None of us are exempt, least of all me. My brother still hasn't forgiven me for barfing all over myself in the car when I was about 3, and I don't blame him in the slightest.

Oh, man. I got to play with a skull very similar to this recently. The teeth wiggle and stuff, and I spent most of my time wiggling teeth and restraining myself from wiggling them all out. They just wiggle so well!

[–]Phasechange[S] 57 points58 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You what?

Please explain the context in which you were playing with a child's skull. I'm sure it's more benign than it sounds.

[–]ForgettableUsername 56 points57 points ago

You can actually buy human skulls online for around a thousand dollars each, although something like this would be a rather unusual find and probably a bit more expensive.

Perhaps more significantly, you can sell human skulls online for around a thousand dollars each.

[–]Phasechange[S] 66 points67 points ago

I found a human head in a remote hole in an island off the coast of Kenya once... I kept walking, then on the way back I looked for it but it was gone, and then I noticed there were some guys lurking nearby staring at me... I left fairly rapidly.

TLDR: TIL I missed out on $1000 darnit.

[–]SoAwkward_ 1 point2 points ago

They're not that expensive. They are only like $200.

[–]SoAwkward_ 1 point2 points ago

Meh, not really. You can buy skulls that have shot gun holes, I have seen one with a guy that got beat to death with a hammer. I know that a full skeleton of maybe a 5 year old or so is pretty pricey.

I went to the house of a classmate once, his brother was studying to become a doctor. There was a skull on top of the TV. I've seen plenty of cadavers, mummies and different body parts in my life, but this caught me completely off guard. It seemed so weird, eating food with the skull right there. I don't even want to know how he got it.

I don't see why we can't grow replacement teeth buds from our stem cells in an artificially created teratoma.

These occur naturally anyway, and sometime contain useful items like teeth, hair or eyes!

[–]Jonkey 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Growing teeth from buds isn't the problem, it's the growth/eruption signaling that's the issue.

[–]Jonkey 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Using stem cells to grow new teeth - that's exactly what we're doing. The next hurdle is being able to "plant" the buds and have them properly grow in the alveolus.

The signaling mechanisms for tooth eruption in natural dentition isn't completely known/agreed upon so signaling implanted tooth buds (although the same as the naturally occurring buds) is tricky.

There have been several theories (some of which have been disproven and disregarded), but at this point, the two most popular theories are 1) teeth are pushed out of the bone as the root forms and gets longer and 2) the periodontal ligament (PDL) and the attached cells (fibroblasts) contract and pull the tooth out.

Most likely, the physical elements of root formation and PDL contraction are both responsible (or at least intertwined) for causing the tooth to be displaced into the oral cavity. And both are controlled through their own specific cellular signals. The signaling (controlled by hormones and the like) is very difficult to pinpoint and accurately mimic. This is what our research is focused on at this point.

It'd be good to have backup teeth always available.

Even if they were only available as a set. Press a pressure point on your face, and your entirely new dental set springs into place, shooting old teeth across the room in a spray of enamel chips.

[–]timmmmah 30 points31 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Every time this gets posted people talks about how much it creeps them out. Help me out here... I genuinely have zero reaction to it at all. It's mildly interesting I guess but definitely not disturbing. Does anyone else go "meh" like I do? Why do so many people experience such strong revulsion to it? Am I dead inside? Is it because the internet has erased my creep-o-meter? Is it because my dad was a dentist?

[–]geoemyda_spengleri 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's similar to that fear/aversion of clusters of holes, at least for me. Something about seeing those teeth inside their own little holes just gives me the heebiejeebies.

[–]jigglewatts 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For me it's less of a fear and more of a "I HAVE to destroy it" feeling, like when I imagine holes in my flesh I want to scrape it off SOOO BADD. Would this be considered trypophobic?

[–]geoemyda_spengleri -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the phobic aspect implies you are too scared to act against the fear, so instead of having an urge to destroy it, you just want to get away from it or something.

