Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

[–]blackinthmiddle -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Explain to me why it's pretty clear.

[–]SaltyBabe 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Genetics for eye color are very cut and dried, we know how it works, we know why it works and within what limits it works. All blue eyed people have a common ancestor and with in the range of "normal" blue eyes will appear because of that shared gene. Things outside of this gene will also pop up, things like this little girl. It's not with in the range of "normal" which is why she ended up posted on line, her eyes are extraordinary to a point of being surreal. When you find something so outside the norm when it comes to something as well understood as eye color, it's safe to say it's easily pin-pointable to illness.

There are four types. One type is really only characterized by the eyes and an accompanying intestinal issue.

[–]blackinthmiddle 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Very blue eyes... [1] Waardenburg syndrome.

According to the link you provided, the conditionals present with this syndrome are:

Major: * sensorineural hearing loss (unless there's a story surrounding this picture, we can't assume this)

  • iris pigmentary abnormality (two eyes different color or iris bicolor or characteristic brilliant blue iris) (I've seen many people with eyes this blue. Does she have this syndrome as well then?)

  • hair hypopigmentation (white forelock or white hairs at other sites on the body) (no evidence of this that I can see)

  • dystopia canthorum (lateral displacement of inner canthi) (I looked this one up and I'm still not quite sure what is meant by it.)

  • first‐degree relative previously diagnosed with Waardenburg syndrome (again, no way to tell from looking at a picture)

Minor: * skin hypopigmentation (congenital leukoderma/white skin patches) (don't see any)

  • medial eyebrow flare (synophrys) (maybe)

  • broad nasal root (nope, the child's nose seems typical)

  • hypoplasia alae nasi

  • premature graying of the hair (before age 30). (nope)

Based on the defs above this kid and this woman seem to fit the description to a tee. Does the kid that the OP posted have this syndrome? Maybe. But the only evidence we're presented with is what looks like an "indian/paskistani/something along those lines" girl with brilliant blue eyes.

edit: formatting bullets problems.

[–]Catten 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think I disagree about the nose. The picture does not show it very well though.

Putting Waardenburg up as a possible explanation was more prompted by a rash of such images on reddit this past month. It may be, as you postulate, just blue eyes.

[–]FrozenBananaStand 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Recessive genes are beautiful. It always makes me wonder, if blue eyes were the dominant genotype, would we covet brown eyes?

[–]SodaCan 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Waardenburg syndrome is usually passed down Dominantly, this is not a recessive disease.

[–]blackinthmiddle 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've seen a number of people post this. Considering she shows NONE of the facial characteristics of Waardenburgs, she show none of the skin characteristics and she shows none of the hair characteristics (forget about the symptoms like hearing loss. Obviously that can't be proven by a picture), how are you making this diagnosis, doctor? Just because she has brilliant blue eyes? Is that the only thing you're basing this on or is there something else I'm missing? If you're basing it just on eye color, again I ask, does she have Waardenburg's as well?

[–]SodaCan 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, she has photoshop.

[–]FrozenBananaStand 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If it is Waardenburg, sure, it's a dominant trait passed from her parents. Even still, blue eyes are viewed favorably as a result of them being (traditionally) recessive traits...

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

might be a cultural thing, these eyes look like a demon's eyes to me, not what I'd 'covet'.

[–]dont_get_it 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Apparently in the middle east they were/can be very superstitious about blue eyes. They believed you had the evil eye.

Seeing hers, I can see where people might react like that, with tragic consequences I imagine.

Evil eye, Isabat al-’ayn, is a common belief that individuals have the power to look at people, animals or objects to cause them harm. In Islam, God is the only one who can protect against the evil eye; no object or symbol can. Muhammad prohibited the use of talismans as protection against the evil eye because it is idolatry, the form of protection allowed being supplication to Allah.

I never understood white people's obsession with blue eyes. Is it supposed to be rare or something? Five out of the last seven or so guys I've dated have all (coincidentally) had blue eyes. Thought is was pretty common?

[–]SodaCan 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Only 2.2% of the human population has blue eyes.

[–]blackinthmiddle 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know if anybody is "obsessed" with blue eyes. But my guess is that you're getting voted down because of the "Five out of the last seven or so guys I've dated..." comment. Are you kidding me? So you think your little anecdotal evidence proves anything?

