That man taught me, as a very young child, to appreciate the value and joy of detecting tachyon particles. . . oh um and also reading.

[–]u8eR 15 points16 points ago

I'm an ignorant motherfucker. Who is that?

[–]floomp 24 points25 points ago

LeVar Burton of Reading Rainbow fame (and Star Trek TNG).

[–]BadFengShui 6 points7 points ago

And Roots, as I just learned today.

[–]Estragon_Rosencrantz 4 points5 points ago

TIL that some people didn't LeVar Burton was in roots.

[–]downvote_hunt 0 points1 point ago

who is this?

[–]geezlers 7 points8 points ago

Salman Khan. He created a non-profit educational website called Khan Academy.

[–]historianLA 107 points108 points ago

I know this might be anathema here but can't we agree that Fred Rogers demonstrates that not all theists are dangerous to reason and science?

[–]MrCronkite 86 points87 points ago

What Fred Rogers represents has nothing to do with religion. Fred Rogers represents that some humans are decent beings. The virtues he embodied are the ones we should all aspire to. He believed in every kind of equality, gay or straight, christian or atheist, male or female, black or white. He actually took a lot of flack for defending gays, but he did it anyways. I don't really care what you believe in as long as you don't try and get it taught in public school and are a tolerant decent human being. Also, here is a relevant xkcd about Fred Rogers fighting with his wife.

[–]napoleonsolo 46 points47 points ago

What Fred Rogers represents has nothing to do with religion.

What Mr. Rogers represented was secularism, which as Richard Dawkins eloquently put it, includes religious people.

Nobody has to point out that Sarah Palin is Christian. Nobody wonders "Oh, what's Michele Bachmann's religion?" Mr. Rogers didn't bring up his religion. He was a role model for all children, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, atheist, etc. He wasn't known for his ministry, he was known for his secular TV show.

[–]MrCronkite 22 points23 points ago

He was known for being the nicest guy ever! Everyone who has ever known him of screen loved him. There are thousands of anecdotes about things he would do. Once, he was going to a buisnes dinner in a chauffeured car. When the driver told him he would be waiting outside, he invited the driver in for dinner! Afterwards, he went to the drivers house, and sang songs with his family. Like everyone else he met, he regularly wrote letters to the driver for years afterwards.

[–]wwj 4 points5 points ago

It has a lot to do with privacy as well. People don't even know what personal privacy is; it used to mean something long ago.

We can't even help ourselves from blurting out all of our personal beliefs and feelings. The internet sure hasn't helped either.

[–]craiggers 10 points11 points ago

Mr. Rogers viewed his show as a religious calling and was ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church. So what he represents has to do with religion, at least for him. Although he was relaxed enough that he'd have no problem with the fact that he might represent something else to certain others..

He also saw that as meaning he should show unconditional love, and as a consequence his funeral was protested by the Westboro Baptist Church.

Here is a fascinating (and tear-jerking) window into Mr. Rogers' personal life, from a journalist who got to follow him around.

[–]AgentCC 4 points5 points ago

I forgot how much I loved Mr. Rogers until that article reminded me. Indeed, it was tear-jerking and as of now, I think I need a minute to recover.

Thank you for posting...neighbor.

[–]MrCronkite 6 points7 points ago

What I mean when I say he dosen't represent religion isn't that he wasn't religious, its that for him religion wasn't about following the instructions in an old book, it was about being a nice person. If it would get everyone to be as nice as he was, I would embrace religion in a heartbeat!

[–]FeistyCrawfish 1 point2 points ago

Agreed, he was very religious, but he actually lived the core message, which was unconditional love as stated by craiggers. The fact that he didn't try to drown others in his personal beliefs is why those fucking excuses of human beings that Westboro is protested his funeral. For him, his religion was personal, but the love was public, and that is why he is a shining example of what a religious person should act like.

[–]MrCronkite 1 point2 points ago

I would welcome WBC to my funeral, because it would prove that I did something great if they hate me!

[–]FeistyCrawfish 0 points1 point ago

Indeed. Love our troops, love Fred Rogers, fuck Westboro. Someone ought to make a bumper sticker of that <---

[–]ravenouscraving -1 points0 points ago

Was it really necessary to dedicate a whole paragraph to Mr. Rogers taking his clothes off?

Funny, though.

[–]ravenouscraving 0 points1 point ago

I should go out and buy a biography on Fred. Maybe if I read a bit more about him, I can learn some of that amazing temperance that I so sorely lack.

