One sided story? You mean the VIDEO FOOTAGE OF YOU BEATING THE UNCONSCIOUS MAN?!

[–]Fig1024 69 points70 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the idea there is that if the unconscious man did something mean to upset you, you have full right to beat the shit out of him.

That's the lesson for society - if someone upsets you by doing something illegal, it is okay to put aside the laws and just go full vigilante until your bloodlust is satisfied. After that we can follow the laws again.

[–]reddell 6 points7 points ago

Oh god watching that Foxified "news" report on the cops reinstatement makes me want to puke. They present it as an injustice to the cops, and one of them is quoted "we didn't know if we'd be alive 15 seconds after the wreck" in a grave tone.

If the stupid fuck thought it was a life threatening situation then he should have stopped behind his car door, pulled his gun out and issued commands to the suspect instead of charging in with a nightstick.

The jury that acquitted those guys must have been like the mirror image of the OJ jury.

[–]ThePain 132 points133 points ago

He didn't assault a peasant, he assaulted a cop. You know, an actual person, not a thing!

[–]rosts 47 points48 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Does anyone know the reasoning of why it's worse to assault a cop than any other person? It's like when american soldiers die in combat it's a huge tragedy, but I'd think it's rather natural to die in combat. You've chosen to partake in the most lethal project imaginable, and then we're shocked when they actually die?

Cops have chosen to interact with lethal criminals, and when they get in the way of the criminals, society cares less about the average Joe that was killed than the cop that also got killed. The cop is paid to take down criminals, I would think it's more natural a criminal murders a cop than anybody else.

I mean no disrespect, I just want to understand why people reason this way.

[–]Jewnadian 68 points69 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

All force delivery systems work this way because it's the only way for a relatively small number of people to control a larger group. The large population has to believe that any damage to the small group will be met with overwhelming force or they simply stop obeying. People then internalize the concept so they think "Yes, cop assaults are worse than other people being assaulted." even when it goes against their natural inclination to empathy. I know it's cynical sounding but that's pretty muchhow it works.

[–]tjcoyle 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Upvoted for "force delivery systems." That sounds very serious.

[–]bobtheterminator 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think part of it might be that the broadest job description of a police officer is basically to protect people. So when you assault a cop, you're not just assaulting one person, you're damaging the ability of police to protect everyone else. It's the consequences of your actions that raise it from a misdemeanor to a felony.

[–]jernejj 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

and they assaulted him, got fired then reinstated. you know, because when someone flies out of a window of a crashing car, you stomp his face.

Well think about it, that's how gangs work. If you almost kill one of theirs, they will try and kill you. Just in the case of cops, their a "legal" gang and operate the same way. I'm not saying its right, but that's what they are - a gang.

[–]thepapersthepapers 36 points37 points ago

A few similarities I have noticed: 1. They both are territorial. 2. They both wear colors. 3. They both wear hats. 4. They both carry guns. 5. They both like to beat people down in groups.

I completely agree with you. I volunteer at a student-run homeless shelter where I get along well with all the guys, and they definitely have a lot of street smarts because a lot of them come from seedier backgrounds. The one unanimous decision they came up with is that the biggest gang in the world? The police.

I'd also be a terrible cop.

I don't know what happened at that point in the incident.

But.

Just wondering.

What if he almost ran someone over because they laid a strip of spikes across the road?

[–]the_mighty_skeetadon 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And then stood next to it so the guy couldn't go around without hitting him? That is the ridiculous part, to me.

Oh noes, he almost hit a guy who was blocking part of the road with his body and had blocked the rest of the road with spikes? What the fuck do you expect; he WAS trying to escape, idiots.

[–]ModelViewBlah 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I hate this crap, what the hell do you expect to happen when you throw a spike strip in front of a moving vehicle? It's like a cop arresting you for assaulting him because he hurt his hand while punching you. I feel the same way about protests/rallies/marches, they're almost always peaceful until the cops show up and start cracking heads. As long as they keep up the 'STOP RESISTING' they can pretend they aren't the agitators.

Some family friends are buffalo cops. Lets call them the "Smiths" The Smiths seem to comedown with Smith-Syndrome every summer that lasts mysteriously for the duration of summer. Sometimes only one of them gets sick, but for the last 5 years, one has always had the summer off on paid sick leave because of smithsyndrome.

[–]Barnowl79 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is more true than people know. Recently a prospective cop was not allowed to be instated into the police academy due to his IQ being "too high." The reasoning was that his high intelligence would cause him to become bored with mundane police work and quit early. So yeah, cops evidently are not allowed to possess anything above average intelligence. God forbid they understand constitutional law or have a highly developed sense of ethics that would supercede their orders.

[–]Captainpatch 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Alright, you're hired. Now remember to have your dashcam "malfunction" before committing police brutality, and if you run out of toilet paper while shitting on people's rights just use the constitution.

They're still people. People are prone to emotionally-driven behavior. Doesn't make it right, doesn't excuse them from disciplinary action.

My first thought when I saw this was "that dude killed or tried to kill a cop" - that's the only thing that explains the emotional response from every single cop on the scene.

sometimes people say stupid things on reddit and phrase it like they're gonna be downvoted. But if you spent more than twenty minutes on reddit you'd know the hivemind agrees with them.

therefor "so brave" is used in jest, to mock the person for not being daring at all

for instance "I'm sorry but i just think if you have a hole in your ear that's bigger than 9mm, you need a 9mm hole that goes all the way through your head"

You know, I understand how it could be tempting to beat the shit out of an idiot. If that idiot risked your life, or the lives of your partners, I can see how it is even more tempting. I get that.

