[–]pour_some_sugar 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the wild nothing would be messing with this bear since it would have a really pissed-off mama bear that they would have to get through first.

As an adult, black bears have no predators, so very few animals would be willing to 'fuck with' it. A whole wolf pack could, but not even individual wolves.

[–]HonoraryMancunian 2 points3 points ago

Don't feel so bad. The bear is learning to play with other animals.

[–]Kielo_Van 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's not play--notice its body language and the sudden bite to the lion's ear for example: that's defensive behavior. Nor should they be putting a monkey and lion with a bear. Why not other bear cubs? This bear is not going to be playing with fucking monkeys and lions when it's fully grown. Bears are naturally solitary animals and rarely engage in prolonged social behavior in their natural habitat.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]Kielo_Van 0 points1 point ago

I fail to see the point you're trying to make here. These two obviously recognize each other, by the body language--my guess is they were introduced from a very young age, possibly raised together in the same environment--and are already bonded: this is not a first-time encounter. Besides this, young animals in general are more prone to socializing than adults and adolescents.

Cognitive dissonance in this thread is amazing. They aren't torturing the animal for the sake of some Japanese "game show", as everyone's so quick to assume.

It's a Korean television show where the laugh-track basically includes relevant personalities laughing in the corner. They are watching a bit about a zoo (in Korea) that is trying to socialize this scaredy-bear so that he can be around other animals and potentially be released into the wild.

His reactions are priceless, they can't help that he gets so "terrified" (you're personifying the bear way too much by assuming his human-like actions here represent human-like emotions) during a regular and healthy exercise, and the whole bit was filmed BEFOREHAND, they weren't messing with the bear, live, to make people laugh. Even if you don't speak Korean, a lot of this is obvious by watching.

This isn't animal cruelty, it's fucking hilarious.

[–]rmhawesome 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If a bear can't hold his shit together when faced with other animals, he's just a house pet. What people in this thread don't realize is that it would be more cruel to keep baby-ing the bear for a life of captivity than building up his courage towards other animals and then releasing it into the wild. I bet these people don't get pissed when humans play pranks on each other, but from the way people act in this thread you'd think they'd chastise wild animals for killing their prey. Get over yourselves, ultimately it's for the best of the bear

[–]Narrenschifff 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're makin' that bear into a MAN! A MAN BEAR! RARRRR

[–]pour_some_sugar 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the wild this bear cub would have a mama bear that would tear any threat to shreds.

Those bears don't grow up to be 'house pets'.

[–]rmhawesome 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In captivity they don't get to see a protective mother fighting for them, showing them that ain't no one fucks with tiny bear. If they grow up scared of everything and not realizing that they're meant to fight back then they're worse off

[–]SecretSnack 23 points24 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

(you're personifying the bear way too much by assuming his human-like actions here represent human-like emotions)

You lost me here. Bears and humans experience the fight or flight reflex, we're both relatively intelligent mammals, why is it a stretch to assume the bear is freaked out?

[–]HHSHawx 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The bear IS freaked out, and that's the problem. It obviously freaks out way too much to be able to survive in the wild, and the zookeepers are trying to help him out by exposing him to harmless animals. I mean really, that bear smelled that monkeys piss and just about jumped up and hit the ceiling.

[–]kittybear 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I only meant that a lot of the humor comes from how human-like the bear's fear is - he jumps up to stand on two legs, his eyes get wide, etc., but he isn't capable of feeling the depths of human emotions.

trying to socialize this scaredy-bear so that he can be around other animals and potentially be released into the wild.

Why would a wild bear need to "socialize" with animals from other species? With lions?

[–]Jaihom 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

God, Reddit has some terrible fucking logic.

"They're laughing at a video of a bear being scared...it's clearly animal torture being done solely to make people laugh!!!!!!!"

Correlation =/= causation, and the goal isn't for the bear to be terrified. The goal is for the bear to no longer be afraid of everything to such an uhealthy degree. If you were to watch the full video, this is achieved. In the end the bear gets over it and plays with the lion.

This is not animal cruelty. It is not animal cruelty being done for the enjoyment of people.

[–]HanselSoHotRightNow 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with you, the goal is teaching the animal to be around other animals and in the context of socialization, it doesn't matter what they choose as the socializing agent, if you will.

