As a Coke employee, I think credit should be given where credit is due, these are all Coke products. 7UP is Dr. Pepper. Just sayin'.

But.. what happens if they wanted a 7up? Also- terrible story =[ when I was 17 I only had a few precious possesions and I always kept them on me, with my bag (which was also a precious posession.. ) And two 18 year olds stole my bag right from the school office (You would think the school would have better security in their Office..) Stole everything out of it, ripped a lot of my papers, Spit on the bag, then threw it in the trash can and poured soda and trash all over it. The school security shrugged me off when I told them what happened (At the time I was searching did not know what they did to it, or where the bag was.)

After spending my whole off period searching and asking people questions I pretty much gave up. But my teacher helped me find it, and AFTER we found it and got the names of the people who took it, THEN the security guards memory was "jogged" and remembered seeing that exact person who they happened to know, with the Unique bag. =_= Needless to say I pressed charges against the two, especially since they apparently already sold some of my stuff..

[–]Quipster99 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow. No man, school security is a joke. I used to lock my bike up with a chain & padlock inside the school to a staircase just across from the office. Someone cut the chain and stole my bike during the day, with students & faculty everywhere.

Then again, my school was a dump, so it's not surprising.

in 2nd grade, a bunch of kids when i was busy in class, stole my bag and emptied it out all over the girl's bathroom. i still dont know why they did that.

When I was 9 or 10 years old (Can't remember the exact age) I had left my Gameboy with Pokemon Blue in it in my locker through the lunch break and when I went to check it at the end of the day somebody had stolen my Gameboy and game (which I had spent over 200 hours on) and replaced it with a piece of paper calling me a geek. I still to this day don't know who stole it and never got my Gameboy or game back. Humanity/Society sucks.

[–]akhead 1 point2 points ago

Some friends of mine use that exact can to hide their stash from the cops when they're driving around smoking the herb.

I was in the backseat one time when we got pulled, we all had to get out the car while they searched it.

The whole car stunk of chronic and we where obviously very hazed. The cop picked up the can, shook it, assumed it was full and put it back down.

No charge, was a good day to be high.

[–]morgueanna 124 points125 points ago

These displays are getting pretty common. Makes me think this is actually a corporate decision and not the act of some cool assistant manager and the stockboys.

[–]Tashre 102 points103 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was only a corporate decision insofar as allowing Coke to pay for and use the empty wall space in the store.

Credit should go to the Coke vendors. Vendors are completely separate from the stores they service.

[–]MalignantMouse 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And, more specifically, to the Coke interns/associates who are paid to drive from store to store setting up these sorts of displays.

[–]Podunk14 39 points40 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not the interns, it is the regular coke employees who create and build these displays. In addition, this display is relatively safe because it is braced directly against a wall which can be seen at the top of the photo.

Coke gives awards to their employees who service the stores based on those who get the stores approval to put up these displays and for how nice they are.

[–]VitaminB531 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Former Pepsi merchandiser here. Although this display is large, it is surprisingly stable. Notice how some of the 12 packs are stacked width wise, this helps lock together the structure as a whole. We would also use narrow paper sacks (normally used for bottles of wine) placed randomly throughout the display to help add stability as well.

[–]afsdjkll 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used to be a merchandiser for Pepsi too (91-95 I think). We didn't have these cool square ended 12 packs to work with back in the day though.

[–]Hammerhead3229 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Former Pepsi merch here too. I just started to see them recently, a lot of our sales people would come in and set up the displays usually for sporting events. Like a big colts or IU symbol

[–]DemureLoudmouth 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow, its a former merchandiser party. I used to be a merchandiser for Coke. Built tons of displays much like this (although ours were usually things like football stadiums and such).

[–]IrishJon 1 point2 points ago

Former sales rep for national brand and former manager here. These displays were almost always done by the reps. Sometimes we would incorporate flat screen televisions, cars, pool tables, etc and build displays around them.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Former Coca Cola merchandiser here. For our displays we did the horizontal cases for strength, but I would always also use the repackaging material they gave us for broken or open twelve packs (the flavors that were least popular [Minute Maid, Vault, Squirt--when in a non hispanic area.]) to keep the structure from falling. Mostly on the front columns where customers would take the product.

It worked well in the backroom too; it made for a lot less bitching by the receivers and managers of the store because 1) it wouldn't fall, break, leave a mess, and money lost for them 2) You could build sky-high, and have enough room for when the new shipment came.

The stores really have none of their workers touch the soda product. They negotiate on which company (Pepsi, Coca Cola, 7up...etc) gets the endcaps or front displays for different occasions, and then the merchandiser for that store has to build them. Sometimes they'll get help from another merchandiser for really big displays.

Yeah, you probably already know all this stuff, but yeah that display probably took FOREVER.

[–]Ishmael12 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was wondering how you would deal with the fact that friction between 12 can boxes of soda is basically non-existant. Although it is on a flat surface so that is probably marginalized.

[–]darkestdayz 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a FritoLay merch, don't understand why Lays products are built into a Coke display...considering we're Pepsico.

[–]Sloppy1sts 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So do the individual employees have to come up with designs on their own or do they just have to convince the managers to okay them?

[–]VitaminB531 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Templates were given to the merchandiser, at least this is how it worked in my area. I believe displays were determined at a corporate level (where they would be placed as well as design).

[–]entent 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Was about to say this. I work in a grocery store as stock, and the only soda we touch is store brand. Coke/Pepsi has 2 displays that change weekly for each brand and on the other side of the store they each have their own section.

Only cool thing our vendors do is give us coupons haha. One time I got like 30 32oz powerades for a few bucks. 10 buy 2 get 1 free coupons and they were on sale buy 10 get 5 free already + employee discount ftw.

[–]Niserox 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a guy who used to be a stockboy, I can't stress this enough.

I tried making Sonic one time with soda cases and after my supervisor saw it, he laughed for about 3 seconds, said "wow that's cool!" then told me to take it all down and rearrange it so that all the cans of the same type are together.

Cool for karma, bad for buisness.

Grocery clerk here. This is grocery porn. I can confirm that there are company prizes awarded to the Grocery department with the best displays for certain holidays or events. This often means everyone in our department wins $20 gift cards to use at the store or dinner for everyone. When these events happen (like the superbowl) there is a newsletter sent to every store with pictures of the best displays. At my store in particular Pepsi often has reps come in and design these.

Does this have any legal implications?

Or is this not considered a commercial use of Nintendo property?

Poor, poor bastards who had to do this one. I'd probably walk out if I were asked to build this.

That being said, this is really cool.

Definitely doing it right when it comes to structure, pallet stacking where they can and staggering depth where they can't. I had to stack that shit for 6 years and something that big weighs a TON unless they used empties, and I doubt that.

[–]ChipWhip 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sadly, the soda vendors do that, which means there's a cool Coke guy, not a cool grocery store manager. I mean, the store manager might be cool, too, I don't know. But this isn't necessarily indicative of that.

Grocery stores rarely build their own pop/soda displays. Coke has vendors that come in to build and maintain displays, and stock shelves. So, this is actually a Coke vendor being awesome.
