This. The way the game plays is very dependent on team size, and how well people communicate. While scrimming 10 mans or playing actual matches it's fine, it's an expensive weapon and the other team can communicate your position. But if you're in a 24+ server, you do have a leg up on other people since the AWP excels in chaotic games, especially if it's a server that hands out money to the players, which ruins weapon balance (as the weapons in CS have always been balanced by their purchase price, generally).

As a long time CS player you get used to it, but I never really liked the AWP/sniper mechanics in CS (heresy, I know), just in the way you handled it (the auto-loading weapon switch trick, the jumping and stopping with the scope accuracy), never really was my thing at least in pubs (competative games are a whole different discussion). When I snipped I generally used the scout because it was cheaper, you ran fast with it, and it's fun headshotting AWP users who just spent 6.8k on their loadout.

Leg shots do 84 damage and shots through walls do like 46-55 damage unless its in the head if I recall correctly.

I believe that in the 0.66 beta (first version I seem to recall playing), you didn't even need to stand still. Running at full speed + zoom with full accuracy = endless fun.

It's only because the Scout exists. If they just ditched the Scout you wouldn't hear anything about the AWP. Hell you can't even quickscope like you could in 1.6 and people still complain about the fucking thing.

Pub CS? AWP entire team of newbies as they run through double doors.

Competitive CS? Miss your shot while defending de_dust 2 A, signaling to the enemy that there is an AWP at A, which prompts the enemy team to fake long A as they mercilessly murder you from catwalks.

In Competitive CS, it's more of a support tool (locking down areas), but you sometimes see clutch 1v5 plays from good AWPers.

Two things of note: Online matches? Awps - no skill, no problem thanks to hit compensation.

Awp is awp online or offline. It takes skill regardlss of hitboxes, compensation or not.

No, it really doesn't. Online, sniper rounds get compensated to the body very often, especially on limb shots on a moving target. offline, the shot goes where your crosshairs were - the compensation is <1ms vs 100-500ms of comp online.

Take a look here - this shows you how big a difference hitboxes make. Red is what I saw and was shooting at - blue is where the server realized the person was, and compensated my actual hit. The displacement is massive on online servers.

pretty much. Apparently the bullet doesn't even touch you. The shockwave alone shreds your appendage off. It depends on how central the impact is. There are three divisions of the femoral artery, if you hit all three then you're probably a goner no matter what aid can get to you. Anything short of being on the table and having clamps ready would probably be insufficient to save your life. Below the knee though and you could probably stop the bleeding with a bandanna and a belt. Loss of about 2-3 pints of blood.

Counter-strike isn't counterstrike when you take out the awp. Like chess needs the Queen, cs needs an awp. It enables for instance the need for precision over long range with the other weapons. You have to be quick and smart to outplay an awp and many people that mix and play higher skilled are that quick or that smart. Just like in chess when you do get a pawn on the other side, you are not going to change it into a tower. You change it to a Queen. So, when you save money and saving money might cost you a round or two, you buy an awp.

Granted, for a public server, disallowing the awp creates a more balanced playing field for players of different skill levels. Publics are not about team play, even though that does occur from time to time (highly enjoayable, I must say), publics are supposed to be fun for everyone. This means also for the people who aren't able to outplay an awper. It just makes the game more relaxed, less competitive. Which is only fair because most public players are blocking team-attacking team-flashing idiots who stand in your way half of the time anyway. Trying to be good is futile, nobody calls, you get anally raped all the time, nobody can hold a position. And when you wait until most of the idiots are dead and gone, you are going to be called a camper. Well fuck you, I was unable to move from here because of laughing my ass off how you are a complete failure.

This is why I like to play publics where there is the awp available. Separates the men from the boys.
