My life here is terrible. Work environment is not great and benefits are little. But don't worry, everyday only about 10 people are seriously injured and I'm very careful. We opened a small shop, business isn't bad. Although I don't understand very much English, but I can still understand what white men say. Hopefully we can become successful, I will work hard and take care of myself.

Are you guys well? Miss you very much, hope to see you again.

It is also chronologically and historically correct to write the letter in Chinese Traditional format, because Simplified format didn't come out until past 1956 (according to Wikipedia)

On the other hand, it is a little against the culture to tell your families from far away that your living condition is terrible. Because of gold rush and "American dream", most people will tell their families not to worry and that they are doing very well. It is those white lies that encourage more to pursue this so called American dream..

FYI you can put HTML in an RES tag - just be careful to leave some non-linked text so you can edit the tag later

for example:

<a href="source link">youtube mastermind</a>. not really, guy's a retard

or the lazy:

some tag text <a href="link here">(link)</a>

obviously it doesn't help now, but useful for future tags - you can attach context to a tag to remind yourself later :)

[–]borkedhelix 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, when you're filling out the tag, there's a handy dandy "Link" box. Puts a website link on the little profile window that pops up.

[–]hoody8 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Although it's written in traditional Chinese, it is clear from both the level of language and the handwriting that it is not written by a native (my guess would be either a foreigner or an ABC learning written Chinese). Also note that the letter is written in bai hua (modern chinese writing), which was not commonly used in the 19th century for letter correspondence - most letters then would be written in Classical Chinese.

i do not agree, the level of chinese is perhaps not high but it is definitely not low. and if an ABC can really write like this (cos it reads quite smoothly), then he/she must've learnt it well. my guess is that a taiwanese has written it.

[–]colorific 1 point2 points ago

You would only have to have read until the 4th character to know it was traditional...

[–]justonecomment 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That assumes I can read all characters. I haven't read Chinese in over 10 years and then all I could read were a few basic characters like 我, 你, 多少钱?. It looked simple enough that I could make out most of the characters and since I never learned traditional I assumed it was simplified and I was wrong.

Assuming... damn...

Scumbag Chinese Kid

Takes Chinese for free credit, ruins curve.

[–]AkodoRyu 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Call me ignorant, but what is a curve you are mentioning? I'm guessing it's some kind of grading based on bell curve?

If so, why would something like this be used in education? It defeats the whole idea of exam and actual, fair grading. If 70% of class got 90-95%+ points, 70% of class deserves A, or whatever would the top mark be.

[–]Zelcron 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's a few ways it can play out. The most common one I've seen is that the highest grade in the class is weighted to 100%, so if one person scores a 97 in a hard subject, and the rest of the class scores around 75 (or even the next best person), that one person has had a major impact on their grade.

Alternately, some courses might only give A's to the highest X number of students, B's the next Y, etc. This is sometimes used as a predatory practice at some institutions who offer merit based financial aid. They'll admit freshman with the promise that as long as they keep their GPA above a certain level, their tuition will be paid. At the same time they'll admit so many freshman under those terms that it becomes mathematically impossible that all but a handful won't end up owing tens of thousands of dollars to the institution.

[–]UmYes 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've seen curves done both of those ways, but also I've seen it where the class average is below a C, so they'll raise everyone in the class's grades by a few points so the average is a C.

[–]IsABot 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Curves are bullshit. Either you get the question right, or you get it wrong.

[–]jamstight 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I disagree. Yes, you either get the question right or wrong but I think giving someone a grade relative to how the rest of the class did makes more sense than holding them to a standard nobody else could reach. I mostly think this because that's how the real world works though. Everything is relative, perfection is all based on perceptions.

[–]jacekplacek 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

BS. That means if someone is in a class of morons (s)he will get all As with very little work. But someone who masters the topic much better would fail in the class of geniuses.

[–]IsABot 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except in some fields, the difference between right and wrong could ruin lives.

Yeah if you are in Art History, big whoop if you get something wrong. If you are an engineer, say civil engineering, you could kill someone by miscalculating.

[–]Jhultgre 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ironicly as an art student none of my classes were curved yet most of my engineer friends classes were

[–]MoarVespenegas 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's because if the engineering classes weren't curved the class average would be 30%.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In my experience, curves were used in classes where the whole point of the class was to teach you to deal with difficult problems you'll face in your field, as opposed to memorization.

An organic chemistry class, for example, might be graded on a curve if the majority of the test consisted of asking students to design a process to synthesize molecules, instead of just asking them "Is this an alcohol?".

