Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

holy shit.

[–]cheshiregrins 10 points11 points ago

This pretty much sums up every initial reaction to this photo....

[–]heart-on 2 points3 points ago

these are the same people that have one of their dead leaders on display

[–]Nwolfe 1 point2 points ago

Gotta love the Russians.

[–]heart-on 1 point2 points ago

i was going to make a vodka comment, but then i remembered that poland actually came up with vodka.

[–]nvflip 0 points1 point ago

My sentiments exactly.

[–]RumorsOFsurF -1 points0 points ago

I was going to say the exact same thing.

[–]geosensation 1 point2 points ago

I was going to say holy fuck. Same sentiment though

[–]freefalliguana 47 points48 points ago

That's really unsettling. What would be the point of having an open casket in this case?

[–]Izawwlgood 24 points25 points ago

To compel people to do better. It's an honor; closed caskets in this case would be shameful. He, and everyone who followed deserved having everyone, EVERYONE, know what was at stake.

[–]WarPhalange 77 points78 points ago

Ignoring his fate seems awfully cruel. This way people are at least forced to look at what they've done.

[–]Izawwlgood 1 point2 points ago

Not 'what they've done', but what they failed to do. Him being there was his choice. Engineers failing to bring him home alive was their failure.

Wow.

"So there's a cosmonaut up in space, circling the globe, convinced he will never make it back to Earth; he's on the phone with Alexsei Kosygin -- then a high official of the Soviet Union -- who is crying because he, too, thinks the cosmonaut will die. The space vehicle is shoddily constructed, running dangerously low on fuel; its parachutes -- though no one knows this -- won't work, and the cosmonaut... is about to, literally, crash full speed into Earth, his body turning molten on impact. As he heads to his doom, US listening posts in Turkey hear him crying with rage, cursing the people who had put him inside a botched spaceship."

[–]Shlief 25 points26 points ago

Its really haunting reading about this, and probably taps into claustrophobia, can you imagine being trapped in a small hot box knowing you're going to die and there is nothing you can do. i did a bit more digging and found this arcticle. the sound clip....

[–]b__lame 5 points6 points ago

Translation, anyone speak Russian?

[–]Flyboy_Will 16 points17 points ago

There's something seriously wrong with the analysis of the message.

The clear first part says "greetings to the nations of our motherland that are paving mankind's way to communism. Cosmonaut Komarov."

That calm part is most likely Komarov's voice. It's part of a recorded message he sent from space to be played back on the radio.

Random parts of the clear message are later played back again, which likely means it wasn't spoken live but rather recorded and played back.

The second part is completely unintelligible. The only word I can clearly hear is "povtorite", "say again". It is spoken with a heavy Ukrainian accent. Komarov, born and raised in Moscow, would not speak like that. Besides, we had just heard his voice earlier.

What this is is a clear and calm message from Komarov, and a garbled message from the ground perhaps asking him to repeat it.

This article here: http://www.svengrahn.pp.se/histind/Soyuz1Land/Soyanaly.htm Probably makes it more clear that this is not Komarov's last desperate cries.

[–]actuallytrue 1 point2 points ago

thanks!

[–]MiamiFootball 5 points6 points ago

it's really hard to hear anything that the cosmonaut is saying -- the radio guy is generally speak in 'grand' terms; I could really roughly make out that perhaps the radio man is talking about something about the cosmonaut's actions are for the future of the Russian people and futures generations and that type of talk. Presumably, the radio guy is talking directly to the cosmonaut but even that is hard to determine.

[–]Repard 15 points16 points ago

I feel insensitive saying this, but this is what I imagine when I play Kerbal Space Program. While I wait for my horrible ship design to slowly fling itself into deep space, I imagine some Kerbal President giving a speech in which he commits "our brave souls into the bosom of the unknown. May we remember and learn from their sacrifice, in the hopes we will lay as few Kerbal souls upon the altar of scientific revolution as possible."

