For West Virginia, I believe that the book "Rocket Boys" was actually released under the title "October Sky".

[–]apmihal 203 points204 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fun fact: October Sky is an anagram of Rocket Boys.

That blew my mind. AND I came here to say October Sky is SUCH an awesome movie.

[–]burgess_meredith_jr 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It absolutely was. You should have seen my geek radar go up when I saw that one. Papers on my desk were flying, tabs closed, tabs opened, browsers engaged, facts checked, rechecked. Will surely be the most productive thing I accomplish this week. :/

Some ambitious and highly technical movie buff Redditor should redo this map after taking nominations and voting on what movies should represent what states and such.

[–]iAmJimmyHoffa 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Rocket Boys was the working title for October Sky, but the director decided to rename it because he said (paraphrasing of course) "Honestly, who would want to see a movie called 'Rocket Boys'?"

Pretty cool, but it isn't a 50 state map. Good Will Hunting covers all of New England except for Maine. Delaware isn't on there, neither are Hawaii and Alaska.

Fight Club was set in Delaware!! Tyler Durden's address is in Wilmington.

As a fellow Delawarean I am disappoint.

[–]mtskeptic 47 points48 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Plus they don't say it explicitly but the ending involves the credit card companies that are headquartered in Wilmington.

Former Delawarean here - The scene where they're smashing car windows they mention a fight club in Delaware City and Pennsville (In Jersey but across the river from New Castle, Delaware.)

Also, Empire Records apparently took place in Delaware and Dead Poets Society was filmed in Delaware, but the story takes place elsewhere.

One more thing - If I remember correctly the last match in "The Wrestler" is in Wilmngton.

[–]rlanantelope 16 points17 points ago

You have no international airports, no national parks, you have the lowest average altitude of any state, you have the fewest counties of any state having counties, and now, Delaware, you did not make the movie map.

[–]avenx 15 points16 points ago

We have the lowest average altitude?

Wow I never knew that...TIL, I guess.

[–]slothbear 8 points9 points ago

Yeah jumping on the hate Delaware wagon for a bit.... The toll that Delaware charges for its section of I-95, well I will let the facts speak for themselves: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delaware_Turnpike

From the article: It is the most expensive toll road in the United States based on a cost-per-mile average.

Miles: 23 Toll: $4.00

God dammit Delaware

EDIT: It's actually 11.2 miles. Conclusions:

a) I am an idiot

b) GOD DAMMIT Delaware

That was the first thing I noticed. Love boston. But Vermont and New Hampshire are separate states.

[–]Tmyakal 15 points16 points ago

Well they're using Ghostbusters for New York, and while few movies sum up New York City so beautifully, the film doesn't even begin to describe the rest of the state. It's a matter of picking and choosing.

They wanted to base the movie in Wilmington, Delaware, which is where the book takes place. But, apparently, that would require all sorts of rights clearances, to the point that they weren't even able to show the Delaware state flag because it would require a new set of rights clearances. That's also the reason why the skyscrapers at the end are ficticious and based on different ones from California and Chicago and not the actual ones on Wilmington.

Other fun fact: Delaware has a very low corporate income tax rate, and banks based in the state have few limits on the interest rates they can charge. That's why many credit card companies are based in Delaware and why Tyler is so obsessed about bringing them down.

I'm from New Hampshire, and I have it on excellent Internet authority that New Hampshire is just a town in the state of New England. I am confused as to why New England gets broken out into "Misery" and "Good Will Hunting"; it's obviously all one state.

Excellent movie suggestions, though. Even I would've struggled to come up with one set in NH.

[–]LouZephyr 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know why Misery is listed in New England at all since the movie (and the book) was supposed to have taken place in Colorado. Just because Stephen King is from New England that shouldn't mean the movie is a New England movie.

[–]sje46 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fuck that noise, Fargo is the Minnesota film. I've never seen Minnesota so perfectly captured and satirized, it's clear the Coen brothers are from here. Just because the title is Fargo, and the first five minutes of the movie take place there, does not make it a North Dakota film.

[–]u8eR 25 points26 points ago

This is true. Almost the entirety of the film was shot in Minnesota and it's predominately about Minnesotans. Fargo definitely should have been the film chosen for Minnesota. I think Jesus Camp should have been chosen for North Dakota instead.

A lot of movies took place in New York, but none as important as Ghostbusters.

Every time someone posts this map I feel a need to point out the definitive movie for Texas, based in Texas, is Dazed and Confused.

[–]frechet 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is that really definitive for the entire state of Texas? I would agree its definitive for Austin, TX.

I ran into Mark and Tom about a year ago. They're still identical to how they were portrayed in American Movie. They didn't have much time to talk given they were late for a UFO Sci-Fi movie convention.

When I can't go to sleep this is exactly how I spend my time lying in bed:

Washington State: War Games New Mexico: Milagro Beanfield War Texas: Giant Louisiana: Southern Comfort West Virginia: Matewan Maine: Stand By Me (Misery was supposed to be set in Colorado) Idaho: My Own Private Idaho New York: Woodstock Massachusetts: Jaws

Having grown up in Colorado I must say that Red Dawn is spot on as the quintessential Colorado movie.

Wisconsin got American movie? Yeah it was cool and all, but a little too independent. I doubt many outside of the arthouse scene have even heard of it. What about Mr. 3000 or even Bridesmaids or the best one to represent: BASEKETBALL!?!

[–]Life_In_A_Brick_Haus 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a fellow Wisconsinite, I agree with the Baseketball proposal... however, American Movie is fucking awesome.

Another movie worth consideration is Dawn of the Dead!

Delaware = Wayne's World?

It wasn't set there, but it made the most notable Delaware reference in cinema, which is close enough.

[–]The_Hindu_Hammer 8 points9 points ago

Actually Fight Club was set in Delaware. I can't believe it's not on the map! Tyler Durden's address is in Wilmington.

how're you going to slap the label onto Pennsylvania with Groundhog's Day? Of all movies! why not Rocky 1 thru 7? Yes I count Adrian's Revenge as a movie.

I'm pretty angry as a resident of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that we are not represented on this map; as in we are not even on the map at all. Yes I know we are part of Michigan but not all of Michigan can be represented by 8 Mile, and I mean that in a literal sense not metaphorically; 8 Mile is not a long enough title to stretch it across 2 peninsulas. So basically what I'm saying is give us a movie: either Escanaba In Da Moonlight or Anatomy of a Murder. That is all

[–]rydir891 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yoopers hate the movie Escanaba In Da Moonlight. Anatomy of a Murder is a much better choice.

[–]los_pollos_hermanos 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a resident of the U.P. here I must say that is an excellent movie. My grandfather was actually the real life attorney of the murdered man who the movie was based around.

[–]rentedtritium 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

At the very least, they could have put the 8 up there, but yeah, as a floridian, when I think of the U.P., I think of Escanaba In Da Moonlight.