[–]agladwin -2 points-1 points ago

Are there any recordings of this still in existence?

[–]Feinberg -1 points0 points ago

I don't think anybody claimed that all theists were bad.

No love for Don Herbert?

[–]linearcore 3 points4 points ago

Mr. Fucking. Wizard.

[–]shakabusatsu 0 points1 point ago

Apparently Reddit is too young to have watched Mr. Wizard. I always felt Beakman and Nye try much too hard to make science "cool". Ugh. Science was cool way before green slime took over Children's programming.

[–]candystripedlegs 1 point2 points ago

if you're old enough to have watched 'cosmos' you are old enough to have seen mr. wizard. i remember watching both shows as a kid.

[–]awesomechemist 21 points22 points ago

Wasn't Bob Ross a christian?

[–]GodBeJustPretend 24 points25 points ago

Yes. So was Fred Rogers (he was actually a Presbyterian minister). They were both still awesome. And besides, they aren't Christian anymore. Sorry, maybe that was in bad taste. I'll leave now.

[–]jubydoo 0 points1 point ago

I thought Fred Rogers was a Methodist minister? Meh, same diff.

[–]GodBeJustPretend 4 points5 points ago

Not according to Wikipedia, for whatever that's worth.

[–]FeistyCrawfish 1 point2 points ago

In very bad taste, especially for two people who basically MADE your and my childhood.

[–]GodBeJustPretend 0 points1 point ago

Give me a break.

[–]Owitb 8 points9 points ago*

That, and Bob Ross is the only one up there who's not a scientist. Levar Burton would've been more applicable.

Edit: Missed the nicest man in history Fred Rogers for some reason. There's two there who aren't scientists.

[–]RastaFarva 26 points27 points ago

The reason Bob Ross is up there is because he taught us the beauty of Nature, and how art can be therapeutic

[–]djpk19 -2 points-1 points ago

I'm sorry, Bob Ross taught us to make happy pictures with our imaginations. I was never fond of that type of art. I prefer the art that is based upon seeing and studying what you are actually looking at. Pretty pictures that are made up will sell better. Most of the time people prefer fake to reality. But it just pisses me off that this most unscientific guy, who just made happy trees was put on this list.

[–]Lightfoot 2 points3 points ago

He taught how to paint... the act of painting. We learned to paint. And he did so calmly and enthusiastically, this wasn't a debate about "what art is", it was that he wanted people to learn the techniques he used to make art.

[–]djpk19 -2 points-1 points ago

It's like learning math by pushing paper cut outs of numbers around until you make something that looks like math, versus learning actual math. I think it is disingenuous.

[–]Sindarin 0 points1 point ago

Yes, and therefore he is EVILLLLL.

[–]Wanted_Goat_Rapist -5 points-4 points ago

I heard he was a mormon

[–]the_scot 0 points1 point ago

Nope.

[–]Wanted_Goat_Rapist 0 points1 point ago

Haven't been on reddit in forever, but I looked it up and Bob Ross was a mormon. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Was_Bob_Ross_a_Christian Feel free to look it up for yourself if you're not convinced.

[–]half-dead 12 points13 points ago

I feel racist because I know who all of them are except the black man.

[–]exick[S] 45 points46 points ago

Don't feel racist, but do find out who Neil deGrasse Tyson is. He's an incredible educator among other virtues.

[–]TraderHoes 1 point2 points ago

He is also super hot. Want more women at Skeptic conventions? Make sure NdGT is there.

All's I'm sayin'.

[–]darthjoey91 2 points3 points ago

Use this photo for the ads.

[–]jubydoo 16 points17 points ago

I envy you, because you are about to find out just how awesome Neil deGrasse Tyson is.

[–]EbolaPie 9 points10 points ago

Sometimes I wish I could forget about him so I could find out about him all over again.

[–]OmegaVesko 8 points9 points ago

Neil deGrasse Tyson.

He did an AMA a while ago, too.

[–]jubydoo 11 points12 points ago

[–]MoroccoBotix 3 points4 points ago

Then you need to see this.

[–]TraderHoes 1 point2 points ago

That was lovely

[–]smallestmanonearth 1 point2 points ago

I feel sexist because I can't think of any women that would fit in with these gents, except maybe the girl from the Edison Twins.