[–]rivermandan 4 points5 points ago

TIL about the existence of kerbal space program. this angers Armok, as I will likely take a break from dwarf fortress while playing spaceships

[–]samfreez 0 points1 point ago

Your fortress will continue prosperously without you. Until the WereZebras come for them.

[–]angrylawyer 0 points1 point ago

I thought that paragraph was going to go another direction:

I feel insensitive saying this, but this is what I imagine when I picture Russian engineering.

[–]CITIZENCELL 1 point2 points ago

My favorite Pink Floyd song

[–]314R8 0 points1 point ago

Is this the guy who insisted on going instead of Yuri Gagarin?

[–]joguwa86 1 point2 points ago

Someone should make a movie about this guy. A movie good enough that it can get away with having the main character die.

[–]Seamus_OReilly 30 points31 points ago

Didn't he take the mission instead of Yuri Gagarin, pretty much knowing he was going to die?

[–]SharkAids 22 points23 points ago

He did. Couldn't let his friend and world hero die for stupidity.

[–]erratic_thought 11 points12 points ago

This is interesting because when I was a boy my father told me the story but it was the "other" communist written story. My father told me that the brave cosmonaut kept sending info to the ground control on the problems with the parachute. He never mentioned anything about him cursing. Few years after the collapse of the regime in my country he told me that the story was a lie and told me the real story, that the cosmonaut cursed them to his last moment. I wondered how he knew this w/o Internet and last time I saw this here I asked him and he said he red this in a book written by a Russian dissident ...

[–]TomViolence 7 points8 points ago

I think we should all see this. When people talk big about the ultimate sacrifice, this should be what they mean. Not a sacrifice for your nation, or even your species, but for your friend.

[–]x86_64Ubuntu 16 points17 points ago

Their faces look so Russian. I don't know how to explain it.

[–]WarPhalange 18 points19 points ago

Slavic facial features are pretty distinct from western Europeans, Asians, Arabs, Persians, Africans, etc. It's no different than looking at someone and realizing they are Filipino.

[–]x86_64Ubuntu 10 points11 points ago

I think thats what it is. There is some difference in the roundness of the lower jaw and the forehead formation of eastern europeans and those of western europeans. Western europeans have rectangular, stony, hard facial features. Eastern Europeans have softer, friendlier facial features. They compensate by their language, and boy do they compensate.

[–]WaywardSpaniard 1 point2 points ago

I've always thought so too. Vladimir Putin, Fedor Emelianenko (mma fighter), and Gene Palubicki (metal musician), to name a few, all seem to have what I see as a typical Slavic face (you could argue that because I know of their origin I automatically am biased to group them together like this though). Anecdotally, I remember walking through the subway and seeing these two guys where I just though "damn, those guys are totally Eastern European" to later here them talking amongst themselves in what was clearly a type of Slavic language. And this sort of thing has happened often. Also, and this is just me, but Daniel Craig seems very Slavic looking (this was my opinion before seeing the movie "Defiance").

[–]verrtex -2 points-1 points ago

You have no idea bout typical Slavic faces. Putin is far from Slavic. Russians, in general, are not really Slavic, they are Fino-Urgic + mix with Siberian people. Polish, Serbian, Slovak, Ukrainian are Slavic. Russians are not.

[–]WaywardSpaniard -1 points0 points ago

Okiedokie. They just all seemed to have those darkish, 'sunken' eyes and particular mouth features. But like I said, that's just my impression and I'm guessing you know more about this than I do.

[–]verrtex -1 points0 points ago

Darkish? Usually Slavic people have blue eyes... Well, maybe "they" do have the darkish, sunken eyes. The only question is who are "they"? Slavic people? Russians? Easter European (Hungarian and Romanians are Easter European but not Slavic)?

[–]WaywardSpaniard 1 point2 points ago

No, I didn't mean the color of their irises, I meant the eye sockets or the area around their eyes. But yeah, I kind of just consider Russians and Eastern Europeans as Slavic in general without really knowing the technical and real distinctions between them (i.e. I didn't know Romanians and Hungarians were not Slavic).

