Well, for the attack on Hitler part, I don't think he wanted to overextend the .gif, it was long enough already. Also, maybe he wanted Hitler to attack the USSR late just so he could use the line "I'll clear a path for you." That was hilarious.

[–]Captain_English 32 points33 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep.

Chronologically wrong, and a really outdated/American view of the war. It was mostly Russia, bitches.

EDIT: Addressing the comments, I don't dispute that America provided assistance to the war effort internationally, nor that it's production capability was extensive. However, this gif portrays America as the military heroes of every theatre. This is simply untrue.

United Kingdom and United States deaths, both civilian and military, in the second world war are slightly under 900,000.

This is fewer than Yugoslavia, which suffered over 1,000,000 deaths. The Soviet Union as a whole lost in excess of 23,000,000 people, or nearly fifty times as many as the United States. German deaths exceeded eight million.

You may keep your view that American productivity won the war, and that America was the key arms dealer of the 1940s. But you cannot dispute that militarily it is a story between Russia and Germany, at least in Europe.

...And as a side note, somewhat in the Pacific, too. The threat of Russian involvement in an invasion of Japan was a significant factor in persuading the Japanese to surrender, even after the atomic bombings.

[–]sirbruce 40 points41 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Jesus Christ, please stop repeating this fallacy some anti-American demagogue told you in college or on the Internet or whatever. The USSR would have lost the war without America's assistance. The US Lend-Lease program shipped $11.3B worth of goods to the Soviet Union. You might want to read up on the Arctic Convoys, the Persian Corridor, and the Pracific Route. Stalin himself said America's production advantage won the war.

[–]toodrunktoocare 31 points32 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would reccomend everyone read The Complete History Of World War 2 by Martin Gilbert. After that it should become obvious that no one country is responcible for the victory and that the war was in fact won by the collective action of the allies. Each country played its part, their individual victories and sacrifices are what made overall victory possible. If any of the big players had failed to have played their roles the way they did, the others would have likely ended up suing for peace.

[–]B_Blunder 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yay, sanity at last :D

[–]damienreave 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think you're both right. World War Two would have been lost without American war materials being shipped to the Soviets and British, and no one disputes this.

However, saying that 'It was mostly Russia', isn't inaccurate. The Russian people disproportionately bore the hardship and sacrifice in the war, a fact glossed over by most Cold War era classrooms, and make it seem as if America and D-Day won the whole war. In fact, by the time D-Day launched, the Germans were already inevitably going to lose. D-Day did nothing except hasten the end of the war... and I suppose save millions from being trapped behind an even larger Iron Curtain.

[–]Durrok 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well their strategy, while effective, wasn't exactly the most humane ever. That had a lot to do with their hardship and sacrifice, at least in terms of the military.

[–]sirbruce 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can't separate the two. To say Germany was going to lose without D-Day implies that all American involvement was unneeded, but in fact it was critical before then for the USSR's survival. Heck, even if you paint a scenario where America is involved but never invades France or North Africa, a stalemate and truce with the USSR is a far more likely outcome.

The fact that Russia lost more men in the war doesn't mean they were responsible for winning it.

[–]ashmole 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, thank you.

This reminds me of another point too: anyone who says that Overlord wasn't needed because Russia would have "eventually" won the war, is a buffoon. People don't like fighting wars forever, so anything to hasten a defeat is needed. Moreover, had the western powers not intervened, then all of western Europe would have been under Stalin's domain.

[–]sirbruce 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be sure, Hitler made mistakes in attacking the USSR in the first place, and then not pressing for Moscow when he did. But even after Stalingrad, had there been no Western Front to worry about, things probably would have reached a stalemate on the East.

But that's only half the story. Without American involvement, Japan would have eventually rolled through China and on into the USSR from the other side. More importantly, without the Manhattan Project, the USSR would never had stolendeveloped the atomic bomb... but the Germans would have, before 1950. And then it would be Game Over for the Soviet Union.

[–]haredond 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This exactly. Germans ran out of bullets trying to kill the russians.

"The war was won by American productivity" -- Stalin

Clearly he was being modest. Also, Germany could've beat the Russian winters and probably would have done more in Russia if it weren't for the US/England pushing on the Western front.

It's impossible to underestimate America's role in the Second World War. The largest economy in the world, the biggest oil exporter (yeah, we were once the Saudi Arabia of the world), and we also had a pretty good sized military. We helped supply England, Russia, France, and many other European countries, as well as other countries in the Pacific.

It wasn't a single country war, though. Russia, England, Italy, etc. fought tooth and nail.

[–]filioqueclause 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Germans were fighting off the Russian winters in 41/42. The US and UK didn't land in Europe til 43 (Italy) and 44 (France).

Replace England with Britain. Everyone seems to make the mistake of thinking England is the whole island..

