I don't understand the underlying psychology of individuals such as this; do they actually get enjoyment out of purposely pissing people off? How is posting the antithesis of what people want to hear, with the expectancy to obtain downvotes, fun? What is accomplished and what feelings does this action invoke in the individual that promotes reprising?

[–]Valid_Argument 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I'm looking for downvotes, I usually do it by posting something people will disagree with that has that also has something in it questioning their ability to accept another viewpoint. When they downvote it I chuckle at the irony.

Also, sometimes pissing people off is fun.

Adobe Acrobat - 300MB installation and 3 updates a week - Just to read PDF files.

I've used Foxit for years but even that has gone from a 2-3Mb download to 20.... ಠ_ಠ

Computing power & memory has just made developers lazy!

Adobe Reader 10.1.2 is 160MB and it probably updates more like once a month. Just sayin.

[–]arglebargle2 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Switch from foxit. There are other free readers that aren't as bloated.

[–]IDangleFreely 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Such as? I use Foxit and have noticed it feeling bloated lately

[–]arglebargle2 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sumatra is probably the least bloated and open source, but its simple.

I use pdf-xchange.

I don't remember when I switched from foxit what my issue was, I think it might have been installing toolbars or some other crap.

[–]LNMagic -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They aren't lazy. Adobe Reader can open far more documents than just PDF. If that's all you use it for, Foxit is indeed a better fit.

[–]MrHermeteeowish 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And why the hell does Reader need to be updated every 3 days? I don't exactly need up-to-the-second updates to read a goddamn .pdf.

[–]LNMagic 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Reader is designed to be a complete, all-in-one file managing program that can read an incredibly wide variety of files. This list includes 3D CAD drawings. It is able to market its expensive software to businesses partly because of its excellent market penetration. For the typical user, it has far too many features (which, by the way are a large source of its many security holes). Smaller, lightweight programs like Foxit and Sumatra are lighter on resources and can still open password-protected PDF files.

[–]LeoPanthera 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

OS X has a built-in PDF reader ("Preview") that is far superior for 99% of users. And Windows 8 will have one too. Hopefully Adobe Reader will begin to die.

[–]TheRealJohnMatrix 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem is that less than 1% of people need or want a complete, all-in-one file managing program that can red a wide variety of files. They just want to open PDFs...

[–]LNMagic 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, I agree. Even with all the software I have, I see little point in Adobe Reader and nearly always recommend Foxit.

[–]preske 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have to use both, sadly.

Foxit can't use the signed certifications I need to print certain documents.

[–]LNMagic 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Did you try enabling Javascript?

[–]preske 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. But it's not a Javascript problem. They are government issued certificates, which will work only with Adobe Reader.

[–]LNMagic 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That sucks. I had to login to see my school's ebooks, and didn't have problems with it once JS was enabled.

[–]jacobcrogers 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it has more to do with security flaws in the programming. I use foxit reader when on windows but my absolute favorite reader is the one that comes with Ubuntu but they don't make a windows version of it.

[–]sweetafton 0 points1 point ago

[–]brain_candy 0 points1 point ago

Funny, but what is the difference between Win+D and Win+M??? Show Desktop vs Minimize All? I never understood why there are two commands that do essentially the same thing. Perhaps you can enlighten me?

[–]MrRykler 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you can press Win+D again and it will bring the windows you have up again. press Win+M again and nothing happens

[–]brain_candy 1 point2 points ago

Ah, i see! So Win+M is useless. Good to know I was ignoring for good reason. Thank you!

[–]Wannabe_Hipster 0 points1 point ago

[–]mc_curtis10 1 point2 points ago

[–]ninepointsix 0 points1 point ago

If you've got windows 7 - Windows and arrow keys for aero snap.

also win+L to lock. Ideal for leaving a laptop in the same room as friends and avoiding frapes.

[–]DJKGinHD 0 points1 point ago

Windows and 1 thru 9 (maybe 0, not sure; WinXP at work) opens the corresponding program in the taskbar. ie- Win+1 opens the left-most one, Win+2 opens the second one, and so on.

Even if i almost never use the my computer shortcut on my desktop, it somehow feels incomplete if i dont have it there.

[–]iLuVtiffany -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm kinda OCD with my stuff. I hate seeing things dirty. Even on my computer I like my desktop clean so it maximizes the room for the background picture (which is of my girlfriend). I also clear the contents of my recycle bin as soon as something is in it.

[–]Sco7689 1 point2 points ago

it maybe useless to us, but trust me, working in it-user-support I know people using this icon, starting acrobat reader, going file - open, browsing for their pdf file, not finding the document, calling me that someone must have deleted it, remembering that it was a .doc file not a pdf, clicking on "all files" instead of "adobe pdf files", not understanding why they cannot open a doc with acrobat reader, starting word, going file - open,..(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

I've worked in Tech support for many years.

Some people do use the icon.. the only beneficial thing about it that I have seen is the fact that it stores "recent document" data so that they can open them easily without having to browse to the location (often a network drive).

As far as frequent updates: this is definitely for security reasons. There are many many features in adobe reader that most people don't know about, such as a mail server. It's unnecessary, especially at my department, since everyone here only uses it to read PDFs.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

[–]WhitePostIt 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Only if you keep it on the desktop...which is why I use a dock and then use Camouflage to hide any folders I have on my desktop.

Eventually though the folder thing was still an ugly problem. So what I did was create a desktop background, and then custom folder icons that fit with the background. My favorite is an ocean scene, and so I have folder icons that are seagulls, sea turtle, sail boat, pelican, coral, fish and so on. So even when I don't use Camouflage to hide my folders, most people aren't even aware that what they're looking at isn't a plain wallpaper. I call em' Desktop Arenas.

The only problem though is changing the folder icon. You have to select each folder and change it manually. I couldn't find a program that would simplify this, and I couldn't find a programmer to help me develop one :/

[–]WhitePostIt 0 points1 point ago

[–]kendranot 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

how silly is that? i guess what makes candybar a thing at all is that it can change those icons that resist manual changing (finder, recycle bin, settings, etc.) well, sorry that i'm no help. haha

I think you're missing the point. It's not that no one uses Adobe Acrobat it's that no one launches Adobe Acrobat and then chooses File > Open and browses to their file. You just double click the PDF you want to open.

Google Chrome has a PDF reader built-in nowadays, so I just associate all of my PDF files with that and call it good.

Unless you're working in print production or with specialized documents (e.g. interactive forms, digitally-signed stuff, etc.) there's honestly no reason to bother with Adobe's app.

If it's the former, you're in the minority.
