Flying glass...

I, for one, have always been scared of sharp projectiles.

Survival of the fittest is probably out to get anyone who isn't afraid of sharp projectiles. Seems like a healthy fear to me.

If it makes you feel any better, this glass is tempered. Tempered glass shatters into a million not-sharp-at-all pieces.

[–]LtCthulhu 26 points27 points ago

Ahh so thats why my scuba goggles say "tempered." Could you imagine?

[–]malon34 678 points679 points ago

How does something like that even happen?

[–]TheSecretMe 278 points279 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a safety measure. In case of fire the revolving door elements clip together so people can rush through.

It's not supposed to do so spontaniously or while people are inside though.

[–]BloodyIron 165 points166 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sounds like an unsafety measure to me, as outlined in the OP.

[–]TheSecretMe 107 points108 points ago

Malfunctioning safety measures usually are.

[–]AppleDane 8 points9 points ago

Bullshit. He should come here and tell us himself. Don't let him forget to take a picture as proof.

[–]radcopter2 46 points47 points ago

When this first posted many years ago, people speculated that it was because of an extreme differential in air pressure between the lobby and the street.

[–]malon34 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Can that happen in a normal day to day situation?

[–]radcopter2 36 points37 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think so. If you look at the street outside, you can see snow on the ground. Its likely that there was either some strong winds or the temperature difference between the two sides of the door caused some rapid movement of air (technically I guess that's the same thing). If you look closely at what actually happens (check the bottom of the turnstile space), the panes at the 9 o'clock and the 3 o'clock position are both being pushed in towards the lobby. So this definitely isn't just some guy that pushed the other side too hard. Something else happened.

[–]jayseesee85 31 points32 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or there's the "Magic Turnstyle" explanation that refutes the "Second Pusher" hypothesis.

[–]Xandari11 38 points39 points ago

so, we're all just calling these turnstiles now? revolving doors are what they are called. turnstiles: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turnstile

[–]MrNoMoniker 692 points693 points ago

You can see a guy come in from the street, pushing the door the wrong way. No ghost, just an inattentive asshole.

[–]shitterplug 1525 points1526 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, he was pushing it by hand and someone (tard outside) hit the wheelchair button, which automatically lays the doors flat, and aligns them perpendicular to the side walk. Usually there is motion sensor that stops it from happening when the thing is in use, but I guess that was not the case with this one.

I used to install these things in Seattle.

[–]Bucky_Goldstein 349 points350 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

this is the first time I've ever heard this explained and it makes waaaaaaaaaaay more sense than anything else I've heard about two dumbfucks being able to push the door hard enough to break it

thanks for the explanation!

[–]Kenitzka 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just figured it was a strong wind since either side collapses inward, squishing the man front and back. Glad to get the correct answer. Surprised this didn't kill (or maim) the man.

[–]FuriousBanana 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Glass is designed to break into tiny pieces that shouldn't hurt you (except for some smaller cuts). Had that been older non-treated glass, a huge sharp shard could have fallen on him and chopped him in half.

[–]Kenitzka 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, heat treated glass does indeed shard into many many less dangerous pieces. BUT... it's also much harder. The tension required to overcome the internal stresses (that serve to break it into thousands of pieces) is much higher than standard glass.

It takes quite a bit of force with a baseball bat to overcome the tempered sidelights on a vehicle. I was just imagining the force to the head this glass imparted before the shattering took place.

[–]ultrasuperthrowaway 7 points8 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wait a second, in this better and longer video version, you can see glass rolling back from the door into the building at 25 seconds and then again at 38 seconds in this video, suggesting that the HIGH WIND is a factor.

At 1 minute the door is again blown by the wind, and it causes a heavy floormat corner to lift up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAtmZTRtUa4

Also notice the glass shaking before anyone even enters at the very beginning of the video!

The video was captured in the Dexia Towers of Brussels Belgium.

[–]thealfreds 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Very small pieces of glass blew a few feet...when you said that the high wind theory might be correct I assumed the glass was then all pushed. Nah if there was large enough wind to push the doors together than all that glass on the floor would be flying around the room.

[–]ultrasuperthrowaway 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've found that automatic wheelchair buttons can only slow them down, there is however an Emergency Collapsing Mechanism.

http://www.internationalrevolvingdoors.com/IrdDesigns.htm

[–]xandr96 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The doors have to be able to be pushed together in case of an emergency. Revolving doors don't make good escapes, so push the doors flat and more people can get through in a shorter amount of time.

[–]Corvus133 65 points66 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow, these things are designed to be a mess, then.

We have similar at our building but for people in a wheel chair, there's a second REAL door that doesn't revolve.

This design is just awkward.

[–]Xethos 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well how else would you get an object inside the building that won't fit between the two revolving doors? A release is necessary for all revolving doors- NYC Carpenter

[–]InflamedFlamingo 24 points25 points ago

Hold up, I understand people in wheel chairs have places to go and all, but does the wheelchair button need to violently slam the doors off to the side? Are they in that much of a hurry? I just can't imagine anyone thinking it a great idea to slam the doors together like the text book of an anxious school kid waiting for the friday bell. I imagine this would take place slowly. Seems like mechanical failure combined with wind might have caused this.

[–]Tokeli 3 points4 points ago

Well in theory there shouldn't be anything between the panes when they close, for exactly this reason. The idea others have here is that the differential pressure between the inside and the outside somehow triggered the collapse.

That, or he really pissed off the doorman earlier.

I bet they put a kind of glass in there where in case of emergency collapse (or a guy being retarded like in this instance) the glass that breaks doesn't break in a way that can cut through skin. Glass technology is pretty advanced these days.