[–]GrandChawhee 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't care that I'm being downvoted and I was just asking an honest question, since I am obviously not white but always hear white people talking about blue eyes. I wasn't offering anecdotal evidence as fact. If I were it would have been more like "Blue eyes are quite common because every guy I date has them." This is why I asked. You have no logical reason to be defensive about it.

Thanks, sodacan, for actually answering my question.

Where's the pupils?

[–]l80 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Constricted. You see, pupils expand and constrict to allow light in, or restrict it. In low light, our pupils expand to allow more light in. In bright light (as in the picture), they contract.

With light eye colors, the effects tend to be more dramatic, which is why a lot of people with light colored eyes wear sunglasses.

[–]EmpressSharyl -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Normally, I would agree, but her pupils, such as they are, are way too small for regular constriction due to bright lighting.

It looks more like she's wearing weird contacts, or the picture was photoshopped. I would eliminate the contacts, because of her age, so I'm left with photoshop, or she's a mutant of some sort maybe.

[–]l80 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Seriously? Are you an eye doctor?

My eyes get like this in bright light. I see it every morning when I put on my eye makeup in front of the window. Just has to do with very light colored / blue eyes - you tend to be much more light sensitive. You can tell it's very sunny in that pic.

[–]EmpressSharyl -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm a photographer. Have been doing it professionally, and for pleasure, for over 30 years. If you look at the photo, it's a bright day, but her face is in the shade. There isn't any bright light directly on her at all. I've known and photographed people with eyes of an even lighter blue than what she has, and their pupils never looked like that, even when I would put a high-powered light shine directly into them to bring out the color.

[–]l80 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If I'm looking into the light, especially if I've just come from a darker / shaded area, my eyes will contract quite quickly. Just because her face is shaded does not mean that whatever she is looking at is not bright.

The sun looks like it's behind her, which is why her face is in shadow. If it's shining on something light, or metallic, and causing a reflection, it will still have the same effect. It doesn't have to be the light of a thousand suns up in her face for her pupils to constrict dramatically. All she has to do is look at something bright for them to do that.

[–]EmpressSharyl -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. However, her pupils are so tiny, they are about the size of pinheads. Very strange, in my opinion. Again, this does not look normal at all to me.

[–]l80 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I get that it doesn't look normal to you, but I don't accept that your being a photographer makes you qualified to judge what is normal.

I'm telling you from personal experience, and the assurance of my eye doctor, this is normal. My pupils constrict pretty remarkably in low-wattage bathroom lighting. I'll give you a hint what they do in normal daylight.

Yes, it's really dramatic looking. Yes, it's why I had a stupid number of glamor shots of myself when I was sixteen for that exact reason. It's really not that big of a deal. It tends to be more dramatic in people with blue eyes than gray or green eyes though, which I believe has to do with lack of melanin. I think, if I remember right, blue eyes have the least melanin in them of any eye color.

Sadly, I also have the kind of photosensitivity that makes me sneeze in bright light. So the sexiness doesn't last all that long.

[–]EmpressSharyl -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, we will just have to agree to disagree. Though you are being kind of a douche about it for some reason. No need to be insulting.

[–]alphanovember 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Looks like makeup to me. But the irises do look shopped regardless. That weird circular sci-fi cloud pattern does not manifest itself even in diseased people. Not beautiful at all, just looks like one of those crappy experimental projects beginner photoshop users put out by the thousands on deviantArt (I say this as someone who was in that position and did that very thing many eons ago).

NatGeo says it's real but I still have my doubts that the photog didn't in some way manipulate it. Take note of how all the blue areas in that picture are way too saturated.

[–]Mackinstyle 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I find it far creepier than beautiful. As I said in another post, there's something about how much the skin tone and eye colour contrasts that can move it from the range of beauty into the range of eerie. She's going to devour my soul... =(

[–]Froggums42 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think part of the creepiness here is how small her pupils are. Even in very bright light, I don't think I've seen anyone's pupils constrict that much before.

[–]l80 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most people with blue eyes, especially pale blue eyes, retract in bright light that way. Mine definitely do this - which is why I usually wear sunglasses when it's bright out. You can tell in the picture it's quite sunny.

The girl is everything. All that once was and all that will be. The girl controls time and space, love and death. The girl can see into your mind. The girl can see into your soul!

Sadly this won't get nearly as much attention as the white chick in the post titled Blue Eyes.

Edit: as of this moment the net upvotes for this is higher than the white chick, but the gross votes and comments are still higher for the other.

I was taught that if you were blue-eyed in India, you were considered of a higher caste. Now, I can understand why.