Giving in to those urges make you a shitty cop. HOWEVER, to beat an unconscious (potentially dead) man.... that take a mentally ill person. This type of behavior borders on psychopath. I just don't get it. What did they...I just don't get it.

[–]DrAwesome44 4 points5 points ago

That is so inhumane it disgusts me. At that point, the officers should be protecting and serving that man, by making sure he is okay. I know it sounds wired to say they should be protecting and serving the criminal they were chasing, but he was thrown from a rolling car, they have the human and moral obligation to make sure he is okay, not gangbang and potentially kill a dying man. Sickening.

It is believed by some that although [Rodney] King was black, the beating had nothing to do with his ethnicity or race, it was merely the result of over excited police officers.

Yes. Overly excited to beat the shit out of a black guy.

Actually it sounds legit... but also like something that an ordinary citizen would get arrested for.

Like if somebody tried to mug me and I stomped their fuckin face in afterward. I think that's justified but I'd still probably get arrested for it.

[–]prencey 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not sure you can argue how legit it is. In the cases listed on the wikipedia page, neither man was unconscious. If you got mugged but then the mugger had a heart attack, do you think you'd still beat the shit out of him after he was lying on the ground unconscious?

Knowing about situations where the animal part of the brain likes to take over should mean you adjust your behaviour to remain in control at all times.

Unfortunately, self-control seems to be a lacking characteristic these days.

[–]boringlesbian 35 points36 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's pretty much my take on it. There is apparently a syndrome for everything. On one hand, adrenaline can make people do crazy things. On the other, I think the police should be held to a higher standard of self control.

I agree. But you can't give someone higher self control. You have to hire people that have it already. And if we're going to do that, we have to make policing a job that is tolerable for normal people. As it stands now, the people that work in shittier areas are all psychopaths or saints.

[–]goldenf56 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Guys I'll clarify what this syndrome says. It says that when someone gets pumped up, if they're police officers, then it's perfectly okay for them to use their position of power to take some anger and frustration out on a incapacitated person. The reasoning is that if you had your adrenaline pumping, then you aren't able to make decisions correctly and it's ok to nearly beat someone who's probably dying to death.

Of course this is just a made up syndrome which offers officers an excuse for not being able to handle themselves in certain situations.

[–]reddell 2 points3 points ago

High Speed Pursuit Syndrome

A fancy name for what happens when you allow people with low impulse control to have authority and power over other people.

This is all too common, that when someone seriously injures or kills, or at least tries to kill a cop, for whatever reason they might "get over" and not get punished at all. So the police rough them up, so that "at a minimum", they will have to spend time in the hospital, even if they will face no other charges.

It's the last chance the police will have to exact revenge.

Not sure if I'll get downvoted for this but here it goes:

Police brutality is bad and a disgrace to the public. We hold police officers to a higher etiquette when handling these things. These statements I completely agree with.

Now for the dicey part:

for the people saying "derp-e-derp-e-derp america sucks", these cops are doing what any UNTRAINED human would do under duress. one of their co-workers was almost ran over intentionally, I'd be pretty pissed too. Now to close the sandwich off with another agreement: They should be trained to NOT react like this. All I'm saying is that it is human nature, despite it being trained out of you.

TL;DR These cops need better training

[–]trollfriend 4 points5 points ago

I was once speeding towards a nearby hospital because my friend was severely injured in the backseat and Russians were after us to get us (long story). Then, a big SUV started following us at full speed, tailgating us and high beaming us, so I made the necessary moves to try and lose it, thinking the whole time it was the Russians. After 5 minutes of being chased, the SUV turns on its siren. Shit, undercover cop. Two cruisers are already standing by around the corner waiting for us. I slam the breaks. Multiple cops come out with their weapons drawn and tell me to turn off the car and get out with my hands behind my head. I do exactly so. As soon as I get out I get pushed to the ground, foot and knee on my back and a solid punch to the back of my head. I yell out in pain as the cop pushes down on my back with his boot even harder and tells me to shut up. Eventually after they realized what had happened, the cop tried defending his case by saying that next time I should stop on the side of the road and call 911 if I think I'm being followed by malicious individuals and have a friend is in distress, which of course is a ridiculous thing to do unless you are planning to die. He then proceeded to tell me to stop bitching and take an Advil for my headache. I ended up in the hospital with my friend the same night with a concussion.

Cops, man.

Apparently the officers were fired...

"Five Birmingham police officers fired Tuesday on charges they used excessive force on a man after a pursuit have appealed the decision to the Jefferson County Personnel Board, authorities said.

A hearing officer will investigate the claims and make a recommendation to the Personnel Board's three-member governing body. The officers involved each have between 7 and 15 years of experience on the police force.

Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper and Mayor Larry Langford announced today the firing of the five officers based their roles in the videotaped beating of a man following a police chase on Jan. 23, 2009. Disciplinary action also will be taken against supervisors who failed for months to report the incident to higher-ups, officials said."

I personally don't think this man was trying to kill the cop, but rather avoid the spike strip. If he had shot at him or something it would've been different, but the cop ran in front of a moving car. Obviously this man is in the wrong, but not everything is black and white. Someone almost hitting a fellow officer doesn't give them the right to stomp his unconscious body after an already traumatizing accident. They are engaging in activity which they swore to protect against. These cops should be institutionalized.