[–]Starslip 3 points4 points ago

Except the whole island wasn't involved. Ireland was still technically part of britain at the time but was a neutral party in the war (thanks Archer)

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

Britain is the island including Wales, Scotland, England. Ireland is the island to the west including Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland. Note that the formal name of the UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

[–]MistahFinch 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope. Republic of Ireland was independant during WW2.
ROI participated at the top. Although they didn't officially help in the war the head of State secretly gave Britain a lot of help.
The Government didn't outwardly admit there was a world war at the time.

[–]Starslip 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ireland was in 1939 nominally a dominion of the British Empire and a member of the Commonwealth. The nation had gained de facto independence from Britain after the Anglo-Irish War, and the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 declared Ireland to be a 'sovereign, independent, democratic state'. A new constitution was adopted by a plebiscite in 1937. The Statute of Westminster meant that unlike in World War I, Britain's entry into the war no longer automatically included its dominions. Relations between Ireland and Britain had been strained for many years; until 1938 the two states had engaged in the Anglo-Irish Trade War.[1]

Nevertheless, Ireland did not sever its vestigial connection with the Crown and it was not until the Republic of Ireland Act 1948 that the final nominal link was severed. No representatives of the new state attended Commonwealth conferences or participated in its affairs, but Ireland remained a legal member until the British Ireland Act 1949, which accepted the declaration of a Republic and formally terminated its membership of the Commonwealth.

TL;DR - They were still technically a part of the British commonwealth until 1949, but LanaLanaLanaaaa is probably correct that I'm using "Britain" more loosely than intended

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just because Russia lost more men than every oter nation combined is a horrible reason to why you think Russia won the war. Russia's winter is the only thing that saved them.

[–]sirbruce 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your edit does nothing to help your argument. Having more deaths doesn't make you the "hero" of anything. The United States was the hero of WW2 because without them, large swatches of the Earth would have been under despotic domination. As it was, only the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe fell under despotic domination... which hardly casts the Soviets in a good light, here.

I can indeed dispute that militarily it is the story between Russia and Germany and Europe, because without American military support, the Russians would not have lasted. Yes, threat of Russian involvement helped persuade the Japanese to surrender... after America dropped the bomb on them. No bomb and Japan would have gone right back to not being threatened by the Soviets. No America and Japan would have been invading the Soviets from the other side. No America, no bomb, means no Soviet bomb, which means Germany would have gotten the bomb.

Any way you slice it, the USSR would not have won the war on their own. The best they could have hoped for was a stalemate.

[–]Captain_English -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I still very flatly disagree with you. I think that in their attempts to portray themselves as the heroes of the war, Americans forget the significant cost is not money or materiel or anything but human lives. Trying to usurp the reflection of that sacrifice by claiming to have been heroic and decisive is very offensive. As I said in my original post, American involvement in the war was a complete side show until the invasions of 1944, and even then the Russians still had already begun to win the war.

Being essential in terms of equipment support does not make you the hero of the story. That is truly earned through, say, an incredible number of sacrifices defending your homeland and the countries of others.

If America was the winning force in Europe, why were the Soviet influences allowed to remain when they were "despotic"? Why did the Soviets take Berlin, not the Americans, and then have to wait for the Allies to join up? I am not trying to insult America, I am simply trying to prevent the cold-war legacy perception that America won World War 2 from perpetuating. It's undeserved to take that away from the millions of terrified Russian conscripts who died to defend their homeland.

Ever seen that futurama where zapp brannigan is introduced, and he talks about how he fed wave after wave of his own men into the killbots until they hit their kill limit? Yeah, that was russia's strategy

Wait what about the part where Russia made a mutual treaty to divide up Poland with the Germans in the first place?

[–]5eraph 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They were invited, punch was served. Check with Poland.

...and raped half of Eastern Europe in the process!

I keed, I keed, except not really. There was so much rape.

I recall the part where Russian charged machine gun nests, got the holy fuck kicked out of them, and then finally made a charge after the western allies did. Thanks for being a bullet sponge and keeping the Nazi's busy. God knows the communist armies of the time were ill-equipped, out trained, and had inferior technology. They were a horrendous military force.

But America totally sold guns to Britain before getting involved. It was called the Cash and Carry program.

In the teamtalk part, you left out "Oh hey ya guys press the 'Navajo' button" in response to "Don't you noobs know what teamtalk is?"

De gaulle shouldn't be at the beginning of the game he should join mid game. Maybe put Pétain at the beginning or something, that would lead to an hilarious exchange between Hitler and Pétain. Also there should be Mussolini and maybe franco.

[–]esdawg 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not a strategy game. More like League of Legends considering the shitty manners.

I know this is probably missing the point but Germany and Russia did not have a truce. They had a "Non-aggression Pact" which meant if either of the nations went to war, the other would not enter the conflict on the other side.