[–][deleted] 109 points110 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i'm holding out for glass that shatters and turns into skittles

[–]shortyjacobs 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It breaks in a way that doesn't produce big knife-like shards of glass. The "pebbles" of glass are still VERY sharp on their edges, and can do lots of damage. I had a broken car window one time and believed, "ooh, it's SAFETY glass, I can just pick it up with my hands like sand!". After grabbing a few handfulls of the stuff, I realized I had dozens of small cuts, like paper cuts, all over my hands.

Hurt like shit.

[–]chkltcow 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had to throw out a backpack after a racing incident. I was flagging a corner, a car wrecked and ejected its rear window near me, which shattered on a fence right above where I had put my bag. The glass raining down went all in everything I owned Every time I stuck my hand in there over the next few days to pick something out, I'd find MORE glass in it. Eventually I just threw the whole backpack away and bought a new one.

TL;DR Yes, safety glass is still sharp, and in confined spaces it seems to procreate. http://i.imgur.com/5Exjr.jpg

[–]PhoenixKnight 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, they're not. They can be moved backwards to create a T shape in order to move long objects through the doors that wouldn't fit otherwise. I've had to do this bringing large boxes of foam core boards into my building.

They look fixed but are actually collapsable in the event one is forced the wrong way. It's not supposed to whip like in this post, it is supposed to fold into the next door and bump handles so the glass is less likely to shatter.

[–]trevdak2 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i saw this on fark a few years ago, where people said it was because the fire alarm went off and the door was supposed to fold in such a way that people could run through it without having to spin the thing around.

[–]randomb0y 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I disagree. Unless the guy pushing it the wrong way is The Incredible Hulk, he should not be able to cause such a disaster. Also it looks to me as this is an auto-rotating door that does not require pushing. My guess is that the door has a fire-safety feature that makes it collapse in case of a fire, so that people can quickly escape the building without waiting for the door to rotate. It should also be able to collapse on demand, like when the outdoor temperature is not too far from the desired temperature indoor and it doesn't serve much purpose. I've seen collapsed rotating doors before at various businesses.

[–]btlyger 44 points45 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, the guy never touches it. The side of the door passed him and you can clearly see that his foot is away from the door. Then the door does the weird thing.

Also, at the end you can see that the door that the guy "pushed" goes to the left still. He never touched it.

[–]profnutbutter 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I was wondering why MrNoMoniker was getting so many upvotes... the guy from the outside doesn't look like he touched it at all.

[–]stilldash 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you look closely the person on the outside isn't able to push the door.

It fails close er to (x) than (+). The broken pane isn't exposed to the outside much at all. He stands outside, then backs off when the door breaks.

[–]LarryTheSatelliteGuy 12 points13 points ago

I recall a detailed engineer style explanation that this had to do with wildly differential air pressure. Something about the fact that these doors are designed to fault in exactly that way. In case of a fire in a building with large capacity and revolving doors, the doors will fold to become an open doorway to allow people to evacuate at a higher rate.

The tempered glass on the doors is easily shattered if the doors are warped or strained, but I'm not sure whether this happens every time the fire escape mechanism is activated or not.

[–]assholelikethat 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fire alarm. The doors swing from an "X" shape with 4 individual compartments to an "I" shape with the two sides allowing access through the passage way for people to stampede through.

[–]oroku-saki 35 points36 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think it was the guy on the outside. You can see the doors at the 3 and 9 o'clock position simultaneously move back inwards. That doesn't fit with a person forcing the 12 o'clock door clockwise (foregoing any complex door connectors). Even in the event the doors are designed to collapse, it should have been the door with applied force (the 12 o'clock one) that detached from its normal placement.

[–]yarnage 43 points44 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is correct. What actually happened was the door got caught on a piece of the frame forcing it to stop.

This was actually covered in a news article a while back so I'm pretty shocked so many are blaming either the guy on the outside (who actually doesn't touch the door) or some air pressure BS.

Safety glass. I work with foreclosed homes and they constantly have broken sliding glass doors from teenagers breaking in to party. You can pick that stuff up with your bare hands and not worry about cutting yourself.

[–]Realworld 12 points13 points ago

There's 2 types of safety glass; laminated glass used in windshields and tempered glass used in car side windows. Glass doors are made with tempered glass.

[–]Didub 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What's the difference in how they shatter?

[–]a_unique_username 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Laminated doesn't really shatter and just cracks but remains intact. Tempered explodes into lots of tiny fragments.

As someone who broke a windshield with her head, I can confirm this.

the building revolving doors are supposed to close together and form a door way in case of a fire so that people don't have to go thru a turnstile when there is a fire raging, but rather can just run outside through 2 open doorways on each side. this buildings fire alarm malfunctioned and closed while a person was still inside the turnstile, usually it is not supposed to do that.

[–]mahtoobah 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is not a turnstile, it's a revolving door. This is a turnstile:

It was the wind. Watch the debris already on the floor as the glass panels are pushed inward by the outside pressure.

Sudden gust of wind, or pressure differential inside the building caused by some kind of freak simultaneous elevator ascension caused the panels to be sucked inward.

Thank you, I already have an irrational fear of revolving doors as it is. This just made it worse.

My girlfriend laughs uncontrollably every time I take the long way around a building until a regular door is available. I must show her this.

I have to go through a huge revolving door every day to get to work. And it's automated... How can I know that the safety mechanism that stops it when encounters an obstacle is 100% reliable?

That guy just made a lot of money from the revolving door company....

[–]jayecks 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember seeing this before and someone was saying that it was really windy, and the pressure differential managed to be enough and catch it in just the right way so that the doors gave and slammed together. My guess is that the guy outside pushed it the wrong way, it paused, and the wind on the perpendicular door was just too much.
