      Fun fact: Spanish translates "The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain" as "La lluvia en Sevilla es una maravilla" (Rain in Seville is a wonder)

      It also rhymes and it's still in Spain!

      The Danish version is even worse, roughly translated to English it goes: "A snail on the road is a sign of rain, in Spain.", the reason is that the Danish words for snail, road, sign & rain rhyme :)

        Fun fact: that translation was used often by foreigners to train the pronunciation of "ll", which was different to "y". Nowadays though they are both pronounced the same in Spain.

          The merging is called Yeísmo.

          Back in the day (and still today in many dialects in S. America) there was a distinction between <ll>, pronounced /ʎ/ (a palatal lateral approximant, or the <gl> sound in Italian) and <y>, in most dialects pronounced /ʝ/ (a voiced palatal fricative).

          Both sounds are produced the same place in the mouth (the same location as the English <y>), but are produced in different manners. In the fricative /ʝ/, air flow is constricted through a narrow channel at the place of articulation, causing turbulence, whereas in the approximant /ʎ/, the vocal tract is narrowed at the place of articulation, but not enough to produce a turbulent airstream.

          Now, in dialects with yeísmo, both <y> and <ll> are for the most part pronounced as a /ʝ/, though in Rioplatenese Spanish (in Argentina & Uruguay), the merged sound is a ([ʒ] (French <j> in Je, or English <s> in treasure) or [ʃ] (Eng <sh>)).

            Are you Spanish? I'm Uruguayan and as far a I can distinguish you differentiate the "ll" and "y" quite a lot.

            In Uruguay, for the newer generations specially, the difference is lost for good, it is all pronounced as "ll". On Argentina, specially Buenos Aires, the difference is quite noticeable, but as far as I recall, I always heard Spanish guys pronounce it correctly.

                If you wanted to literally translate "The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain", it would translate to "La lluvia en España se queda principalmente en el país/la llanura."

                It'd be awesome if the literal translation DID rhyme, though.

                                  This reminds me of a time back in '09 when I was on a plane off to Michigan to visit family. I was looking out the window at a storm off in the distance and it looked kind of like that. Anyway, as I was looking out the window, I turned around because I was hearing a lot of commotion going on near the back of the plane. Apparently some schizophrenic guy was on board and he kept shouting about "Herby and the gang" so they had to land the plane to take him off. I thought it was pretty f'd up, but what could I do?

                                          One of the most amazing things I've seen happened in 2000, when I took off from Sau Paulo in Brazil. It was a nighttime flight, and as we climbed out of the city we could see a massive thunderstorm pelting the buildings below with gales, rain, and bolts of lightning.

                                          I'd never seen a thunderstorm from above before that moment, and I'll never forget the sight. It was truly awe-inspiring.