I don't even really consider trypophobia a thing - it's not a recognized phobia, and wikipedia won't even have a page on it because they've deemed it a hoax. But I think for the average person, seeing little hole clusters on something biological (e.g. a skull, a frog's back, someone's arm, but not your shower drain) is naturally going to give you some sort of visceral reaction because, as you said:

when I imagine holes in my flesh I want to scrape it off SOOO BADD.

That's probably a better way to put it than saying it's a phobia. If I were to develop little pockets all over my arm or something, I'd sure as hell want to get those things off of me instantly.

[–]erotic_octopus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have that reaction even when it's not biological :/ Bunches of holes or clusters of stuff on anything skeeve me out. I think I'm just weird.

My 3yo bit the dust hard and shoved his central incisor up behind his nose and tore his mouth in half (clean hole).

But he learned to stop running in the house!

Anyway, I was really shocked to see how well-formed and big the teeth are up there. You don't really think about it or look at those kinds of dental x-rays when you take your kids to the dentist. It's not what they're looking for. With these, they were trying to find the tooth in the chance that it was shoved up in his head. Which it was.

The other thing is that when we got his tooth out, it was about 3x as long as any baby tooth you or I ever lose. The dental surgeon told us they disintegrate, but if you pull out a baby tooth, they're quite long. Just like in that picture. Oh, and it's hollow. That you don't see.

[–]sundressmomma 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thank you for that explanation. :) That's exactly why I came to the comments. I was wondering why they were so long cuz I remember baby teeth being tiny when they fall out. Also, I'm glad your son its ok, but I have to ask: did you pass out when it happened? I know I would.

In the dream I already knew I was going to see something wrong, but I kept walking towards her. As I round the booth to see her face... (dude. I'm actually having a hard time typing this.) Hah, I just took an osteology exam earlier today on dentition...was fiddling around with a skull exactly like this! Yeah it's creepy...alveolar production/resorption and what not O_o

I am really confused. I never knew teeth grew like that and I will explain why and maybe one of you can explain the reality of it to me. When I was younger, my teeth would get loose, and when they finally fell out they were detached from the root. It looked like they had broken from the root. I always assumed the root grew the new tooth. Now it looks like the adult teeth are growing from places I had no idea that they can grow, and do they attach themselves to the root of the old baby tooth as it looks like none of the adult teeth have roots themselves and I never remember any roots coming out with my baby teeth.

Simple short explanation: As the adult teeth grow, cells that break-down bone attack the roots of the baby teeth. They eat up so much of the baby tooth's root that by the time it is loose, all that's left is what you put under your pillow.

[–]Chiparoo 0 points1 point ago

Ah! The fact that the adult teeth are already there is how doctors can tell if you have all of your adult teeth at birth. When I was born, the doctors said that I was missing five of my adult teeth. Sure enough-- I am missing one in the front (which has a fake tooth embedded in it's spot!) and my four wisdom teeth. They just never grew in.

[–]filipha 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So they x-rayed you right after you were born? Any reasons for the x-ray?

[–]niceclicks 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks for the share! I know its creepy, but I have always wanted to see an x-ray of a baby's head just to all the little adult teeth hiding in the bones.

Who goes around taking and dissecting the skulls of children? That's just incredibly rude.

I don't think growing adult teeth is a rare disease, sorry bro

[–]shakamulaka 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It looks so bizarre though. I always thought the tooth just started growing and coming out once the the baby tooth fell off. I had no idea there was a FULL grown tooth just fucking waiting to pounce.

[–]EldaJenkins 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was always under the assumption that the growing adult teeth more or less forced the baby teeth out.

[–]Versatyle07 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

More or less correct. The growing adult tooth bud will cause the roots of the primary teeth to resorb which is why they become loose and eventually fall out.

[–]caitiecat -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Um... remember losing your baby teeth? And having adult teeth grow in their place? Yea. This is that.