The latter is a more important skill, but in the real world, you're not going to be trying to answer that many questions in that short a time period. They can either give you easy, useless questions, or hard, helpful questions you don't have enough time to answer. So they give you questions you're expected to mess up a bit, and grade it on a curve. And a 45% on the exam becomes a passing grade.

Of course, this is ONE situation where a teacher might use curves, and the system can be abused. But it's not inherently bad.

[–]Chrysalis_ 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The point of a curve is to normalize scores based on the difficulty of a test. There's nothing special about 90%, 80%, etc, as these are just arbitrary cutoffs. On high-level physics exams, it's pretty standard for the highest score to be below 50%, so it wouldn't make sense not to apply a curve.

[–]GKworldtour 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is why US exchange students love Australia, no grading curve!

[–]kekle 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't ever go to law school in the U.S. For three years the entire worth of your existence is based on a curve.

[–]BoysenberryJamFan 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The issue is you don't always know how difficult the class or exam will be, and it would be unfair to grade everyone based on an untested scheme. If the highest grade in the class is 80%, you're not going to give everyone C's and D's, since you probably just gave a very difficult test.

[–]bradleyjx 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Probably the best explanation I've heard from a professor (when I was in college) was that it allowed him to not need to build the test worrying about it being too hard, and he could then always just make the tests very high on the conceptual understanding and application of topics, not just the "did you memorize the topic" questions.

Another way to think of it: A lot of tests have questions which are designed for a large percentage of the class to be able to answer. (fill-in-the-blank, multiple-choice) Grading on a curve lets a test be much heavier on those applied questions that are generally only towards the end of tests.

[–]SolidSquid 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

afaik it only partially influences the grade, and is intended to compensate for variance in test difficulty. I've never actually seen it being used though, most schools use marking schemes now which clarify which each point is for and don't allow for that kind of flexible marking

[–]temp9876 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

don't listen to these guys, the curve can be brilliant. Most of my University career was spent on the curve, EXCEPT for failing. You couldn't be pushed down to a fail by the curve if your absolute grade was a pass.

But imagine this: your prof gives the mother of all impossible exams and you tank it. But so does everyone else. Should your GPA hit the shitter because the prof made an impossibly difficult exam?

So the way the curve method works is that we assume that the performance of the class will be normally distributed and that the average grade should be a B. Then we use that as a benchmark to adjust performance measurement.

It seems like a raw deal, and it feels like it if you ever get pushed down. But when an entire class has unusually high or low grades, odds are that it isn't the students, it's the teacher. Why should those students be punished (or rewarded) because the didn't get a strong prof or an easy exam?

That's my ramble on the subject, you can see me during office hours if you'd like to dispute your grade.

[–]Bertongod 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Only if its the day you post finals grades. I will also show up the day before finals and ask for extra credit opportunities. See you in two months!

[–]stationhollow 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's the thing. The average grade shouldn't be a B. It should be a C. From my experience US universities have inflated grades.

[–]jgoonld 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It depends on the type of exam. The best class I've ever taken was a small organic chemistry II course in college where the professor specifically made the test such that the average was around 50% and focused on application to situations that we hadn't previously encountered before. The range of scores was also huge and allowed for determination of who really understood the material, who memorized the material, and who didn't work at all in the class. If the class hadn't been curved, I would have gotten like a C- (I got an A- curved), but it was still the course that's taught me the most. Similar goes for many of my exams in other courses (physical biochemistry was a killer that would have had a class full of D's without a curve).

Can't tell you how many styluses I lost because they would just fall out of the device. I had 3 units have a screen problem - first 2 were replaced but I received refurbs instead of new units, after the third they basically said fuck it, you're on your own.

After that it wasn't until 2010 that I finally got a Smartphone for work. I spent about 9 years or so in a state of totally shit organization.

Buried, but whatever: I did this once but in Spanish. I was testing to see whether my teacher (who never returned assignments) ever even read the things we turned in. He never mentioned it so case closed I guess.

[–]obscureted 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm probably completely wrong about this simplified chinese people are talking about in this thread, but yes. I seem to remember chinese writing in columns from top right to bottom left (you start reading at top right, downwards and then continue to the next column on your left). Wish someone could tell me how it is.

[–]dwightmoody 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Traditionally Chinese was written top to bottom then right to left.

In modern times often written left to write, then top to bottom.

We had to do a report on the Hobbit from the perspective of Bilbo. Kind of like a journal that he would have written. I wrote it in the dwarvish alphabet, but it was mostly bullshit and gibberish. Got an A.

When I was in high school we had to write a short story about an alien who arrived on Earth after we had all gone and write from the aliens point of view or something. Mine was late but I made up my own alphabet and wrote my whole story in that, with a translation key. Instead of getting marks off for being late, I got an A, probably because the teacher didn't want to bother translating it.
