Now this will work in theory. Yahoo answers says it will, and benefits the author since its associated with libraries. Unfortunately my card was lost with my wallet, and the libraries are closed because its a holiday today. Try it for yourself and tell me if it works!

[–]makenzie71 11 points12 points ago

That does work if you've got a library card. I've used it. However, the selection isn't always very good. Sometimes it's awesome.

[–]capnjack78 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do you have to have a library card from one of the participating libraries? Or can it be anywhere?

[–]mirgaine_life 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your library has to participate, but I think it's a state-by-state participation (I might be wrong, I only have looked into NH and Mass). It's super easy and awesome. If you go to your local library's website there should be a link to overdrive if they participate.

I <3 libraries.

[–]MissWemmick 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It depends on how your library system is set up (i.e. county, city, state, etc.) but most libraries will have a link on their site for you to access overdrive directly. They also have ebooks available for download.

[–]Prairie_Dog 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My understanding it is via participating libraries. When I log on, it first asks me for my library (and has an option to help me find one nearby), then I follow a link to log on via my local library system using my library card number.

[–]capnjack78 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't see any option to find one nearby. Can you tell me where it is?

[–]nandhp 7 points8 points ago

http://search.overdrive.com/ and click the Library Search tab.

Overdrive also offers for eBooks for most devices, including Kindle. Library participation may vary.

[–]MaryOutside 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The thing with eBooks is that publishers only sell you so many copies of the electronic resource. So, if'n you want to read "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", the library will have maybe 60 copes of the book itself, but only 6 copies of the electronic resource. More and more people have eReaders now (I get a lot of "My daughter got me this Kindle/Nook/etc for Christmas, please tell me how to use it"), but publishers are unwilling to let a bunch of copies go for free that they could be getting money for. OverDrive is pretty cool, though, and if you want academic journals, you can also use Ebsco hosted databases.

Go libraries!

[–]ZootKoomie 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Publishers aren't letting anything go for free. Those ebooks cost more than a paper copy and, unless the library pays a bunch more, all DRMed up so only one person can use it at a time.

[–]junkit33 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ebooks only cost more in certain cases - typically once a book has been out in mass market paperback. And even then, it's usually the same $7-$8.

For new books, it's typically $10 for the ebook vs a $25 hardcover or the "new" edition paperbacks that sell for around $15.

[–]ZootKoomie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm currently purchasing books my library's Overdrive account so I can confirm that this is one of those certain cases. Partially that's because we get a 15-25% discount on paper and none on ebooks. And partially because Overdrive is buying a few copies in different formats so we can be ereader agnostic and can charge a little more for that service.

[–]ZootKoomie 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's the Connecticut Public Library site. Anyone outside that state will need to go to their local public library's website to see if they've got an Overdrive account, and, if so, what books they've got on it.

[–]mindlessfan 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Penguin is cutting ties with OverDrive. This will significantly reduce the number of e-books and audiobooks available to libraries.

Some libraries will let you borrow DVDs for a $1 deposit, at least in NY. The one in my college town had pretty recent DVDs and you could order ones from other libraries in the system if they didn't have what you wanted there.

Libraries are underrated, IMO.

In what way could you appropriately incorporate that into your vocabulary?

[–]thegooddocgonzo 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i never said it would be appropriate...

But for example, I am walking out to my car when I see a most voluptuous woman from afar. I gaze longingly, drinking in the detail and later as I describe her beauty to my friends, they will be told quite frankly that "the ass was fat"

[–]TwinkiePinkie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fair enough. But what I meant by appropriate is that there probably wouldn't be many chances that you could use the phrase without sounding like an idiot. No offense to anyone that uses the phrase and sounds like an idiot.

My friends and I say it all the time when talking about girls.

The biggest ebook/audiobook service for public libraries (by far) is overdrive. There are a few others, like NetLibrary and Recorded Books, but Overdrive is definitely the most prevalent.

Depending on where you live, you may be able to get library cards for many different locations to increase your selection. For instance, I live in California, where most libraries have the requirement of state residency but don't have the requirement of city residency. So when I travel around the state, I collect library cards. I've got San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, Berkeley, Los Angeles (city and county, two different library systems), Santa Monica, and Anaheim.

When I want to search for a particular e-book or audiobook, I typically go here:

http://search.overdrive.com

Which allows me to search for a particular title to see if it's even available by Overdrive, and then narrow it down to California if it is. Then I can see if one of my libraries is on the list and it will provide a direct link to the checkout page.

Having multiple library cards is great for other reasons too. Most libraries will have a few subscription databases that are available to card holders only. Things like Rosetta Stone online for language learning, periodical databases like Proquest, Reference databases like Gale, newpaper archives, image databases, career assistance databases, Test prep materials, literature resource databases, all kinds of stuff available for free if you've got a library card.

Unfortunately, online resources are likely to shrink as libraries continue to get de-funded. California's new state budget cuts all state funding for public libraries for instance. :( However, libraries depend a lot on usage statistics for funding, and downloadable audiobooks/ebooks seem to generate a lot of usage, so it's likely these free services are going to stick around.

[–]MissWemmick 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Online resources also run into issues with publishers not wanted to make it too convenient for people to access ebooks via the library. Penguin recently has decided it will not offer any of their ebooks to libraries.

The UK has a wonderful system where you can search for ebooks in every library in the country. :-)

Once you find what you want, assuming no one else has it checked out, you can take your eReader to that library and download it :-(

I don't think they understand computers very well.