The important thing is that it learns not to greet everything with utter terror. You can bet that if this video was presented, instead, in a documentary like fashion where they explain the purpose of these exercises, you would see a lot less of those who choose to post out of ignorance because they hear people laughing at an animal's fear.

It's an instinct in humans, women especially, to want to protect a young person or animal when it shows signs of fear. Any rational thought goes out the window and irrational thoughts and actions take over to do whatever they can to protect the scared baby.

grr I signed up to reddit just to answer this.

First of all, the original bear/tiger/monkey video is from korean show. it looks nothing like that japanese show that you are seeing. there are no people just aww-ing and say something dumb.

One thing that I found weird is... why did this japanese show completely censor off watermarks? Koreans always show them and say things like "video credit to BBC, NBC" or stuff like that.. hmmm weird

anyways, as to the animal cruelty... the video shows a timid zoo bear becoming more aggressive one just like normal ones. He was originally placed along with other baby beasts, but he was too scared that he was placed with something weaker, smaller, and friendlier like monkey. idk how this is animal cruelty. it's a small zoo where there simply isn't enough room for individual room and enough cubs to segregate them by species

Exactly the way I would react if a lion as big as me approached me in an enclosed area.

As explained by another poster, they were just trying to help the bear get over it's irrational fears, which it seemed to do. In all honesty, you need to stop making snap judgments and lighten the fuck up.

Animals are smarter than you think.

[–]anubus72 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the bear will remember being terrified and also remember that nothing bad happened. Eventually it will no longer be terrified of the lion. That's why they put them in the same area

[–]JtheHomicidalManiac -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do you have an accurate representation of how smart i think animals are?

The bear is not going to be emotionally scarred because they don't think the same as humans. Everybody is just personifying the bear. It's a bear. A baby bear granted, but to think it's going to carry this even to the end of the day is ridiculous.

[–]SkaterDrew 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's obviously not going to cry itself to sleep at night.

But maybe you should watch a BBC documentary called 'super smart animals'

[–]Zuigen 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I really hope the guy moving behind the lion is going to get the bear out of there. There's a point when bears could be pretty 'meh' about a lion of any size, that little dude has a long while before he gets to that point.

[–]Jaihom 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except for the fact that the point was to have the bear with the lion. Taking the lion away would only reinforce the bear freaking the fuck out when it sees the lion. If you were to watch some other videos, this is actually 100% effective; by the end, the bear is no longer running away from the lion like a little bitch.

This isn't even the funniest part. The funniest part is where he almost gets a heart attack after a delayed reaction from his own shadow.

He's like "WTF is this??" then comes the realization, then the fear. So much fail in this bear, unbelievable.

People ragging without knowing the context. That's Reddit for you.

So when a human is afraid of everything, it's because his living situation is completely shitty? Nope, it's called a mental disorder. One method to cure it is shock therapy and that's what the bear went through. You can see at the end of the video that he's playing with the other animals and isn't afraid of them anymore.

[–]Tovora -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not an expert on bears, but surely it's unusual for a bear to be afraid of it's own shadow. This bear is living in fear because of how poorly it is being treated.

[–]DZ302 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You appear to be an expert on knee-jerk reactions.

The bear is living in fear because it was born in captivity, they are doing this training to socialize the bear with other animals, by the end the bear went from being afraid of it's own shadow to play-fighting with the lion cub and other young animals, so they could eventually release it back into the wild. A Japanese gameshow picked up on the pre-recorded Korean TV footage and thought it was funny.

The bear is not mistreated, there is nothing wrong here.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Well, the lion is pushing forward but not really touching the bear, so it's pretty close.

[–]ImKindOfBlind 0 points1 point ago

Carlos won that fight because he played his plan. Nick is a great striker and jiu jitsu guy, so trying fight like everyone wanted him to would have resulted in nick winning. Just my thought.

Bears and lions used to be put in fight matches against each other back in the day- the bear always wins. Lions have nothing on a bear. QI fact

Okay, there seem to be two kinds of response to this so far. The bear is terrified (bad) to overcome his abundant fear (good).

My only question is, if the bear is scared of everything, why put it in with a lion and a hyperactive monkey? It was scared of the monkey piss! Let alone the monkey itself.

Why not put him in with other bears, or less frightening animals?
