I bet you it smells good in there.

Books always smell good

[–]dano670 9 points10 points ago

I remember it smelling not as good as one would expect. Most of the employees live in the store among the books.

[–]saywhatisobvious 4 points5 points ago

Damn employees fucking up my life.

[–]mindependentreality 7 points8 points ago

Full-time employees generally do not live there. The "employees" you're thinking of are young travelers--mostly backpackers from anglophone countries--who are allowed to sleep in the store in exchange for a few hours of work per day, give or take.

If your in a library, its quite possible that the smell you're smelling is actually a type of fungus that grows in between the pages.

It's apparently possible to get high on the fumes of this fungus, but you'd pretty much have to sit there with a pile of books under your nose for about an hour.

The owner seems like a fun woman. She was on Craig Ferguson's show when he was in Paris.

Found it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZnlW3bNQkA

Somewhere at the 5min mark.

Would be a great place to visit.

Is it bad that I saw the title and went "CraigyFerg! CraigyFerg!"?

[–]KillAllTheThings 6 points7 points ago

Yes. You should have gone with "G.P. & The Fergs". But you get an upvote for remembering that week in Paris.

[–]Lyeta 0 points1 point ago

Craigyferg is how my boyfriend and I oh so casually refer to Craig Ferguson and anything he does. I bought the boyfriend a Wavy Rancheros puppet and a snake mug. Because we're dorks like that. We waited for the Paris episodes for so long and watched them marathon style.

That's pretty cool. I prefer Sid the Rabbit though, especially since he gets on the show more often. I hope he takes another road trip this summer.

Edit: Just watched the video and I HAVE TOTALLY HAD SEX IN THERE! HA!

Sylvia is a little bit of a fancy-pants socialite, but who can blame her? Odd to be thrust into such a strange kind of minor celebrity at such a relatively early age.

So has my brother, probably. He worked there for 6 months or so a couple of years ago. it's a nice place to stay if you're travelling round Europe on a budget. You can work there and live on the floor for free.

If you're visiting France and are in love with books, don't forget to go to Bécherel with a few hundred euros and a truck. It's also one of the most beautiful town I've seen in Brittany.

I guess the original owner passed away? He was a bit of a nut. 60 mins did a piece on him, maybe 2005 or so. In the video, he used a candle to give himself a hair cut.

[–]Vitalstatistix 4 points5 points ago

George Whitman was a great man. I used to talk to him outside of S&C. He'd be sitting there with a little black puppy and would just tell me about all the amazing stuff he had seen through the years; truly wonderful conversations.

[–]GalacticWhale 0 points1 point ago

Sad to hear this. My friends and I visited the shop when we went to Paris, and one way or another wound up being invited up to his apartment to meet him. He told us stories of riding trains across the U.S. during the Depression. It came up when we told him we were Stanford students (on study abroad); he apparently wound up hanging around there for a while sitting in on classes.

During the 1920s, it was a gathering place for writers such as Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce and Ford Madox Ford. It closed in 1941 during the German occupation of Paris and never re-opened.

The second is situated at 37 rue de la Bûcherie, in the 5th arrondissement. Opened in 1951 by George Whitman, it was originally named "Le Mistral" but renamed to "Shakespeare and Company" in 1964 in tribute to Sylvia Beach's bookstore. Today, it serves both as a regular bookstore and as a reading library, specializing in English-language literature. The shop was featured in the Richard Linklater film Before Sunset and in the Woody Allen film Midnight in Paris.

[–]takebacks 6 points7 points ago

Is that the same store that lets any writer stay in the apartment upstairs for free while they write their novel?

[–]mindependentreality 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"While they write their novel" is a bit misleading. George, the founder of this incarnation of the store, used to make anyone staying at the shop write his or her "life story" and submit it to him. For awhile there was a length limit on these stories I think--one page or three pages or something like that. I'm not sure whether George's daughter Sylvia, the current owner/manager, still requires this "life story" writing--which was a challenge for writers and non-writers alike, if for different reasons--nor can I say where all those life stories might have gone. It would make quite a collection!

[–]takebacks 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah! I have always been interested in the story of that place: a friend-of-a-friend spoke about it warmly at a party years ago, I think that they may have stayed there for a while. But. I was incredibly drunk and the important details were lost to me upon awakening the next morning.

[–]dem358 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope, I think she doesn't. I stayed there for a night a few years ago, I didn't have a place to stay and I knew it was an option there and I asked if I could, so they let me. However, I slept in the bookstore, not upstairs, was woken up by a cat and some tourists.

This is extremely misleading, the current Shakespeare and Company is not the same store from 1921 to 1941, but rather a store named in its honor. Still, the current Shakespeare and Company has had its share of prestigious visitors.

Yes, the recently deceased founder of this incarnation, George, was a kindly old man and good friends with plenty of important postwar literary figures, especially Americans. I once saw Lawrence Ferlinghetti visiting with George; apparently he would say hello whenever he visited Paris.

About 5 months back me and a friend looked at the shop to do with community architecture. It's a very interesting place and the staff are very friendly. They allow travelling writers, poets and others to sleep and eat there for a few hours of work a week. Although a lot of the staff were american and British there were others. Most however were quite attractive women which apparently is common, I am sure you can think of the reasons.

Upstairs are a few beds, benches for this. They also have a piano they encourage people to play, also a chess board.

The store is easy to find, its facing Notre Dame on the south side of the river. They are a bit cautious about photographs being taken mind, they don't want to disturb customers with photos being taken. However if you talk to the staff they will allow you as they did us for a good reason. I have a few photos although not of the quality of the OP's as we had to be quick not to disturb people.