[–]beyerch 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No i think they do understand. They want you to go there and not just randomly download shit. If you want the book enough, you'll make the effort to get it. If not, someone who wants it bad enough to get it.

Imagine how many people check out these books amd never use them just because they are available?

[–]tanithghost88 1 point2 points ago

I know my local library has this same thing. But I dont understand if they actually let you keep it. I mean what is the difference between this system and going to the library, getting the audiobook, going home and importing into your computer? Last time I was there I picked up the last two books of the Millennium trilogy and transferred them. It took about 4-6 hours to do but I still have them months later.

[–]nickxero 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You don't get to keep it. The digital version will automatically disappear. You get the usual 3 week period as if it was a physical book. Obviously, if you put the audio book onto your iPod or similar, it will still be there until you sync the device again.

Overdrive works with select libraries in every Canadian province and Yukon. Check with your local library, or go to http://search.overdrive.com/classic/ and click Canada.

[–]playinodds 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

go google your library. you're looking for the digital area. in canada it will be run by overdrive.

put in your library card number. your pin is often the last 4 digits of your phone number (if not you'll have to ask your library what the pin defaults as).

then take out books. if you have an android or ios device you can download the overdrive app and do it all from there.

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.overdrive.mobile.android.mediaconsole&hl=en

http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/overdrive-media-console-library/id366869252?mt=8

just be prepared to be put on a waiting list for popular and new books, since they have limited copies. other books will be very available.

I've used it! You're on the "honor system" for deleting it from your computer and your devices (if you've transferred it) - it stops playing once it expires on your computer, but not on your other devices (i.e. an ipod). Totally worth getting a library card.

there is no honor system. the books you take out (at least through overdrive) have DRM that disables them after the due date. you can return them earlier to get to take out more books if you're at your limit.

if you have an ios or android device you can do the entire process (browse, take out, read or listen, return) straight from the device using Overdrive Media Console. google it for your platform. Very convenient, and mostly bug free.

Unfortunately, no. You have to actually go into a local branch of the library. You can always call and tell them what you're wanting...there's very specific rules on how you can do things, but they've bent those rules on occasion for me.

Post an ad on craigslist in areas that do have libraries listed. That's how I got card numbers and pins in half a dozen other cities.

wait people just gave you their library card information online? What were they thinking?!

[–]makenzie71 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What fools they were! In minutes after getting their card numbers and online pins not only did I use their full names, completely personal history, social security numbers, and driver's licenses (all information embedded in the library card number) to completely wreck them financially, but I also left them with quite an accrual of library late fees.

Since it seems we're talking about the OverDrive Service that most libraries use, I thought I'd point out there is an App for that:

http://www.overdrive.com/Software/OMC/Default.aspx

Looks like most major computers and mobile devices are supported to some extent.

I did a little happy dance when I discovered Overdrive. Then I dropped my Audible subscription and set up a monthly donation to my public library instead. Our county is bankrupt and my library needs the money much more than Audible.

So, I have about a hundred books sitting idle in my Audible library. Can't sell them, can't lend them, can't leave them in my will when I die. If somebody finds a way I can donate those licenses to my library then I'll sign up for Audible again.

It will be a tragedy if public libraries are forced out of business by commercial publishers and distributors.

I use the overdrive account tied to my local library. It's awesome! I can't ever remember to return real books so I haven't had a library card in 10 years. But I got one specifically when my library started offering digital downloads.

There are programs that monitor your library account, extend everything as long as possible and then warn you loudly ...

(but the libraries hate them, as they want everyone to pay as many overdraft fees as possible)

I spend almost all my work day on the road. It took about a week to get tired of listening to the same 12 songs played on the radio before I started bringing my mp3 player. Then it took about a week to get tired of the same 8 songs I played over and over on my mp3 player.

If it weren't for the overdrive audiobook downloads I'd be mad.

You can do that just as well without a library card, from darker sources.

Then you don't have to wait for other people to "return" them, don't have to crack DRM to play them on Linux, can hear them as long as you want and can hear whatever you want.

Listened to Damned by Chuck Palahniuk on this the other day.

A limitation of the service is a lack of support for a range of devices in particular formats. It's very frustrating to see a title available for Windows but not OSX - that kind of behaviour just encourages piracy transcoding.

It's awesome. I currently have Infinite Jest and George R.R. Martin's A Feast for Crows checked out on my iPad (I also borrowed the first 3 books of the ASOIAF series through OverDrive), and read Murakami's 1Q84 through Overdrive as well. All of these books are 1000+ pages long so I'm glad I didn't have to lug them around. The waitlist for the more popular books is long, but I just put a bunch of eBooks on 'hold' and it's always a nice surprise when you get the email notification that your eBook is ready for checkout. The wait itself isn't that long because the library usually has more than one digital copy.

For anyone living in Philadelphia I highly recommend getting a library card, the system is really easy to use. If they don't have the book you want as an eBook, you can always have the actual book transferred to the library closest to where you live. You can check out books and eBooks at the same time. I also have an NYPL card but have yet to use their OverDrive system.

I got excited too, until I actually tried to download one. They are full of DRM and I couldn't put it on a CD to play in the car, which is the only place I'd ever actually listen to a full audiobook.

Plus, they had some weird shit where they only had "one copy" to loan out, so I had to wait several weeks for the copy to be "returned". I assume it was some licensing thing or else they have no idea what a computer is.

I spent half an hour getting frustrated trying to download a book I wanted, gave up, and had a DRM free copy in 2 minutes off Pirate Bay. Several weeks later I get an email that my digital copy from the library is now ready for check-out. Never tried their audiobooks again.
