthing her.

I debated using tʃ, but then you just have two characters again so it doesn't really change anything. I like my way better.

[–]HeirToPendragon 1 point2 points ago

But see, the idea of removing double letters doesn't really clash the same way. Those double letters are actually making the sound twice. Just think of even the word "letter". It is "let"-"ter", so the "tt" has a complete reason to be there.

I understand you're being a bit facetious, but I'm serious about X, Q, and C. I teach English as a foreign language in Korea right now, and those letters are just a mess, especially C.

[–]Lazar_Taxon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, English does not have geminated (doubled) consonants within words. Phonemically, "letter" is simply /ˈlɛtər/. The "tt" serves the orthographic purpose of showing that the preceding "e" is short, but there's only one /t/ pronounced.

[–]sirkazuo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was being entirely facetious, I didn't mean to step on your toes as an English teacher with a legitimate point. I don't really even know English, I just pretend like I do.

[–]p0p0 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or just have "c" become the "ch" sound.

I first learned about þe letter þorn from my TI-Nspire calculator... Þat was also how I found out what þe letter "eth" (a substitute for þorn), cedillas, and ogoneks were.

[–]daedalus733 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In each of those cases (except "thorn") where you replaced "th" with "þ", it should have been replaced by "ð" instead. (ð = voiced, þ = voiceless).

Eth, Ð ð

Dear Sir or Madam,

Your title contains a split infinitive. It should instead read: "Why I try never to use :P"

Cheers!

[–]Qayl 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it also should say ;P

[–]NiceGrammarNazi 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I normally don't like to interfere in another grammar nazi's business, but I am compelled to correct you in this case. There is no grammatical error in splitting an infinitive. It is a holdover from classical linguists who (erroneously, in my opinion) wanted English to be more like Latin, in which infinitives are single words, and can't physically be split. Since infinitives are two words in English, we are free to carelessly split them where we will.

Please have a pleasant day.

[–]EditsGrammarAmiably 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is true that the split infinitive "rule" in English is merely a holdover from the language's Latin heritage. While some may consider such an archaic notion to be a matter of stylistic choice in modern usage, others, like myself, consider splitting an infinitive to be a generally unnecessary informality that, in most cases, does little or nothing to avoid ambiguity. I suppose it is, as you so aptly put it, a matter of linguistic opinion.

It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to discuss such things with a fellow enthusiast.

Cheers!

Oh god, I can relate to this. Smileys make me confused just in general. Now, I understand the occasional =) or =D in a convo, but it's all these others. . .

Look, I'll bring an example about this. I was talking to a girl over facebook and this is roughly a bit of how it was:

Her: So . . . good weekend? ;)

Me: Last weekend? Oh sure, it was alright. Worked, drank coffee. Mostly just the coffee, though.

Her: Haha, you're funny ;) So good weekend! ;) I visited a friend, tried out dresses in [a town] ;)

Me: Hah, I'm a regular comedian :) Oh? You can buy stuff there? I thought there was absolutely nothing to buy in [town].

Her: No, we needed to go [to the city] :P Didn't buy anything :P So she's going to buy it somewhere else :P

I mean, jesus! How am I supposed to interpret that stuff? What's with the winks? What's with the tongue of the mouth? This is what baffles me with smileys.

I generally try too look at it as a half smile. For :D is a full smile with teeth, :P would be a half smile with teeth. Sadly this is the closest I could find on such short notice but imagine something like that with less of the mouth showing teeth.