[–]pumpalumpagain 5 points6 points ago

What about Julia Child? She was a great teacher.

[–]Bandakar 2 points3 points ago

May I submit Kari Byron?

[–]disturbing_halfwit 2 points3 points ago*

She's not the main character in the show though :/ It's a little different because the men in the picture are all kind of like the main teacher for a class of millions of people. Kari is kind of surrounded by other men, and she's kind of a side character :P

But anyways.. http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lrn819d6zx1r3rgo1o1_500.gif

[–]jschulter 0 points1 point ago

If only there was one that wasn't animated...

[–]disturbing_halfwit 0 points1 point ago

Yeah... why is that? :[

I think there is a reason why a majority throughout history have not been female - until recently tv shows would have hired men over women to host, just because that's the way it was for a while. If you were a woman, you had to blind people with your talent or a man would be hired over you regardless of if he was less talented. The truth at the time was that people in general were more willing to trust a man to teach them than a woman. And while that is a better reason than many would give it credit for being, I still feel ashamed that I can't think of a more modern example :/.

[–]smallestmanonearth 0 points1 point ago

My thoughts exactly, i felt ashamed to even post my admission.

[–]smallestmanonearth 0 points1 point ago

Good example! If only she was a real person.

[–]disturbing_halfwit 0 points1 point ago

Le tear.

[–]EbolaPie 0 points1 point ago

Yes, yes you may.

[–]smallestmanonearth 0 points1 point ago

She is not really an inspiring personality to me, I find her a bit annoying. That is only my opinion though, it is nice to see a female in a role like that.

[–]aleisha3 4 points5 points ago

My 16 year old sister can't name one. :'(

[–]neverwhere9 9 points10 points ago

You will explain each and every one to her.

[–]darthjoey91 2 points3 points ago

With Youtube. For once, it can work as a repository of culture.

[–]GodBeJustPretend 1 point2 points ago

Fred was the bomb; one of my favorite people in the whole wide world when I was kid. What a loss for us to not have him around anymore.

[–]Gamejunk 2 points3 points ago

fastest repost ever unless the title changed. just saw it earlier today under "you see master wayne..."

[–]Havokk 3 points4 points ago

WHERE THE FUCK IS MR WIZARD?

[–]ElectricSick 6 points7 points ago

Where's Stephen Hawking?

[–]redoswald 14 points15 points ago

writing another book repeating things he's already said in other books with minute differences and bigger pictures.

[–]SilentExchange 2 points3 points ago

All of these men have/will have/had shows dedicated to teaching on television. I don't believe Hawking ever did.

[–]goofygoobarock 3 points4 points ago

"Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking" was a 3-part series. Kind of.

[–]Khephran 0 points1 point ago

A really one awesome one at that

[–]MegaFireDonkey 2 points3 points ago

Stephen Hawking is a brilliant, remarkable individual. However, I don't think he fits in with these men exactly. I always feel like Hawking is trying to show off and usually maintains an air of elitism. I realize his unique situation makes it more difficult, but you just can't match the unbridled compassion, empathy, and infectious passion for their subjects that these men had.

[–]Godphree 7 points8 points ago

Some women do too.

[–]jschulter 2 points3 points ago

It's an allusion to a quote which had the word "men" in it, not sexism. Kind of sad that I can't think of any women in the category (awesome children's educational show hosts) though.

[–]yellowbells -4 points-3 points ago

welcome to reddit, where women exist solely to be demeaned and dismissed.

[–]j4ck4ll 3 points4 points ago

Richard Feynman isn't included. This is unacceptable.

[–]lastsanegirl 3 points4 points ago

My first world problem is that I will never get to have a beer with Dick Feynman.

[–]tinyroom 2 points3 points ago

Seeing Bob Ross there, I think this video is a bit relevant:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRmbwczTC6E

[–]Nap-89 2 points3 points ago

I'm having a hard time seeing the morphers on their wrists....

[–]MouseFitzgerald 1 point2 points ago

Sir David Attenborough would be number one on my list.

[–]riversofgore 1 point2 points ago

You forgot Levar Burton!!!!!!!!!!!! Reading Rainbow!!!

[–]UltraMegaMegaMan 2 points3 points ago

i just want to point out that we are familiar with most, if not all of these men due to the grace of publicly funded television.

The kind without commercials, that isn't funded by corporations with an agenda, and has their funding slashed over and over again by republicans.

We should do more to save it.