I remember going there last time I was in Paris. One of the young ladies came downstairs and started chatting with us because we shared nationality (we were both Danish).

I loved the idea of Shakespeare and Company, but it was a bit of a disappointment when I got there. I had much better luck with a place called Tea and Tattered Pages, which was lovely.

And bizarrely there is an article about the place written Monday, I was worried they had shut.

The Canadian Bookshop a few streets away is even more packed with books, so much so that the shelves are on rails you need to push to the side to reach the second layer of shelves.

Yeah, but the Abbey doesn't have a connection to Hemingway. Who cares if they have better prices, (probably) more books and a really friendly owner? I just want to go to places where people who I want to be once may have gone to.

I totally support you on this. I figure it might have been due to the fact that my visit to paris corresponded to a pretty severe depressive episode, and I was all by my lonesome.

I'd spent all of my formative years reading Joyce, Pound and Ford Madox Ford, and this place was ground zero for all the cool things that happened in English lit in the 20's and 30's. I'd just finished a masters in lit and was dealing with unemployment and writer's block, and I went to paris mostly because places like this and the surrounding area had always been talked about like some sort of creative mecca (sounds kind of naive looking back on it).

Instead I got a lot of style-over-substance hipster north american girls flittering about. The cashier didn't even give my books one of those stamps, but an anxiety attack was kicking in so i just bolted for the door.

Upon review, this reply makes me sound like some sort of incredibly neurotic misogynist. But I stand by it. Oh, and fuck Paris; give me Brussels or Berlin any day.

[–]ajfa 0 points1 point ago

It was the atmosphere when I went it wasn't a welcoming place (felt like a tourist venue), and the selection. I have to be fair though it was a long time ago though, 6 odd years. I think they had even suspended allowing people to stay at the time, so maybe things were rocky, or the management has changed.

[–]mindependentreality 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's crowded, yes. Then again, Paris as a city is crowded in precisely the same way that S&Co. as a bookshop is crowded. Bienvenu!

[–]lurch65 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Upvoted because I felt your downvote was rather unwarranted.

Nothing wrong with a crowded bookshop (it's hard to imagine S&Co. not being crowded given the way I remember it being arranged). I think it may well have been the people there on the occasions I visited that were the problem rather than the place itself.

Hell maybe it's just me? I am just one point in this opinion poll. :)

[–]mindependentreality 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow, you've got a generous reading of my comment dear stranger. I meant that more as a gripe about Paris generally than as a defense of the shop in particular. I guess it could swing either way, though. As someone who goes to bookshops mostly for the books--or else perhaps for the quiet time--I too have been plenty annoyed by the ever-increasing crowds at S&Co. But as I say, if you live in the 5th or nearby, it's part of a bigger problem. Love Paris, but it seems a little like living in a museum sometimes. A very popular museum.

Alas, it used to get rather chilly in there during winter. I have some very intense memories of going there in hopes of getting warm...not always so effective. I visited this bookstore while walking the streets of Paris. I didn't realize just how historical it was. It was an amazing store though. They allowed students to take any book to a room with a desk and bed to stay as long as you wished to read. I chose "On Bullshit." I was in Paris for Christmas, only a few weeks after the owner, George Whitman, died. Here is the obit they had posted in the window - he, and the bookshop, loomed large in the Parisian artistic community.

What this doesn't show you is the second floor - it's full of seats and books that aren't for sale to read. It was basically the nexus for English-speaking hipsters in Paris, and hanging out and reading there was one of the highlights of my trip.

This store is amazing though I thought I would fall through the stairs going to the 2nd floor. Books crammed everywhere! My total sad dork moment though was realizing it was used as the "Watchers" place in the Highlander TV show. Shakes head. My Parisian friend had me buy the book "Sixty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong: What Makes the French So French?" so I could better understand him. They even stamped the book with this seal stamp they have. Overall pretty awesome experience!

Found what i thought was the coolest bookshop here in Malmö. It was not much more than a display window and an apartment filled with books and they were just crammed in everywhere and there were ladders in strategic places. I was in love. The guy who ran the bookstore had a very 90's looking website and was very friendly. Needless to say everyone got books for christmas.

You can stay there if you're in Paris and need a place to stay. All you have to do is write a short autobiography, read one book a day, and help open and close the store. I stayed for three nights about 4 years ago. It's like a little communist hotel.

I hade the honor to meet George Whitman few years back, was a crazy and wonderful guy.

In case you don't know, aspiring young writers are housed for free in the shop in exchange for some chores.

Right around the children's section back in that little nook, there are dozens of notes stuck to the wall. Some are secrets, while others are just declarations that someone had been there. It's really a wonderful, cozy place in an increasingly touristy area of Paris.

Been there many times. Nice little bookstore, but it's extremely pricey. There's others around the 5e arrondissement that are as cozy but not as pricey. I forget the name, but there's one run by a Canadian that offers free coffee and has a huge selection.

Haha, that pretty much describes the whole city. If Euro Disney was full of beggars and smelled like piss.

[–]myclykaon 0 points1 point ago

I have a feeling it may be relative. I live in a small city in the UK that has the highest level of street begging outside central London, I grew up in Newcastle and lived in Birmingham & Liverpool in the 90s - so I know what piss that is weeks old smells like. After that, in comparison, Paris is full of genteel folk and is fragrant as a rose.

Neat looking place, but functionality wise, I think if I had to find a book it would be a pain in the ass. Give me a Kindle with WiFi any day over this.