[–]verrtex -1 points0 points ago

Romanians are from the same group as Italians, French, Spanish and Portuguese. Hungarians are from the same groups as Estonians and Finish (at least in term of language, genetically they are mixed with people from other groups).

[–]verrtex -1 points0 points ago

Russian are not really slavic! They mixed very much with Finno-Ugric and Siberian people.

[–]rivermandan 2 points3 points ago

hint: they may be russian ^

[–]x86_64Ubuntu 2 points3 points ago

I know, I know, but if you had shown me the photo with no context I would have guessed somewhere from Eastern Europe.

[–]rivermandan -1 points0 points ago

I was just making joke; russian would have been the first guess if I saw a picture of them ^

[–]Nwolfe 1 point2 points ago

From left to right it looks like bemused, sad, and indifferent. Seems pretty Russian to me.

[–]rrwrwx -1 points0 points ago

nose

[–]IfInDoubtSayYes 5 points6 points ago

Wow. All my respect for these people who tried to make mankind better through scientific discoveries.

[–]BrightHighdea 4 points5 points ago

The Fury

[–]styroteqe 2 points3 points ago

Open casket?? Why?

[–]imredditting 2 points3 points ago

I think it's ultimately more real. You get to see here what he endured for someone else. If I remember correctly this man took this mission knowing he'd die, but if he didn't take it his friend was going to. This is respecting his sacrifice, although it's definitely gruesome to see.

[–]314R8 0 points1 point ago

I think that friend was going to be Yuri Gagarin, who was already a hero.

[–]Retanaru 1 point2 points ago

They put him in a spaceship that was destined to fail horribly, they get to see what they did.

[–]nosippinh8rade 10 points11 points ago

AUNT BERU?! UNCLE OWEN?!?!

[–]yearisaday 5 points6 points ago

This is an interesting piece on the lost cosmonauts in the Fortean Times: http://www.forteantimes.com/features/articles/1302/lost_in_space.html

[–]cbh3dy 1 point2 points ago

http://www.npr.org/blogs/krulwich/2011/05/02/134597833/cosmonaut-crashed-into-earth-crying-in-rage

Is a relevant story about the reasons for the crash and is an outstanding read.

[–]MoonJive 1 point2 points ago

Wasn't there a whole stink disputing the veracity of this?

edit: yup.

[–]cbh3dy 0 points1 point ago

Huh! TIL

[–]boomer56 5 points6 points ago*

That is awful. I can't believe the Soviets released that photo. Or even kept it in the archives. Do you know where it came from?

[–]joannchilada 0 points1 point ago

Why shouldn't they? Shame on them for putting him in a doomed space craft.

[–]boomer56 0 points1 point ago

Well, because they were a repressive authoritarian state that tried to suppress anything that didn't make them look good. The Soviet Union was not a nice place.

[–]joannchilada 1 point2 points ago

I now see what you're saying. Initially, I thought you were disgusted they kept a record.

[–]boomer56 0 points1 point ago

:) It's cool. Disgusted by the events, but just surprised they kept the record.

[–]HankSpank -3 points-2 points ago

Did he die?

[–]stevetec 0 points1 point ago

According to the book by Colin Burgess, Soyuz 1 hit the ground at around 120 miles an hour. Small braking rocket engines ...designed to fire moments before touchdown, exploded on impact. The ...wreckage erupted into flames, ...so fierce that the aluminium outer sheet melted and pooled on the ground. ...recovery crews could do little but extract what they could find of Komarov's charred remains. They did not know the parachutes would get tangled and he would only have been aware of the fatal problem in the very last couple of moments.

[–]acegibson -4 points-3 points ago

Now that's metal.

[–]cubistpanther -1 points0 points ago

Even Rico of Fisher & Sons couldn't sort that out.

[–]uncletheo -1 points0 points ago

That's gross you guys.

[–]haloskulls117 -1 points0 points ago

(note: i dont want to sound like a COD black ops fanboy) but, in the black ops mission that includes the rocket ships was that soyuz 1 over in the distance?