[–]wackylol 0 points1 point ago

Well congratulations. This is like the 50th time some variation of this has been posted and every time is gets even more embarrassing to look at.

[–]mrhthepie 3 points4 points ago

Why is Alan Partridge- ohhh Carl Sagan.

Every single time.

[–]PoniesRBitchin 6 points7 points ago

Don't worry, every time I see a Sam Harris quote over his picture, I think "why is Zoolander telling me about atheism?"

Apparently I'm not the only one, because this showed up when I Googled it.

[–]SecretMeatloaf 1 point2 points ago

"Once you truly examine why you don't believe in any other gods, clearly, you'll know why Hansel is so hot right now."

[–]godlessatheist 2 points3 points ago

Mr Rogers is religious and I'm guessing that Bob Ross is as well.

[–]Feinberg 1 point2 points ago

Yeah. They did teach people, though.

[–]GodBeJustPretend -3 points-2 points ago

Neither of them are anymore. They're both dead. But yes, they both were. Fred was actually a minister (see my comment above).

[–]RonaldFuckingPaul 1 point2 points ago

Neither of them are anymore

you don't know that

[–]jschulter -2 points-1 points ago

They are dead, their bodies are either ashes or decomposing in the ground somewhere. Their memories live on.

[–]GodBeJustPretend -2 points-1 points ago

That's true. I don't know lots of things. For example, I don't know I'm actually real. Perhaps I'm just a dream inside the sleeping mind of a butterfly. And perhaps Fred and Bob are sitting beside a giant fairy on the top of a cream cheese frosting-covered carrot cake. Or perhaps they are lounging around in a cloud-filled retirement home being governed like slaves by an omnipotent but incompetent, contradictory, jealous, spiteful, genocidal, tyrant? I really have no idea.

[–]godlessatheist 0 points1 point ago

I knew that Mr. Rogers was dead but did not know that Bob Ross was dead. Just used present tense without realizing it.

[–]Isayimanatheist 0 points1 point ago

But I just want to open the door in your heart

[–]mguentz 0 points1 point ago

Nicely done.

[–]abhorson 1 point2 points ago

Dawkins?

[–]Sassyquatch 0 points1 point ago

The interesting thing is that this is a painting by Bob Ross, that was in a book featured on the Reading Rainbow

[–]Scotty1992 0 points1 point ago

[–]coolfoolroolz 1 point2 points ago

You forgot Adam Savage & Jamie Hyneman. But other than those few ommisions, I am quite happy with this.

[–]captainfranklen 0 points1 point ago

I can't possibly upvote this enough.

[–]Alexwearshats 0 points1 point ago

No Stephen Hawking? I'd say he's a pretty big influence on my interest in science.

Where is Mr. Dressup?

[–]Supora 0 points1 point ago

Maybe we could make more posts about female scientists and Atheists. I absolutely agree that these men are fantastic scientists and educators, and I love me some Carl Sagan. But we should definitely work harder to include intelligent female atheists and scientists.

I'm going to start doing some research about female scientists and non-believers so I can further educate people on how women have influenced the atheist/scientific community.

EDIT: Wording.

[–]mishaneah 0 points1 point ago

Gotta get LaVar Burton in that dream team.

[–]OneKindofFolks 0 points1 point ago

LeVar Burton?

[–]Brettersson 1 point2 points ago

[–]ThatGuyKarth 0 points1 point ago

Even though that guy in the middle (Mister Rodgers :S?) was a christian, he was the fucking nicest son of a bitch to ever live.

[–]metnavman 0 points1 point ago

Potentially original content?! Upvoting until someone cries repost!

[–]exick[S] 3 points4 points ago

I can't take credit for it, so original might be too strong a word. It was posted by a friend on Facebook and it looks like the watermark from the Tumblr that it came from is still intact. That person may or may not be the originator.

[–]metnavman -2 points-1 points ago

Haha, no worries. It's the first time I've ever seen it, and I likes it, so carry on good sir!

[–]tapeworm53 -2 points-1 points ago

my mom dated bill nye. he's a douche.

[–]Iansane138 0 points1 point ago

Really? How so?

[–]bleu_gascon -4 points-3 points ago

Why is Bob Ross there? He's doesn't teach anyone about painting, if anything he promotes bad habits and teaches people how not to see, which will only compromise them if they later want to learn to paint/draw.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

That made my day, even if you did forget LeVar.
